The doctor will not see you if you haven't watched "Severance" season 2, episode 7, "Chikhai Bardo" — because spoilers lie ahead.
We've seen glimpses of Dr. Mauer, played by Robby Benson, on "Severance" before, but in the seventh episode of season 2, the stunning "Chikhai Bardo," we learn a lot more about the not-so-good doctor lurking on the testing floor of Lumon Industries. What you might not know, though, is that Benson also voiced a major Disney character who has at least one similarity to Dr. Mauer, in that the character in question holds a woman he loves captive in the hopes that she'll love him in return.
Let me back up for a second and talk about Dr. Mauer, the man of the hour (so to speak). Alongside a nurse named Cecily (Sandra Bernhard), Dr. Mauer's entire existence within the halls of Lumon seems focused on Gemma. Each evening, Mauer speaks with...

Ahead of the Academy Awards this weekend, a look back at legendary Oscars host Billy Crystal and his classic opening songs.
Conan O’Brien will hosting the 97th Oscars this weekend. It’s a pretty solid choice by the Academy after a slew of slightly dull (and even calamitous) ceremonies.
Even if O’Brien absolutely nails the gig, it’s unlikely he’ll be anywhere near as good as the best host of the modern Oscars: Billy Crystal. Crystal hosted the ceremony a total of nine times and made it look easy. His opening monologues have become iconic, thanks to his quick wit and cracking songs.
Crystal hosted the Oscars for the first time in 1990 and opened the show with a joke about the previous year’s opening act. “Is it me or are you just glad I’m not Snow White?” Crystal joked, referencing the awful sketch with Rob Lowe...

Seasoned marketing veteran Ricky Strauss has been tapped to consult for DC Studios on “Superman,” TheWrap has exclusively learned.
“We are leaving no stone unturned when it comes to ensuring that audiences know about and experience our film,” DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran told reporters last Friday at the company’s event touting the upcoming DC slate.
It’s the 30-year industry veteran’s first project since leaving his post as Apple TV+ head of marketing last year, after a 16-month stint.
During his tenure at the tech giant, Strauss led consumer marketing campaigns, creative advertising, media and promotions across Apple TV+’s original series and films.
The hiring of Strauss comes after the exit of Warner Bros. global marketing chief Josh Goldstine in January. Safran said he and co-chief James Gunn felt supported by Wbd head David Zaslav with the launch of their first big film in the DC shakeup,...

Best Original Song at the Oscars presents an interesting choice for Oscar voters. With a few of the top contenders snubbed from the category altogether — “Kiss the Sky” from The Wild Robot, “Compress/Repress” from Challengers, “Harper and Will Go West” from Will and Harper — this would seem to be a cakewalk for the one original musical in the category, Emilia Pérez, which also happens to be the year’s most-nominated film. But behind-the-scenes scandals have scrambled this race, and many others. Here is our breakdown of the race as it stands today.

In a lot of ways, the '90s was a true golden age for Disney. From absolutely monster animated hits like "The Lion King" to the true Christmas classic that is "The Muppet Christmas Carol," it was a rich time for the Mouse House. Yet, not everything can be a winner out of the gate. Such was the case with "Heavyweights." Released in 1995, the live-action comedy about kids at a fat camp whose summer is upended by a weight loss guru simply didn't connect with audiences in its day.
As has often been the case throughout Disney's history, animation has been the studio's bread and butter. That was no different in the '90s, as hits like "Aladdin" and "Beauty and the Beast" took center stage.

It’s a done deal: Hulu and 20th Television will not be proceeding with a TV adaptation of Sarah J. Maas’ bestselling fantasy book series A Court of Thorns and Roses.
It was four years ago when word came out that Ron Moore had teamed with Maas for A Court of Thorns and Roses TV series at 20th Television, where Moore was under an overall deal. The project was set up at Hulu with a script commitment plus significant penalty.
Rumors that the adaptation may be getting scrapped at Hulu first started circulating in early 2024, with speculation intensifying after Moore left 20th TV to return to Sony Pictures Television a couple of months later. There was talk at the time that Disney siblings 20th TV and Hulu may try to pursue the IP with another writer. Ultimately, they won’t be going forward with the title.
Reps for Hulu and 20th TV declined comment.

