In just a few weeks the multiplexes will give way to the big, brash Summer blockbusters. Too late for last year’s Oscars (in the Us at least) is this historical true-life romantic drama, which, oddly enough, shares several figures and settings from one of last year’s award nominees. Mr. Turner told the story of one of the nineteenth century’s most celebrated painters. Many of that film’s scenes were set at the prestigious Royal Academy of Art, where the merits of different works were vigorously debated. One of the strongest voices was that of John Ruskin, fellow artist, historian, and critic. Now comes the story that didn’t make it into the Timothy Spall biopic, a scandalous tale concerning the marriage of Mr. Ruskin and the much younger Effie Gray.
At the film opens, the narration tells us of the courtship of now nineteen year-old Effie (Dakota Fanning...

Director Richard Glatzer, partner of Wash Westmoreland, died at age 63 on Tuesday, March 10 at their home in Los Angeles, California. Richard was afflicted by A.L.S. (motor neurone disease) when we spoke in New York last summer at the Trump Soho Hotel on Kevin Kline's portrayal of Errol Flynn in their film The Last Of Robin Hood. He communicated with me by tapping out his voiced response on an iPad. His wit came through in every answer he gave. He called Susan Sarandon "a young soul" and Dakota Fanning an "old" soul in their roles as Florence and Beverly Aadland.

Film and celluloid is going the way of vinyl. The shift from tactile mediums to ones and zeroes has happened so quickly that for a while it had looked like these records and film strips that we had used to record our artistic history for the entire 20th century would suddenly become obsolete and erased forever. While vinyl has experienced a resurgence among those who truly love music, the already struggling movie theaters and multiplexes have all but done away with film in place of digital projection. Kodak’s film sales have dropped 96 percent in the last decade.

Filmmaker Richard Glatzer, best known for co-writing and co-directing Still Alice alongside his husband Wash Westmoreland, died Tuesday from complications due to Als. He was 63.
Glatzer was first diagnosed with Als in 2011 when he began working on adapting Still Alice from a novel by Lisa Genova. As production progressed, his condition deteriorated severely, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Julianne Moore won an Oscar for her performance in the film, which tells the story of a woman suffering from degenerative Alzheimer’s.

Two days before the Academy Awards ceremony, Glatzer was rushed to the hospital after suffering from respiratory problems. According to Westmoreland, he and Glatzer watched the gala event from the hospital ward.
Glatzer and Westmoreland met in 1995 and got married in 2013. During their time together, they worked on several other well-received projects including the 2001 drama The Fluffer, the 2006 family drama Quinceanera, and the 2011 Errol Flynn biopic The Last of Robin Hood.

Today is a sad day in the world of Independent Cinema. Richard Glatzer, the co-director and screenwriter of “Still Alice,” has passed away after a four-year battle with Als. Born on January 28, 1952 in Flushing Queens, Glatzer first came to prominence with his directorial debut “Grief.” The 1993 drama premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and was partly inspired by his experience with the loss of his partner, Donald Ray Berry, to AIDS. In 1995, Glatzer met Wash Westmoreland and they became life partners. Their professional collaborations included “The Fluffer” (2001), “Quinceañera” (2006), which won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award, “The Last of Robin Hood” (2013) and the aforementioned “Still Alice.” The latter became the biggest success of Glatzer’s career and star Julianne Moore won the Best Actress Oscar for her performance at the Academy Awards last month. Glatzer was unable to attend the “Alice’s” world premiere at the 2014 Toronto Film Festival,...

Still Alice co-director Richard Glatzer has died, aged 63.
The filmmaker passed away following a long battle with neurodegenerative disease Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Als), according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Glatzer's death came just two weeks after Julianne Moore won a Best Actress Academy Award for her portrayal of a professor battling early-onset Alzheimer's disease in Still Alice.
The writer-director was not in attendance because he was hospitalised two days before the Oscars ceremony for respiratory issues.
Glatzer was diagnosed with Als just before he and husband Wash Westmoreland began adapting Lisa Genova's novel Still Alice.
The filmmaking partners also directed the 2006 family drama Quinceañera and the Errol Flynn biopic The Last of Robin Hood.

