A new Hulu limited series based on the Murdaugh Murders case is confirmed to be in development. The show is set to follow the famous Murdaugh family from the Lowcountry region of South Carolina. For all the familys great legal and political influence, they were accused of being involved in a number of crimes that ranged from fraud to murder, all which came to a head when the fourth-generation son, Alex, murdered his wife Maggie and his son Paul, using multiple guns.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, a new crime thriller series about the Murdaugh family has been greenlit at Hulu and Academy Award winner Patricia Arquette has already been confirmed to star in the lead role in the limited series. The show was initially reported to be in development a couple of years ago, but with the confirmation of Arquettes casting, it has now officially been ordered to series.

After getting a taste of prestige true crime television with “The Act” and “Escape at Dannemora,” Patricia Arquette has set her next miniseries event at Hulu.
The streamer gave a limited series order to an “untitled Murdaugh murders” project on Friday. The show is “based on Maggie and Alex Murdaugh’s stranger-than-fiction family drama, a riveting account drawing from countless hours of reporting by Mandy Matney – journalist and creator of the popular ‘Murdaugh Murders Podcast’ – as well as exclusive, insider knowledge from years spent following the case,” per the official description.
In June 2021, Maggie and her 22-year-old son Paul were found murdered on their family’s South Carolina property. In a twist, it was discovered that patriarch Alex, who called in their dead bodies, was actually found guilty of the crime. Additionally, more murders have since been linked to the Murdaughs.

The numbers are in and Beckham and Squid Game: The Challenge have topped the charts in terms of Netflix viewership when it comes to non-scripted titles.
The two series, a docuseries and reality competition, were the seventh and 15th most-watched non-scripted shows to debut in the second half of 2023, respectively.
But as Netflix continues to delve into the docuseries genre and ramp up its reality offerings, how do these shows compare to top shows from its previous data dump, in particular Love Is Blind.
Firstly, it’s complicated.
Beckham, which told the story of the former Manchester United legend’s career, debuted in October and scored 43.9M views. This was as a result of only being four parts.
Squid Game: The Challenge, the reality series based on the dystopian scripted series, secured 271M views across the period after its launch at the end of November. But that series, which was...

Welcome to another look back at the biggest hits of 2023. Today, we’ll look through the documentaries and docu-series that picked up the most points in the Netflix top 10s throughout the year.
This list is compiled with data from FlixPatrol, which tracks the daily top 10s in over 90 countries globally. Their data provides a daily snapshot of what’s trending in the TV and movie list by providing points to each title that features. Although we love their data, it’s neither perfect nor an exact measurement of viewership. Netflix does provide its own data on this front, but it doesn’t allow us to paint a big picture of what was watched most in 2023 as it stands.
Because documentaries feature in the movie lists and docu-series feature in the TV list, we’ll split them separately. We’ll have a look at the documentaries and docu-series to do best globally first,...

Usually, when you hear about a Netflix release topping the charts it's either yet another example of how Netflix viewers will watch anything or the surprising resurgence of a long-forgotten film. But sometimes, the streamer serves up a true crime documentary so salacious we can't help but binge away until we've imbibed the entire harrowing narrative in one. Such was the case recently with "Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal," which had viewers around the world tuning in.
Since it gave up on the movie-by-mail model and became a streaming service, Netflix has consistently provided us with a stream of true crime documentaries that delve into all manner of sordid affairs. From "Making a Murderer" to "The Staircase," other people's trauma has proven a reliably popular genre for Netflix, which has capitalized as much as anyone on our ongoing love affair with true crime.

Rifkin is the Hollywood vet who ran Wma for years and was producing partner with Bruce Willis after that, and who will move Incite into scripted fare next year.
Incite’s aim is to finance and produce premium non-fiction fare, and they have started out with a bang. Fighting for streaming residuals has been a hard-fought sticking point for the writers and actors negotiations, but bottom-line results of the new bonus threshold may be limited.
Less than 5 percent of Netflix originals in 2022 “would have triggered performance bonuses under the new contract between the Writers Guild of America and major studios,” Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw wrote on Sunday. The new deal between the WGA and the AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers) pays out performance bonuses if at least 20 percent of a streaming platform’s U.S. users consume a new original film or TV series within its first 90 days.
Shaw’s rate of 5 percent or less accounts for all Netflix original titles, he wrote — including foreign-language, animated, and unscripted programs that aren’t governed by the WGA deal. So while, say, docuseries “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal” crosses the threshold with a 30 percent share of U.

Alex Murdaugh admitted to being addicted to opioids during his trial, using it as a defense for his erratic behavior following the deaths of his wife and son. However, he was found guilty and sentenced to two consecutive life sentences without parole.
Since the trial of Alex Murdaugh began, a massive amount of fascination has been built around both the disgraced lawyer and his powerful family, and this cultural obsession eventually led to the production of the documentary series, Low Country: The Murdaugh Dynasty. In the Alex Murdaugh trial, the patriarch of the South Carolina lawyer family was accused of murdering his wife, Maggie, and his son, Paul in 2021. It was a highly publicized case that received a lot of mainstream attention, particularly in South Carolina, and so Low Country: The Murdaugh Dynasty tries to capture all aspects of this sensational event throughout its three episodes.

