Web series review: School of Lies streaming on Disney+ Hotstar
Set in the fictional Dalton Town nestled in the hills, the disappearance of a 12 year old boy Shakti from the prestigious RISE boarding school rocks the entire town with the police twiddling their thumbs, clueless about the whereabouts of the boy. Will they succeed in finding Shakti especially when there are so many myths and stories concocted about his behaviour and character by his friends and seniors. There is also a parallel plot of some wrong doings ( won't reveal much !!) going on in the school (drugs, illicit sex etc).
The cast is the strong point of this series with Nimrat Kaur ( as the student counselor) , Amir Bashir( a housemaster at RISE) , Vir Pachasia ( the kid who has played Shakti) & the 2 seniors TK & Vikram have really done full justice to their roles.
The damp, gloomy, foggy ambience in the hills goes a long way in creating a spooky vibe that is essential for the for plot.
The story however moves at a snails pace and gets very tedious to watch at times. Yawn alert!! Could have been a bit fast paced. People who like "slowburn's" will enjoy it though.
8 episodes are a bit too many for this series which should've ended in perhaps 6.
Worth a dekho !! Not the greatest, but not bad either!!
Going with 3/5 for this one .. adios 🙂

In the fictional Dalton Town, at the fictional RISE boarding school, a regular day turns into a crisis when the house master notices that a child has been absent. The disappearance of seventh-grader Shakti Salgaonkar is just the start of the drama and suspense that is about to rattle the foundations of this all-boys private educational institution, with a master's daughter as the only female student.
Intercutting the search for Shakti (Vir Pachisia) and his parents' anguish is the story of two seniors who are burdened by their own complex secrets. Final year students Vikram (Varin Roopani) and TK (Aryan Singh Ahlawat) are being mentored by their housemaster Sam (Aamir Bashir). As they navigate the delicate balance of life in boarding school, Vikram and TK are making some questionable and dangerous choices along the way.
School counsellor Nandita (Nimrat Kaur) tries to assist with the investigation. Her methods at building a psychological profile of Shakti or making any headway are set aside when the screenplay decides instead to focus on Nandita's own ghosts and emotional vacuity.
As is expected in a boarding school that thrives on discipline and hierarchy, there are plenty of rules, hence plenty of rules for the boarders to break, sometimes with the blessings of the faculty. A staffer moonlights as a drug peddler. There is another side-bar about trafficking of various kinds.
School of Lies (Disney+ Hotstar) is high on atmospherics. Director Avinash Arun Dhaware (Killa, Paatal Lok) immerses you into a campus that serves as a microcosm of very big issues.
The motive behind Shakti's disappearance is revealed midway. Dhaware, who has also co-created and filmed the eight-episode series, is in great command over the suspenseful and macabre moments.
But the human stories run shallow, and the script repeats whodunit similitudes. The script (Ishani Banerjee, Nishant Agarwala, Shoaib Nazeer) tries to create a diversion, succeeding partially until it loads the dysfunctional with so much damage that our sympathies shift to impatience.
School of Lies abounds with characters who have PTSD responses or need to exorcise their ghosts. Joy is fleeting, with brief moments of magic, such as jumping across a broken bridge, listening to fables about the forest or a game of football.
Dysfunction is endemic, most quantifiable in the defective hiring practices. At least half the staff is ill-qualified to shepherd impressionable, lonely, often broken children living away from home and families. Shakti's disappearance brings down a house of cards. Yet, the police investigation, headed by Varun (Hemant Kher), has a job on its hands eking out the truth.
No one is beyond blame - neither the teachers, students or parents. Even Shakti's mother Trish (Geetika Vidya Ohlyan) and Vikram's widowed parent Pallavi (Sonali Kulkarni) are carrying unhealed scars. The mid-series arrival of a sadistic former student, whose behaviour captures an all-boys boarding school's tradition of bullying and harassment, shakes things up.

But the shifts between linear and non-linear storytelling do not serve the complexity of the world and the emotional fragility of the characters. Nandita, as the keeper of secrets, emerges as the most complex character.
The show emphasises the danger of unresolved issues, childhood trauma and proclivity for repeated behavioural patterns, but opts for visual impact and specific surprise, padding the narrative with surplus characters and side plots. The lead performances are moving, particularly Bashir, Kaur, Nitin Goel, Roopani and Ahlawat.

This series has a good plot but the execution was not that flawless. Very slow and boring which will compel you to shift from this series to some other.
I recommend if you have patience and time you can go for this else this is not your cup of tea.
Acting sense of the child actors are good and commendable and location and set up are also excellent but execution is very poor.
For acting i will put 5 stars /10 stars
For location and Set 7stars/10 stars
For execution of the story 3stars/10 stars
For story i will give 6stars/10 stars And overall experience I will put only 5 stars/10 stars Now it's your will !!