Do you think the Disney live-action remakes are bad? It sounds like one for a certain DreamWorks hit is going to be worse!
It’s no secret Disney has been on a kick of live-action remakes for scores of their past animated classics. Sometimes, it can work. Cinderella and The Jungle Book were both pretty good, even enhancing some of the story and shining well.
But those are the exceptions, as many more of these remakes pale next to the original animated versions. Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Aladdin and The Little Mermaid weren’t awful but seemed unneeded.
Then there are flat-out horrible remakes like Mulan, Pinocchio, or Dumbo. It just seems a total waste of time and money and Disney adds to it with things like the Mufasa prequel no one was asking for.
Disney is still going ahead with remakes of Moana, Tangled, and others on the dock.

There’s a scene in Netflix’s “Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” that might seem familiar to some; at least it should be to “The Lord of the Rings” fans.
Zany inventor Wallace and his pet dog Gromit are back, but it’s the return of the penguin criminal, Feathers McGraw, who has vengeance in mind. The story picks up with Feathers in a zoo, determined and plotting to get out — with whatever means it takes. Enter Wallace’s latest invention: Norbot, a friendly garden gnome that he programs to lend a hand with the pruning, picking and cultivating. A cunning Feathers, however, manages to reprogram Norbot into becoming his evil right-hand cohort, out to destroy Wallace, his neighborhood business and his reputation.
Overnight, evil Norbot creates an army of clones that build a lair in Wallace’s basement, where they store and melt down stolen garden tools — and build a submarine.

There's been talk of a potential Spaceballs sequel for many years, and we recently got confirmation that a follow-up to Mel Brooks' '80s Star Wars spoof is officially in the works.
The movie is in development at Amazon MGM Studios, with Josh Gad set to star and produce alongside Brooks. Josh Greenbaum will direct the film from a screenplay by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Gad.
Gad aside, no cast members have been announced, but we're now hearing that the studio has reached out to a major up-and-coming star for an undisclosed role in the movie.
In THR's profile of Wicked star Ariana Grande, the trade mentions that the recent Academy Award-nominee has been offered a number of roles which she has yet to commit to, including a part in Spaceballs 2.
"A disaster wedding comedy, a female detective romp set in a Housewives-style reality show, and a Spaceballs sequel.

When Karla Sofía Gascón began talking with Jacques Audiard about starring in his audacious musical crime drama Emilia Pérez, she found herself keenly excited by the challenge of portraying the title role: a menacing drug lord seeking to undergo gender affirmation surgery so that she might finally live as her authentic self. “It’s a bit as if Beauty and the Beast were locked in the same body,” she explains. “When the film opens, she is Manitas, a woman who’s confined in a body she doesn’t belong in, but who finds herself at a point where she has the opportunity to leave her life behind — a life she wants no part of anymore.” With her fearless performance, Gascón pulled off one of the most singular acting feats in cinema history, embodying both the intimidating criminal and the luminous woman who later emerges ready to atone for the sins...

The Gold Standard is a Gold Derby series where we speak to legendary figures in Hollywood who take us through their award-worthy greatest hits. Below, four-time Oscar nominee Chris Sanders talks about his incredible animation career, including current Best Animated Feature nominee The Wild Robot.
The Early Years
Sanders started working at Disney in 1987 in the visual development department but got his big break when he was asked to work on storyboards for the 1990s animated film Rescuers Down Under. From there, He worked on some of the greatest Disney animated movies ever, including Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, and Mulan, which he cowrote.
As a kid watching these Disney specials, they would show how animation worked. The part that was always the most mysterious was when they passed the door that said “Story.” So when I got to Disney Animation, the only job available was with the visual development.

