Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen knows the industry is “being much more bullish” about adult animation than when his popular programming block premiered in 2001 on Cartoon Network. It’s a noteworthy shift for Western audiences, who’ve spent decades watching mostly family sitcoms dominate the medium.
“Without people making animation synonymous with kids only, I don’t even know if we’d ever use the term ‘adult animation.’ It’s a term that’s in negation of a perception. Animation is not one thing. It’s a production method that allows for a lot of things that other production methods don’t allow for,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter. “There’s something secret about animation that allows it to last longer, travel more and mean more to people — for them to wear it as their identity a little easier — than other production methods.”

Amazon Freevee has given the greenlight to “Clean Slate,” a new comedy from Norman Lear’s Act III Productions, starring Laverne Cox and comedian George Wallace. The original comedy has been in development at Freevee since February 2021, back when the ad-supported streamer was known as IMDb TV.
“Clean Slate,” which comes from Cox, Wallace and Dan Ewen, centers on car wash owner Henry (Wallace), whose estranged child comes home to Alabama after 17 years. But he must do some soul searching as he comes to terms with the fact that his adult child is a trans woman, Desiree (Cox). There’s no word yet on an episodic order, when the series might shoot or an estimated premiere date.
Ewen serves as executive producer and writer on “Clean Slate,” and he has story credit along with Cox and Wallace. Cox will also serve as an executive producer on the show, while Wallace is a producer.

Kristen Bell has found her next TV project, where she has proven to be a guaranteed draw in popular comedies like “Veronica Mars” and “The Good Place.” Now Netflix is getting in on Bell’s massive audience appeal, and the streamer is giving Bell the chance to experiment with something a little darker.
Sporting a title so long it may be as hard to forget as it is to remember, “The Woman in the House Across the Street From the Girl in the Window” is billed as a “satirical slant on the psychological thriller” about a wine-loving woman who witnesses a murder. The first official trailer offers a glimpse of the unique tightrope the show attempts to walk and shows how suited Bell is to the macabre comedy.

Hugh Davidson has signed an overall deal with Warner Bros. Animation.
Under the deal, Davidson will develop, write, and produce animated projects for Wba across all platforms. The deal also allows for him to develop live-action projects for Wbtv.
“I have been at Warner Bros Animation for 10 years which in entertainment business years is about 100 years, so we finally decided to ‘make it official,'” Davidson said.
The first project under the new deal is “Keeping Up with the Joneses,” which has received a presentation order from HBO Max. In the series, an aging matriarch scrambles to keep up appearances in her wealthy, judgmental Texas neighborhood.
Davidson most recently served as executive producer and showrunner of the adult animated series “Mike Tyson Mysteries,” which concluded its fourth season on Adult Swim earlier this year.

There are a lot of popular streaming platforms to choose from, but Hulu has always stood alongside Netflix as one of the two essentials for households looking for diversity in content. In the past, they’ve been known for focusing more heavily on newer television content, while Netflix has always offered a larger selection of sought-after films. But now, it looks like Hulu’s June lineup is only going to continue the service’s recent trend of providing high quality movies to bring itself in line with their competitor.