The series may seem beautiful on the surface, but there is deep agony underneath. You don't even need to look closely to see the hellish nature of the characters' lives. In School of Lies, every character is well-developed, and their guilt is palpable. They are not just empty vessels for the plot; we can feel that they have existed in this world for a long time, even beyond what the camera shows. The episodes are of decent length, but it takes time to settle in, and there are too many unnecessary side stories that make it difficult to understand the main plot. While the show is well-written, the multitude of characters and their hidden dark pasts or mysterious connections can be confusing and distract the audience's focus.
This show is a shame. It was too dark and non sensical at many points. Show makers tried to make it look like shows such as Dark or so, but they fail horribly. The premise was okay, but as the show progressed, I regretted my decision to watch it.
It crosses many boundaries in the name of creative liberty. If you are a parent, you will be disgusted the way story goes on and finally ends. The actors did a good job though, but what can they do if the intent and the story is preposterous and horrendous.
The ending is so open ended, there are many loopholes you can't ignore.
Please save your time and watch something else. Not worth binge watching it.

A probable good story, i hoped, turned out to be a uttermost disaster. So many sub-stories that doesn't have anything to do with the whole concept. Total waste of time.
I kept hoping and hoping of something will happen, somewhere the things will link.. but literally a waste of time.
With a good casting, i had huge hopes but the series is no where even close to it. Giving 1 rating is also too much, deserves 0 absolutely.
Nimrat is the only thing kept me till the last episode.
Illogical, disastrous, pathetic, naive.
If only I have to say one good thing about is it, then the locations and the picturisation.. that's it.
Don't waste your time thinking that, the cast is good, so the series will be!!
Have a good night sleep than binge watch it.

One of the boldest yet most sensitive series on Indian ott yet. Don't let the newly conservative reviewers fool you. This series is as state-of-the-art as so many other murder mystery bbc productions out there. Almost every actor understood the assignment well and enacted great. The story hits the shoddy value and conservative system out of the park. Consent, morality and evilness are woven in a tangled web. Even the supposed victim can be pure evil. Even the supposed evil can be merely a victim himself. Such questions are superbly raised and the viewer is left to ponder. Scenery, cinematography, performances, everything is top notch. No sex scenes to titilate. Just tragedies unfolding on your screen.
I can't believe it! It started out promising, a missing child, a school and an incident, these headlines should make for a great story! But oh boy how wrong I was. The director tried hard to portray an out of sync timeline, but failed miserably in it's execution. The build up around the mystery of the missing children and the reveal of what happened made me want to crawl my own eyes put. Whoever made this needs to be educated in filmmaking. The reveal totally fell flat, like a baloon with a tiny hole in it, losing air slowly. I am embarassed to have binge watched it. If you want to watch something GOOD go and watch Candy, the director should too.

The makers here have shown a hostel and what students and teachers do and what it ends up
The content is as simple as shown in the teaser of a missing boy from a hostel and how other stories are linked with the missing..the series started at a good note but then from the 4 th episode it seems they were dragging the main content with other stories which had completely no connection with the missing boy..the series is extremely slow in 8 long episodes...the climax what we waited for was such a loose one and unfolded that it feels a lot of time was wasted
Amir , nimrat, Sonali, Hemant all were wasted by giving small roles these actors are meant to play strong lead roles..the boys played a good role like vir aryan Varin divyansh and parthiv
The bad luck of this series is that it was released with 2 big series scoop and asur 2 so was kept aside.

This series is snail speed slow.
The message of the story really shows some dark sides but it looks like every one is SUPER HIGH and moving at 0.1x speed.
The director really does not know how to connect the dots.
The timeline of the story is also not clear.
Actors could have been better too.

Absolutely loved this show. Noteworthy points :-
1. Direction is slick. In most suspense serial, a strong storyline must be supported by food direction. This show delivers on that front.
2. Storyline has many layers & writer has intertwined them very well .
3. Screenplay is smooth. Never a moment where show would feel lethargic. Length of episodes is kept at 35 minutes 4. Scenic location - Cinematography is brilliant. This show has been shot in stupendously beautiful locations.
5. Plethora of sensitive issues touched upon which grace.
6. Nimrit Kaur gives an amazing performance.
A wonderful watch .