Julianne Moore as Alice in Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland's candid Still Alice: "She welcomed the role without any trepidation."
Alec Baldwin's character, Julianne Moore's connection to Robert Altman's Short Cuts and Lyle Lovett's If I Had A Boat sung by Karen Elson, fame for Errol Flynn in The Last of Robin Hood, starring Kevin Kline, Dakota Fanning and Susan Sarandon are remembered. James Keach's Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me, The Time of the Harvest, Elizabeth Bishop and Bruno Barreto's Reaching For The Moon, Rita Hayworth, Marcel Proust, and Stacey Battat's costumes come into our conversation about Still Alice. Alice's children are played by Kate Bosworth, Hunter Parrish and Kristen Stewart.
Anne-Katrin Titze: You quote Elizabeth Bishop's The Art Of Losing. It's beautifully used by Alice.
Kristen Stewart as Lydia: "Lydia is away on the other coast and becomes very significant in the story.

Almost immediately after its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in September, Still Alice thrust its star Julianne Moore into the frontrunner spot for this year’s Best Actress Oscar race. Sony Pictures Classics immediately made a deal to pick up the film and said it would qualify it for the Academy Awards. That qualifying run begins today, and there’s no question Moore will be among the five nominees when they are named January 15.
As I say in my review above, Moore’s portrayal of Alice Howland, a woman in the prime of life who finds out she has early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, is easily one of this fine actresses’ finest — and that’s saying a lot as Moore has been nominated four times previously for an Oscar and won the Emmy for playing Sarah Palin in Game Change. Four-time Academy Award nominee Julianne Moore is featured in this first poster for Sony Classics Pictures Still Alice. The film was an Official Selection at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival.
In the film, Alice Howland, happily married with three grown children, is a renowned linguistics professor who starts to forget words. When she receives a diagnosis of Early-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease, Alice and her family find their bonds thoroughly tested. Her struggle to stay connected to who she once was is frightening, heartbreaking, and inspiring.
Still Alice is based on the book Still Alice by Lisa Genova.
Writers-Directors Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland made Sundance history in 2006 when Quinceañera won both the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize. It went on to win numerous other prizes, including the Humanitas screenwriting Award, and the John Cassavettes Spirit Award in 2007. With the last gasp of the Toronto International Film Festival now upon us (it officially closes Sunday,) the Oscar race has become further defined, particularly with input from Venice and Telluride. Until that fall fest trifecta, only IFC’s summer phenomenon Boyhood and perhaps Sony Pictures Classics’ Foxcatcher could realistically be thought to be in serious contention for Best Picture consideration. Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel has been mentioned in some quarters, but that movie came out in March, and when was the last time a March release made the list of Best Picture nominees?

A gorgeous period piece about great movie stars in decline. Kevin Kline as Errol Flynn. Susan Sarandon in a stunning performance. References to one of my favorite novels, Lolita.
So why did The Last of Robin Hood leave me completely cold and even slightly disgusted?
This story about Flynn's last days and his relationship with Beverly Aadland, whom he met when she was 15, feels pointless and even occasionally dull. Perhaps it's meant to be another installment in a series of Realistic Portrayals of Stories from Hollywood Babylon, along with The Cat's Meow ... but that movie had style, humor and character depth that this movie lacks. Filmmakers Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland portrayed teenage characters much more successfully in their previous feature, Quinceanera.

Chicago – The term “in like Flynn” still gets used, when delusional dudes think they have the score. The saying is a product of former matinee idol Errol Flynn, whose tastes in young girls inspired the saying. Kevin Kline portrays him, and his tastes, in “The Last of Robin Hood.”
Rating: 3.5/5.0
This is a decent character study – written and directed by the tandem of Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland – but has no real dramatic arcs or mysteries solved. However, there is plenty of bizarre 1950s-style tabloid coverage to drink in, and Susan Sarandon is gunning for Meryl Streep’s stranglehold on playing woman character roles of a certain age. Her mother role is delicious, and gives her a chance to be drunk and disorderly. Kline is perfectly suited for the aging Errol Flynn, much as he portrayed the aging Cole Porter and Douglas Fairbanks in previous films. He has the old-timey star look and attitude,...

