The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker star John Cena has signed on to play the lead in Matchbox, a live-action take on the classic Mattel car toyline.
Extraction director Sam Hargrave is set to helm the project for Apple Original Films, Skydance and Mattel Film. David Coggeshall (The Family Plan) and Jonathan Tropper (The Adam Project) penned the script.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but we assume the story will focus on... cars. We have no idea who Cena is playing, but we really hope it's a car. In all seriousness, this will most likely be a family-friendly action movie in the same vein as the Fast and Furious franchise, possibly with added fantastical elements.
Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger will produce, along with Robbie Brenner for Mattel Films. The project marks the latest collaboration between Skydance and Apple, and we also have The Gorge,...

Mattels Matchbox, an upcoming film based on the popular toy line of the same name, has found its first actor. It will be helmed by Extraction director Sam Hargrave, and will have a script penned by David Coggeshall (The Family Plan) and Jonathan Tropper (The Adam Project). The toy line Matchbox has an interesting lore. Automotive enthusiast Jack Odell designed the first car for his daughter, whose school only allowed toys that could fit in a matchbox, hence the clever name. The movie was first announced in early 2022.
Apple Original Films, Skydance, and Mattel Films, the studios behind Matchbox, have found their first actor for the film, The Hollywood Reporter says. Wrestler-turned-actor John Cena has signed on to the project. Details are still being kept under wraps, but this will mark the first time Matchbox has been developed into a movie. Another toy car brand from Mattel, Hot Wheels, also...

Mattel Films (“Barbie”) has greenlit a live-action “Matchbox” movie, based on the die-cast car toy line, to be directed by Sam Hargrave (“Extraction”), starring John Cena (“Peacemaker”):
“Matchbox”, created by automotive expert Jack Odell for Lesney Products in 1953, was purchased in 1997 by “Hot Wheels” competitor Mattel, Inc.
The brand was given its name because original die-cast ‘Matchbox’ vehicles were sold in boxes similar to those in which matches were sold.
The brand grew to encompass a broad range of toys, including larger scale die-cast models, plastic model kits, slot car racing and action figures.

John Cena is going from Universal’s Fast & Furious franchise to Apple’s Matchbox, a live-action movie from Skydance and Mattel Films based on the iconic toy brand. While John Cena gets behind the wheel to lead the film, Extraction helmer Sam Hargrave sits shotgun to direct based on a screenplay by David Coggeshall and Jonathan Tropper.
Matchbox was invented in 1953 by automotive expert and enthusiast Jack Odell, who was asked to solve a problem for his daughter. She could bring any toy to school if it fit inside a matchbox. After showing off her father’s miniature invention to school, kids coveted the item and wanted one of their own. As the Matchbox die-cast vehicle toy line grew, Mattel began to diversify the makes and models of cars in the collection. Amazingly, analysts say a Matchbox car sells two cars every second somewhere around the globe.

When his daughter’s school friends too began clamouring for a “matchbox car,” an iconic brand was born. The high standards of authenticity for Matchbox die-cast cars have driven the brand for over 70 years and generations of fans.
