Welcome to another look back at the biggest hits of 2023. Today, we’ll look through the documentaries and docu-series that picked up the most points in the Netflix top 10s throughout the year.
This list is compiled with data from FlixPatrol, which tracks the daily top 10s in over 90 countries globally. Their data provides a daily snapshot of what’s trending in the TV and movie list by providing points to each title that features. Although we love their data, it’s neither perfect nor an exact measurement of viewership. Netflix does provide its own data on this front, but it doesn’t allow us to paint a big picture of what was watched most in 2023 as it stands.
Because documentaries feature in the movie lists and docu-series feature in the TV list, we’ll split them separately. We’ll have a look at the documentaries and docu-series to do best globally first,...

The real story surrounding Netflix's latest true crime offering is tailor-made for tabloid fodder. Directed by Jorge Torregrossa and starring Úrsula Corberó ("Money Heist"), "Burning Body" serves as yet another cautionary tale about the tangled web we weave when secret love affairs, ghastly intrigue, and unthinkable acts of violence collide.
Based on one of Spain's most chilling murder cases referred to by the local press as "el Crimen de la Guardia Urbana" (the crime of the Urban Guard), the brutal killing of a police officer caused a media frenzy. On May 4, 2017, the remains of Officer Pedro Rodriguez were found among the ash of a torched automobile that had been completely engulfed in flames. It looked like someone had gone to great lengths to ensure that there was no physical evidence, a clear sign that the person or persons in question knew what they were doing. The only identifying signs...

The story of Rosa Peral and the perplexing murder of her boyfriend, Pedro Rodriguez, is one of the most puzzling cases in Spanish criminal history. This 2017 murder case has been examined from two unique perspectives, providing us with contrasting views of the crime and passion involved. On one side, we have the thrilling Netflix series Burning Body, a fictional take on the events surrounding Pedro’s demise, portraying Rosa as the villain and the main culprit behind Pedro’s murder. Conversely, we find the Netflix documentary Rosa Peral’s Tapes, which offers a more factual exploration of the case, allowing us to hear Rosa Peral’s side of the story for the first time. Both narratives revolve around the discovery of Pedro’s remains inside a car near the Foix reservoir, but no concrete proof strongly indicates Rosa’s involvement in the case.

Netflix has just released an eight-part crime drama called Burning Body, inspired by the true events of the 2017 murder case of Pedro Rodriguez in Barcelona. Although the show is heavily inspired by true events and stays almost loyal to the key figures in the case, much of the storyline is fictionalized for dramatic purposes. The series presents a surprising twist, portraying Rosa Peral as a villain in stark contrast to the sympathy she evokes in the documentary Rosa Peral’s Tapes, released on the same day on Netflix.
The documentary had a clear purpose: to give Rosa Peral a chance to tell her side of the story and maybe show that she wasn’t guilty. It wanted to show, how her case was really complicated and how society often judges women unfairly in the legal system. Moreover, the documentary wanted to highlight, how someone’s personal life sometimes gets more attention than real evidence in court.

The Netflix original Spanish documentary Las Cintas de Rosa Peral or Rosa Peral’s Tapes revolves around the chilling murder case of Pedro Rodríguez, a police officer in the Barcelona Police Department. Pedro’s murder case caused a significant stir, after his colleague and partner, Rosa Peral, along with her former boyfriend, Albert Lopez, were convicted of his murder. However, they had consistently pointed the finger at each other since their arrest. Now, for the first time, Rosa Peral has broken her silence by agreeing to give a revealing interview to the documentary makers, shedding light on her side of the story in a desperate bid to prove her innocence. Yet, as the investigation unfolds, the conflicting evidence only serves to deepen the mystery surrounding this perplexing case. It leaves many questions unanswered about Rosa’s involvement and the true events that led to Pedro’s tragic end.
