Robert Lopez is not only an Egot winner, but he’s also the youngest to reach it (at 39 years and 8 days old) and is the first to achieve a double Egot, having won each accolade twice. But there are some who feel his Egot ought to be asterisked because his two Emmys are Daytime Emmys, but Lopez can now shut those haters up in one fell swoop with double Primetime Emmy wins this year.
Shared with his wife Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Lopez nabbed two nominations for “WandaVision”: music and lyrics for “Agatha All Along” and main title theme music. These are his fourth and fifth Primetime Emmy bids; he previously lost the songwriting category for “Scrubs” in 2007, and “The Comedians” and the Oscars, both in 2015.
Lopez was never the favorite in those years — he lost to “Saturday Night Live’s” “Dick in a Box” and “Inside Amy Schumer’s” “Girl...

Elizabeth Taylor, who would have turned 89 on Feb. 27, lived multiple lives. She was a movie mega-star, a tabloid mega-celebrity (which are not always the same thing), an innovator in creating herself as a brand — and a tireless and effective philanthropist and activist.
She was adored, admired, denounced, scandal-ridden and unpredictable, and the public couldn’t get enough of her.
On screen, she was at her most breathtakingly beautiful in such 1950s and ‘60s films as “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” “Suddenly, Last Summer,” “Cleopatra” and “The Taming of the Shrew.” And in the 1966 “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf,” at age 34, she frumped herself up and gave a great performance, winning the second of two Oscars (after the 1960 “Butterfield 8”).
She also excelled in a wide array of films, like “Giant” (1956), “Raintree Country” (1958), “X, Y and Z” (1972), “Ash Wednesday”, and “The Mirror Crack’d” (1980), her last leading role on the big screen.

Cicely Tyson, the trailblazing actress died whose career spanned more than six decades, died Thursday afternoon, her manager Larry Thompson confirmed. She was 96.
From the start of her career, Tyson resolved to portray strong, positive, and realistic images of black women onscreen, and for many, she represented an enduring strength. Tyson received an Oscar nomination in 1973 for Martin Ritt’s drama Sounder (and was finally given an honorary Oscar in 2018), and became famous to a wider audience for her starring role in the 1974 TV movie The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman,...

Emmy- and Tony-winning actress Cicely Tyson, who distinguished herself in theater, film and television, died on Thursday afternoon. She was 96.
“I have managed Miss Tyson’s career for over 40 years, and each year was a privilege and blessing,” her manager, Larry Thompson, said in a statement. “Cicely thought of her new memoir as a Christmas tree decorated with all the ornaments of her personal and professional life. Today she placed the last ornament, a Star, on top of the tree.”
Her memoir “Just As I Am” was published on Tuesday.
Tyson broke into movies with the 1959 Harry Belafonte film “Odds Against Tomorrow,” followed by “The Comedians,” “The Last Angry Man,” “A Man Called Adam” and “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter.” Refusing to participate in the blaxploitation movies that became popular in the late ’60s, she waited until 1972 to return to the screen in the drama “Sounder,” which captured several...

Bob Dylan's filmography might not be as long or as revered as other popular musicians who have dipped their toes in cinema; but when he does make a film, it's something to watch. The second of the two feature films that he's written, Masked and Anonymous, is getting a blu ray release from Shout Factory this month. It's a strange and moody film that feels like a ballad and moves like theatre, with an impressive list of stars centering around the presence of America's great songwriter, in a story that feels oddly prescient despite being made nearly twenty years ago. This was Larry Charles' feature directorial debut; it might seem odd that the future director of Borat, The Comedians, and several episodes of Curb Your...

It was originally reported the show was in development in December. The classic 1989s buddy cop comedy feature Turner & Hooch is getting a TV series treatment for Disney+. I have learned that the Disney streaming platform is working on a Turner & Hooch TV series adaptation from Burn Notice creator Matt Nix and 20th Century Fox TV where Nix is under an overall deal.
Details about the series are scarce, but it is believed to be keeping the premise of the original movie, which starred Tom Hanks, and also revolves around a police detective and his dog, I hear. The TV series had been in the works for awhile. It has been gathering momentum recently, and I hear it is heating up for a green light. Reps for Disney+ and 20th TV would not comment.

Bowling Green State University has removed actress Lillian Gish’s name from a campus theater because of her part in D.W. Griffith’s Birth of a Nation.
Gish starred in the 1915 silent film, which was adapted from a novel and play, The Clansman. It is considered a landmark of film history, with many firsts – first close-up, fade-outs, and the longest film made to that point. However, it is full of racist imagery and plot lines, and venerates the Ku Klux Klan, who ride in to save the day.
Students at Bowling Green requested the change. After a study, it was agreed to change the name.
But this week, such stars as James Earl Jones, Helen Mirren, Martin Scorsese and several leading film scholars released an open letter calling for Bowling Green to retain Gish’s name on the theater. She shared billing with her sister on the theater name. Both were Ohio natives,...

