This story goes through several time periods and locations: there is 10,000 B.C. - and 57 B.C. - and also 1805 A.D., during Bolivia's War of Independence.

The public flogging scene took two days of shooting and Amy Hesketh had to be naked most of that time, really tough because it was cold. The flogging itself was real. The sound of the whip on Amy's flesh was loud to make everybody squirm. Many a person realized that it was real, that she wasn't acting at all, that she was suffering. And this went on for hours, to have all the angles Jac Avila wanted and to make it look as good as humanly possible. Jac pull it off, pushing his actors like they were chess pieces, making them do the impossible and ending the last day past 8 pm, in the dark with a very bloodied Amy laying on the platform. When Amy finally took a good shower, Jac could see that all those whipping marks on her back and bottom were the real thing, sans the blood, of course.
