When I open my Zoom session with Chicago producer Young Chop, his display photo is a picture of him shirtless, flashing a wad of cash. “Boy, that ain’t never your Zoom picture!” his manager Jessie “Jay Boogie” Green jokes. Chop flashes a beaming grin when he turns his camera on, riding in the passenger seat while traveling through his native Chicago. His trademark locs are gone. Instead, he’s rocking a small Afro. He says he took the money-flashing photo at 18, in 2012, after reaping the rewards from his work with Chief Keef,...

The universe of Clawville returns in “Chicken Police: Into the Hive!” a noir detective adventure set three years after the cataclysmic events of the first game. This visual novel, created by The Wild Gentlemen, continues the story of detective Sonny Featherland, immersing players in a dark, multilayered storyline that challenges the boundaries of the anthropomorphic detective genre.
This isn’t simply another point-and-click adventure; it’s a deep dive into a fractured society on the verge of disaster. Following the demise of the Wessler crime syndicate, Clawville has sunk into even greater instability. Rival gangs battle for control, the police force is decimated, and the enigmatic Hive, a segregated ghetto for the city’s insect population, erupts with tension and unresolved conflict.
Players will have to navigate a world where every word is important, every choice has consequences, and the line between justice and survival becomes increasingly blurred. With its own visual design,...

A hallmark of Robert Zemeckis' iconic trio of sci-fi comedy films, the Back to the Future franchise features many running jokes that consistently pop up across the course of the trilogy. The form and delivery of these commonalities vary wildly, from parallel situations and pieces of dialogue to full-on parodies of other pieces of popular culture. Whatever the method of delivery for these running jokes, they all have one thing in common; an innate ability to entertain whoever is watching.
Spread out evenly across the three films, some of these recurring gags are instantly apparent, while others only make themselves obvious upon later viewing. The trilogy is loaded with trivia and Easter Eggs, meaning that it's entirely possible to miss out on every single recurring joke upon first viewing. We’re a long way from the world of 1990s animation. New animation houses emerged with a splintering at Disney and the rise of Cartoon Network. Two animators who benefited from this world were Cinzia Angelini and David Feiss — the directors of the new release Hitpig. While Angelini found a home at DreamWorks, Feiss created Cartoon Cartoon hits Cow & Chicken and I Am Weasel. With Hitpig, the two animators-turned-directors have an opportunity to create a project that blends modern technology with nineties humor. Both Angelini and Feiss sat down with FandomWire to discuss their new film, the importance of independent animation, and adding Jason Sudeikis to Hitpig at the last minute.

The Pixies’s The Night the Zombies Came sees the first major change in personnel for the band since Paz Lenchantin took over as bassist and backing vocalist a decade ago. Lenchantin, who was unceremoniously removed from the lineup earlier this year, has been replaced by English musician and visual artist Emma Richardson, formerly of Band of Skulls. Richardson, whose vocals are featured prominently throughout, sings an octave above lead singer Black Francis, who even steps away from the mic on occasion to let her sing solo.
Richardson’s harmonies on songs like “Chicken” and “Mercy Me” are positively Beatles-esque, and by default probably the most conventionally beautiful moments in the Pixies’s discography to date. But her youthful and precise voice isn’t there solely to beautify or even balance out Black Francis’s increasingly monotone growl. As she demonstrates on “Motoroller,” which features the album’s most potent guitar riff,...

Pixies have shared “Motoroller,” the latest new song off their forthcoming album The Night the Zombies Came.
Built from both an acoustic and electric guitar line, “Motoroller” travels by “scooter” through Berlin, with vocalist Black Francis offering various vague details that pop up along his ride. Meanwhile, new vocalist and bassist Emma Richardson (formerly of Band of Skulls) takes Francis’ melodies up the octave and offers a handful of satisfying vocal harmonies.