Spliced together from interviews, establishing shots, and dramatic reenactments, its subjects’ homegrown aphorisms set against the forceful tinkling of the score, “The Eye Doesn’t Lie” might’ve been made by Errol Morris himself.
Inspired by “The Thin Blue Line,” the fourth episode of IFC’s inventive, erudite “Documentary Now!” — from the frenzied imaginations of director Rhys Thomas and “Saturday Night Live” alumni Fred Armisen, Bill Hader, and Seth Meyers — mimics the filmmaker’s work so precisely that it comes to resemble an X-ray, showing the bone structure of his distinctive style while (gently) poking fun at it. In this sense, to describe “Documentary Now!” as a parody is to undersell: It’s a wildly funny act of criticism, deconstructing the mechanics of nonfiction in an age defined by the slippage between “reality” and the real.
Starring Armisen and Hader in an ever-changing series of roles—in a pungent send-up of Vice Media, they even play three indistinguishable pairs of plaid-clad, ne’er-do-well correspondents on the trail of a Mexican drug kingpin — “Documentary Now!” is designed with an in-depth knowledge of the form, down to the title sequence. A clever nod to public television, replete with evolving logo, synthesized theme music, and Helen Mirren’s refined introductions, the homage to the likes of “Pov,” “Frontline,” and “Independent Lens” is telling. Though tough, at times, on the familiar tropes of Morris and the Maysles, the creators’ treatment of documentaries is affectionate; their approach is closer to Christopher Guest’s warm, playful comedies, from “Waiting for Guffman” to “For Your Consideration,” than to the sharp satire of “Drop Dead Gorgeous” or “Tanner ’88.”
This is born, it seems, of their interest in the power of nonfiction narratives, and in the process by which such stories take shape. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, “Documentary Now!” is lavish in its praise — Hader’s version of Little Edie Beale, in the series’ tribute to “Grey Gardens,” replicates several memorable moments in the film almost exactly — but it’s when the series turns toward exaggeration and hyperbole that its understanding of the form’s fakery is on fullest display. Against the “direct cinema” aesthetic of the Maysles, “Documentary Now!” depicts the siblings, here known as the Feins, eliciting performances from their subjects, searching the shadows of “Sandy Passage” for the most compelling variant of the truth. (It comes back to bite them, in a way that acknowledges the elements of Gothic horror in “Grey Gardens” by blowing the original to bits.)
Understanding documentaries as a set of narrative techniques, and not simply as a reflection of “the facts,” “Documentary Now!” is at its most astute in the first season’s “Kunuk Uncovered.” Based on 1988’s “Nanook Revisited,” itself an investigation of the stagecraft in Robert Flaherty’s 1922 silent, “Nanook of the North,” “Kunuk” renders explicit the series’ animating principle: “Was the first documentary a documentary at all,” the narrator intones, “or was it something else?” As William H. Sebastian (John Slattery) attempts to mold his subject, Pipilok (Armisen), into the “Eskimo” of his ethnocentric assumptions, mounting dog sledding and spear fishing scenes, he loses control of the project to its central figure. “Kunuk” becomes an artful farce, part Hollywood excess and part careful craft.
Pipilok first demands compensation, securing the managerial services of a local pimp, and then displaces Sebastian altogether, transforming into a tortured auteur. (At one point, he curses out the cast in his native tongue, a true diva of the directing chair.) His aesthetic innovations — recording sound, building sets, developing “point of view” and new forms of movement — are those, roughly speaking, of realism, and “Kunuk” is, in essence, a reminder that the style that doesn’t seem like a style is no less fabricated for convincing us otherwise. In “Documentary Now!” nonfiction is always “something else”: A performance, a manipulation, a construction, adjacent to “the real” but not a mirror image of it.
In fashioning a new short film for each installment—with the exception of the two-part “Gentle and Soft: The Story of the Blue Jean Committee” — the series is an outlier in the Emmys’ nascent Variety Sketch category. Last year’s inaugural field featured five nominees on the traditional “sketch” model, including “Saturday Night Live” and winner “Inside Amy Schumer,” and all, including the final season of the excellent “Key & Peele,” are among this year’s twenty eligible series (up from 17). But given the TV Academy’s tendency to settle into firm patterns, to the point that one might call them ruts, it would behoove voters to honor the heterodox, learned, distinctly non-topical comedy of “Documentary Now!” while the contours of the category are still in flux.
If there’s one aspect of the series we know Academy members can appreciate, it’s the brilliant impression: Schumer and Ryan McFaul were nominated last year for directing the dead solid perfect satire “12 Angry Men Inside Amy Schumer” as if inhabited by the spirit of Sidney Lumet, a feat “Documentary Now!” manages many times over, and in myriad registers. Its sketches succeed, in the end, because they’re not sketchy at all, but rather fully realized, remarkably savvy reconsiderations of their subject, which is the creative, sometimes-deceptive act of documentary filmmaking itself.
“The Eye Doesn’t Lie” recalls not only “The Thin Blue Line,” then, but also, by dint of its title, the filmmaker’s examination of visible evidence in “Standard Operating Procedure.” “The pictures spoke a thousand words,” as Army Special Agent Brent Pack says in the latter of photographs of prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib, launching into the kind of Morris-esque paradox that IFC’s series so beautifully distills. “But unless you know what day and time they were taken, you wouldn’t know what story they were telling.” The eye does lie, of course, and the brilliant “Documentary Now!” is always catching it red-handed.

