Zac Efron has accomplished a feat that Disney stars historically struggle with: making a smooth transition from teen idol to adult actor. For a decade and counting, Efron's name has been nearly synonymous with the word "heartthrob." Ask someone who their celebrity crush is, and there's a good chance they'll name the "High School Musical" alum. But over the last 17 years, Efron has charted a steady and increasingly impressive path for himself in the film industry, proving he's here to stay.
Efron has carved out a niche that suits his talents, starring in primarily comedies and musicals, and while his catalog includes plenty of films that weren't critical or commercial hits, his talent shines through regardless. Further, with starring roles in dramas like "Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile" and "The Iron Claw," Efron is currently making a major transition to serious, dramatic work. It's a challenge he's proven he can handle.

Just as it’s easy to imagine “The Hangover” being transformed, with relatively minor script tinkering, into a deadly serious film noir, one can envision an early draft of “Vacation Friends” serving as the blueprint for a paranoid thriller about vacationers who discover much too late that their new acquaintances are aggressively chummy for all the wrong reasons.
Indeed, there is a teasing hint in an early scene of director Clay Tarver’s comedy that at least one of those acquaintances may have sinister ulterior motives. And that impression is shrewdly enhanced by the inspired casting of Jon Cena, a superstar WWE grappler who’s proven capable of suggesting dark undercurrents — or, in the case of the recent “F9,” raising those currents to flood level — even when he’s demonstrating his comic chops.
But no: There’s no tonal switcheroo comparable to Jonathan Demme’s “Something Wild” here. Truth to tell,...

When filmmaker Lawrence Michael Levine gave the script for “Black Bear” to Aubrey Plaza, it included one hell of a direction in its final act: the leading lady “breaks down and gives the best performance that anyone has ever seen ever.” No pressure.
“I had this moment before we started shooting, where I just felt like, ‘This is going to be really hard and fucked up,'” Plaza said during a recent interview with IndieWire. “But there was something in me that felt like I needed to dive off the deep end. If the movie had been about anything else, I don’t know if I would have been able to put myself through that. It was too much for me to pass up. I just had to do it.”

Gabourey Sidibe and Anna Kendrick were both first time Oscar nominees at the Academy Awards in 2010. Sidibe was in the running for Best Actress thanks to her acclaimed breakout role in Lee Daniels’ “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire,” while Kendrick was in contention for Best Supporting Actress along with co-star Vera Farmiga for Jason Reitman’s “Up in the Air.” Both of these movies were up for Best Picture and Best Director, losing to “The Hurt Locker” and Kathryn Bigelow. Neither Sidibe nor Kendrick won Oscars, but Sidibe says Hollywood embraced one of them more than the other.
In a new interview with Collider to mark the opening of her horror movie “Antebellum,” Sidibe opened up about her life and career in the 10 years following her Oscar nomination. While Sidibe is grateful to be a working actress a decade after “Precious,” she’s aware Hollywood didn’t...

When I first saw that Zac Efron was the star of a new Netflix original series titled Down to Earth, I assumed it would be showcasing an almost gap year style adventure with Zac travelling around doing exciting things but I couldn’t have been more wrong! In this show, Zac uses his fame, status and even looks to help promote important issues to help combat global issues such as poverty, global warming and dealing with natural disasters.
Zac Efron has become famous in recent years for being a very attractive man, so to have him starring in this serious programme was an interesting choice. I was somewhat frustrated when I discovered a plethora of posts online talking about Zac’s looks in the show despite the focus being on environmental issues but I suppose if people tune into Down To Earth for the eye candy and end up staying for the environmental themes,...

Studio 8 has hired Jake Szymanski to direct an action comedy based on journalist Hudson Morgan’s misadventures in search of buried treasure in the Rocky Mountains.
In 2010, Forrest Fenn, an art dealer in New Mexico, announced he had buried a cache of gold and jewels in the Rocky Mountains — setting off a treasure hunt that attracted thousands. Last month, Fenn announced that a man who wished to remain anonymous had discovered the chest.
Morgan, a journalist turned comedy writer, will write the screenplay roughly based on his own experience in which a group of millennials set out after the treasure after their best friend disappears. That led to shouting matches, natural hazards, close calls with grizzlies, leaving the group with new appreciation for life, friendship and bear spray.
Studio 8’s Jeff Robinov, Guy Danella and John Graham will produce the film. The project is described as “The Goonies” meets “The Hangover.

Adam Devine is heading to Quibi with a lot of Bad Ideas. The Righteous Gemstones star is set to headline Bad Ideas with Adam Devine, a wacky celebrity reality series for the short-form video platform, from Mak Pictures.
A few examples. Devine mending an underwater fence in piranha infested waters? Not a good idea. Devine acting as human chum to attract the piranhas while someone else mends the fence? Now that’s a Really Bad Idea.
Bad Ideas with Adam Devine (Wt) is Devine’s twisted take on an adventure series. In each episode, he and a famous actor or comedian will travel to a new location in search of adventures that are already inherently dangerous – only they’ll add their own extra special sauce to ensure they are truly terrible choices.
Entering a chili pepper eating contest with the most scorching peppers on earth… when you don’t like spicy food?...