Panic World is a weekly podcast that investigates how a trend that started in a dark corner of the internet eventually made its way out into the real world. Peacock's new crime thriller Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist tells a shocking but true-to-life story of the 1970 heist that occurred in Atlanta on the heels of Muhammad Ali's comeback fight against Jerry Quarry. The series is inspired by iHeart Radio's similarly titled true-crime podcast and dramatized to depict the half-century-old criminal case from what series creator Shaye Ogbanna calls "a character perspective," according to Today. Ogbanna unites Fight Night's star-studded cast with a well-crafted script to bring the show's characters to life - and thus far, his conceptualization of the catastrophe has proven to be a hit with viewers.
The series released its first three episodes on September 5 to a very positive critical reception, as indicated by Fight Night's current Rotten Tomatoes score. Bestowing the series with an impressive 93% approval rating, top Rt critics generally agree that Fight Night has the right combination of talent and story to entertain.

The first episode of Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist was centered around two things: Chicken Man’s decision to host a lavish party on the night of Muhammad Ali’s return to the ring and, well, Muhammad Ali’s return to the ring. While Chicken Man pulled all kinds of strings to get the wealthiest people to his “private casino,” so that he could earn a bunch of money, Detective Jd Hudson grappled with the pressure of being Ali’s personal bodyguard on the big night. The situation got tense for both parties because Chicken Man had to deal with the snobbery of his biggest potential investor, the notorious Frank Moten, as well as the tantrums of the gangster, Javi Lopez, and Hudson had to deflect the violent racists who were baying for Ali’s blood. Things take a turn for the worse, at least for Chicken Man, when...

As opposed to the artists of the computer animation community, stop-motion workers don’t have a labor union that can protect them from on-the-job hazards, ensure their livelihoods and advocate for them in abusive workplaces — and they never will, if Seth Green and Stoopid Buddy Stoodios get their way.
In a TV landscape where budgetary limitations and tightened production schedules has led to most animated shows sporting a soulless aesthetic “sameness,” the long-running Adult Swim sketch series Robot Chicken stands out as a bastion of traditional, “practical” animation. Stop-motion animation is, inarguably, far slower and more laborious than the computer-assisted alternatives, but Robot Chicken and its production company, Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, have almost single-handedly kept the art form alive — or, it would be more apt to say, the stop-motion artists of Stoopid Buddy Stoodios are doing the hard work of preserving the medium with every painstakingly staged frame of Green’s flagship series.

Sometimes, trying to find movies that work for the whole family is difficult. They’re either too graphic or scary for the younger members of the family, or they’re too kiddy-ish for the teenagers. Netflix is bringing some great family movies throughout September 2024, though.
There is a mixture of animated and live action throughout the month. There are older and newer movies to check out, so there’s no need for kids to say “we’ve already watched this one” to get out of family movie night.

Pixies have announced a brand new album called The Night the Zombies Came. It’s due for release just in time for Halloween — October 25th, to be exact — via BMG.
As its title and release date suggest, Pixies’ new album is at least partially inspired by the spooky season. Among the “disparate wonders” that inform the 13-track LP are “Druidism, apocalyptic shopping malls, mediaeval themed restaurants, 12th century poetic form, surf rock, gargoyles, bog people, and the distinctive dry drum sound of 1970s era Fleetwood Mac,” according to a press release.

Hammer Films returns to life with a new owner and a new slate of movies, and up first is the Eddie Izzard-starring Doctor Jekyll. The studio has released a second Doctor Jekyll trailer this afternoon, giving a closer look at the horror-induced insanity ahead.
Look for Doctor Jekyll in US theaters and VOD on August 2, 2024.
Director Joe Stephenson, of acclaimed drama “Chicken” and feature documentary “McKellen: Playing the Part,” developed the new adaptation of the classic tale from Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 novella with first time writer Dan Kelly-Mulhern.
Doctor Jekyll focuses on a reclusive Nina Jekyll finding friendship with her newly hired help, Rob, played by rising star Scott Chambers, who must work together to prevent Hyde from destroying her life.
The film is described as “a slow-burn gothic horror that delves into themes of duality, concocting a surprising mix of dark humor and flashes of camp within a twisted fairytale.

It’s not a bad gig working with Seth Green and the gang at Stoopid Buddy Stoodios. They’re the crew behind the goofy animation on Robot Chicken, Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. and Crossing Swords. And now they’re getting another crack at an epic Simpsons couch gag.
“Did you see @stoopidbuddystoodios new @thesimpsons couch gag?” asked Green in his latest Instagram post. “We are beyond thrilled to be a part of this iconic history.”
It’s a journey to the center of the Simpsons’ couch, with Homer pulling on a loose thread that sends him falling between the cushions. As 2D cartoon Homer plummets into the depths of Inner Sofa, he is somehow transformed into a 3D, crocheted version of himself where he’ll confront all of the lost treasures that live inside his aging furniture.
“I wondered what was down here,” Homer marvels as he begins his exploration. The first treasure he finds?...