In a TV world where some services offer up brand new TV shows every week, it’s all the more impressive when a network can maintain quality with only a handful of new series each calendar year. One such channel? FX, which for the better part of the last 20 years, has been a place that’s helped push the boundaries of what’s allowed and what’s successful on TV.
Particularly since 2002 (the year when two of the shows in this collection premiered), FX has become a force for compelling dramas, surprising comedies, and a few shows that proudly defy falling into either category. Not all their efforts have been critical or audience successes (for every “The Shield,” there’s bound to be an “Anger Management”), but there’s a certain consistency to the FX banner that’s come without having a particular house style.
So which of these shows are most worthy of praise?...

In 2017, there’s a show for everyone, and typically that’s a good thing. There’s so much demand for fresh content and so many content providers looking to stand out, fresh stories from distinct voices populate an ever-diversifying television landscape. In other words, this is a world that could easily have room for a show where Jean-Claude Van Damme plays Jean-Claude Van Damme, a movie star who’s also a highly trained international spy.
But for as nutty as “Jean-Claude Van Johnson” sounds, its execution feels too familiar to earn its spot. Though the story-building in the pilot is clever enough to provide ample opportunity for good old-fashioned fun, too many easy jokes and half-baked movie homages keep the six-episode first season from fulfilling its potential as the sharp meta successor to “Episodes,” “The Comedians,” or even Van Damme’s 2008 film, “Jcvd.”
For starters, “Jean-Claude Van Johnson” has nothing to say about the industry,...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: If you could give one canceled show one extra season (if only to wrap things up in a better way), which would it be?
Daniel Fienberg (@TheFienPrint), The Hollywood Reporter
It wasn’t that we were watching “Hannibal” just to see Bryan Fuller and company get to the events of “Silence of the Lambs,” but that was sure a fun thing looming on the horizon. The “Manhunter”/”Red Dragon” arc was probably the show’s most conventional, but it was all the more intriguing for that odd disconnect, of a frequently told story going through the mind of one of TV’s most original storytellers and...

We'd like to forget all about the last attempt at a live-action Masters of The Universe movie. Sorry, Dolph! Great hair, though.
Welcome back to another edition of Fantasy Fridays, where two real-life best friends (Jeremy Scully and I, Mario-Francisco Robles) get together to cast/pitch our dream movies.
In the past, we've tackled everything from The Batman to the Universal Monsters.
This week, we turn our attention towards the long-gestating cinematic reboot of Masters of The Universe. Jeremy and I grew up on the classic 80s cartoon, and I had a ton of the old action figures. Yet even we knew, as children, that the 1987 movie starring Dolph Lundgren was crap. That's why we'd like to put our own spin on what the reboot should look/feel like.
Over the years, many filmmakers and various studios have tried and failed to get a Masters of The Universe movie off of the ground.

Honorable Mention: "The Comedians" Though we had the Billy Crystal and Josh Gad-starring FX comedy on our mid-year list of best shows — not just new shows, but best shows — the forces that be saw fit to cancel the low-rated, meta takedown of Hollywood. Because this list is designed to introduce fans to new shows they can catch up on now and keep watching in the new year, we couldn't include it in the official Top 10. In terms of new seasons debuting in 2015, though, "The Comedians" was easily one of the finest of them all. It's just no longer a new series. Rest in peace, guys. This year saw some long-running favorites close out their stories (farewell, “Mad Men”!) and some new series get axed too soon (“Hindsight,” anyone?). Regardless, here are five performances from ending shows that we’ll always treasure. Josh Gad, “The Comedians”Gad and Billy Crystal spent the first (and only) season of “The Comedians” trying not to have the show within their FX show canceled. So when FX announced that the real series was, indeed, canceled, the news felt like the meta joke taken to a logical extreme. After all, cutting close to the real-life bone was part and parcel of the show’s appeal, whether the joke was on “City Slickers” or Gad’s short-lived sitcom, “1600 Penn.” But while Crystal’s persona has been part of audience’s lives for years, it’s relative newcomer Gad who had the chance to gleefully dissect Hollywood narcissism, swinging for the fences as...

As evidenced over the past few years, television is no longer just a launching pad for prospective movie stars’ careers. On the contrary, many high-profile film actors have made the leap back to the small screen to take on roles that allow them to wholly flesh out characters and tackle meaty scenes that have become so much more prevalent in the TV landscape.
This migration has not gone unnoticed by the Emmy panelists, and many of those stars so well known for their work in film have garnered nominations (and wins) in the past few years. It is clear that since his passing, Roger Ebert has been revered, and I certainly agree with that as an overall sentiment. But I spent enough time with Roger to see a glimpse or two of that rowdy playful side that was an equally important part of his personality. He was, after all, the screenwriter of "Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls," and he was famous for his friendship with Russ Meyer. For those of you who were born in an era where you can simply download any extreme perversion you want in HD at any time, day or night, with your phone, you may not fully appreciate or understand what was special about the work that Meyer did as a director. He was a man with a very particular appetite, and it is distinctly possible he gave an entire generation of young men a rabid breast fetish. I am...