The Walt Disney Studios continued the effective marketing campaign for the new live-action family adventure Lilo & Stitch during the Super Bowl. You can now watch the Big Game spot and the previous two teasers online.
The marketing takes a page from how the original animated film was promoted. For that campaign, Stitch invaded other Disney properties such as The Little Mermaid (1989), Beauty and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992) and The Lion King (1994). This time he’s running loose at the Super Bowl, having some more fun with The Lion King and more.
A live-action reimagining of Disney’s 2002 animated classic, Lilo & Stitch is the wildly funny and touching story of a lonely Hawaiian girl and the fugitive alien who helps to mend her broken family.
Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind the animated feature film Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, the film stars Sydney Elizebeth Agudong, Billy Magnussen,...

This year’s Academy Awards will mark the 23rd year there’s been a category for Best Animated Feature. The past winners have included a good mix of top earners (the first award went to Shrek!) and some more, shall we say, sophisticated choices. Indeed, last year, the prize went to Hayao Miyazaki, the grand master of Japanese animation, for The Boy and the Heron. Before that, Hollywood’s favorite kid-in-a-toy-store Guillermo del Toro won for his adaptation of Pinocchio. This year’s animation Academy Award is not as easy to predict as some other categories, but we’ve gone to the drawing board, and this is what we’ve sketched out.

Meanwhile, “Flow,” the low-budget cat survival adventure, grabbed Best Independent Feature and Best Writing for writer-director Gints Zilbalodis.

Disney’s long-awaited live-action reboot of its 1937 animated classic Snow White doesn’t open until March 21, however, box office forecasts are out on the Rachel Zegler-Gal Gadot starring movie.
Quorum reports a 3-day start for the Marc Webb directed movie of $63M-$70M while other sources believe $65M at this point in time is fair. As a comp, the 2014 Angelina Jolie Sleeping Beauty live-action spinoff opened to $69.4M back in early summer 2014. At that level, it would rep the highest domestic opening for the Golden Globe winning Zegler whose Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes ranks as the actress best opening at the B.O. with $44.6M.
Awareness is solid among women over and under 35. In regards to those who are willing to pay to see the movie in a theater, women under 35 are first, followed by women over 35, and then men under 35 per Quorum.

Chris Sanders is a one-of-a-kind artist.
As a kid, looking through various “art of” books for the 1990s Disney classics, you could always pick out a Chris Sanders illustration or a Chris Sanders storyboard, even without a little note explaining that it was him. It was just obvious. It wasn’t just the style of his illustrations or drawings; it was how much story and emotion was conveyed, breathlessly, with every line.
His latest film as a writer/director, “The Wild Robot,” contains all that we have come to expect (and love) from Sanders – an art style that boldly pushes the medium forward, characters that are so easy to love and root for, and a truthfulness to the occasionally harsh realities of life that are never dwelled on but are instead depicted with frank objectivity.

The idea of animated features getting live-action remakes is nothing new, but the production of live-action remakes has obviously shifted into overdrive in recent years, with Disney bringing us the likes of Cinderella, The Jungle Book (again), Beauty and the Beast, Dumbo, Aladdin, The Lion King, The Lady and the Tramp, Mulan, Pinocchio, The Little Mermaid… the list goes on. And it seems like DreamWorks has been impressed by that animation-to-live-action business model, as they’re teaming up with Universal Pictures to bring a live-action remake of their 2010 animated feature How to Train Your Dragon to theatres on June 13, 2025. In anticipation of this release, we here at JoBlo have decided to put together a list of Everything We Know About the live-action How to Train Your Dragon… and here we go:

Whether set in 1980s Korea or an imagined future time and space, Bong Joon Ho’s films address issues that are transnational and universal: class disparity, social injustice, the environmental crisis, and political and moral corruption.