How now, what news: the Criterion Channel’s July lineup is here. Eight pop renditions of Shakespeare are on the docket: from movies you forgot were inspired by the Bard (Abel Ferrara’s China Girl) to ones you’d wish to forget altogether (Joss Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing), with maybe my single favorite interpretation (Michael Almereyda’s Hamlet) alongside Paul Mazursky, Gus Van Sant, Baz Luhrmann, Derek Jarman, and (of course) Kenneth Branagh. A neonoir collection arrives four months ahead of Noirvember: two Ellroy adaptations, two from De Palma that are not his neonoir Ellroy adaptation, two from the Coen brothers (i.e. the chance to see a DVD-stranded The Man Who Wasn’t There in HD), and––finally––a Michael Winner picture given Criterion’s seal of approval.

Abby Mallard is a beloved Disney character, standing out for her warmth, humor, and wisdom in Chicken Little. Voiced by Joan Cusack, Abby was almost played by other notable actresses, such as Jodie Foster, Laura Dern, and Madonna. Despite being originally conceived as a male character, Abby's speech impediment and resilience make her an inspiration.
Despite not fitting the mold of a conventional Disney heroine, the Abby duck in Chicken Little remains a beloved figure in Disney's animated pantheon. The story of Chicken Little, Walt Disney Animation's first fully computer-animated venture, revolves around a pint-sized rooster high-schooler and his motley crew of animal misfits who must save their town from an alien invasion. The quirky 2005 movie marked a significant departure from Disney's traditional hand-drawn animation style and introduced audiences to a new era of storytelling. One of the standout characters is Abby Mallard, Chicken Littles reliable confidante and eventual love interest.

In Chiara Malta and Sébastien Laudenbach’s Chicken for Linda!, Paulette (Clotilde Hesme) feels guilty about punishing her eight-year-old daughter, Linda (Mélinée Leclerc), for something she didn’t do. To make things up to Linda, Paulette agrees to prepare the dish that was her late husband’s specialty: chicken with peppers. The day of the dinner, though, coincides with a widespread strike, closing all the grocery stores across town and forcing Paulette, with Linda in tow, to improvise. What follows is a charming, madcap race to the dinner table that manages to rope in bumbling cops, a determined older sister, and live poultry.
Chicken for Linda! is beautifully animated in a style that has its roots in the hand-painted aesthetic of Laudenbach’s 2016 film The Girl Without Hands, though it feels completely distinctive. The Pokémon anime effectively conveys ideas and tells stories through nonverbal communication, utilizing the characters' designs, body language, and expressive faces. The "Pikachu" shorts and episodes focusing on Pokémon without humans demonstrate the anime's ability to create compelling scenes without dialogue, relying on music and emotions to convey the intended tone. The Pokémon's expressive nature and unique ways of saying their names help enhance the storytelling in the anime, making it a master of storytelling without dialogue.
One of the Pokémon anime's most impressive features has also at times been one of its most maligned: episodes focusing heavily on Pokémon, with little dialog from human characters. Since Pokémon can only say their own names, they're fairly limited in what they can convey through speech, and it's all the other ways that the anime gets ideas across using Pokémon that are truly impressive.

As the end of the 20th century came to a close, traditional 2D animation seemed to be dying along with it. But while Disney Renaissance films are often remembered by nostalgic Millennials as the last great ride of hand-drawn animation, their grand, sweeping scale was actually made possible by blending old-school techniques with brand new technology. In the ballroom scene from 1991's "Beauty and the Beast," a hand-drawn Belle and Beast waltz against the spinning backdrop of a CG-animated ballroom; the heart-stopping stampede in 1994's "The Lion King" has a traditionally-animated Simba fleeing from computer-animated wildebeest.
The balance soon tipped over in favor of the completely CG animation that dominates today. But somewhere between the release of "Toy Story" and "Shrek," a British studio called Aardman Animations ambitiously embarked on its first feature film: a poultry-themed spin on "The Great Escape" called "Chicken Run." With a final tally of $227.7 million at the global box office,...

