Exclusive: Paris-based sales and production genre specialist WTFilms has boarded a revival of New Zealand 2006 cult classic horror-comedy Black Sheep, about a flock of sheep transformed into bloodthirsty predators by genetic engineering.

The sequel, entitled Black Sheep 2, reunites key members of the team involved in the original film, which was New Zealand’s most successful horror movie ever.

Original writer–director Jonathan King will direct the sequel, from a story he wrote with Matthew Grainger and Rosie Howells.

Lead actor Nathan Meister returns to the role of Henry Oldfield, the sheep-phobic son of a farmer who discovers his twisted older brother has been carrying out dangerous genetic experiences on his livestock, which transform them from docile vegetarians to ruthless, carnivorous killers.

Horror cinema has undergone a significant transformation in 2024, offering a dynamic range of films that appeal to both die-hard fans and casual viewers alike. Its that spooky time of year and Shudder is here with the return of the VHS franchise, V/H/S/Beyond, the seventh installment featuring six new bloodcurdling tapes, placing horror at the forefront of a sci-fi-inspired hellscape.

Directed by Jay Cheel, Jordan Downey, Christian Long & Justin Long, Justin Martinez, Virat Pal, Kate Siegel, the film airs Friday, October 4.

The movie is sitting at 90% over on Rotten Tomatoes and had its world premiere at this year’s Fantastic Fest. In their coverage, Fangoria said the segments, “knocked it out of the park on this one.”

Horror fans, we're eatin' good (with our eyes). It's been a splendid 2024 already, and we're not even at the Halloween rush yet. Indie darlings like Shudder's "Exhuma" or "Infested" have stunned the platform's subscribers, Neon mesmerized theatergoers with "Immaculate" and "Longlegs," and studio releases like "The First Omen" or "Alien: Romulus" brought the thunder. Can we not bother with the obligatory "Horror's back, baby!" articles this October? Horror never left, horror's always en vogue, and horror's been having one heck of a year.

Like I said, Halloween still two months away. We're still staring at a whole dang slate of spooky season releases on the horizon. With titles like "Speak No Evil" or "Terrifier 3" patiently waiting, the best horror watches this year might still be on the way. Even better, we've seen some of those releases yet to come and can confirm that 2024 still has some tricks up its sleeve.

Sam Raimi's iconic horror franchise Evil Dead is still going strong after all this time. Most recently, fans were treated to last year's fantastically fun Evil Dead Rise, but there's still plenty more on the way, including at least two more live-action movies.

But franchise star Bruce Campbell, who originated the role of Ash in the 1981 film and has reprised the role many times since in different capacities, recently provided Entertainment Weekly with an update on the franchise's future, including confirming that the long-gestating animated series is still in the works.

While it's unlikely we'll see Campbell return as Ash in a significant live-action role, the actor did say he'd happily voice the character for an animated spinoff.

We are developing an animated version, like a series. I'll do that. I'll do Ash's voice all day long, because my voice hasn't aged as much as I have.

The only award season that matters is here! Joking (kind of), but seriously, Fangoria just released the complete list of nominees for the 2024 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards. Considering how often horror gets shut out of the mainstream award shows, it's nice to have at least one thing we can rely on year after year.

Last year's Chainsaw Awards included big wins for movies like The Black Phone, Terrifier 2, and Prey. This time, the categories are again stacked, with films like Abigail, Evil Dead Rise, The First Omen, Talk To Me, Late Night with the Devil, and many more going head to head.

Specific performances are also being highlighted, like Tobin Bell in Saw X and Kathryn Newton for both Lisa Frankenstein and Abigail. It's been a fantastic few years for horror, and it'll be exciting to see which movies pull ahead this time around.

In A Violent Nature, an undead murderous monster’s slow striding through the woods, has generated IFC Films’ second-best opening ever since its indie horror hit Late Night With The Devil in March.

The artsy slasher written and directed by Chris Nash will see an estimated weekend gross of $2.1 million on 1,426 screens, IFC’s widest opening ever, and a no. 8 spot at the domestic box office.

Late Night, by Cameron and Colin Cairnes, which opened to $2.8 million at 1,034 locations, is pushing $10 million. It returns to theaters June 6 and runs through the weekend on about 500 screens.