At times it feels like if a news story breaks on Friday, Lifetime is there on Monday with an original movie at the ready. The speed of this brand that’s been around since 1984 isn’t just surprising to fans and reporters in the TV space.
“We surprise ourselves sometimes,” senior vice president of scripted programming Tia Maggini told TheWrap.
One of those surprising turnarounds happened around “Murdaugh Murders: The Movie,” a two-part project that makes history on Saturday for being the 500th original movie to air on the network.
According to Maggini, the team at Lifetime had been following the story of the Murdaugh family murders from the beginning. Though the “crazy” story captured their attention, the team was hesitant to move forward “legally” until the had a more definite idea of who committed the murders. But once Alex Murdaugh was arrested, the team went to work “towards the top of this year.

David Beckham scored a goal with his latest Netflix docuseries.
Beckham took the top spot among the streamer’s English-language series in its debut week, securing 12.4M views.
That means that Sex Education Season 4 was knocked down a peg, but it still managed to hold onto No. 2 with 6.6M views — which is quite a drop from the 13.4M views it secured the week prior. It must have been a slow week for streaming though, because that was nearly twice the amount of views as Love Is Blind Season 5, which came in at No. 3 with 3.7M.
One Piece remains on the list for its sixth week in a row at No. 4, this time taking home an additional 2.5M views. Season 5 of Virgin River logged its fifth week on the list, taking sixth place with 2M views.

One of the biggest game-changers in the growth of streaming has been the influx of Hollywood talent to the small screen. This happens in the form of original prestige TV series, direct-to-streaming feature length films, and recent theatrical releases moving to SVOD and AVOD platforms. These kinds of programs regularly top the streaming chart on the Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report, and the week of September 25 to October 1 is a great case study.
“Reptile,” a feature-length detective thriller starring and co-written by Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro, tops the chart this week. The movie, which also stars Justin Timberlake and Alicia Silverstone, was seen by 1.4 million households in just three days since its release on Sept. 29. Hispanic households drove that weekend viewership, as the demo over-indexed by 18%.

Rebecca Hill's daughter was almost selected as a juror in Alex Murdaugh's trial but was ultimately passed on. Curtis Smith, known as Cousin Eddie, claims that Alex Murdaugh confessed the murders to him, stating that Alex wanted to be shot because he believed he would be implicated in the deaths of Maggie and Paul. Alex Murdaugh's alibi, Shelly Smith, disproved his claims during the trial, testifying that he spent less time at his parents' house on the night of the murders than he had initially stated.

Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal, Netflix‘s docuseries about the crimes of South Carolina aristocratic lawyer Alex Murdaugh, is often a frustrating experience. By insisting upon jumping right into the details of this very current case before the proverbial bodies are even cold, Murdaugh Murders falls well short of the definitive standard viewers look for in a true crime documentary.
Season 1 of the series, which premiered in February of this year, did a solid enough job of capturing the context of what made this Murdaugh story so fascinating. We delved into those particular details over here but here’s a Tl;Dr all the same. The Murdaughs are a dynastic political family from the low country of South Carolina. On Feb. 23, 2019, powerful lawyer Alex Murdaugh’s teenage Paul made news by accidentally killing one of his friends while operating a boat under the influence of alcohol. Netflix sure owes a lot to horrific crimes being committed. The streaming service has had massive hits with such true crime documentaries as the truly harrowing "American Murder: The Family Next Door," "The Staircase," and the original Netflix crime doc phenomenon "Making a Murderer." The list of Netflix true crime documentaries is seemingly endless, and it's only growing year after year as our obsession with real-life acts of shocking barbarity shows no signs of abating.
Earlier this year the cinematic true crime series "Missing: Dead or Alive?" found its way into the Netflix Top 10. But that wasn't the first true crime hit for Netflix this year. That honor belongs to "Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal." Across three episodes, the series laid out the events surrounding the downfall of prominent South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh, who in 2023 was convicted of murdering his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul. The Murdaugh family's history is filled with power and influence in the South Carolina legal system, which has led to a web of alleged crimes. The family dynasty can be traced back to Randolph Murdaugh Sr., who founded his own law firm and later became the District Attorney. Alex Murdaugh, despite not holding a District Attorney position, still had significant power due to his work at the family law firm. He was ultimately found guilty of murdering his wife and son.

