Longtime TBS rising star Thom Hinkle has stepped down as head of original content for TBS, TNT and TruTV after less than a year in the top programming post. He will be replaced by Sam Linsky and Adrienne O’Riain who have been promoted to co-head Scripted Originals for the three linear networks. They will report to Brett Weitz, General Manager, TBS, TNT and truTV.
Linsky, SVP of Original Programming, who recently celebrated 25 years with the company, will expand his responsibilities, alongside O’Riain, who has been promoted to SVP. Together, they will oversee the networks’ scripted content. Like most basic cable networks, Turner’s linear brands have been scaling back on original scripted series and ramping up their reality slates. Additionally, Linsky will work in partnership with Weitz and other company leaders to develop and execute strategic planning and programming initiatives.

Like it or not, TV dramas often set the standard for how television eras are remembered. Be it awards attention or Top 10 lists, dramas are looked to as a guide post for where we are, where we’re headed and what’s worth revisiting from the past. Series like “The Americans” and “Mad Men” look back to break down where we are now, while iconic moments in time are captured in series “of the now” like “The Wire” and “The O.C.” Eras matter, in your life and in all our lives, and these 20 series, all premiering in the last 20 years, have defined the past two decades in every aspect imaginable.
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” (1997-2003)
Joss Whedon may have traded the supernatural for superheroes in recent years, but his first series remains his crowning achievement as King of the Nerds. “Buffy” was strong as a whole, with a well-rounded cast, top-notch writing, and a healthy dose of classic Whedon humor, but it’s in examining the series’ most famous episodes that the true genius shines through. Three “Buffy” episodes are widely regarded as some of the best in TV history: the eerily silent “Hush,” featuring only 14 minutes of dialogue and the scariest villains in the entire show; the genuinely catchy musical numbers of “Once More With Feeling,” which combined Buffy’s existential crisis with a musical-inducing demon; and “The Body,” a study in overwhelming grief as Buffy and her friends deal with the death of her mother. While “Buffy” may not be as critically acclaimed as other shows on this list, it redefined the supernatural genre, paving the way for countless other shows — none of which have lived up to to the original vampiric cult favorite. – Kate Halliwell
“Oz” (1997-2003)
Given how much attention is given to early HBO dramas “The Sopranos” and “The Wire,” it’s almost criminal just how overlooked “Oz” has become. Critics adore it, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find any “Game Of Thrones” or “Breaking Bad” fans who have seen a single episode. Ironically, “Oz” paved the way for nearly every Golden Age TV drama in its path. So much of what we’ve come to expect from TV drama — antiheroes, brutal violence, moral ambiguities, the fearless disposal of main characters — was born at the Oswald State Correctional Facility, where racial, sexual, and economic conflicts within the prison system gave way to some of the most complex characters TV has ever seen. Each episode, co-written by creator Tom Fontana, dynamically weaves a single theme through both the present storyline and flashbacks revealing inmates’ unspeakable crimes, all narrated by Harold Perrineau Jr.’s Augustus Hill with a lyrical slam pulse. “Orange Is The New Black” has used this format in recent years to create its own memorable world, but it could only dream of hitting as viscerally as “Oz.” At times brutally grounded and surreally poetic, the show uses its fictional environment as a microcosm for our society at large, showing how the divides and conflicts manifested in prison first start in the neighborhoods we live in. “Oz” has a burdensome power that you have to reckon with. – Zack Shark
“Queer as Folk” (UK) (1999-2000)
With this intimate look at gay life in Manchester, England, creator Russell T. Davies brought joy, wit and pathos to the stories of Stuart (Aiden Gillen), Vince (Craig Kelly) and Nathan (Charlie Hunnam) as they struggled to find love in the city’s vibrant club scene. Balancing “Doctor Who” references with surprisingly explicit love scenes (yeah, look at that cast list again — some of the show’s hottest sex features “Game of Thrones'” Littlefinger and baby Jax Teller from “Sons of Anarchy), the original “Queer as Folk” was groundbreaking for British television and even game-changing for the U.S., when Showtime created an American adaptation that ran from 2000-2005. While short-lived in comparison to the remake, the original version remains singular and iconic. – Liz Shannon Miller
“The West Wing” (1999-2006)
Here’s the pitch: A young, close knit group of Presidential staffers fight the good fight, with episodes centering around wonky debates over sexy topics like the census, foreign aid, and nuclear energy. Hard to believe, but it was a formula that that led Aaron Sorkin’s NBC drama to capture an audience of over 20 million weekly viewers and four consecutive Emmys for Outstanding Drama Series. Mixing the hard realities of modern politics and Sorkin’s romantic belief that a dedicated group of passionate people can bring about positive change, the show was equal parts entertaining and educational. Predictably, the show teetered after its fourth season, when Sorkin and his playful dialogue moved on, but under the leadership of showrunner John Wells the “West Wing” successfully reinvented itself with longer, more sober story arcs centered around characters’ existential/career crises and an oddly prescient election to replace President Jed Bartlet (Martin Sheen), which predicted so many real-life political stories, including the 2008 match-up between Senators Obama and McCain. – Chris O’Falt

