A new Hulu limited series based on the Murdaugh Murders case is confirmed to be in development. The show is set to follow the famous Murdaugh family from the Lowcountry region of South Carolina. For all the familys great legal and political influence, they were accused of being involved in a number of crimes that ranged from fraud to murder, all which came to a head when the fourth-generation son, Alex, murdered his wife Maggie and his son Paul, using multiple guns.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a new crime thriller series about the Murdaugh family has been greenlit at Hulu and Academy Award winner Patricia Arquette has already been confirmed to star in the lead role in the limited series. The show was initially reported to be in development a couple of years ago, but with the confirmation of Arquettes casting, it has now officially been ordered to series.

After getting a taste of prestige true crime television with “The Act” and “Escape at Dannemora,” Patricia Arquette has set her next miniseries event at Hulu.

The streamer gave a limited series order to an “untitled Murdaugh murders” project on Friday. The show is “based on Maggie and Alex Murdaugh’s stranger-than-fiction family drama, a riveting account drawing from countless hours of reporting by Mandy Matney – journalist and creator of the popular ‘Murdaugh Murders Podcast’ – as well as exclusive, insider knowledge from years spent following the case,” per the official description.

In June 2021, Maggie and her 22-year-old son Paul were found murdered on their family’s South Carolina property. In a twist, it was discovered that patriarch Alex, who called in their dead bodies, was actually found guilty of the crime. Additionally, more murders have since been linked to the Murdaughs.

The numbers are in and Beckham and Squid Game: The Challenge have topped the charts in terms of Netflix viewership when it comes to non-scripted titles.

The two series, a docuseries and reality competition, were the seventh and 15th most-watched non-scripted shows to debut in the second half of 2023, respectively.

But as Netflix continues to delve into the docuseries genre and ramp up its reality offerings, how do these shows compare to top shows from its previous data dump, in particular Love Is Blind.

Fighting for streaming residuals has been a hard-fought sticking point for the writers and actors negotiations, but bottom-line results of the new bonus threshold may be limited.

Less than 5 percent of Netflix originals in 2022 “would have triggered performance bonuses under the new contract between the Writers Guild of America and major studios,” Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw wrote on Sunday. The new deal between the WGA and the AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers) pays out performance bonuses if at least 20 percent of a streaming platform’s U.S. users consume a new original film or TV series within its first 90 days.

Shaw’s rate of 5 percent or less accounts for all Netflix original titles, he wrote — including foreign-language, animated, and unscripted programs that aren’t governed by the WGA deal. So while, say, docuseries “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal” crosses the threshold with a 30 percent share of U.

With the release of its second wave of Season 5 episodes, Netflix’s Love Is Blind surged eight spaces to top Nielsen’s latest U.S. ranking of streaming originals.

For the week of Sept. 25, Love Is Blind racked up 943 million minutes viewed across 66 available episodes. It was followed by Netflix’s Sex Education (734 million minutes viewed/32 episodes), last week’s champ Virgin River (709 million minutes/52 episodes), Disney+’s Ahsoka (572 million minutes/seven available episodes) and Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building (505 million minutes/29 available episodes).

Netflix’s Virgin River held steady at No. 1 on Nielsen’s latest U.S. ranking of streaming originals, by amassing 1.24 billion minutes viewed across 52 total episodes during the week of Sept. 18.

With the release of the first half of its farewell run, Netflix’s Sex Education placed a distant second, with 634 million minutes viewed across 32 episodes. It was followed by Disney+’s yet-to-be-renewed Ahsoka (rising one spot with 570 million minutes/six available episodes), Netflix’s Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal (563 million minutes/six episodes) and Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time (531 million minutes/14 available episodes).

At times it feels like if a news story breaks on Friday, Lifetime is there on Monday with an original movie at the ready. The speed of this brand that’s been around since 1984 isn’t just surprising to fans and reporters in the TV space.

“We surprise ourselves sometimes,” senior vice president of scripted programming Tia Maggini told TheWrap.

One of those surprising turnarounds happened around “Murdaugh Murders: The Movie,” a two-part project that makes history on Saturday for being the 500th original movie to air on the network.

According to Maggini, the team at Lifetime had been following the story of the Murdaugh family murders from the beginning. Though the “crazy” story captured their attention, the team was hesitant to move forward “legally” until the had a more definite idea of who committed the murders. But once Alex Murdaugh was arrested, the team went to work “towards the top of this year.

Netflix has added Sahara Bushue to its unscripted team, TheWrap can confirm.

