Harmony Korine began conceptualizing this after wanting to make a movie about "what comes after movies".
The film received a 10-minute standing ovation after its premiere at Venice Film Festival, where it screened out of competition, despite a flurry of walkouts. The premiere was not the first time "Aggro Dr1ft" prompted walkouts. At a press screening on Friday night, at least 20 people left during the film.
Harmony Korine acquired the infrared cameras used to shoot the film from NASA.
This is the first production under Harmony Korine's new EDGLRD banner.
