Carol (2015) is the film adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's 1952 novel The Price of Salt, written under the pseudonym Claire Morgan. When UK publishing house Bloomsbury acquired the rights to reissue the novel in 1990, Highsmith agreed to write an afterword where she admitted for the first time that she was the author, and also have the title changed to Carol (which she had always wanted to do). Highsmith later said that The Price of Salt title came from a thought about what happened to Lot's wife in the biblical passages about Sodom, but biographer Joan Schenkar traced it to a phrase contained in one of Highsmith's favorite novels, The Counterfeiters: "If the salt have lost its flavor wherewith shall it be salted? That is the tragedy with which I am concerned."
