Hulu’s Light Shop is a far cry from Gangnam B-Side, and I’m overjoyed by the prospect. The dark mystery series takes a deep dive into the purgatory between life and death. In it, we’re often confused about who is human and who is a spirit because many humans are able to see and interact with the spirits. At the end of a terrifying alley is a light shop that is always open late at night. Its bright interior attracts anyone who passes through the alley to visit unprompted. In the first four episodes of the series, all released in one go, we meet a few characters who are afraid of this alleyway. By the end of the fourth episode, there is a major twist that leaves you shocked. Not only is this a big revelation going forward, but it also sheds new light, both figuratively and literally,...

I personally think the thriller genre is one of the hardest to deliver on. You’ve got to keep your audience at the edge of their seats while simultaneously keeping some suspense in what’s happening, creating a balance of excitement and a sort of dread for what’s coming next. A good thriller is able to balance these two things and give us something that concludes authentically, i.e., seems like a realistic outcome for the overwhelming odds the characters have faced since they started this troublesome journey. Turkish drama Asaf doesn’t find this balance, but it also doesn’t manage to deliver on either side of things because it’s too busy trying to be a melodrama. In all honesty, minus all the thriller stuff, Asaf may have been more interesting as a drama alone. This, of course, doesn’t mean there was a need to fully...

Disney+’s Gangnam B-Side banks on Ji Chang-Wook and Bibi’s popularity but fails to use it to its fullest potential. While Bibi’s character is long dead before the season finale and can only appear in flashback sequences, Ji Chang-Wook simply appears to do some blood-soaked action sequences and then disappears for most of the episodes. As a fan of the actor, I’m disappointed, because I can’t even say I watched the show just for him anymore. Last week I said the show was evocative of the “Burning Sun” incident in South Korea, but I think the show pivoted and became a bit more “apocalypse-y.” By this, I don’t mean there’s going to be zombies and earthquakes that’ll eradicate humans off of the face of the earth at some point, I just mean that for a moment it went into a “we’re doomed...

Watching episodes 5 and 6 of Gangnam B-Side made me realize that this show is strikingly reminiscent of the “Burning Sun” scandal. It was bound to happen sometime, and while there have been many shows on the same subject, this one feels directly inspired because of the involvement of an idol and a scandalous video. On the other hand, I wonder if the father-daughter trust bond is the new big trend of K-dramas because we just had Doubt, where the father didn’t trust his daughter and an entire series of unfortunate events followed. Now we can say the same thing about Detective Dong-Woo. The latest two episodes follow the idol’s suicide at the hospital, which definitely looks staged. Unfortunately, there’s very little of both Ji Chang-Woo and Bibi in this episode, and by the way things have panned out; we’re not going to get much of, or maybe any of Bibi moving forward.

K-drama Gangnam B-Side is only worth watching if you’re a fan of the actors on the show. The limited series doesn’t present any new ideas and gives us the same old “when rich people do drugs, you don’t know how far they can go” stories in the dullest way. The only reason I continue to watch the show is for Ji Chang-Woo and Bibi’s performances, which elevate the show. And also, I’d like to shout out Ha Yoon-Kyung as Prosecutor Min, the voice of reason on the show. In the first two episodes, we established that a celebrity named Noh Joon-Seo messed with Yoon Gil-Ho’s girl, which angered him. Trying to figure out what happened, Gil-Ho gets stuck in a loop between the corrupt police, a righteous cop, and a prosecutor who wants to create a better world. Episodes 3 and 4 have Gil-Ho, the prosecutor,...

Gangnam B-Side is a gritty Korean crime drama that shows the world of shadows, desperation, and moral ambiguity beneath the world’s most famous neighborhood in Seoul. The show takes Gangnam’s renowned nightlife as its setting and changes the area’s image from where rich and beautiful people hang out to where systemic corruption and human tragedy thrive.
Jo Woo-jin plays Kang Dong-woo, a detective with strong morals whose unshakable dedication to justice has repeatedly put him at odds with a deeply corrupt police system. After revealing widespread wrongdoing in his department, Dong-woo was sent to a rural posting. A series of strange disappearances of young club girls pulls him back into Gangnam’s criminal world.
He is joined in this complicated story by Ji Chang-wook’s character, Yoon Gil-ho, a dealer whose role as the woman he manages is torn between protecting and taking advantage of them. Strangely,...

Sometimes you really stop to wonder how a TV show with such incredible actors and a decent plot can end up being so drab. I know we’re only two episodes in and there’s a chance the show will get better with time, but in all honesty, I’m tired of these Gangnam-gangster drug-abuse plotlines that show us that criminals can be moral too. Yes, we know everything is circumstantial; move on and find something better to do, and you’re hearing all of this from a die-hard Ji Chang-Wook stan, so take everything I’m saying very seriously. But, having said that, because I’m such a big fan, I’m left hoping for something better to come after these first two formulaic episodes. Gangnam B-Side begins with the righteous Detective Dong-Woo proving that, despite being in a team full of corrupt cops, he’s the best of the crop,...