Bushue had been consulting for the streaming giant since March. She will now join the company on a permanent basis on unscripted VP Brandon Riegg’s team. Her official title will be director of unscripted series.

Previously, Bushue worked as the senior vice president and head of unscripted for Westbrook Studios, the entertainment venture company founded by Will and Jada Pinkett Smith. She was there for a little over two years when the company produced projects such as “Red Table Talk,” “Welcome to Earth,” “Amend: The Fight for America” and “Women of the Movement.”

Before that, Bushue was the senior vice president for alternative programming and development at NBC. Altogether, she was at the network for 13 years. Throughout her time at NBC, she’s worked on “America’s Got Talent,” “Ellen’s Game of Games,” “World of Dance,” “Little Big Shots” and “Hollywood Game Night.

Beckham took the top spot among the streamer’s English-language series in its debut week, securing 12.4M views.

That means that Sex Education Season 4 was knocked down a peg, but it still managed to hold onto No. 2 with 6.6M views — which is quite a drop from the 13.4M views it secured the week prior. It must have been a slow week for streaming though, because that was nearly twice the amount of views as Love Is Blind Season 5, which came in at No. 3 with 3.7M.

One Piece remains on the list for its sixth week in a row at No. 4, this time taking home an additional 2.5M views. Season 5 of Virgin River logged its fifth week on the list, taking sixth place with 2M views.

“Beckham” is leading Netflix’s Top 10 English language TV list after a clip from the docuseries went viral over the weekend.

The aforementioned clip shows David Beckham questioning his wife, Victoria Beckham, over her claims she grew up working class. Not only has the clip made a sizable impression on social media, but it seems as though the show it’s from has been popular as well. The docuseries topped Netflix’s English language list with 12.4 million views during its first week.

The four-episode limited series was then followed by Season 4 of “Sex Education,” which accounted for 6.6 million views, and Season 5 of “Love Is Blind,” which brought in 3.7 million views. “One Piece” also appeared on the list for its sixth week in a row, nabbing the fourth spot as well as 2.5 million views.

One of the biggest game-changers in the growth of streaming has been the influx of Hollywood talent to the small screen. This happens in the form of original prestige TV series, direct-to-streaming feature length films, and recent theatrical releases moving to SVOD and AVOD platforms. These kinds of programs regularly top the streaming chart on the Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report, and the week of September 25 to October 1 is a great case study.

“Reptile,” a feature-length detective thriller starring and co-written by Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro, tops the chart this week. The movie, which also stars Justin Timberlake and Alicia Silverstone, was seen by 1.4 million households in just three days since its release on Sept. 29. Hispanic households drove that weekend viewership, as the demo over-indexed by 18%.

The film fell just behind Spanish dystopian thriller, “Nowhere” which snagged 23.4 million views.

On the TV side, “Sex Education” Season 4 continued to lead the list with 13.4 million views, while Season 1 took ninth place with 1.9 million views. Directed by Jenner Furst and Julia Willoughby Nason, Season 1 of Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal takes on one of the most sensational murder cases in recent years, one that saw prominent South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh accused in the shocking deaths of his wife and son. True crime has taken over the documentary space, proving a reliable audience attractor for streaming platforms, network and cable channels. While it’s the most popular genre within nonfiction programming broadly speaking, whether that will translate to success with Emmy voters remains an open question. The creative forces behind four of the documentary films and shows that are hoping to compete at this year’s Emmys took some time to chat with Gold Derby and discussed several topics including their favorite documentaries, surprising subjects covered by docs and the changing nature of what documentaries can be. This was part of Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts panel on TV Documentaries that included Ellen Goosenberg Kent (“Afghan Dreamers”), Michael Gasparro (“Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal”), Zach Heinzerling (“Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence”) and Jimmy Chin (“Wild Life”).

Gasparro sighted classic documentary films like “The Thin Blue Line” as his entry point into the genre but also cited one that was a milestone for documentary series.

Trying to get people on camera to talk about the titular family for “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal,” was a tough thing to accomplish for executive producer Michael Gasparro. “It was terribly difficult to get people. This is a small community. We had a really hard time talking to people. It’s Hampton, South Carolina. They were scared and I think that people are still scared,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent Meet the Experts panel on TV Documentaries (watch the exclusive video interview above).

But fear about the family wasn’t the only reason the crew had a hard time talking to people. “There’s also multiple documentaries, so it was very competitive and it was an ongoing story, which is also really difficult since you’re not taking a story from the past and telling it today.”