As we bid goodbye to the Summer action blockbusters, we say hello once more to the serious slate of films looking to pick up award gold in the last few months of the year. And what better subject matter than the true story or the biographical or “bio-pic”? Maybe a good mix of the two, and since Hollywood enjoys celebrating itself why not tackle one of its greatest stars? Though not as highly merchandised today at contemporaries Bogart, Monroe, or Hepburn (either one), few stars shone as brightly in that golden age than Errol Flynn, king of the silver screen swashbucklers. Now Flynn was played by the similarly dashing Jude Law ten years ago in the Howard Hughes story, The Aviator. And previously he was parodied wonderfully by Peter O’Toole as Alan Swann in the raucous comic gem My Favorite Year in 1982 and by former Bond Timothy Dalton as...

If all the world’s stage, then surely some players crave the spotlight more than others. And if ever there was a player, it was Errol Flynn. The Last of Robin Hood tells the twisted story of three people who will do almost anything for fame. That each must settle for infamy is one of the juicy, yet unexplored ironies in a movie that doesn’t know which story it wants to tell. By taking an evenhanded and humanistic approach to such salacious subject matter, the filmmakers have effectively squashed any possibility for tawdry fun. Instead, we get a bone-dry historical drama that skimps on the history and bypasses the drama entirely.
For most casual moviegoers, the name ‘Errol Flynn’ means one of three things: absolutely nothing, Robin Hood, or the expression, “In like Flynn.

Looking at the slate for the Toronto International Film Festival, it can be easy to overlook smaller movies that may not have the same buzz as higher profile titles. But if you take a closer look, you'll find films with big names just waiting to be discovered, and one to keep an eye on is "Still Alice." Co-directed by Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland ("The Last Of Robin Hood"), the drama stars Julianne Moore, Kristen Stewart, Alec Baldwin, Kate Bosworth and Hunter Parrish, and tells the story of a professor who receives a life-changing diagnosis that affects everyone around her. Here's the official synopsis: Renowned linguistics professor Dr. Alice Howland (the always-extraordinary Julianne Moore, also at the Festival in Maps to the Stars) knows the truth of Bishop's poetic insight as well as anyone. Diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's, Alice learns the art of losing every day. At first, Alzheimer's means...

Beverly Center: Flynn’s Final Scandal Makes for Interesting Cinematic Footnote
It’s been eight years since Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland’s 2006 sophomore film, Quinceanera swept up the Audience and Grand Jury Prize awards at the Sundance Film Festival. The directing duo is back with a re-ignition of an old Hollywood scandal in The Last of Robin Hood, a glance at the final years of Errol Flynn and his romantic entanglement with a female minor. While the material is unerringly fascinating and features a trio of notable names, it’s a rendition that feels a bit too polished and hardly as seedy as it should be. It seems attempts have been made to assuage unnecessary heartache to the relatives of the ingénue at the center of this strange ménage-a-trois, and the resulting film seems a heavily polished reenactment too apprehensive to really get its hands dirty. Yet, the...

Dakota Fanning is all grown up! The actress and college student is back on the big screen in her Aug. 29 film The Last of Robin Hood, based on the true - and at the time, very scandalous - story of actor Errol Flynn's affair with a teenage actress named Beverly Aadland. At a recent press day for the movie, Dakota spoke about her own adventures as a young performer in Hollywood and how she plans to keep appearing before the camera for years to come.

Errol Flynn (Kevin Kline) Beverly Aadland (Dakota Fanning) toast in The Last of Robin Hood: "And behind this facade of strength is actually someone who is thinking twice."
We continue our conversation with directors Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland, discussing Stanley Kubrick's Lolita connection to Errol Flynn, costume designer Orry-Kelly's role beyond the likes of Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis and Ethel Barrymore in Hollywood, and the palettes in Otto Preminger's Bonjour Tristesse, Richard Quine's Strangers When We Meet and Alfred Hitchcock's North By Northwest. Kevin Kline, Dakota Fanning and Susan Sarandon with Matt Kane, Bryan Batt and Max Casella star in The Last Of Robin Hood.
Anne-Katrin Titze: When I spoke with Jane Pollard and Iain Forsyth about 20,000 Days On Earth, which is their documentary on Nick Cave, little did I expect that your film and theirs would have something in common. And that is Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita.

