‘The Eternaut’ (Spanish: El Eternauta) is an Argentine science fiction comic created by Héctor Germán Oesterheld, with illustrations by Francisco Solano López. It was first published in a magazine called Hora Cero Semanal between 1957 and 1959 as a serialized comic. The story follows a small group of survivors after a deadly alien invasion in Buenos Aires.

‘The Eternaut’ was supposed to be adapted to live-action several times in the last couple of decades but every time the project would be abandoned either due to copyright issues of the sheer cost of the project. In February 2020, it was announced that the comic would be made into a TV series for Netflix.

The show will be directed by Bruno Stagnaro and set in the present day. Ricardo Darín will play the lead role, with Carla Peterson, Marcelo Subiotto, César Troncoso, Andrea Pietra, and Ariel Staltari also in the cast.

The classic Argentine graphic novel The Eternaut is getting a chilling new series adaptation, and Netflix has unveiled the first look teaser previewing an icy alien apocalypse ahead.

Netflix premieres The Eternaut globally on April 30, 2025.

In the series, “One summer’s night in Buenos Aires, a mysterious deadly snowfall wipes out most of the population and leaves thousands stranded. Juan Salvo and his friends embark on a desperate struggle for survival. Everything changes when they discover that the toxic snowstorm is only the first attack by a foreign army invading Earth. The only way to stay alive is to join together and fight. No one will survive on their own.”

For fans of international TV, news of the return of South Korean smash hit Squid Game for a third and final season was the big takeaway from Netflix’s global program showcase this week. During its Next on Netflix event, the streamer unveiled plenty of news for its Latin American markets, including a new Anitta documentary and the premiere date for “El Eternauta,” its ambitious adaptation of the Argentinian sci-fi graphic novel of the same name.

In Brazil, it was revealed that an intimate new documentary on Anitta, the country’s biggest pop star, is currently in production. “Larissa: The Other Side of Anitta” is set to premiere this year. Watch a teaser below.

When a rare snow begins falling in Buenos Aires, it kills everything it touches in an instant. Is it nuclear war or something even more sinister? Those that survive suit up in gas masks and layers to stave off death and fight an increasingly violent unseen force that’s trailing their every move. One of the survivors, a man named Juan Salvo, emerges as the leader of the resistance against an imperceivable threat.

Based on the eponymous graphic novel by Héctor Germán Oesterheld and Francisco Solano López, the live-action adaptation The Eternautarrives on Netflix on April 30. The six-episode series was created and directed by Bruno Stagnaro (Okupas) and co-written by Stagnaro and writer-actor Ariel Staltari (Un Gallo para Esculapio).

Netflix has announced the creation of Troll 2, the sequel to its globally acclaimed Norwegian monster movie, which will be released in 2025. The news follows the original film’s success, which enthralled international audiences and broke streaming records.

The first Troll film, which aired in December 2022, was a watershed moment for Netflix. It grossed an incredible 103 million views and became the platform’s most-watched non-English language film. Roar Uthaug, who developed the concept over two decades, will return to direct the sequel.

The film will have a new ensemble cast, including Sara Khorami, Jon Ketil Johnsen, and Gard B. Eidsvold. While precise narrative details remain unknown, the original film’s idea revolved around a huge 150-foot troll rising in the Norwegian highlands and destroying the country’s capital.

“The first film deliberately left room for further exploration,” said producer Kristian Strand Sinkerud, who had previously hinted at a possible sequel.

Netflix leadership have touted the streamer’s upcoming slate of local-language film and television including the Japanese feature Bullet Train Explosion and Troll 2, Roar Uthaug’s sequel to his most-watched non-English-language film on the platform.

“Press play and stay” is how Netflix’s Lat Am content boss characterized the streamer’s programing strategy as he unveiled sneak peeks of two of the most anticipated TV series out of the region ever, 100 Years of Solitude and Senna, along with first-looks at the Vinicius Junior movie and some new shows.

In its fourth year, Netflix’s Geeked Week returned bigger than ever, with breaking news and special exclusives on more than a dozen series, including Avatar: The Last Airbender, Black Mirror, Wednesday, and Squid Game.

