When an experiment into a new source of natural fuel goes disastrously wrong, a rash of massive hurricanes rips across North America. A scientist, originally responsible for the design of the new power plant but who has walked away from the project, must get his family to safety before the hurricanes merge, creating a “hypercane” with the power to wipe America off the map.
A ridiculous plot, terrible CGI and a former Hollywood superstar slumming it with a bunch of B-list actors… Seems like a step back for mockbuster kings The Asylum if you ask me – especially when their recent films have see the company step up production values and storytelling to craft some great direct-to-market films.

For years, the old woman in the woods has secretly kept the wolves of the forest at bay. When the woman dies, the creatures suddenly attack the residents of a nearby town. As more people turn up dead, the townsfolk discover something far more sinister than wolves lurking in the woods and wage a bloody battle against the ruthless creatures. As the wolves begin to overrun the town, only the woman’s granddaughter holds the key to stopping the bloodbath before it’s too late…
Writer/director Jared Cohn has been carving out somewhat of a decent horror career in recent years, both in front and behind the camera.

Considering how insanely popular superheroes have been over the last few years, it's a little surprising that it's taken this long for someone to reboot The Toxic Avenger. For starters, the name alone should give it the same edge with confused consumers as mockbusters like Almighty Thor and Atlantic Rim, but unlike the quick cash-ins produced by The Asylum, it's a franchise with some genuine soul at its roots. First released back in 1984, The Toxic Avenger was an intentionally cheesy, sleazy comedy about a tormented janitor who has an accident with some barrels of toxic waste, turning him into a super mutant. Instead of using his newfound powers exclusively to smite his bullies, the hideous ghoul with a heart of gold decides to become a hero and starts cleaning up his...

Jared Cohn (Bound, Atlantic Rim, Born Bad, Buddy Hutchins) has been tapped to direct 6ix, a Nicholas Celozzi-written thriller that is being likened to David Fincher’s classic Se7en – being that it’s about a killer who is using The Book of Revelations for slaying inspiration… Check out the teaser/poster art below:
6ix sees a devout and merciless killer seeking to obtain the soul he believes he was born without by taking the “senses” of his victims. Two detectives are charged with the mission to save 6 innocent lives.

Making movies is hard. We should know – we write articles about them and we imagine actually making them is two, maybe three, times as hard (Ok, maybe a lot more).
There’s so many things to be dealing with, ranging from making sure catering are going to be able to provide a varied diet for the crew and that you have actors who can give the work the depth it requires. Of course, it’s very easy to take the easy route – make a product placement deal with Dominos that sees pizzas delivered to the set every day and hire Nicolas Cage.
The one place you’d imagine films wouldn’t skimp is in the creative department. The purpose of the whole enterprise is, after all, to make something entertaining for the audience. Except too often an overt focus on money takes over and a film simply steals entire swathes...

Birthday shoutouts go to Kevin Alejandro (above), who is 38, Russell Crowe is 50, John Oates is 65, and Jackie Chan is 60.
Our thoughts are with the family and generations of fans of screen legend Mickey Rooney, who died today at the age of 93. He’ll always be the one true Fallout Boy to me.
In more sad news, model and ally Peaches Geldof has died at the age of 25.
Supreme Court won’t hear anti-gay photographer case. Nom heads just exploded.
I Was Broken, and Matt Bomer Put Me Back Together. Is there anything he can’t do?
As I’m sure you’ll agree, The Asylum is one of the great production companies in Hollywood. They’re responsible for most of the iconic Syfy Channel movies, including Sharknado, Almighty Thor, Nazis At The Center Of The Earth, American Warships, Atlantic Rim, Titanic II, and of course, Mega Python vs. Gatoroid (to name just a few.

Bone Alone is a low budget movie 'inspired' by Home Alone. We've taken a look at what treats it has in store...
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Bone Alone and Home Alone.
Further Warning: Bone Alone is not an adult film.
Just a few short weeks ago, this site - along with a few others - received a letter from lawyers purportedly acting for 20th Century Fox, claiming that we'd infringed copyright by posting a what-had-been-debunked synopsis for the upcoming Fantastic Four movie.
At the time, I thought that its legal hounds had been a bit over the top. But then I was casually browsing through W H Smith (Halesowen branch) a week or two back, and I saw this...

