The recently released film &#39;About Family&#39;(Daegajok) surprises audiences not because Lee Seung-gi shaved his head, but because director Yang Woo-seok has created a human drama. Yang, who previously directed the politically and militarily charged films The Attorney (2013), Steel Rain (2017), and Steel Rain 2: Summit (2020), has shifted his focus from the ticking time bomb of inter-Korean tensions to the intimate dynamics of family. In this film, he crafts a story of lineage and relationships through sperm donation and dumplings. Set in an old traditional Korean house-turned-restaurant called &quot;Pyeongmanok,&quot; located amid Seoul&#39;s modern high-rise buildings, the story revolves around Ham Moo-ok (played by Kim Yun-seok), a man who fled to the South during the Korean War and has run the restaurant for decades. His entire life has been devoted to making dumplings, even saving on toilet paper to reinvest in his craft. His greatest regret? That his only son, Ham Moon-seok (played by Lee Seung-gi), left home to join a Buddhist monastery-despite being his only blood relative and a student at a prestigious medical school. One day, two children unexpectedly arrive at Pyeongmanok, claiming to be Moon-seok&#39;s kids, the result of sperm donations he made during his medical school days. For Moo-ok, this revelation is both shocking and joyful-it means his family line may continue. From here, a human drama of hope, despair, and unexpected twists surrounding the concept of &quot;genes&quot; unfolds. Kim Yun-seok&#39;s portrayal of Ham Moo-ok is quintessential. A man shaped by the tragedies of war, Moo-ok represents the archetypal patriarch-one who survived the Korean War, lost his only sister in its chaos, and devoted his life to work and family, even at the cost of his wife. Sacrificing everything for survival and familial continuity was the only way of life he knew, making any criticism of his traditional mindset seem out of place. In contrast, Lee Seung-gi&#39;s character, Moon-seok, embodies a different era. A university student in the late &#39;80s, he likely aspired to be a virtuous and dedicated doctor under the influence of his father. However, upon seeing his late mother&#39;s modest portrait, he appears to have renounced worldly attachments, realizing the futility of material success. The father and son, though different, are deeply connected, influencing each other profoundly. Director Yang cleverly rebinds their severed worldly ties in the most human way possible-through unexpected familial connections. Yet the film isn&#39;t merely a comedic exploration of family bonds dictated by DNA. Instead, it compels the audience to reflect on the value of relationships and the ultimate meaning of family. While Kim Yun-seok and Lee Seung-gi&#39;s performances anchor the film, the supporting roles played by Kim Sung-ryoung and Park Soo-young bring vitality to the narrative. &#39;About Family&#39; is a fitting movie for families to enjoy together. - PJH.
