- A charming film about a terrible murder. Etta helps ghosts find peace before crossing over but can she also help her friend get justice after a heinous crime? This drama comedy addresses serious issues with a whole lot of heart and humour.
- Etta runs a half-way house helping newly deceased people identify the one last thing they need to do before they can cross over. When her best friend arrives in need, she must juggle her responsibilities to her clients and help her friend before her interfering boss catches her.
- Etta takes a new job running a half-way house between life and death and reporting to her boss the angel Agnes.
She helps dead people identify the one last thing they need to do before they can cross over and she manages this with polite, empathetic professionalism.
One day four tricky guests arrive: Terry is the first, and he is sure he needs to visit the Ouse Valley Viaduct which inspired his building career as his one last thing. When Lucy arrives, she has no idea what she must do; Martha is equally unsure and Abdul is certain there is nothing.
While Etta settles her guests in, her best friend Olivia arrives unexpectedly and is very interested to work out exactly what Etta's job is. She begs Etta to let her stay as she is all alone. Agnes however, tells Etta to move her on and reminds her that the rules say no friends or family are allowed in the house.
Etta overhears Olivia talking to Martha about their time together at university and decides to let Olivia stay. Martha talks about her career as a frustrated artist, commercially successful but not recognised by the art establishment.
That evening, Abdul attempts to cross over but is rejected as he has not found his one last thing. Disappointed, he describes how much he misses his wife who died many years before and how after her death, he focussed exclusively on his job. Olivia now understands the nature of Etta's job and is amazed.
The following day while Etta is helping Lucy choose a new outfit, Olivia sees a scary hooded man lurking outside. Lucy keeps seeing a child's teddy around the house.
At the same time Mildred and David, two emergency cases arrive. Mildred died suddenly in a WW2 bombing raid and unaware she was dead missed her deadline for crossing over. Accordingly she became tethered to David, the last person to meet her while she was alive. On his death she can cross over. Mildred has become unhinged by the wait and Olivia is strangely troubled by this.
After moving Mildred and David on Etta decides to take action to help Olivia, afraid she will become like Mildred, she takes Olivia to a park and shows her the hooded man dumping her dead body. Olivia comes to realise she is also dead and is both angry and upset. She attempts to cross over leaving Etta full of guilt.
Agnes is furious with Etta for helping Olivia and they argue resulting in Etta being rude. When she returns to her job the guests are playing cricket in the family room. Olivia reappears saying she was rejected form the next place because she needs to find a thing to do before she can cross over.
Renunited and happy, the friends take Terry to Ouse Valley where he tells of a moment in his past where he nearly killed a man but was stopped by his cousins. He advises Olivia to get justice.
Agnes turns up at the house and tells Etta she must get a move on with the guests or risk losing her job. While Terry is comforting Etta they talk of his past and she helps him realise he would not have killed that man and he took his cousins with him to ensure this. - this release of doubt about his nature gives him peace.
Etta and the guests persuade Olivia to remember the night she was killed so she can identify her killer. She attempts to remember but is unable because she cannot see Etta kissing Jake her then boyfriend. Lucy realises the teddy is a toy she gave her son when he was adopted and asks to be taken to see how the boy turned out. Etta takes her to his house and they watch him and his wife through the window as Lucy tells of her love for his father and why she had to give the baby up. Seeing him happy gives her peace.
Etta calls Jake and asks for his help. He arrives as soon as he can and they talk about the plan to help Olivia. To placate Etta, Jake goes along with everything until he realises there are real ghosts are in the house and is unnerved.
Olivia remembers the night in the bar where the killer drugged her and sees his face. She doesn't know him so Martha draws a picture based on her description and Etta recognises who he is from that. Proud her picture will identify a killer and probably save lives, Martha finds peace.
Jake and Etta work out who the killer is using social media. Relieved the killer is identified, Olivia also finds peace.
Abdul asks if they can all cross over together, he has finally made friends and spent time mucking about with them rather than burying himself in work. This gives him peace too.
They cross over together leaving Etta and Jake to deliver pictures and information to Lucy's son, so he will report the killer to the police.
Free of the guilt she felt surrounding Olivia's death, Etta decides to re-enter the world and she and Jake go travelling together. Agnes offers them a job on their return.