If animated TV series “Mike Tyson Mysteries” is “Scooby-Doo” on acid, then the second season was even wackier, with an abundance of fun celebrities and bizarre creatures to design.
This season, character designer Dusty Abell’s task of trying to “simplify real people that we are all familiar with” was combined with a “wider variety of characters. It’s a surprising balance of crass and smart in dealing with pop culture and political satire.”
Abell already had his hands full with the Mystery team: the eponymous Mike Tyson, profane and oblivious (voiced by the former boxer); the alcoholic and obnoxious Pigeon (Norm Macdonald); Tyson’s 18-year-old adopted daughter, Yung Hee Tyson (Rachel Ramras), who resembles “Scooby-Doo’s” Velma; and the haughty ghost of Marquess of Queensberry, the father of modern boxing (Jim Rash).
For Tyson, Abell took inspiration from the Muhammad Ali and Mr. T cartoons of the ’70s and ’80s, and was pleasantly surprised by Tyson’s voice acting ability. Of course, Tyson’s boxing prowess came in handy when interacting with his intellectual sidekick, John Douglas, 9th Marquess of Queensberry.
“He was telling me all about the rules of the old sport and how it evolved over time,” said Abell. “And he was very knowledgeable about the real man and what he brought to the fight game. And Jim Rash had once written a blog about programming 24 hours of Saturday morning cartoons. His take on ’70s and ’80s conventions was fascinating.”
For the episode “Ogopogo!,” which tells Pigeon’s backstory of being human and having a spell put on him by his ex-wife, the eponymous sea monster proved a fun design challenge. “The show called for a haunted lake and a river monster,” Abell said. “And I had no idea they were drawing from legend and lore, so I watched a whole documentary about the Ogopogo monster. It’s the Lake Michigan version of the Loch Ness monster.”
The episode in which Snoop Dogg starts a rival Mystery team (“Unsolved Situations”) provided a different challenge for Abell: “His hair was originally done in little pixie twirls, but the Dogg team had one request: that he look as he does now with tight braids.”

With the official opening of Emmy voting this week, acting Fyc campaigns and highlight reels for television’s favorite actors are flooding the internet. None, however, feature quite as many catfights and flying cocktails as Fox’s clip show for Taraji P. Henson as Cookie Lyon on “Empire.”

In the video, Henson takes the opportunity to make the distinction between herself and her ferocious onscreen persona: “You might think I’m crazy, but I think acting is allowing these characters to use your body as a vessel. A lot of times, I can’t listen to Taraji, so she doesn’t cloud the life of this character.”
Describing the drama of “Empire,” she continues, “It’s reality based in soap opera, so sometimes the writing is so big and so outlandish… and it’s your job as the actor to make it work, to take this bigness and plant it back into reality.”
Henson won a Golden Globe earlier this year for her portrayal of the fierce Lyons family matriarch, and according to IndieWire TV Critic Ben Travers, she has a good shot at a third Emmy nomination this year.