“The Sopranos” (1999-2007)
The greatness of “The Sopranos” cannot be overstated. Its lavish praise will never be hyperbolic. HBO, for all its excellent offerings, will never do anything better. David Chase’s six-season mob drama is equal parts American opus and Shakespearean drama, one that encompasses the grand spectrum of human emotion and experience (especially as it applies to strip club-loving tough guys) through the tight lens of what could be a slightly alienating focus. Mobsters have long entertained American audiences, but to distill the crime drama down to a series that is just as concerned with domestic troubles as it is with Mafia-related violence is bold indeed. Or, in other words: It’s just really, really good (and super entertaining). “The Sopranos” never shied away from its roots as a show about the mob, but it also fully embraced the kind suburban ennui that made Tony Soprano — a larger than life character — feel oddly relatable and often even kind of lovable. While Chase’s series is hardly in danger of being forgotten or maligned, its divisive final shot is often the subject of close reads that forget to acknowledge the kind of subtlety and power that ran through the entire series. It’s not just Tony’s last meal (maybe) that deserves a deep dive. It’s the entire series. – Kate Erbland

This past weekend I attended the annual Sherlock Holmes fandom celebration, a.k.a. the Bsi Weekend in New York City; a time I always thoroughly look forward to and enjoy. The weekend is great both for the setting (so much to see and do in NYC, both Sherlockian and otherwise) and for the friends (new and old) that attend.
One of the Sherlockian highlights of this year’s weekend for me was the Daintiest Thing in a Dressing Gown Pyjama Party, put on by the Baker Street Babes. I always get a kick out of costume parties, and this one featured lots of fun and creative pajama costumes, both Victorian and modern, and took place in the uber-cool and historic setting of The Players NYC (seriously – read their history page. So cool). It was a blast!

If you ask me, Stephen Colbert is the real King of the Nerds, but as Conan does his show from San Diego this week for Comic-Con, he must be pretty high up there. He proved his worth today by acing a “Comic-Con Citizenship Test” given by none other than The Nerdist himself, Chris Hardwick. The bit is hilarious, but let’s just say Seth Green, Bill Cosby, and Kaitlyn Jenner don’t quite come out unscathed.

Konnie Huq will soon take on the ultimate TV challenge in crowning the UK's King of the Nerds.
Adapted from the Us series on TBS, the Sky1 show sees 11 contestants live together in a house called 'Nerdvana' as they participate in challenges and fight to be named "the greatest nerd of them all".
Huq's husband Charlie Brooker and Game of Thrones' Hodor himself Kristian Nairn are among the stars who will challenge the geeks on their quest to ascend to the Throne of Games.
Speaking to Digital Spy and others about the series, Huq said: "It was really fun, but things that are nerdy are fun. This is why I can't believe I'm a TV presenter – people like me don't become TV presenters, I always used to think that when I became a TV presenter, sort of like 'how did this happen?'"

The problem with Betty White earning a reality TV Emmy nomination follows a pattern, overall, with the nods every year: the same predictable, safe, often inexplicable choices. I love Betty White. But she has been nominated for an Emmy the past three years in the Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program category for her work on "Off Their Rockers." Reading off a teleprompter for a few minutes as part of the hidden camera show apparently constitutes "outstanding" work as a "host," which is an insult to both words. But welcome to reality TV, the genre the industry loves to loathe. In 2007, the Emmys got it right, giving "Survivor’s” Jeff Probst the award for outstanding host. But then they kept giving it to him -- for four years straight. This is a problem beyond reality television, of course (I'm looking at you, "Modern Family"), but again, it's...

