Despite the fond reception for Pokémon Horizons: The Series, the latest anime in the franchise featuring two new protagonists, some fans miss the original main character, Ash Ketchum. Ash and his buddy Pikachu have been the central figures of the Pokémon anime since its debut in 1997 and remained so until the end of Pokémon Ultimate Journeys: The Series in 2023, when Ash finally became Champion.
Although the new series is available on Netflix, many seasons of the long-running Pokémon anime are scattered among several streaming services like Prime Video, Hulu, and Tubi. However, there is a way to watch the earliest adventures of Ash, Pikachu, Brock, and Misty in only one place for free.

As most people are aware, the Pokémon franchise ultimately made the decision to expand its universe in 2023 and give us a new series with new characters, called Pokémon Horizons: The Series. The show debuted on April 14, 2023, and is presently airing in Japan.
The decision came after following Ash Ketchum and Pikachu on their adventures for more than 20 years. Ash ultimately became the champion in the series and the producers decided that it was time to retire him and usher in a new path for the franchise, which resulted in a new anime.
As for the series, Netflix is in charge of the series’ international distribution rights, and U.S. fans know that they can stream the series on the platform. Currently, American fans are waiting for the final part of the show’s first season, which will be released on November 22, but we have also received confirmation about the show’s second season,...

Look, obviously the big news this November is the U.S. presidential election.
But for the moments when you want to look away from wall-to-wall coverage (or just stop doomscrolling), Netflix has plenty to keep you occupied. There’s new original Christmas movies like “Hot Frosty” and “The Merry Gentlemen,” as well as more “Outer Banks” for fans of that show created by Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke. Plus Oscar contenders like “Emilia Perez” are now streaming on the service. But all of that is just preamble to our No. 1 pick this month, because when Mike Schur has a new television show, it’s time to pay attention.
Top Pick: “A Man on the Inside”
Created by Schur and loosely based on the 2020 documentary “The Mole Agent,” the eight-episode comedy series will star Ted Danson, who volunteers to help a private detective by going undercover at a nursing...

Some Pokémon, like Rolycoly and Carkol, never made it into the anime despite appearing in games and later evolutions being shown. Barraskewda was only seen in a miniseries, making its appearance more limited compared to other Galar Pokémon. Porygon2 and Porygon-z faced a ban after a controversial episode, making it unlikely they'll ever appear in the anime.
The Pokémon anime starring Ash Ketchum ran for a whopping 1,232 episodes, and there are currently "only" 1,025 Pokémon in existence, so it seems like the anime could easily have included every species. Yet, despite the ample opportunities, there are still a surprising number of Pokémon who have slipped through the cracks, meaning Ash never had a chance to meet these species.
Many of the excluded Pokémon are from the eighth generation games, Sword and Shield, as well as Pokémon Legends Arceus, which may be a result of the changed formula seen in the anime during Pokémon Journeys.

Ludlow, also known by his secret identity, Mighty G, steps in to help Palafin battle Klawf, resembling All Might with his musclebound transformation and heroic actions. The episode pays homage to My Hero Academia and Superman, leaving fans wondering if Mighty G's transformation will return in future episodes.
Pokémon Horizons surprised fans this week with its superhero-focused episode, which contained a fairly obvious reference to the My Hero Academia franchise's most popular hero, All Might. Pokémon Horizons showcases a luxury experience inside a Poké Ball, with a Quaxly relaxing on a couch and enjoying a drink in a stemmed glass. Luxury Balls in the games provide nicer conditions for captured Pokémon, making them more friendly towards trainers. While the scene in the episode may not be taken seriously, fans now have an idea of what the interior of a Poké Ball could be like, sparking ongoing debate and imagination.
There's one question that often lingers in the back of a Pokémon fan's mind ever since the series started over 25 years ago: What's it like inside a Poké Ball? Pokémon Horizons has offered one answer to that question, and as it turns out, it's not half bad.

Alain was introduced as a protagonist in the Pokemon Xy era, quickly becoming a more interesting character than Ash. Alain's journey involves battling Mega Evolution users and working with Lysandre, giving him a personal connection to the plot. The rivalry between Ash and Alain leads to a crucial clash in the Kalos League, fulfilling Alain's growth.
Long before Pokémon Horizons, Pokémon toyed with the idea of a protagonist other than Ash, during the Xy era of the anime. This protagonist was Alain, the star of the Mega Evolution specials who would later cross paths with Ash and join the main anime. Episode #38 of Pokémon Horizons reveals what happens when the paired Pokémon Tandemaus is separated. If the little ones were to disappear, the adults would revert to being Tandemaus. Pokémon Horizons showcases the unusual evolution and existence of group Pokémon like Tandemaus and Maushold, highlighting the confusion and questions surrounding these types of Pokémon species.

Money becomes a regular part of the show in Pokémon Horizons, with the airship crew taking on jobs to pay for maintenance. The Rising Volt Tacklers, like the crew of Bebop, often choose morality over money, leading to lack of payment for their services. While kids like Ash don't worry about money, adult characters in Pokémon Horizons understand the importance of funding their adventuring lifestyle.
In the world of the Pokémon anime, it was pretty uncommon to bring up the idea of money at all; Ash never had to worry about paying for much of anything. That hasn't been the case in Pokémon Horizons, where funding for the airship has begun to play a bigger role, in much the same way as another anime classic: Cowboy Bebop.

Streaming the entire Pokémon anime series is challenging due to rights and licensing issues, with portions available on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and Pokémon TV. Netflix is the home for new Pokémon episodes and also offers the original series, recent seasons, a special miniseries, and two movies. Hulu hosts the sixth generation series Pokémon Xy and its related parts, but important specials are missing. Amazon Prime has a mix of seasons available for free or purchase, and Pokémon TV offers free streaming with no ads and rotating series.

The Pokémon anime effectively conveys ideas and tells stories through nonverbal communication, utilizing the characters' designs, body language, and expressive faces. The "Pikachu" shorts and episodes focusing on Pokémon without humans demonstrate the anime's ability to create compelling scenes without dialogue, relying on music and emotions to convey the intended tone. The Pokémon's expressive nature and unique ways of saying their names help enhance the storytelling in the anime, making it a master of storytelling without dialogue.
One of the Pokémon anime's most impressive features has also at times been one of its most maligned: episodes focusing heavily on Pokémon, with little dialog from human characters. Since Pokémon can only say their own names, they're fairly limited in what they can convey through speech, and it's all the other ways that the anime gets ideas across using Pokémon that are truly impressive.

Pikachu's voice actress, Ikue Ohtani, was honored in a Pokémon Xy episode with a cameo appearance as a character who resembles her and dubs over Pikachu's footage. In the Japanese version of the episode, the character voiced by Ohtani speaks in Japanese, further connecting her to Pikachu's voice. This connection is not present in the English dub. Ohtani is one of the few main cast Pokémon voice actors from the original series to transfer over to Pokémon Horizons, where she now voices Captain Pikachu. Her inclusion in the anime is a tribute to her contributions to the Pokémon franchise.
Pikachu is one of the most iconic elements of the Pokémon anime, and that's largely thanks to his voice actress, Ikue Ohtani, who helped to breathe life into the likable electric mouse over the last 25 years. The series actually honored Ms. Ohtani in one episode, giving a rare nod to...