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is celebrating filmmaker Bong Joon Ho with a new exhibition dedicated to his creative development.
IndieWire can announce that starting March 23, the Academy Museum will exhibit Bong as part of the “Director’s Inspiration” gallery. Agnés Varda was the previous auteur honored with the museum series.
The Director’s Inspiration gallery “focuses on the filmography and cinematic influences of a director who has established a narrative and visual style that is unmistakably their own, traceable through bodies of work that become touchstones for other filmmakers,” according to the Academy Museum site.
“Director’s Inspiration: Bong Joon Ho” will highlight the “Mickey 17” director’s creative process, filmography, and cinematic influences. The exhibit will include more than 100 original objects from storyboards and research materials to film posters, concept art, creature models, props, and on-set photographs, all from Bong’s archive and personal collection.

Streaming has changed the entertainment industry in many ways, and one of them is sheer unpredictability. Because streaming a movie is considerably easier and involves less financial risk than heading to a theater, viewers are more likely to go wild with their movie night selections, which in turn means that the list of a streaming platform's most popular movies at any given time can feature some seriously surprising titles. Such is the case with the current top 10 movies streaming on Max in the U.S. Leading the pack is "Uncharted," a video game movie that became a streaming success on the platform despite its 41% Rotten Tomatoes score. The famous 2017 sci-fi flop "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" is also a massive hit on Max, and together, the two movies showcase the streaming audience's willingness to experiment.
What's more, these two titles are far from the only unexpected names to make the cut here.

Have you seen the Walt Disney-directed animated short "The Skeleton Dance?" A part of Disney's "Silly Symphony" series, the short revolves around four human skeletons dancing merrily in a graveyard, imitating the allegorical Dance of Death (also known as danse macabre). It isn't particularly spooky, but it is a fun, whimsical piece of animation that is still regarded with a sense of nostalgic fondness. However, this 1930 short was not always viewed through such a benign lens. Indeed, "The Skeleton Dance" was banned in Denmark upon its original release, with its subject matter being deemed too ... macabre. This moral stance to justify censorship might seem a bit silly in hindsight, as animated skeletons using bones as a xylophone hardly make for an unsettling premise. Well, in vaguely related news, the short entered the U.S. public domain on January 1, 2025, so you can now enjoy these fine skeletal gentlemen having a gala time to your heart's content.

Before Jackie Chan became the high-flying action hero we all know, he took a different kind of leap – straight into a controversial film career. Back in the day, long before he was smashing box offices with his stunts, Chan appeared in an adult film, a decision that raised eyebrows. But here’s the kicker: he never shied away from owning it.

Inspired by Hollywood icons like Marlon Brando, Chan believed doing what it took to survive was all part of the journey.

With a star-studded cast and well-known director in Bill Condon (the live-action Beauty and the Beast), the new version of Kiss of the Spider Woman was one of the highest-profile premieres at this year’s Sundance. Despite this promising batch of talent in front of and behind the camera, the film is mostly middling — although its strengths reach such highs that they can carry the film.
Kiss of the Spider Woman Review
Kiss of the Spider Woman is based on the 1992 Broadway musical of the same name, which was itself based on the 1976 novel. It follows a political prisoner who finds unexpected kinship with his cellmate, who begins to tell him the story of their favorite old Hollywood musical starring an iconic movie star.
For a film that is literally Bill Condon’s love letter to classic movie musicals, it’s a shame that Kiss of the Spider Woman is so lethargic.

The concept of reference points in animation is common if you're in the know, but might surprise folks who don't have much experience with or knowledge of the history of the medium. Even the greatest and most talented illustrators have to start somewhere when creating a character, and it's no different for the craftspeople working for Walt Disney Animation Studios. In the early eras of Disney animation, reference points were often live actors or animals. In the cases of "Bambi" and "Dumbo," for example, if you check out the 1941 film "The Reluctant Dragon" (a movie that was itself bizarrely censored for one particular animated detail), you can see animators literally watching how deer and elephants move so they can accurately capture those minute details in designing the titular characters.
As the world approached the 21st century, however, Disney animators started to look not just to real people, but to specifically...

