Last we had reported that Shraddha Kapoor had been roped in to feature as the lead actress in Mohit Suri's film Half Girlfriend opposite Arjun Kapoor. Well now we hear that the actress from Mere Dad Ki Maruti and Sonali Cable, Rhea Chakraborty has also been roped in for the film. The film Half Girlfriend is based on Chetan Bhagat's coming-of-age novel that tells the love story of a Bihari boy and an upper society girl. Based on the backdrop of how English defines a class system, it also talks about Madhav who wants a relationship with the high society, urban and English speaking Riya, but the girl is not interested in commitment. Hence, she decides to be his half girlfriend. Though the first schedule of the film has already been completed in New Delhi, Rhea is said to join the cast in the next schedule.

2014 has truly been a year of surprises. The audiences surprised the film makers by accepting movies that perhaps 5 years ago they wouldn’t have, film makers surprised the audiences by challenging the norms of Indian cinema and taking risks with their story telling and above all, actors surprised everyone by delivering performances that we wouldn’t have pegged them to deliver. Not all of these performances were lead performances in their individual films but they were performances that stood out of the entire film for us.

Alia Bhatt – Highway

In a recent interview Alia Bhatt confessed that after Student of the Year she was rather disappointed because no one was simply talking about her! Comments were restricted to ‘fresh’ and ‘pleasant’ and never remotely even referring to her actual performance. So she decided in 2014 she would ensure we talk about her and only her.

Exploring and experimenting in Bollywood, Ali Fazal was last seen in Sonali Cable which released last week. The actor, who has even done a cameo in Fast & Furious 7, is now getting prepared for a black comedy titled Baa Baa Black Sheep.

The script for the film is written and directed by Vishwaas Pandya, son of Jayendra Pandya who has produced popular films like Namak Haram starring Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan among others. Excited about working with Ali Fazal, Pandya mentioned that he required a very talented actor who can play the role of a guy who is innocent and has style at the same time. Ali Fazal's character name in the film will be Baba.

The other details including the leading lady are yet to be finalized. Baa Baa Black Sheep also stars Anupam Kher and Annu Kapoor in prominent roles and it is slated to go on floor in December.

When a script fights the battle amongst hundreds more and finally makes it onto the big screen you know that it must be special. Charudutt Acharya’s Sonali Cable is one such script which was chosen at the Mumbai Mantra-Sundance Institute Screenwriters Lab 2012. What intrigues even more is the production house backing the film, one that is known for taking quite the creative risks in recent times and the young versatile cast.

Sonali Cable at heart is your classic David versus Goliath storyline. The small underdog who is wronged by the big guy finally emerges and triumphs against all odds. However, that is not to say Sonali Cable doesn’t excite and surprise. It does plenty of that! Firstly, it grabs your attention for being the David vs Goliath story that features a girl as its hero. Then there are the endearing and not-so-endearing yet extremely riveting characters the said hero is surrounded by.

The makers of Sonali Cable have made a series of short videos that are going viral on the internet, with names like ‘Klpd’, ‘Kissing Burji’, ‘Buffering’… and what not… these videos are getting viewed in lakhs all across the globe, an innovative promotion, and we are certainly impressed with their thinking.

When asked Rohan Sippy, the producer of the film how this whole thing came about, he said, “We wanted to people to get what the film is about, like we say in Sonali Cable,’Sonali kabhi offline nahi jati!’ we wanted that to come across in these videos. I think Amritpal Singh Bindra and Anand Tiwari who have made these videos have done a fabulous job!”

Charudutt Acharya, whose directorial debut Sonali Cable is all set to hit the silver screen is brimming with excitement for not only it is his first project, it is also a film he has written! Thanking his stars for the exceptional team, Acharya cannot help but feel lucky about the brilliant actors he roped in for his first film. In fact the director says he has become a fan of his lead pairs, Ali Fazal and Rhea Chakraborty, especially about leading lady, he says, “Rhea is young, when I saw her at the audition I felt her raw energy which I personally liked about her. Before starting the shoot of the film, I kept workshops for 6 weeks. During the workshops we used to rehearse each scene day and night. I am glad that during the workshop each actor contributed their 100%, no doubt there was lot of time invested but no one ever complained about it.

