Winter 1826. An investigation into the Decembrist uprising is underway in the Peter and Paul Fortress. Meanwhile, mysterious murders are taking place in St. Petersburg. Moscow detective Lavr Petrovich Perekhodov is trying to understand the motives of the criminal. All this looks like revenge, because those killed were informers against the Decembrists. On the body of each victim, Lavr Petrovich also finds pieces of paper with poetic lines. Who will be the next victim of the criminal? The nobleman Alexander Boshnyak, released from investigation, joins the investigation and becomes the victim of an assassination attempt as a secret agent embedded in the ranks of the Decembrists.

Summer 1826. Tsar Nicholas signs a decree on the execution of five Decembrists. Boshniak regains consciousness in Caroline's apartment. They are convinced that the avenger is dead, but a new murder dispels their confidence. General Benkendorf appoints Boshnyak as chief of the investigation and gives Lavr Petrovich his subordination. Boshnyak investigates the murder using a chain of lines from Pushkin's poems.

The poems bring Boshnyak to Ushakov. Having solved a puzzle from a verse found in the album of one of the secular beauties, Boshnyak practically detains the killer, but at the last moment Ushakov manages to escape. At the crime scene, Boshnyak finds evidence that informs about the imminent assassination attempt on Emperor Nicholas I. Meanwhile, Lavr Petrovich finds out that a certain COP may be involved in the attempt on the emperor. Lavr Petrovich suspects Boshnyak's beloved Karolina Sobanskaya, and Boshnyak advises Karolina to hide immediately.

The assassination attempt on the emperor is foiled, and Ushakov disappears. Boshnyak receives a new task - to investigate Pushkin's participation in a conspiracy and a series of murders. Boshnyak, together with police chief Donnikov, travels to Mikhailovskoye and discovers traces of Caroline there. Lavr Petrovich arrives with bloodhounds at Ushakov's estate, but finds only the corpse of the village elder. Donnikov informs Boshnyak that he has orders to arrest Karolina. Boshniak understands that he cannot allow this to happen and decides to save his beloved.