In A Violent Nature “has been steadily making waves for redefining the classic slasher genre” since its Sundance premiere, said Scott Shooman, head of AMC Networks Film Group, calling Nash’s feature debut “a film that will have a lasting impact in the horror space.”

After kicking off May with discussions of Stephen Sommers’ The Mummy (listen), Trace and I have checked out Audrey Hepburn in Wait Until Dark (listen) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Gregg Araki‘s Mysterious Skin (listen).

Now we’re crossing a classic title off our list: Ridley Scott‘s Alien.

Alien tells the story of the crew of the Nostromo as they’re awoken from stasis to answer a distress beacon on a nearby planet. When Kane (John Hurt) is attacked on an alien ship, Warrant Officer Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) refuses to let Captain Dallas (Tom Skerritt) and Navigator Lambert (Veronica Cartwright) back on board with quarantining.

Science Officer Ash (Ian Holm) overrides her command and brings them inside, but as the alien creature on Kane’s face evolves, it becomes clear that there’s more than one antagonist on board the ship and everyone, including Engineers Parker...

Heart-wrenching horror.

After kicking off May with discussions of Stephen Sommers’ perfect action-adventure-horror-romantic-comedy The Mummy (listen) and the iconic jump scare in the Audrey Hepburn-starring Wait Until Dark (listen), we’re delving into the real-life horrors of child sexual abuse in Gregg Araki‘s 2004 adaptation of Scott Heim‘s novel Mysterious Skin.

Mysterious Skin tells the story of how child sexual abuse affects the lives of two pre-adolescent boys in different ways. Neil (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) becomes a reckless, sexually adventurous sex worker, while Brian (Brady Corbet) retreats into a reclusive fantasy of alien abduction. The film is told in parallel narratives before culminating in a heart-breaking reunion that will change each boy’s life forever.

The John Wick franchise producers at Thunder Road Pictures are partnering with longtime Screen Gems executive Scott Strauss to launch an independent genre label called Badlands, Deadline reports, and the first project to come our way from Badlands is the spider thriller Arachnid, which has Don’t Listen and El hombre del saco director Ángel Gómez Hernández attached to direct from a screenplay by Jayson Rothwell, whose previous credits include Silent Night (2012) and Polar. The film is set to star Matilda Lutz of the awesome 2017 revenge thriller Revenge and the upcoming Red Sonja reboot.

Badlands is backed by Andrew Schwartzberg and Jon Shiffman’s company Renegade Capital. According to Deadline, the label will “feature development and co-fi funds and plans to make two to three films per year.” Filming on Arachnid is set to begin in Madrid, Spain this July. After concluding April with discussions of Ciarán Foy’s Eli (listen) and David Cronenberg’s eXistenZ (listen), we kicked off May with a revisit of Stephen Sommers’ delightful 1999 film, The Mummy (listen).

Now we’re headed into the past with Terence Young‘s adaptation of Frederick Knott‘s “disabled woman in danger” play, Wait Until Dark (1967).

In the film, recently blind Susy (Audrey Hepburn) is menaced by a trio of strange men, including sexually perverse ring leader Roat (Alan Arkin), “nice guy” Talman (Richard Crenna) and portly Carlino (Jack Weston). The men are looking for a doll full of heroin, which is located somewhere in her apartment, but she doesn’t know where!

Can Susy figure out the scam with the help of upstairs neighbor girl Gloria (Julie Herrod) or will she wind up hanging in the closet like Roat’s poor accomplice Lisa (Samantha Jones)?

Cinematically speaking, spiders are having a miniature moment. On April 12, 2024, fans of creature features were treated to Kiah Roache-Turner's "Sting," a film about an alien spider that grows to an enormous size and terrorizes the denizens of a run-down apartment building. Then, on April 26, the United States was granted access to Sébastien Vanicek's "Infested" (French title: "Vermines"), a film about many spiders that grow to enormous sizes and terrorize the denizens of a run-down apartment building. These two films, of course, came hot on the heels of the February release of "Madame Web," the best Spider-Man-adjacent, non-Marvel-Cinematic-Universe-related mid-budget clairvoyance caper film ever made.