Aya Cash is not the kind of actress who’s desperate for awards attention.
When the “You’re the Worst” star says she’s just happy to be mentioned among the contenders, Cash uses the same statement to quickly shift focus to those other worthy women. She’s the kind of person who, mid-interview, will repeatedly ask if she’s doing okay. If she’s answering the questions properly. If she’s being a worthy contributor to the conversation.
And it’s not because she’s worried about how she’ll come across, but because she wants to genuinely help you, the interviewer, get whatever you want.
Here’s what we want: to see Cash win an Emmy for her monumental performance in “You’re the Worst” Season 2 — and plenty of other people do, too. The performance speaks for itself, and she’s letting it do just that, but such humility combined with a deep connection to the character makes Cash exactly the kind of person we should be heaping attention on, starting with an Emmy.
Not only was it a portrayal of groundbreaking significance — as Cash’s character, Gretchen, unflinchingly depicted the daily struggle of clinical depression — but the actress herself was fearless in attacking the darkest corners of her subject’s fragile psyche. Never before have we seen someone so beaten down by an unseen force — one that plagues so many of us on a daily basis —on TV, in a comedy, and the actress gave no credence to her own appearance or ego. IndieWire recently spoke with Cash, who has earned praise for depicting Gretchen with the same modesty and honesty she lives her life — humanizing herself, the character and the disease all at once.
When were your first presented with the idea of Gretchen being clinically depressed?
I got the first four scripts about two weeks before we started shooting, and I think I was on vacation. I remember reading them by a pool feeling semi-glamorous, you know? When does one get to read scripts for a TV show you’re on by a pool? And I got to the end of the fourth episode — when Gretchen is leaving in the middle of the night with no explanation — and I was like, “Well, you can’t do that to me!” That’s when I talked to Stephen about what was going on. He gave me a heads up of “This is what’s up. You’re crying in your car and this is why.”
Do you remember how much of that arc he gave to you ahead of time? How far down the rabbit hole she was going to go?
No, I didn’t know how far she was going to go. I didn’t know about the stalking episode with Justin Kirk and Tara Summers until I read it. I understood she was struggling with clinical depression and, even though there’s a spectrum on that, it’s a pretty serious issue and I knew that she was going to get dark. But I did joke with Stephen at one point: “So we’re doing a comedy and in every episode, she cries in her car?” I was like, “Wow, it’s going to be a lot.” But I loved it.
There’s a lot that goes into finding the truth and the authenticity in Gretchen while still staying true to the comedy format of the show.
I think it’s just as scary to be delivered a laugh-line as it is to be delivered lines that need emotional depth. They’re both terrifying. I’m not a naturally hilarious person. I’m not a storyteller. I’m not a joke-teller. I can barely remember jokes to save my life. I have decent comedic timing, and I have great writing.
It’s always intimidating when someone says — in the script — “I’m so sorry, I’m crying,” because you’re like, “Well fuck, I guess my decision is that I’m going to be crying in that moment.” And that can be intimidating, but you also can’t go in there and go, “I’m going to cry on this line,” because that would be fake. So I understand that it has to be emotional, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be, “And…cue the tears!”
[pause]
I feel like I haven’t done an interview in a couple months and I’m like, “Oh, what are these? What do I do?” You can just punch me up in any way you need. [laughs]
Perfect. It’s the ideal interview if I can just kind of make up the answers for you.
Great. “Dear Emmy Voters, Aya says she’s not very funny and not to vote for her for Best Comedy Actress.” [laughs]
It felt like this storyline opened things up a bit for Season 2; more (deserved) attention and there seemed to be a bit of a ground swell around the show in general.
I think Stephen and all the writers are really clued into something in the air. Like the amazing collective unconscious or something, because I feel like there’s a couple of shows that now have been talking about depression specifically in a very out way: “BoJack Horseman”; I think it was referenced in “Broad City.” There’s something in the air where it’s starting to come out, and we happened to be there at the beginning.
Was it daunting at all to be the face of that all of a sudden? I’m going to guess that you had to really engage with this conversation.
I felt a great responsibility and — I sound like such a ridiculous Miss America answer — but I felt honored to be a part of the conversation. It’s something that has hit very close to home for me and it’s really important to demystify because so many people struggle from depression of varying degrees.
I’m subject to that as well. I didn’t feel particularly brought down by the shooting of it, but I did actually have a very hard time, to be honest, when it aired; feeling sort of similar to how Gretchen was feeling. I had sort of a delayed reaction to it all and then felt I had to be sort of up for it when I actually myself felt down.
It’s just a big responsibility, and I felt so moved by people who reach out and said that they were struggling with depression and that it helped them. I was so excited that people, for the most part, seemed to be excited to see a fun, comedic character go through that and not be like, ‘Where’s my comedy? I wanted the sex and the fun. Where’s fun Gretchen?’ The truth is fun Gretchen is partly fun because of her depression. A lot her “fun” things that she does are self-medicating. So, it’s all tied together.
In Episode 7, “There’s Not Currently a Problem,” there was so much Gretchen had to go through — all in a moment. It was so vehement, I have to imagine that shooting that scene was pretty exhausting simply from a physical standpoint.
Yeah, I was actually very sick and they moved that shoot day a couple days so that I could at least be slightly coherent for it, which was so insanely lovely. I was a mess.
Don’t judge me for sounding like a pretentious asshole, but coming from “theáter,” [laughs] I actually really enjoy getting to roll into something, so I like a long take. It’s a lot of work and you have to make sure you’re really on top of it, but we’re pretty good about that anyway, so it’s really fun to take a five-page scene and be able to just go and rev up and try different things. We just played. Everyone else had to have stamina, too. I mean, watching me stutter for five pages takes some stamina.
Acting is so bizarre. I think the most important thing is to be there for someone else. Ultimately, if you’re there for someone else, you’ll make yourself look good, too, because you’ll be doing the right thing for what’s happening in the moment.
“You’re the Worst” Season 3 premieres August 31 on Fxx.
