As a superhero product, "The Boys" was clearly always supposed to be a part of a larger universe, and in a fun way, this show's existence is further commentary on the state of superhero entertainment. Luckily, though, this is not a show that is simply here to make some money for Amazon, but a show that actually provides some very cool knowledge and lays the groundwork for what will come in "The Boys" and the overall universe going forward, which is a cool little detail. And this episode certainly does a lot to prove the importance, including some cool twists and some even cooler crossovers.
This show has fared quite like "The Boys" in terms of its violence, and this finale doesn't shy away from going even further with it. There is some high-stakes action, combined with brutal moments, including a massacre that is pretty ruthless and doesn't leave anything to the imagination. It has been quite true to the flagship, but this especially felt like it belonged in the same breath as "The Boys." There is a true sense of climax to this episode, which just goes a long way of making this a worthwhile finale. The show has also been pushing these characters quite well, especially the character of Marie, who still feels like a complex case as this finale rolls over the screen. Her dealing with her powers is a great running thing, and she definitely finds interesting ways to use them here, which also ends in a very brutal clash with Cate. And the other characters also go through significant changes here, although I do feel like the writers could have been a little bit more consistent with both Cate and Sam, who are taken in a different direction here; a direction that felt kinda strange given the overall direction they've been on until now. There's obviously also a couple of intriguing cameos that fans will surely lose their marbles over, with more to come in the future. The show doesn't really feel like it has a definitive ending, but it is instead setting up a lot of things for future seasons, which is also exciting.
"Guardians of Godolkin" felt like a good mix of bold storytelling and shock value because of its brutal moments, while also setting up the future. The show is very unique, but it still feels very true to its flagship, and that opens the door for future crossovers that will make this show even more important.