After concluding April with discussions of Ciarán Foy’s Eli (listen), a horror version of The Boy in the Plastic Bubble, and the pseudo-sequel to Videodrome in David Cronenberg’s eXistenZ (listen), we’re kicking off May with a revisit to one of our favorite years for cinema: 1999! The film we’ve selected is Stephen Sommer‘s action-adventure-horror-romantic-comedy The Mummy!

In the film, adventurer Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser) travels to Hamunaptra, the City of the Dead, with librarian Evelyn “Evy” Carnahan (Rachel Weisz) and her older brother Jonathan (John Hannah). While there, they accidentally awaken Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), a cursed high priest-turned-invincible mummy, and must stop him before he sacrifices Evy in an attempt to resurrect his former lover (Patricia Velásquez).

Arachnophobes are in for a bit of a rough time, because streaming platforms and cinemas will be positively crawling with spider-based monster movies before you know it. Well, two, anyway. First up is French spider-thriller Infested (out now on Shudder), with Australian creature feature Sting creeping into cinemas on May 31st.

Also known as Vermines, Infested is the feature debut of French director Sebastien Vanicek. Set in present-day Paris, the film centres on hustler Kaleb (Theo Christine), who shares a flat with his sister Manon (Lisa Nyarko) in a run-down apartment building that’s home to several other multicultural tenants.

Word recently broke that a new "Evil Dead" movie was on the way, with filmmaker Francis Galluppi ("The Last Stop in Yuma County") at the helm. This news came accompanied by the following statement from "Evil Dead' mastermind Sam Raimi: "Francis Galluppi is a storyteller who knows when to keep us waiting in simmering tension and when to hit us with explosive violence. He is a director that shows uncommon control in his feature debut."

The curious thing about this info is that earlier this year, we learned another "Evil Dead" movie was in the works, this one directed by Sébastien Vaniček, the filmmaker behind the killer spider movie "Infested." That's right: There are now two different "Evil Dead" movies on the way. And that, in my humble opinion, is a good thing! Director Sébastien Vaniček has been set to helm the next Evil Dead movie, and it’s easy to see why with his feature debut, the spider horror movie Infested. Playing like a cross between Attack the Block and Arachnophobia, Infested makes you care about its characters while delivering no shortage of skin-crawling spider horror moments.

Available now on Shudder, Infested follows Kaleb (Théo Christine), a lonely 30 year old who’s estranged from his best friend and at odds with his sister over their crumbling apartment. His dreams of opening a reptile zoo get drastically thwarted when he brings home an illegally acquired desert spider, one that happens to be gravid, and it gets loose. One hatched egg sac gives way to hundreds more, plunging the apartment building into a visceral arachnophobic nightmare.

It’s not easy taking a beloved horror franchise and making a new instalment that can fit into its timeline, honour the original and still be its own film. Many have tried, many have failed.

Lee Cronin hit the perfect balance with 2023’s Evil Dead Rise, which was a satisfyingly crunchy, gory sequel. We reported earlier this year that, thanks to the success of Cronin’s film, we would be getting a new spin-off set in the world of Evil Dead. Sébastien Vaniček, who directed the spider-horror Infested, will be directing this one.

Now, Deadline reports that there’s also another instalment in the works. Francis Galluppi is on directing duties for the still-unnamed film and will also pen the script, which will hopefully include a Deadite or two.

Streaming services are the bane of my existence. It’s 2024 and there are so many options that it makes my head spin. Netflix, Hulu, Disney Plus, Paramount Plus, Prime Video, Peacock cover the main streamers but that’s not counting the niches. Like old cartoons? Check out Boomerang. Like anime? Then Crunchyroll is for you. But what about horror fans? Sure, Hulu has its “Into the Dark” label and Netflix is always releasing something horror-related (though I question the quality.) And the horror genre features multiple options with Screambox, Arrow Player, Full Moon Features, and even Tubi. But the subject of today’s spotlight is the best of them all, with a great Ui and wonderful selection of films, nothing can compete with Shudder.