Speaking of Squid Game, upcoming games like Squid Game: Unleashed and Monument Valley 3 were also showcased. Plus, never-before-seen clips and trailers from upcoming movies like Don’t Move, It’s What’s Inside, and The Platform 2 were revealed.

The Geeked Week live show was hosted by Joe Manganiello, who announced that he will play the iconic villain Mr. 0 in the highly anticipated upcoming second season of One Piece alongside Lera Abova (Bumper in Berlin) as Miss All Sunday. Cobra Kai stars Jacob Bertrand and Xolo Maridueña emceed the Fan Zone Pod Stage.

Geeked Week Live...

The Eternaut is without a doubt one of the most famous comic books to come out of Argentina. Written by Hector German Oesterheld with art by Francisco Lopez, The Eternaut, or, El Eternauta, ran from 1957 to 1959.

The story followed Juan Salvo and his allies as they fought against an alien invasion which destroyed most of the Earth. The aliens are a mysterious force, rarely seen and unknown to the humans.

Lopez's artwork is beautiful, absolutely full of life, especially for black and white. Oesterheld is often remembered for The Eternaut, and for good reason, it is an incredible feat even among his other great works such as Mort Cinder. Now, it's set to become a TV series.

Netflix's The Eternaut arrives in 2025

Netflix has announced that The Eternaut will be added to their lineup in 2025. The streaming service's website refers to it as Argentinian, and Sci Fi TV for its genres.

Netflix Argentina executives have been promoting the upcoming slate featuring new work from Ricardo Darin, Santiago Mitre, and Juan José Campanella including series adaptations of two of the most iconic graphic novels and comic strips in Latin America.

Leading the new productions at the Made In Argentina showcase unveiled to industry members in Buenos Aires on Monday night was 27 Nights (27 Noches), Daniel Hendler’s adaptation of the family drama novel by Natalia Zito inspired by actual events.

Mitre, who wrote and directed the 2023 Oscar-nominated Argentina, 1985, will serve as producer on 27 Nights.

Campanella, the writer-director of The Secret In Their Eyes...

Netflix has unveiled a deep slate of originals out of Argentina including an animated adaptation of iconic comic strip Mafalda from Oscar-winning director Juan José Campanella. Another adaptation is El Eternauta, based on the graphic novel of the same name. There will also be a local version of dating series Love is Blind and a three-part doc about Argentine soccer star Ángel Di María.

The streamer’s Made In Argentina slate was presented at an event in Buenos Aires and comprised a whopping 19 projects. The standout titles included Mafalda, which has iconic status in Argentina where it ran as a comic strip in various newspapers. Created by cartoonist Quino, it follows the titular little girl and her family and friends.

Campanella, who helmed the Oscar-winning The Secret In Their Eyes (Best Foreign Language Film), will be director, screenwriter and showrunner. Mundoloco CGI, the animation studio he co-founded, is producing the series.

Buenos Aires – Mafalda, the beloved and wily six-year-old drawn into acclaim by celebrated Argentine artist Quino, will bring her socially-conscious hijinks to the screen. News of the adaptation, which will be ushered in by Oscar-winner Juan José Campanella, was announced Monday evening as Netflix unveiled their 2024 ‘Made in Argentina’ slate to a spirited crowd of industry and media professionals.

Campanella will direct, produce and showrun the project, while Gastón Gorali co-pens and acts as general producer of the Netflix Original series and Sergio Fernández boards as production director. Netflix and Campanella and Gorali’s Mundoloco CGI, the studio behind “Metegol,” the largest Latin American animated production to date, produce.

“Mafalda and her friends not only made me laugh a lot, but from time to time, they sent me to the dictionary. And each new word I learned came with the reward of a new laugh,” Campanella revealed in a July statement.

Tomorrow marks 30 years since the death of Ayrton Senna, the legendary Brazilian Formula One driver killed in a grisly crash on the track. He’s as close to a god in the country as any man not named Pelé, yet save for the brilliant 2010 documentary “Senna,” his life has never been depicted on screen.

Netflix will be the first to try with its upcoming scripted series “Senna.” With any luck, Senna will not just be an icon in Brazil but the face of Netflix’s enormous expansion into the Latin American market.