'Frozen 3' isn't being released until 2027 because they don't want it to just be "a money grab".Josh Gad, who voices snowman Olaf in the beloved blockbuster Disney franchise, insists they don't want to "rush" the third movie and give fans a flick that is “absolutely worthy” of the 2013 original.Speaking on 'The Spotlight with Jessica Shaw' podcast on SiriusXM, he said of the follow-up to the 2019 musical fantasy: "Anything that I have seen or know I will have been sworn to secrecy on."He continued: “Here’s what I can tell you. “There’s a reason the movie is coming out in 2027. Oscar-winning Sundance Film Festival veteran Bill Condon returned to Park City to present the world premiere of his new movie musical, Kiss of the Spider Woman, at Eccles Center Theatre on Sunday night. When it was over and all the credits had rolled, his star Jennifer Lopez was moved to tears, the capacity crowd delivered two standing ovations and a star was born thanks to a revelatory turn from Tonatiuh.
Considering the pedigree of its filmmaker — Condon previously directed musicals Dreamgirls and Beauty and the Beast and wrote the Oscar-winning Chicago — and its global superstar who plays dual roles including the title character, Spider Woman was the most anticipated debut of Sundance this year. In his review, The Hollywood Reporter‘s chief film critic David Rooney calls it one of Lopez’s best roles of her decades-long career.

Jennifer Lopez, outfitted in a sparkling, webbed-up gown and sky-high black heels, fought back tears as “Kiss of the Spider Woman” was embraced at Sundance Film Festival with a standing ovation. She told the audience at Park City’s Eccles Theatre that starring in the musical adaptation fulfilled a lifelong dream.

Most fairy tales were told and retold countless times before Walt Disney ever got his hands on them, and yet, the sensibility behind such animated classics as “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” and “Sleeping Beauty” has proven so popular on such an international scale that few know these stories’ darker origins. The family-friendly studio’s more-wholesome-than-horrifying approach gives Norwegian writer-director Emilie Blichfeldt plenty of room to push back with “The Ugly Stepsister,” a deliciously extreme take on the beloved “Cinderella” legend, complete with broken noses, severed toes and other gory details befitting the Grimm bros.
Premiering in the Midnight section of the Sundance Film Festival, the graphic update swipes a different page from the Disney playbook: Instead of focusing on the familiar wench-in-waiting, Blichfeldt recenters her version on one of the tale’s iconic antagonists, finding empathy for the pig-nosed, slightly plump stepsister (played by Lea Myren) who’s...

The Walt Disney Company is facing a lawsuit from an animator who claims that the Moana movies borrowed heavily from a script and art of his own, adding that he was duped by another studio into sharing these ideas. The damages sought? $10 billion.
In the lawsuit, animator Buck Woodall claims that Jenny Marchick, a one-time development director at Mandeville Films (whose Disney partnership resulted in movies like 2017’s Beauty and the Beast and Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers), relayed key materials – including a script, illustrations and more – to Disney. To quote the 33-page filing: [Disney and Marchick] “participated in a fraudulent enterprise that encompassed the theft, misappropriation, and extensive exploitation of Woodall’s copyrighted materials, intellectual property, and trade secrets as set forth in this Complaint. There is plenty to check out on TV tonight, Sunday, Jan. 19. Now you just need to determine whether you want to watch a movie, sports, or something in between.
This is a big weekend for the NFL. It’s all about the NFL Divisional Playoffs, and one of those games will push into the primetime schedule. It’s not on the usual network for Sundays, though. If you’re still not interested in sports, though, there are still some great options across the broadcast networks.
NFL Divisional Playoffs, Bring It On, and more
We start with the NFL Divisional Playoffs. We’re used to Sunday night games airing in NBC, but that’s not the case tonight. While there is a game on NBC, that is earlier in the day. Instead, the evening game will air on CBS this week, with the schedule starting at 6:30 p.m. Et/3:30 p.

