Grossed over One Billion Yen (US$10 Million) in two weeks making it the fastest film based on a late night television program to do so and beating the previous record holder, K-On! The Movie (2011). It eventually surpassed K-ON to become the highest grossing film based on a late night television program.
Gen Urobuchi said the plot of the film also happens to mirror the lyrics to the Kalafina song, Magia, the original ending theme song to the TV series of which this film follows up from.
Gen Urobuchi first started writing this as a second season of Puella Magi Madoka Magica (2011). His vision became a theatrical movie instead due to length issues.
Contains 2300 shots, double the rate of a regular animated movie.
This film reunites Yuki Kajiura and singer Aira Yuuki making it their first collaboration since 2005.