Chicken Soup For The Soul, owner of Redbox, Crackle and Screenvision and the self-described largest purveyor of content to” value-conscious consumers,” saw sales soar to $110 million in the first quarter from $29 million. Tvod revenue is picking up, CEO Bill Rouhana told Wall Streeters, a precursor to a run on Redbox movie kiosks given the improved Hollywood pipeline.
The company has a rocky start to 2023. It announced its fourth-quarter and full-year numbers March 31, just six weeks ago, to coincide with a capital raise aimed at seeing it through a challenging time. But now “the movies are here,” Rouhana said on a call after earnings. He said 27 major theatrical releases will cycle through between May and July — “exactly what we were looking for since we took over Redbox.”
Chicken Soup acquired Redbox in a $375 million-deal in August of 2022.

Director Joe Stephenson’s Doctor Jekyll, “a modern interpretation” of Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, wrapped production over a year ago, and while we continue to wait to hear when we’re going to have a chance to see the movie, Fangoria has unveiled a new image that shows gender fluid comedian/actor Eddie Izzard (The Lost Symbol) as Doctor Nina Jekyll. You can take a look at the image on the Fangoria website, or at the bottom of this article.

Eddie Izzard stars in the upcoming Doctor Jekyll from Hammer Studios, and our friends over at Fangoria have shared an exclusive first-look image with us this afternoon.

There is a scene in the middle of The Last Shift in which our two main characters–Stanley (Richard Jenkins) and Jevon (Shane Paul McGhie)–get into an argument regarding the tragic fate of a young African-American student who was killed many years before at the local high school. It’s the scene that seems to encapsulate the movie best. Jevon is a young, African-American man himself with dreams of being a writer. Stanley is quite a bit older, saddled with a sick mother down in Florida. He’s very proud of the work he does at Oscar’s Chicken and Fish, a fast-food joint in the middle of this small town of Albion, Michigan. After thirty-eight years, Stanley is retiring and passing off the reins of the graveyard shift to Jevon, who at first can’t be bothered to care.
It’s a promising premise that never really cashes in.

• Observer critics’ reviews of the year in full
Every year we hear the same horror story; that cinema is overrun by formulaic franchise fodder, with nothing but superheroes and sequels on display. Yet turn your attention away from the monotony of the multiplexes, where the dreary Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the disappointing Suicide Squad may rule the roost, and the picture is quite different. At independent cinemas around the UK, we are constantly reminded of the stunning breadth and scope of modern movies, thanks to films such as Peter Middleton and James Spinney’s electrifying Notes on Blindness, an exceptional sensory experience, based on the audiotape memoirs of theologian John M Hull.
Notes on Blindness was just one of several superb homemade indie pics released in the UK this year.

Scott Chambers gives a detailed and affecting performance as a young man with learning difficulties
This very affecting feature debut from director Joe Stephenson, adapted from Freddie Machin’s play by Chris New, centres on a teenager with learning difficulties (Scott Chambers, superb) who communicates more easily with animals – both dead and alive – than with people. Living in a caravan with his volatile and violent brother Polly (a convincingly wired Morgan Watkins), 15-year-old Richard befriends Yasmin Paige’s Annabel, whose family owns the land they live on. With its clash of natural beauty and societal disorder, Chicken nods towards the template of Ken Loach’s Kes, with Richard doting on pet hen Fiona, a symbol of his own flightless yet nurturing plight. Like the young Leonardo DiCaprio in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Chambers’s performance has tuning-fork precision, his slightly skewed physical movements and scattershot speech creating a childlike...

★★★★☆ In an age of Marvel multiplex hegemony, Chicken - from London-based filmmaker Joe Stephenson - is the kind of low-budget British indie which restores faith in cinema as a means of genuine storytelling with well-rounded, engaging characters. Receiving a glowing endorsement from none other than Sir Ian McKellen, this debut feature needs no further introduction but announces the arrival of a promising young director with a tale of acceptance, hardship and perseverance which reaches far beyond its insular location.