“Jexi,” which IndieWire can now confirm is the title of a real movie that’s actually playing in theaters and everything, begins with a somewhat intriguing premise: What if Spike Jonze’s “her” had been made for the lowest common denominator? What if it hadn’t been a beloved softboy romance about digital era dislocation, but rather a slapdash comedy about incels (they’re having a moment!) that’s only funny scene featured Wanda Sykes unfavorably comparing smartphone users to crackheads? What if it hadn’t cast Scarlett Johansson as the voice of a sweet A.I. who struggled to balance fragile human emotions with the infinitude of cyberspace, but gone with Rose Byrne as the voice of a cruel, Siri-cold virtual assistant who constantly tormented her user about how ugly his dick looked? See, it’s somewhat intriguing!

It was another crazy rich weekend for Warner Bros.'s Crazy Rich Asians, which dropped just 5.7% in its second weekend based on estimates, and if last weekend's performance is any indication, don't be surprised to see that weekend number climb once actuals are received on Monday afternoon. As for the weekend's new wide releases, both The Happytime Murders and A.X.L. struggled, though Sony's limited release of Searching delivered a chart-topping per theater average in limited release, in advance of going wide next weekend. With an impressive $25 million, WB's Crazy Rich Asians dropped just 5.7% compared to its opening weekend, easily remaining the #1 film at the weekend box office. The film's domestic gross now totals over $76 million after just 12 days in release, on its way to what looks like it could be a $150+ million domestic run. The film's second weekend drop is one of the smallest of all-time...

Update (4:15 p.m. Et): HBO has released the following statement in reaction to Wetterlund’s claims: “While this is the first time we have heard Alice Wetterlund comment on her experiences on “Silicon Valley,” we are disappointed to learn of her concerns. HBO and the producers have always taken very seriously our responsibility to create a welcoming and congenial environment for everyone who works on the show.”
Earlier: Alice Wetterlund appeared on HBO’s “Silicon Valley” during its second and third seasons as computer engineer and coder Carla Walton, which gave her the opportunity to share the screen with cast members Kumail Nanjiani, Thomas Middleditch, and T.J. Miller, among others. The actress revealed on Twitter her time on the “Silicon Valley” set wasn’t always enjoyable (via Vulture). Wetterlund said Miller acted like a bully and made the experience of working on “Silicon Valley” feel like a nightmare.

Adam Devine is about to get, well, divine.
The actor and comedian has signed on for a lead role in the recently-ordered HBO comedy pilot “The Righteous Gemstones.” He will star opposite previously announced cast members Danny McBride, John Goodman, and Edi Patterson. The series tells the story of a world famous televangelist family with a long tradition of deviance, greed, and charitable work, all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Devine will play Kelvin Gemstone, the youngest son of Eli (Goodman) and Amy Leigh. Described as “the edgy one,” he’s caught in the middle of the giant personalities that are Jesse (McBride) and Judy Gemstone (Patterson) and has branded himself an outsider to the church, feeling his methods are too hardcore for mainstream religion. Kelvin doesn’t have bigger ambitions for the head seat at the table but focuses his efforts on the eradication of Satan...

Chicago – One of the surprise hits of 2017 was a film based on a true life courtship incident, that the now husband and wife – Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon – fashioned into a comedy. “The Big Sick” is nominated for Best Original Screenplay, and the duo behind it talked to HollywoodChicago.com last summer.
“The Big Sick” is about Chicago stand-up comedian Kumail (Nanjiani, portraying a version of himself) who encounters a heckler named Emily (Zoe Kazan). A relationship blossoms, even though it is against the traditions of his Americanized Pakistani family, who insist that Kumail must marry a Muslim woman… leading to Emily and Kumail breaking up. Against this background, Emily then gets seriously ill, falling into a coma. Kumail must re-connect with her while she is in this state, and deal with her parents Beth (Holly Hunter) and Terry (Ray Romano). The situation creates a more deeper understanding of relationship commitment and unity.

When Netflix announced that they were going to be releasing 80 (yes, eighty) original films in 2018, it was hard to imagine how they could possibly handle that kind of volume. At a time when more traditional outfits like Disney and Warner Bros. are distributing huge movies in small doses, it seemed unfathomable that a studio would be able to put out more than one new movie per week (even a studio that didn’t always have to deal with pesky industry headaches like shipping DCPs and informing customers that their movies exist). But here we are in early February, and Netflix’s agenda is already seeming all too fathomable.
The crux of their strategy — the streaming giant’s ace in the hole — couldn’t be clearer: They’re just going to release the movies that nobody else would.
That idea seems to be the one thing that all of the recent Netflix Originals have in common,...