One of my favorite horror films of the year thus far, Infested pits an eclectic group of apartment tenants against rapidly reproducing spiders. As thought-provoking as it is palpably horrifying, Infested has now skittered onto Shudder, and I had the pleasure of catching up with director/co-writer Sébastien Vaniček in a video interview to discuss his new movie, including the spider-centric research that went into the making of the film's realistic effects, the movie's exploration of socioeconomic divisions, as well as the excellent performances from the cast, and Sébastien also shared his excitement for his upcoming Evil Dead movie!

"Evil Dead" fans had to wait a full decade between movies following the release of Fede Álvarez's 2013 entry in the long-running horror franchise. It seems the powers that be have no interest in making anyone wait that long again. To that end, we've learned that Francis Galluppi ("The Last Stop in Yuma County") has been tapped to write and direct a new movie set within the universe of Sam Raimi's original 1981 horror classic.

According to Deadline, Galluppi developed the idea and brought it to Raimi's team. They sparked to it and now it's officially in the works. No plot details have been revealed but it is described as an original story set within the "Evil Dead" universe. There's also no word yet on casting or anything like that -- meaning, it's unclear if any familiar characters will be included in this new installment. Rami had this to say...

It’s been a while since we’ve gotten a tried and true, serious-in-tone creature feature, or at least one in which the creature in question is a real-world animal and not a fictitious monster. This sub-genre often finds its roots planted firmly in horror comedy or, intentionally or not, camp. So it’s refreshing that Infested (formerly titled Vermin), Sébastien Vaniček‘s feature directorial debut, takes a deathly serious approach to the material. There’s still plenty of fun to be had with these spiders, but there’s nothing funny about them.

30-year-old Kaleb (Théo Christine) is a small-time grifter with a passion for small critters. His hopes of opening a reptile zoo with his friend Jordy (Finnegan Oldfield) were squashed years ago when an argument drove the two friends apart. Kaleb makes up for his lost dream by lining the walls of his room with vivariums filled with creepy-crawlies.

It was only a couple of weeks ago that Sting was pitting an oversized spider against the inhabitants of an NYC apartment building. Now we have Infested, which pits the inhabitants of a French housing project against a horde of arachnids. Arachnids that the prologue implies are both deadly and in demand.

One of the people that demand comes from is Kaleb. He’s a young man trying to make a living hustling sneakers and whatever else he can make a quick profit from. It’s not exactly a thriving business, and he’s stuck living with his sister Manon in the rundown apartment they inherited from their mother. Adding to his unhappiness is a falling out with his long time friend Jordy.

In an odd quirk of distribution timing, this month has seen the arrival of no less than two imported, semi-comedic thrillers featuring decrepit apartment building invaded by giant spiders. Already playing U.S. theaters is the Australian “Sting,” which is fun, if formulaic. In a whole other class, however, is French “Infested,” a first feature by director Sebastien Vanicek following several impressive shorts. An instant minor genre classic, it is fun and then some — a conceptually unremarkable but resourceful, energetic, stylish and good-humored creature feature with above-average human character interest.

That achievement has been duly noted: Intended as a streaming premiere, “Vermines” (the original title) pleased its producer such that he apparently insisted on a home-turf theatrical release, despite the long delay that imposes on its launch in other formats under French law. It’s seen big-screen release in numerous nations since late last year, though in the U.S.

Arachnophobia is a common fear, and there have been a few films made about killer spiders, but only one has screened at Venice. Sébastien Vanicek, director of Infested (aka Vermines), was as surprised as anyone when it happened, but he’s even more excited that his film is being released around the world. It’s a beautifully made film with strong characters and an intelligent subtext. It’s also his first feature, and he’s passionate about his craft – something which came across clearly when we met to discuss it.

For movies about killer spiders, the things that are generally of primary concern are the size and the volume of the spiders. With that in mind, connoisseurs of this horror subgenre should be pleased to find that Sébastien Vaniček’s feature-length debut, Infested, delivers on both of those fronts. While the spiders here, a highly poisonous and aggressive desert species, may initially emerge at a deceptively normal size, they gradually balloon to larger proportions as they overwhelm an apartment block in a French banlieue. Whoo-ee! I love me a scary spider movie. And like an intricate, hypnotically inviting web, no two spider movies are alike. There are funny spider movies. There are campy spider movies. There are metaphorical spider movies about the unraveling mind, and there are even spider movies so filled with little creepy crawlers that you walk around your house with a slipper in your hand for days after watching them. And what luck that we have Two scary spider movies in such short order, both entirely definitely breeds of hair-raising horror.