Sharknado. A simple “portmanteau” – two words combined together to make one. The two words in this case were most likely “shark” and “tornado,” which make-up two of mother nature’s deadliest weapons in her arsenal of terrors, thrown together to spawn an idea for an incredibly creative original film. A film that could only be produced by The Asylum, of course. If you’re not familiar with the The Asylum, they’re the studio behind some of the most of the popular low-budget creature-features of recent times: 2-Headed Shark Attack, Mega Shark vs. Gatoroid and Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus… you’re beginning to see a pattern emerge, right?
But The Asylum doesn’t exclusively make movies using the formula “shark plus other thing equals arggggh!” Like any other studio, The Asylum has to make movies with mainstream appeal to finance their artsy, more personal films like Sharknado. And that...

Mockbuster kings The Asylum are currently basking in the slightly disingenuous ray of glory following Syfy’s premiere of Sharknado. The film was instantly picked up by bored celebrities on Twitter and started to ‘trend’ across the world, giving many people their first glimpse at the work of The Asylum.
Not ones to miss their celebrity-propelled moment articles in THR and Variety followed and the Burbank studio was suddenly under a playful, if as I said – slightly snarky, spotlight. A sequel was rushed into production (Shark Too-nami is my pick for the name) and it is fair to say that this is perhaps the studio’s golden hour.
While the stream of rip-offs (Atlantic Rim?) and low-budget, ultra-gory, mega-ridiculous features will continue The Asylum may never reach the heights scaled with Sharknado, yet they are here to stay and we decided to mock the mockers and create our own posters...

Sharknado is the latest water-cooler buzzword, trending tweet and potential drinking game all rolled into one, and Syfy isn’t resting on its laurels when it comes to their bad z-movie darling of the moment. Although the ratings for The Asylum produced movie a swarm of sharks flopping around in a tornado were relatively modest—around 1.4 million which is somewhat light for their usual CGI monster extravaganza–it exploded the Twitterverse.
A combination of a hair brained idea and patently ridiculous moments like Ian Ziering flying into a shark with a chainsaw in hand inspired everyone from Mia Farrow (who jokingly claimed she was watching with Philp Roth) to Damon Lindelof (offering to write the sequel) to tweet about it. So, no surprise, here comes a sequel that few will watch but everyone will talk about. The Asylum, who cheerfully own their reputation as dedicated rip-off artists and concept-first, script-later...

Atlantic Rim may be a cheap, DVD imitation of Pacific Rim, but it also works remarkably well as an unofficial prequel, Ryan writes...
History is full of uncanny coincidences. Mark Twain was born on the day Halley's Comet swung by Earth in 1835, and died when it hurtled around again in 1910. The writer Morgan Robertson wrote a book about the sinking of a huge ocean-going liner 14 years before the Titanic collided with an iceberg in 1912. And by an uncanny twist of fate, last month saw the release of Atlantic Rim, which appears to have anticipated Guillermo del Toro's giant-robots-versus-giant-monsters flick Pacific Rim by several weeks.
American film studio The Asylum has a spooky knack of releasing its own similarly-named film just before a major blockbuster. Transmorphers appeared just before Transformers in 2007. I Am Omega appeared at around the time of I Am Legend. Other...

Amazing the things you can find by complete accident when conducting a Google search. Like a Pensacola, Florida, news site spilling the beans about the cast and crew of the Asylum’s Pacific Rim mockbuster Atlantic Rim/From the Sea shooting in their area.
The reason for the two titles is because the film being reported on is clearly Atlantic Rim, The Asylum’s version of Guillermo Del Toro’s giant robots vs. giant monsters from beneath the sea mega-blockbuster coming this summer they initially announced last summer. Given some of the legal wrangling The Asylum has had to deal with in the year since, it might not be released with such a similar title when the time comes. The tentative working title is From the Sea; safe to say that won’t be the release title. I suppose they could retitle it something like Earth vs. the Giant Monsters,...