This series isn't for the faint hearted. Only people with depth and intelligence will be able to understand the essence of this show. The trailer exhibits an air of thriller and suspense however, it runs way deep. The series not only is gripping and intense but also show a whirlwind of human emotions and dynamics. It addresses the impact of child abuse and the trauma that is carried through life.
Fear, shame, guilt and regret, such emotions are expressed with such subtle intensity that makes one wonder. The actors have done a fabulous work, and the writer has left an indelible mark.
The way the characters are depicted is phenomenal. Like I said, it isn't for the weak. This show forces you to think about everything that's messed up and normalized in the current scenario. It makes you question the moral compass, the boundaries one creates, the definition of love and everything that comes with it. It's raw, unapologetic and makes your skin crawl with disbelief.
The writing of the show displays the conundrum between right and wrong, good and bad. It is bold and explicit. Unlike other shows where the sexual content is obnoxiously displayed under the garb of creativity. This show addresses the social issues with much more empathy and compassion. Yet, leaving the audience with goosebumps.
I recommend this show to anyone who has the courage to sit through a rollercoaster ride of intense human emotions and understand deeply the need for having more such shows that reflect the truth of the society we live in today.

These are the true stories of Catholic and missionary boarding school in Indian-Subcontinent( Barr-e-Sagheer) if you dig out you will find much more, when children come out of the institutions they become Zombies without any sense feeling less emotion less just like programmed machines in crowd of Humans
If I got chance I will dismantle these instructions to save children becoming Zombies, but I knew it, it's never going to happen these institutions are flourishing much more faster than even before, in nowadays hectic lifestyle Parents don't have to for their own children, why called children it's by-products of their enjoyment, sorry to say that I'm also one of them.

Supposedly, a suspense thriller where the culprit confesses his crime without the plot even close to reveal or getting caught. All the sub plots are revealed as part of the screenplay why, because the season is about to end. Such juxtaposition of the narrative. So many redundant characters, the missing child's father, his friends, Vikrams girlfriend, his brother even the policemen just endless nonsensical introduction of characters. The story just doesn't stack up, you'd think this all leading to something big but ends to be in pieces only. Including social issues, for the sake of it!! Nothing really ties up and leaves you unrelated to any of it. Nobody contributes to anything, theres an event, there are stories and then theres a confession about a mistake. I mean cmon this isn't dark, only because of its treatment. Also, how can I sexually harassed victim who is in trauma all his life inflict the same on others, wheres the character empathy? I was really not able to relate to even a single character on this show. A very shallow plot and connection between boarding school, sexual harassment on an isolated hill station & a boy goes missing thats the start and end of it. Trying to weave through spirits of forests and peoples past lives trauma, barely even scratches the surface of depth let alone metaphorical screenplay.

A little bit dark series with some dark effects too... A must watch web series for everyone ,really enjoyed it with my family...the script was superb with so many plots. It was a joyful exciting ride. Loved all the characters. The fresh faces have a good job to establish a connection with the viewers. The storyline was perfect from my point of view. It delivered on all fronts, with stunning camera angles, direction, great dialogues. The storyline was engaging and kept me on the edge of doing bing watch. Felt much more enthusiastic with the content.
P.s- if you haven't watched it yet, you are missing so many things...

Didn't read any reviews or premises for this webseries and I was left totally disappointed, though I wasn't expecting anything superlative, it was totally 180 degrees opposite to what I thought it would be. I mean seriously if you yourself are the victim of child sex abuse, you tends to be vocal about it not go on making victims by yourself or to keep quiet to protect the others. And what about justice for the boy, why the counsellor hasn't told especially to the mother what the convict has confessed to her on the hospital bed. Parents are totally ignorant towards their child as father is searching spirituality and mother is in search of quite time to **** her boyfriend and why there have to be an infidelity in an Indian webseries/movies to show liberation of woman.
Don't know why I am stupid enough to fall for Bollywood crap everytime. Guess losing subscription to ott apps is the way to come out of all these.

A web-series that shows bad parenting and damaged teachers. Sonali kaulkarni's character behaves like gandhari overlooking her son's murderous tendencies & violent outbursts. Schools are full of bullies, in fact teachers promote it. The counsellor played by Nimrat Kaur clearly overlooks a murder.
In short its "Andher Nagri, Chopat Raja"
But whats shocking is the serious falling standards of content creators. They are creating content/ web-series just for the sake of creating something. What they dont understand is the influence such shows have on the viewers.
Pathetic story. I don't recommend it to anyone.

You can do pletny of things instead of wasting time watching this. Every single character talks slow as possible. Nobody, literally nobody talks here or Active. Everyone is like in depression. How can students be like this??? I have watched plenty of webseries and regret watching only one and that is school of lies.
Dark comedy??? Sense of humor???? Anything interesting??? Exciting??? Something new??? Something unique??? How should a hostel life be shown?? How does school students live and behave???
It was so tough to keep the eyes open. Could have finished this in 2 or 3 episodes seriously. Disaster!
