While the official lineup of films at the Cannes Film Festival taking place in May won’t be made public until mid-April, there are already some early rumblings of what projects we should expect to see on that list and there are plenty of reasons to get excited.

That group of potential entries as compiled by Deadline includes directorial debuts with Kristen Stewart‘s “The Chronology Of Water” (still a chance it might not be completed in time), and Scarlett Johansson‘s “Eleanor The Great.”

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon isn't quite done with its holiday hiatus just yet. But the late-night TV show is already looking ahead to 2025.

Like the rest of late-night TV, The Tonight Show closed up shop just before Christmas. Jimmy Fallon and his team received a well-deserved break through the holiday season. The NBC show plans to jump right back into the mix when it returns in 2025.

The first new show of the new year is set for Monday, January 6. Fallon will chat with Joe Manganiello and Charli D'Amelio. Rapper Busta Rhymes will serve as the musical guest.

Manganiello will be on to promote season 2 of Deal or No Deal Island. The actor hosts the reimagined game show for NBC, and the new season starts on January 7. Manganiello may also tease his role in the new season of Netflix's One Piece.

After scoring her first Golden Globe nomination for her star turn in The Last Showgirl, Pamela Anderson caught up with Deadline to tease upcoming projects and discuss what this long-awaited moment in her career means to her.

In terms of upcoming films for Anderson at present, the buzziest would have to be Paramount’s The Naked Gun reboot, in which she stars opposite Liam Neeson, who she says she adores. “It was physical comedy, so it’s completely different,” Anderson says. “I’m literally running into walls, so I’m really excited about that one.”

Then, there’s Rosebush Pruning, a thriller in which she stars opposite a slew of “incredible young actors” including Riley Keough, Elle Fanning, and Lukas Gage. That project called for “a very serious, classic style of acting,” Anderson says, “which is really fun to be around because it’s always the stuff I responded to.

Mubi, which recently planted a flag in the U.S. with the wide release of Coralie Fargeat’s “The Substance,” has welcomed Zhang Xin to its board of directors, as part of a new chapter for the rapidly expanding company which will also see Zhang’s New York-based film production and financing group Closer Media become an investor in Mubi.

A billionaire entrepreneur, Zhang co-founded Closer Media and previously co-founded Soho China, a construction giant in Beijing and Shanghai known for its iconic projects designed by leading architects from around the world. She left the company in 2022 and partnered with William Horberg, a veteran producer whose credits include “The Queen’s Gambit” and “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” to break into the media world.

A patron of the arts, Zhang also serves as a Trustee of MoMA, and is a member of both the Harvard Global Advisory Council and Asia Business Council.

Actor John Amos, the star of movies such as ‘Coming to America,’ ‘Roots’ and many more has passed away at the age of 84.

The actor’s son, Kelly Christopher Amos announced the sad news in a statement:

They join the previously announced Elle Fanning on the cast. Keough and Turner come on board to replace Kristen Stewart and Josh O’Connor.

Aïnouz is directing from a script by Efthimis Filippou. Viola Fügen and Michael Weber are producing for The Match Factory, which is also handling worldwide sales for the film.

UK arthouse cinema chain Curzon has said it is “business as usual” and expansion plans are ongoing despite an auction date being set for properties owned by Charles Cohen’s Cohen Realty Enterprises.

A New York State Supreme Court judge has set an auction date of November 8 for the sale of the company’s properties, which were put up as collateral for $534m in loans, and include UK cinema chain Curzon and the Landmark circuit in the US, as well as a hotel, office space and design centre.

The British Film Institute (BFI) has issued a further 11 awards through the UK Global Screen Fund (Ukgsf), including Karim Aïnouz’s Rosebushpruning, Irish football story Saipan, starring Steve Coogan, and The Bureau-produced Moroccan co-production Behind The Palm Trees.

Rosebushpruning is the next feature from Brazilian director Aïnouz. It is a contemporary adaptation of Marco Bellocchio’s Fists In The Pocket, with Elle Fanning attached to star.

Producers are Kavac Film, The Match Factory and Surfilm, with CryBaby the minority UK producer on the project. Fremantle’s Italy-based The Apartment is on board as a co-producer, and Mubi is one of the backers.

Shot between his directing Alicia Vikander in “Firebrand” and Kristen Stewart in “Rosebushpruning,” “Motel Destino,” which bows in Cannes Competition on May 22, can be seen as a return by Brazil’s now most international director to his Brazilian roots.

This axis between international and local, plays out in “Motel Destino” and Aïnouz insists, in now his whole career.

An erotic thriller, “Motel Destino” turns on Dayana, the young wife of a roadside sex hotel owner who seduces on-the-run minor mobster Heraldo for great sex. But she soon conceives the idea of his helping her to kill her terrifyingly abusive older husband.

“I was really interested in a kind of Brazilian interpretation of melodrama and noir cinema, how to take genre, which begins in Hollywood, and appropriate it make it local and ours,” Aïnouz tells Variety.

“Motel Destino” is melodrama “in the sense these characters that are trying to survive, by any means.

Swedish director Ruben Östlund, who won Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or for “The Square” and “Triangle of Sadness,” was among the guests at the German Films and Medienboard Reception on May 18 in the garden of the Mondrian Hotel in Cannes.

Östlund, who is in the Riviera resort to promote his latest production, “The Entertainment System Is Down,” was accompanied by Philippe Bober of Coproduction Office, one of the film’s producers, and Erik Hemmendorf of Plattform Produktion, Östlund’s Swedish producer. (They are pictured above.)

German Films, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, was represented at the event by managing director Simone Baumann, and Medienboard, which is a film fund for the Berlin-Brandenburg region, was represented by its CEO Kirsten Niehuus. Variety was the media partner for the reception.

Fremantle’s Rome-based company The Apartment has boarded Karim Aïnouz’s next feature Rosebushpruning in partnership with The Match Factory, Mubi, Kavac Film and Rai Cinema.

It marks the first big film announcement for The Apartment since the arrival of Annamaria Morelli as its CEO in February, following the departure of founder Lorenzo Mieli.

Karim Aïnouz’s “Motel Destino,” which began filming last week, has eroticism, a recurring element in his films, as the backdrop. The Match Factory is selling the international rights.

His eighth fiction feature marks a return to the director’s Brazilian roots after having shot his first English-language production, “Firebrand,” starring Alicia Vikander and Jude Law, which played in competition at the Cannes Film Festival this year. Aïnouz won the Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes in 2019 for “Invisible Life.”