Sébastien Vaniček’s Infested, coming hot on the heels of Kiah Roche-Turner’s hilariously Sting, is the exact opposite of a comforting watch. It reminds you that spiders are t e r r i f y i n g, that they thrive (and hide) in every dark corner of this word, and that so many of them (too many of them!

We are now one full month into Spring 2024, which kicked off on Tuesday, March 19 and comes to an end with the start of Summer on Thursday, June 20. This year’s summer movie season has a whole bunch of exciting horror highlights, including A Quiet Place: Day One, MaXXXine, and Alien: Romulus, but let’s hold that particular thought until June rolls around.

Mardi Gras is long over, and Halloween is still months away. But over the next four days in New Orleans, Louisiana, the Overlook Film Festival will celebrate the strange and unusual with a salute to horror that couldn’t be timelier.

“As we are talking, we have just seen two brand-new horror releases — ‘Immaculate’ and ‘Late Night with the Devil’ — have the highest openings for those distributors in their histories,” festival co-director Landon Zakheim told IndieWire. [The nun nightmare, starring Sydney Sweeney, earned $5.3 million for Neon, while IFC’s supernatural talkshow took home $2.8 million, in their respective opening weekends.]

“On top of that, we’ve got the new ‘Godzilla,’ which was made by filmmakers who are alums of many festivals, including ours. And Disney is shepherding in an ‘Omen’ franchise film from a festival circuit filmmaker as well,” he said. “That’s all just if you look at the last couple of weeks.

No foolin' around today as Shudder announces their lineup for the month of April. Director Sébastien Vanicek’s debut feature Infested, a spider-filled French thriller that was formerly known as Vermin, won’t be released through the Shudder streaming service until April 26th, but it has already proved to be impressive enough to those who have already seen it (like Sam Raimi) that it landed Vanicek the job of directing the next Evil Dead movie. In anticipation of the Shudder release, a trailer for Infested has made its way online, and you can check it out in the embed above.

Shudder will be streaming the film in North America, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.

Well Go USA has revealed an official trailer for an insanely scary, unsettling horror movie called Sting, arriving in theaters this April. This Australian production comes from a filmmaker named Kiah Roache-Turner, and it looks as scary as any spider movie can. Sting spins a web of thrilling terror when 12-year-old Charlotte’s pet spider rapidly transforms into a giant flesh-eating monster, forcing the young girl to fight for her family's survival. The freaky little creature actually comes from outer space, an alien spider that befriends this little girl before it becomes an enormous killer. This stars Alyla Browne, Ryan Corr, Penelope Mitchell, Jermaine Fowler, Silvia Colloca, Danny Kim, Noni Hazlehurst, and Robyn Nevin. This isn't the only extremely scary spider movie this year - there's also a French horror called Vermin that apparently used real spiders while shooting.

Looking to replicate the success of last year's Evil Dead Rise (directed by Lee Cronin), franchise overseers Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert are hiring another filmmaker to head off in a different direction with a fresh spin-off. Up-and-coming director Sébastien Vaniček has been hired to make a new movie for Ghost House Pictures.

According to Deadline, the new film's story is being kept under wraps. And the spin-off nature means that this doesn't remove the possibility that Cronin will go on to make a Rise sequel (he has ideas for where it can lead), it simply represents Raimi and Tapert finding more talent to usher in other movies featuring those terrifying Deadites.

In the wake of last year’s box office hit Evil Dead Rise, the fifth installment in the Sam Raimi-created film franchise, another brand new Evil Dead movie is on the way soon!

Deadline reports today that Sébastien Vaniček has been hired by Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert’s Ghost House Pictures to direct an untitled Evil Dead spinoff movie.

“Details as to the film’s plot are under wraps,” Deadline notes.

Sébastien Vaniček made his feature debut with Infested (Vermines) just last year, and it’s clear that Raimi and company saw serious Evil Dead potential in the filmmaker. The new course for the Evil Dead franchise is for Raimi to hand select hot up-and-coming filmmakers to put their own spin on the Deadites, which has been working exceedingly well for the bloody saga.
