- Spouses Henrik and Emilie Schultze rent Hotel Paradis in a small, poor fishing village on the coast. They cannot scrape together the rent money to be delivered in December to the place's owner, the rich miller Kleinsorg. Mrs. Schultze personally asks for a reprieve, but the miller does not grant a pardon, especially since Mrs. Schultze refuses to sleep with him. They must realize that they will soon lose the hotel and have to leave it with their young daughter, Rosa. It's close to Christmas when they are visited by the two landlubbers Tok-Greta and Fridolin. Tok-Greta predicts with her cards that the inn couple will soon receive a lot of money.
That same evening, a German ship runs aground and three men save themselves ashore, two sailors and a ship's commander. The sailors try to steal the chest the commander is carrying. Two shots ring out in the night, two shots that no one hears. The ship's captain arrives alone at the couple's hotel. The other two men never come.
The commander is murdered the same night by the host and his wife. The body is buried in the basement when the executioner comes to visit. The wife becomes very worried, but has to dance with the executioner and sing him a ballad.
It would have gone badly for the couple if a priest who secretly loved Mrs. Schultze testified falsely and gives her an alibi.
The couple leave for Germany and start a new movement supported by the stolen money. They become wealthy but are tormented by pangs of conscience, especially the wife. One day it is written in a Danish newspaper that a man's corpse was found buried in the basement of Hotel Paradise. The wife reads this and dies of a heart attack. The couple's daughter goes to the fishing village to research the whole thing. She enters the hotel and is careless with fire so the house catches fire. The father and son of the murdered, who have come there, save her from the flames. Haunted by his conscience, the father returns to the flames and shoots himself. Outside the flames, the two young ones can be seen.