Kevin Kline, Dakota Fanning and Susan Sarandon in Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland's The Last Of Robin Hood: "The real Errol Flynn can't quite live up to Errol Flynn, the idol."
In a Trump SoHo Hotel suite, high above the city, I met up with The Last Of Robin Hood directors Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland for a conversation on Kevin Kline's portrayal of Errol Flynn. Susan Sarandon and Dakota Fanning as Florence and Beverly Aadland led us to Marjorie Morningstar, starring Gene Kelly and Natalie Wood - Too Much, Too Soon and the Barrymore clan - Groucho Marx and You Bet Your Life - John Huston's Roots Of Heaven and all the way down to Barry Mahon's Cuban Rebel Girls.
Earlier, I had spoken with Jane Pollard and Iain Forsyth about 20,000 Days On Earth, their documentary on and with Nick Cave, at the Regency Hotel.

Susan Sarandon is a major stage mom — not to daughter Eva Amurri, but to Dakota Fanning, who portrays teenage starlet Beverly Aadland in The Last of Robin Hood, opening Friday. Directed by Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland, the Samuel Goldwyn Films release casts Sarandon as Florence Aadland, who watched — and encouraged — her daughter as she became the object of affection to swashbuckling movie star Errol Flynn (Kevin Kline), and then cashed in on his passing with her own book. The real-life Lolita story has Sarandon reflecting on the dark sides of Hollywood's bright lights — her character was an aspiring

Dakota Fanning has spoken about how she coped with growing up in the public eye.
The 20-year-old rose to fame at the age of 7 in the 2001 film I Am Sam and has since gone on to appear in Charlotte's Web, Hounddog and The Twilight Saga.
Speaking to Town & Country magazine, the actress insisted that it is possible to lead a private life in show business if you choose to.
"I'm just never going to parade my personal life," Fanning explained. "If you choose to not do it, it's not hard to not do it... Any part of an artistic business is made better by there being a little mystery. That's what movies are about."
However, the actress said it has not been an easy ride.
"Because people saw me grow up, there's this weird sort of ownership that they feel for me and that is... difficult," she continued.

Chicago – The countdown to the Chicago International Film Festival’s 50th Anniversary in October continued on June 28th, 2014, at the Gala Celebration at the Four Seasons Hotel in Chicago. Oscar winning actor Kevin Kline was honored at the event, and answered a few questions on the Red Carpet beforehand.
Kevin Kline was born in St. Louis, and grew up in a musically oriented family – his father owned a record store there. He went on to study at Indiana University in their top-rated School of Music, but switched to acting and drama after joining an on-campus theater group. After graduation in 1970, he went to New York City to attend the Julliard School in their newly formed Drama Division. From that study he joined fellow students like Patti LuPone in the City Center Acting Company, which performed Shakespeare and other classical works around the country.

Samuel Goldwyn Films has released the new trailer and poster for their upcoming film The Last Of Robin Hood starring Kevin Kline, Susan Sarandon & Dakota Fanning.
Errol Flynn, the swashbuckling Hollywood star and notorious ladies man, flouted convention all his life, but never more brazenly than in his last years when, swimming in vodka and unwilling to face his mortality, he undertook a liaison with an aspiring actress, Beverly Aadland.
The two had a high-flying affair that spanned the globe and was enabled by the girl’s fame-obsessed mother, Florence. It all came crashing to an end in October 1959, when events forced the relationship into the open, sparking an avalanche of publicity castigating Beverly and her mother – which only fed Florence’s need to stay in the spotlight. The Last Of Robin Hood is a story about the desire for fame and the price it exacts.

Isn't it about time that Kevin Kline get some Academy recognition? A Fish Called Wanda aside, he seems like he's ripe for that "King's Speech role" that takes a reliable actor, and gives him a great script to chew through. While I don't think The Last Of Robin Hood is it, I do think Kline fits in nicely with that old-timey sentimentality. Take in old Hollywood here: The synopsis goes a little something like this: The Last of Robin Hood is the true story of Beverly...

