Apparently set in America despite the characters’ British accents, the film opens with a condemned criminal making their escape from custody and heading for a cave in the woods where they don a familiar looking mask in preparation for the arrival of some victims.

They don’t have long to wait before Kate and her friends Judith, Alex, Dianne (Alina Varakuta; Whisper in the Dark) and Susie arrive to celebrate Kate’s 21st birthday.

Mountain Shark opens with a couple wandering along a path in the hills when they stumble across a body with a small bloodstain on it. The only clues as to what happened are a shark’s tooth and a strange metal device on the corpse. That’s enough to send them running, although once we see the CGI fin slicing through the ground, we know they’re doomed.

That is both an exciting and problematic development for Dr. Eric Nesbitt and Major Jennifer Hawkes (Angela Wilding). Exciting in that the creature they created is still alive, problematic in the fact that it’s out of control and needs to be killed without compromising the project’s secrecy. Horror versions of fairy tales, such as Snow White: A Tale of Terror with Sigourney Weaver and Sam Neil, for example, have been around for quite a while. And now the current trend of turning kid’s stories and nursery rhymes into horror films has carried over to them. It makes sense, they’re filled with witches, ghosts and in their original versions tended to be pretty grim and bloody moments such as Cinderella’s stepsisters cutting off their toes to try and get their foot in the glass slipper. And that brings us to Cinderella’s Revenge.

It certainly opens on an appropriately nasty note as Katherine frames her husband for the theft of the king’s jewels and has him killed for the bounty.

It seems like every other week there’s a new horror release based on some classic literary character. Whether it’s Pinocchio or Winnie the Pooh, there doesn’t seem to be a sign of them slowing down. And this time their sights are on Cinderella. I’m sure you can imagine all the ways that classic tale can be given a horror slant, with Cinderella’s awful treatment by her stepfamily. The movie itself has some fun moments (you can check out my review Here) but the real highlight is Natasha Henstridge as the Fairy Godmother. She relishes every moment of screen time and looks to be having a blast. So I was excited to be able to talk to her about the part.

The fairy tale-inspired horror film Cinderella’s Revenge just reached theatres a few days ago and another Cinderella horror film called Cinderella’s Curse is right around the corner. Now we can add a third project to the list of movies that put a horror twist on the classic fairy tale: director Emilie Blichfeldt’s feature debut The Ugly Stepsister.

Variety reports that Memento International will be presenting this horror comedy to potential distributors at the upcoming Cannes Film Market. The film is said to be a gory, daring, and unexpected take on the world-famous tale, seen through the eyes of the Cinderella’s stepsister, Elvira. Review: Everyone knows what they’re in for when it comes to these movies at this point, right? I don’t need to lay out the schpeal about public domain horror? Good, because it seems as though these films are here to stay. And in instances like this, I kind of get it. A twisted take on a tale that’s been told a thousand times? In the wake of horror movie Cinderella’s Revenge hitting theaters over the weekend, Variety reports that a horror movie centered on Cinderella’s stepsister is also coming soon.

The feature debut of filmmaker Emilie Blichfeldt, the film is titled The Ugly Stepsister, and Variety reports that Memento International is kicking off sales in Cannes this May.

Variety details, “Combining comedy and horror, the film is a daring and unexpected take on the world-famous tale, seen through the eyes of the Cinderella’s stepsister, Elvira.

“The gory film follows Elvira as she battles to compete with her insanely beautiful stepsister in a kingdom where beauty is a brutal business. She will go to any lengths to catch the prince’s eye.”

Natasha Henstridge plays Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother in Andy Edwards’ Cinderella’s Revenge. It’s a dark, twisted and blood-soaked take on the classic fairy tale, transforming Cinderella into a violent vigilante out for revenge against her wicked stepsisters.

Speaking with Eye For Film, Henstridge recalls daunting and fond memories of her experience making Species, and the joy of being a devil on the shoulder.

Paul Risker: How did you catch the acting bug?

Natasha Henstridge: Even before school, I was a ham. A lot of actors are very quiet and private people, that are out there in the world exploring through other characters. That was not me - I was the kid who was super-hyper, had a camera in someone's face all the time at Christmas functions, pretending I was a reporter or interviewer, wanting to get the nitty-gritty and understand who they were.

Next to nursey rhymes and small girls in frilly dresses, one of the things horror filmmakers are most keen to ‘subvert’ are fairy tales. From The Company Of Wolves and Deep In The Woods to Hunted and Final Girl, there are more Red Riding Hoods than you can shake a stick at, Hansel And Gretel feature in both US and South Korean versions, and The Curse Of Sleeping Beauty also makes its mark. Andy Edwards’ Cinderella’s Revenge is another offering in this tradition, mixing an appreciation of its story’s bloody roots with a gory modern twist.

Although Edwards directs, he didn’t write the script, and that shows in what is probably his weakest effort to date. It’s a film that doesn’t seem to know what it wants to be. For the first 45 minutes it plays it very straight, the only intentional squirm moment involving mutilations...

Fairy tales, in their undiluted forms, need no help when it comes to being creepy and horrifying. However, the Disneyfication of these classic stories makes it rather easy to forget their morbid beginnings. In the case of Cinderella, most modern adaptations of this quintessential rags-to-riches tale rarely bring up the violent aspects. All of that has been long removed in favor of safer elements, such as fairy godmothers and anthropomorphic mice. Yet, when reimagining the flaxen servant-turned-princess as someone who seeks “bloody vengeance,” Tom Jolliffe looked to the past; the Cinderella’s Revenge screenwriter found inspiration in the character’s gruesome roots.

The Brothers Grimm did not come up with Cinderella (or Aschenputtel) all on their own, but their familiar variation provides part of the source material for Cinderella’s Revenge. The classic tale of Cinderella gets a rated “R” horror makeover in the upcoming Cinderella’s Curse, and we’re exclusively debuting the trailer and poster art today.

ITN Studios will be releasing Cinderella’s Curse in theaters in 2024.

Pinocchio: Unstrung is the latest public domain horror movie announced by the team behind Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey and Bambi: The Reckoning. The movie will be a horror retelling of Pinocchio that is teased in the end credits of Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2. Additional details about the movie will be announced soon, including the cast and crew.

Pinocchio will be the character at the center of the latest public domain horror remake, Pinocchio: Unstrung. The version of Pinocchio that is perhaps the best known is the 1940 animated feature, which is the second movie in the Disney animated canon following their debut feature Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. However, the Disney movie is itself based on the 1883 Carlo Collodi children's book The Adventures of Pinocchio, which is in the public domain.