On June 7, 2021, a tragic incident took place in the infamous Murdaugh family, who have gained notoriety for their murder scandals. One of South Carolina’s most disturbing and bone-chilling murder mysteries is the Murdaugh murder case. Paul Murdaugh and his mother, Maggie, were murdered at the Murdaugh residence at 4147 Mossel Road in Islandton on this date. The first person to find the body was Paul’s father and Maggie’s husband, Alex Murdaugh, and it was he who reported it to the police. However, he became a suspect in the murder case, as there were some flaws in his alibi, and he possessed the same weapon that was used in the murder, which deepened the mystery surrounding the case. Netflix released the first season of Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal, which delved deeper into the boat wreck accident resulting in Mallory Beach’s death, and the subsequent tragedy that claimed...

Islandton, South Carolina, where the Murdaugh murders took place, is an unincorporated community with only 49 residents as of 2020. The Murdaugh family was already well-known in the area due to their wealth and influence in the legal and political spheres. The Murdaugh murders have become one of the most high-profile cases in South Carolina's history, attracting national media coverage and comparisons to other notorious criminal cases.
Although the double homicide dubbed the Murdaugh murders is covered in Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal, many people are unfamiliar with Islandton, South Carolina, the location of these killings. In June 2021, Alex Murdaugh called 911 to report the shooting of his wife and son, Maggie and Paul, at their hunting lodge in Islandton. This call set off a criminal investigation and trial that would become a media spectacle. Alex Murdaugh was found guilty of murdering his wife and son in a high-profile trial, as depicted in Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal season 2. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole. Murdaugh's conviction was based on circumstantial evidence, including a video on his son's phone that proved he lied about his whereabouts. He continues to deny his involvement and is seeking a new trial.
Netflix's Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal tells the true story of a tragic boating accident on February 24, 2019, and the consequential murders of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh on June 7, 2021. As the series reveals, Maggie's husband and Paul's father, Alex Murdaugh, was arrested for the crimes more than a year after they occurred, and his trial took place in early 2023. The first season of the show mainly focused on the boating accident that resulted in the death of Mallory Beach, while the second season revolved around Alex Murdaugh's trial.

“Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal” is back. Three new episodes of the Netflix docuseries dropped on Wednesday, providing a closer look at the days leading up to the 2021 murder of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh, and what happened between those deaths and Alex Murdaugh’s conviction in March 2023.
While the first season, which premiered on Feb. 22, led up to the trial, Michael Gasparro and Julia Willoughby Nason, the docuseries’ director/executive producers, knew there was more story to tell.
“We kind of had a lot in the wings ready to go, and a lot of unfinished business essentially that we were really excited to dive back into,” Willoughby Nason says. “When I saw the witnesses on the stand during that six-week trial, I wanted to interview them. I wanted to see what they really wanted to say. So we won’t run a rehash anything, but we wanted to go more...

Serving as welcomed additions to the August 2nd event, these developments will further bolster an already stacked lineup that will feature keynote and panel discussions led by journalists, documentary filmmakers and cultural trendsetters, whose sole purpose is to spread the gospel of authenticity while bringing truth to light in the stories they tell.

Gruesome tales of grisly murder. Horror stories of kids in cults. False confessions and authentic admissions.
True crime has taken over the documentary space, proving a reliable audience attractor for streaming platforms, network and cable channels. While it’s the most popular genre within nonfiction programming broadly speaking, whether that will translate to success with Emmy voters remains an open question. One thing’s for certain: there’s no lack of contenders — twisted tales dripping with blood.
Netflix leads the way with multiple suitors, among them Conversations with a Killer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes, the grim story of one of America’s most notorious serial killers, built largely around recorded interviews between Dahmer and one of his young defense attorneys in the early 1990s. It’s directed and executive produced by Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning filmmaker Joe Berlinger, one of the leading figures in documentary.

The creative forces behind four of the documentary films and shows that are hoping to compete at this year’s Emmys took some time to chat with Gold Derby and discussed several topics including their favorite documentaries, surprising subjects covered by docs and the changing nature of what documentaries can be. This was part of Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts panel on TV Documentaries that included Ellen Goosenberg Kent (“Afghan Dreamers”), Michael Gasparro (“Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal”), Zach Heinzerling (“Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence”) and Jimmy Chin (“Wild Life”).
You can watch the TV documentary group panel above with the people behind these four programs. Click on each person’s name above to be taken to each exclusive interview.
Gasparro sighted classic documentary films like “The Thin Blue Line” as his entry point into the genre but also cited one that was a milestone for documentary series.

Trying to get people on camera to talk about the titular family for “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal,” was a tough thing to accomplish for executive producer Michael Gasparro. “It was terribly difficult to get people. This is a small community. We had a really hard time talking to people. It’s Hampton, South Carolina. They were scared and I think that people are still scared,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent Meet the Experts panel on TV Documentaries (watch the exclusive video interview above).
But fear about the family wasn’t the only reason the crew had a hard time talking to people. “There’s also multiple documentaries, so it was very competitive and it was an ongoing story, which is also really difficult since you’re not taking a story from the past and telling it today.”