The competition between nerds is now in its third season, and you should be tuning in every Friday. Why? Super-nerdy and fun challenges A giant game of Angry Birds. A giant game of Battleship. A giant Rubik's Cube. Quidditch, complete with flying. Robots playing dodge ball. A real-life version of Tron. Nerf guns shooting down drones. Lots of quizzes on nerd-ish trivia. The show's challenges--two each episode, one team challenge and one individual challenge--play on nostalgia and pop culture. They always have a sense of humor, and they're also visually interesting, fair competitions that rival those on bigger shows. Great hosts having fun "King of the Nerds" offers a big portion of wackiness and ridiculousness with a side of self-deprecation, and it's all served on a bed of a serious competition. Hosts and executive producers Curtis Armstrong and Robert Carradine, who starred in "Revenge of the Nerds," set that tone.

There's a lot of reality TV ahead in 2015: more than 70 new and returning reality shows debut in January alone. Here's a guide to some of the highlights and lowlights, and trends that I've spotted among all the reality TV networks are flinging our way. Twists and changes come to the big shows "The Amazing Race" (CBS, Feb. 25) will, for the first time, bail on the one thing that made it different: casting people with preexisting relationships. While all 11 teams are dating couples, including a former New Kid on the Block and his boyfriend, five of the 11 teams will meet for the first time at the race's starting line. It seems like a desperate attempt to create even more drama, but it may also be interesting to see how well strangers function as a team during a race around the world. "Survivor Worlds Apart" (CBS, Feb. 25) isn't celebrating its 30th season with an all-star season,...

It is an event that draws in crowds from all over the world and features many individuals and companies showing off their latest products in the hopes that those who come to the convention will purchase whatever they’re selling. But Nycc isn’t just about pushing merchandise and entertainment, it is about togetherness and every October, geeks come to New York and they conquer.

For the last decade or so, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci's writing partnership has been one of the most lucrative in Hollywood, with a track record that includes two Transformers movies, both Star Trek movies, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Variety reports they are amicably going their separate ways as writers, so they can individually pursue directing projects. According to Variety, Kurtzman is working on a deal to oversee Universal's classic monster movies and Orci is pushing hard for Star Trek 3 (a.k.a. Star Tr3k), now that J.J. Abrams has moved on to Star Wars. Orci even has Abrams's vote for the gig, but Paramount is being cautious. Orci is already attached to the Spider-Man spinoff Venom, so if things work out, in a few years, he'll be able to compete with Abrams for the title of King of the Nerds.

Time to crown the "King of the Nerds" for Season 2. The finale kicked off with the final four -- Brian Davidson, Jack Hou, Xander Jeanneret and Kayla Lafrance -- toasting that they made it to the finals.
The first challenge is a quiz bowl format. The first two people to answer five questions correctly are in the final nerd-off, while the other two are dunzo. Jack is the first finalist, getting to five correct answers after only six questions. The other three end up tied at 4 points going into the final question but only Kayla gets it right so it's Kayla vs .Jack for the nerd title.
The final nerd-off was a crazy gauntlet of nerd activities, puzzles and games, as opposed to the Season 1 finale where the eliminated nerds got to vote on who won the $100,000 prize and it became a big popularity contest.
Both Jack and Kayla had troubles with the final gauntlet,...

A&E has pulled Those Who Kill from the schedule after two weeks. The crime drama has failed to hold onto the audience of its lead-in Bates Motel. However, A&E isn’t cancelling the show yet, the channel plans on relaunching the show.
CBS has renewed The Big Bang Theory for three seasons. That will keep the show on the air until the spring of 2017.
This works as a still from tonight’s episode or as a group reaction to the renewal.
If you want to see the best challenges in reality TV you should be watching the amazing King of the Nerds, which airs its finale tonight. Then again, it’s impossible to do any better than to have a “navigate a laser maze to rescue George Takei” challenge.

TBS has picked up a 10-episode second season of multi-camera comedy Ground Floor, created by Bill Lawrence and Greg Malins and starring Skylar Astin and Briga Heelan. The renewal extends TBS’ streak of renewing its freshman series, which includes sitcoms Men at Work and Sullivan & Son and reality comedy King of the Nerds. Ground Floor started off lower than the other two scripted comedies, drawing 1.6 million viewers for its premiere vs. 2.7 million for for Men at Work and 2.5 million for Sullivan & Son. But Ground Floor launched against much stronger competition during the November sweep; it has been pretty consistent, and TBS brass believe in its upside potential. Ground Floor finished its first season with an average of 1.8 million viewers in Live + 7 delivery, including 1.1 million adults 18-49 and 575,000 adults 18-34. The renewal keeps Lawrence and Malins with two projects each at TBS. Lawrence has series Cougar Town, while Malins has pilot Your Family or Mine.