Not at all a follow-up to the 2010 Ridley Scott epic, The Last Of Robin Hood revolves around Errol Flynn, the famous swashbuckler who played the Nottingham outlaw 70 years before Russell Crowe. Kevin Kline stars as the roguish Flynn, in the story of his relationship with chorus girl Beverley Aadland (Dakota Fanning) and her controlling mother Florence (Susan Sarandon). Following its life on the festival circuit, here's a new trailer.Flynn, as the trailer makes clear, had spent a decade treating every day as his last when, aged 50, he met the 17-year-old Aadland and began his romantic pursuit. The struggling actress had had tiny roles in Death Of A Salesman and South Pacific and, encouraged by her mother, saw the attention of Flynn as a career opportunity. The pair worked together on 1959's Cuban Rebel Girls, not quite with the results Aadland hoped for, and were considered to head up Stanley Kubrick...

Though The Aviator did feature Jude Law as a brawling, amorous version of Errol Elynn, we have yet to see a solid biopic about the Hollywood icon. The Last of Robin Hood, from directors Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland (Quinceanera), may come closer than any before it though, but even it won’t take a traditional approach to chronicling Flynn’s life. Instead, it focuses on his final days, as Flynn (Kevin Kline) scandalously romances a young starlet (Dakota Fanning) before dying from a heart attack at the age of 50.
A new trailer for The Last of Robin Hood has landed online today, making a strong case for the period drama. In its light tone and focus on old Hollywood glamor, it seems to hew closely to My Week with Marilyn and The Artist, blending committed performances with a quippy script and golden-hued cinematography.

Swashbuckling screen icon Errol Flynn, who made his way from Australia to Hollywood in the 1930s, comes to life in "The Last of Robin Hood," a snapshot of the 1950s winter of his career -- when he infamously pursued teenager Bevery Aadland. It stars Kevin Kline, Dakota Fanning and Susan Sarandon. Watch the glamorously saucy trailer below. This latest behind-the-scenes Hollywood flick (See "Hitchcock," "My Week with Marilyn") from writers/directors Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland ("Quinceanera") bowed at Toronto last Fall. While critics were not in love with the film -- with Variety citing that it "defangs" the "wild and crazy" source material" -- other critics, such as Rex Reed per the trailer, admire Kline's "king-size" performance as the illusive screen icon. Samuel Goldwyn brings the film to Us theaters on August 29.

"I've lived every day as if it were my last," explains Kevin Kline in the new trailer for his latest film, "The Last of Robin Hood," in which he portrays the famous playboy and Robin Hood actor Errol Flynn. The film, primarily a comedy with hints of melodrama, was written and directed by regular collaborators Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland ("Quinceañera"). The much younger Dakota Fanning shows up as his young muse and love interest Beverly, in whose unpromising acting career Flynn invests at the price of his own. Meanwhile, Susan Sarandon plays Beverly's equally invested, though with less to lose, fame-hungry mother. This is not a new story— an older, more powerful man having an obsessive affair with a young potential starlet, with the inevitable ensuing drama of jealousy and deception. Yet, "Robin Hood" takes a much lighter tone, particularly by casting the reliably comical Kline and Sarandon and focusing on.

Handsome, dashing, popular ... movie legend Errol Flynn had the world in the palm of his hand during his heydey, but when the '40s rolled around, her personal life overcame his onscreen persona. A trial for statutory rape—from which he was acquitted after a very public trial—forever damaged his reputation. And the upcoming "The Last Of Robin Hood" documents the fall of one of Hollywood's greatest icons. Kevin Kline plays the handsome actor, who starts a relationship with the very young Beverly Aadland (Dakota Fanning) under the premise of helping her acting career, and the two are soon embroiled in an affair. Some of this is enabled by Beverly's stage mom Florence (Susan Sarandon), but when the relationship spills out into the media, there's not much anyone can do stop what's coming. Filmmaker tandem Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland know a thing or two about being on opposite ends of luck. It wasn’t for a lack of trying, but after breaking out with Quinceañera at Sundance back in 2006 (it got picked up by Spc and generated good box-office numbers), the pair had difficulties setting up their sophomore feature. They got their groove back when they dug into Hollywood folklore and sifted thru silver screen legend Errol Flynn‘s timeline – the lucky actor who hit jackpot and had a life that mimicked the notion of rags to riches to rags. An example of a film that might have got lost in the abyss of films presented at Tiff last September, but that might nudge out an afterlife theatrically, The Wrap reports that Samuel Goldwyn Films have picked up The Last of Robin Hood. A fall release is expected.