It was criminal that the Best Animated Film category didn’t exist at the Oscars before 2001. Iconic films like The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Aladdin, and Mulan missed out on the golden statuette. While Beauty and the Beast became the first animated feature to be nominated for Best Picture, the absence of a dedicated Animated Feature category left a void in recognizing the artistry of animated films at the Oscars.
The creation of the award, in hindsight, inadvertently confined animated films to their own category. Following the 81st Academy Awards, cinephiles noted that no rule prevented Wall-e from being nominated for Best Picture, sparking debates on animated films’ true recognition.
At the time of the award’s introduction, Disney had cooled off, and Pixar (distributed by Disney) took the reins, dominating with creativity and innovation. Pixar has claimed 11 of the 23 Oscars for Best Animated Feature.
Today, the animated landscape is more competitive than ever.

Josh Gad addresses the full story of the gay LeFou controversy in Beauty and the Beast. Leading up to the release of Disney's live-action remake in 2017, director Bill Condon teased in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the movie would feature "an exclusively gay moment" for LeFou. Despite expectations of LeFou being Disney's first openly gay character, this only amounted to a fleeting glimpse of LeFou dancing with another man during Beauty and the Beast's ending. Josh Gad later shared regrets about how this was handled.
In Gad's new memoir, In Gad We Trust (via Entertainment Weekly), he goes in-depth about his regrets and frustrations with LeFou being touted as a groundbreaking character for Lgbtqia+ representation. If you forgot, the 43-year-old actor played Gaston’s (Luke Evans) faithful friend LeFou in the movie, which starred Emma Watson.

Disney has already kicked off the marketing campaign for an upcoming movie that will almost certainly make $1 billion. The entertainment conglomerate is no stranger to billion-dollar movies, as their Walt Disney Animation Studios animated output has included Frozen ($1.27 billion), Zootopia ($1.02 billion), and Frozen II ($1.45 billion) while billion-dollar Walt Disney Studios movies include 2019's The Lion King ($1.661 billion), 2017's Beauty and the Beast ($1.27 billion), 2019's Aladdin ($1.05 billion), and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest ($1.07 billion). However, the company has put out even more billion-dollar titles thanks to its acquisitions of various studios.
In fact, the only 2024 releases that have so far earned $1 billion belong to two of these studios, namely Pixar's Inside Out 2, which grossed $1.69 billion, becoming the highest-grossing animated movie of all time, and Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine, which is the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever, with $1.34 billion. Frozen's Elsa comes to life in a new cosplay, which recreates her ice powers. Released in 2013 and directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, the Disney animated adventure film follows Princess Anna (Kristen Bell) as she embarks on a mission to recover her sister, Elsa (Idina Menzel), whose ice powers have plunged the kingdom of Arendelle into an eternal winter. The film was a major hit and was followed by the even more successful Frozen 2, and both Anna and Elsa are now set to return once more in the announced Frozen 3.
While the wait continues for Frozen 3, cosplayer Grimilde Malatesta recreates Elsa's look from the "Let It Go" sequence from the original movie in an impressive cosplay. The cosplay features a screen-accurate blue Elsa gown, along with the character's blonde hairstyle and makeup. The cosplay even includes a digital ice effect reminiscent of Elsa's powers in the movie.

As viral marketing stunts go, there’s a somewhat meta feel to cramming the cast of Severance into a glass box at New York City’s Grand Central Station.
Adam Scott, Patricia Arquette, Britt Lower, Zach Cherry, and Tramell Tillman were among those who brought the Lumon Industries office to life for a crowd of enraptured commuters.
Overseeing it all was Ben Stiller, director of the Apple TV+ series, which is set to return for its second season on January 17.

Dan Erickson’s drama centers around a surgical procedure that separates the work self from the off-hours self, meaning the Lumon crew were very much on the clock at Grand Central.
Onlookers captured them interacting and throwing paper planes at one another, all under the watchful eye of the Tillman’s menacing Milchick.