Director-Producer Rohan Sippy’s Dum Maaro Dum and Nautanki Saala’s writer Charudutt Acharya, will have his directorial debut with Sonali Cable. The one thing that makes him confident is the fact that he has first-hand seen the Internet Broadband war and has converted that experience into his first directorial venture.

While talking about this, director says, “If I say Sonali Cable is my story, it won’t be wrong. Seven – eight years ago when I used to write for television, I had to send a story on urgent basis anyhow, when I was done with story and was about to send that time my internet connection failed. This happened during the time when our cell phones did not have internet and it was late at night, no cyber cafes were open. I was worried but that time I remembered an 18 years old girl’s number who used to work for that internet service provider.

Sonali Cable was set to release on big screen on October 10, but now it has been pushed to October 17. Rohan wants his lead actress Rhea to promote the film for some more time; hence the date of release was changed. But unfortunately it turns out that Yash Raj Films, which manages Rhea’s work, has not allotted Rhea’s dates to the filmmaker.

A inside source close of the filmmaker says, “Yrf was informed in advance about this possible change of date and in any case, small budget films need to be promoted. So we need Rhea’s dates but Yrf has not given her dates for a week. It’s unfortunate that they are doing this with regards to their talent working for another producer.”

Sonali Cable is writer-director Charudatt Acharya’s maiden voyage, being one of the 8 scripts selected for Mumbai Mantra-Sundance Institute Screenwriters Lab 2012. It stars Rhea Chakraborty (Meri Dad Ki Maruti), Ali Fazal (Bobby Jasoos) and Anupum Kher (A Wednesday) in pivotal roles. It also marks the debut of Dance India Dance finalist Raghav Juyal.

The soundtrack features compositions from various music directors including Raghav Sachar (‘Kabul Fiza’) and Mike McCleary (Nautanki Sala).

Sonali Cable is produced under the banner of Ramesh and Rohan Sippy and hits cinemas 10 October 2014.

Reality television's wonder-dancer Raghav Juyal who came into huge success as one of India's best dancer after he was discovered on Dance India Dance, apparently assaulted Sudheer Palsane, the cinematographer of the film Sonali Cable, during the shooting of a promotional music video.

An eyewitness from the location of the shooting says, "We don't really know what the provocation was. Raghav was there to shoot a music-video for Sonali Cable. He is a fantastic dancer and a really cool guy, not known to lose his temper. We don't know what happened to him that day. But suddenly we saw him lunge for Sudheer and rain blows on the guy. Before we could rush to rescue Sudheer, damage had already been done."

Sudheer had to be rushed to a nearby hospital.

No assault charges were pressed against Raghav, and the matter was hushed up.

While shooting for ‘Ek Mulaqat’ song, Ramesh Sippy had dropped by the sets of Sonali Cable. It was late evening and the film’s lead pair, Rhea Chakraborty and Ali Fazal, were shooting a lovemaking scene that takes place in the middle of a romantic track.”Their nervousness was visible on camera and dad took them and the director Charu (Charudutt Acharya) to the makeup van and, moment by moment, explained the choreography of hands, eyes and body language that would make the scene sensual and memorable,” recalls Rohan Sippy, co-producer of the film.

He further recollects, “With such expert guidance from him, the actors were able to pull off the scene and this time chemistry was great.” Rohan quipped that his dad explained how to draw out the moment of intimacy, the transitory touches, which made it all the more exciting and adoring.

“I don’t want to spark off an unnecessary controversy.

One has heard of kissing for love. But kissing for revenge? That's a new one... And the beneficiary was that lucky sod called Ali Fazal.

To go back a bit, Rhea Chakraborty the leading lady of Sonali Cable was in a relationship with Aditya Roy Kapoor when she signed the film. She had strictly said no to all the kissing scenes in the script.

Says a source close to the project, "When Rhea began working in Sonali Cable she was seeing Aditya Roy Kapoor and she wanted all the kissing scenes to be scrapped from the script. But as the shooting progressed she broke up with Aditya and began to thaw about the no-kissing clause."

Apparently, Rhea was in two minds about the kiss clause until she saw her ex-beau getting cozy with Shraddha Kapoor.

Ali is jubilant to be a part of Fast and Furious 7 which is slated for a 2014 release. It is believed that the 26-year-old has already shot his scenes with none other than Hollywood superstar Vin Diesel for the movie.
