“Conclave” won Best Film at the 2025 EE BAFTA Film Awards, leading the pack with four BAFTAs overall. The British equivalent of the Oscars took place February 16 from the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in central London, honoring the best in film for its 78th annual edition.
Edward Berger’s “Conclave” led all films with 12 BAFTA nominations, and it won Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Adapted Screenplay for Peter Straughan, and Best Editing. It’s an upset after “Anora” swept all three of the DGAs, PGAs, and WGAs. The last film to win those three prizes, but not Best Picture at the Oscars was “Brokeback Mountain,” but then again, it did win the BAFTA for Best Film.
“Anora” did have a strong showing though, with Mikey Madison pulling off an upset and winning Leading Actress over Demi Moore for “The Substance.” “Anora” also won Best Casting, though Madison lost...

During a recent appearance on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” Will Ferrell playfully told Oscar documentary branch voters to “suck it” for snubbing “Will & Harper” in the best doc feature race. Although Ferrell was joking, he voiced a sentiment held by a number of doc branch members.
Netflix acquired “Will & Harper” for a reported eight figures after the film’s acclaimed premiere at last year’s Sundance Film Festival. The doc centers on a road trip Ferrell took with Harper Steele after she came out as transgender 30 years into their friendship. Although it covers a controversial, timely subject matter – gender transition – the film was, thanks in large part to Ferrell’s celebrity status, a success. But that success, depending on who you speak to in the doc branch, could be one reason why the film was not nominated.

Exclusive: In a quick turnaround, Netflix has set a new venue for its annual post-bafta Film Awards party on Sunday, after its usual haunt, the Chiltern Firehouse, was evacuated amid a blaze on Friday afternoon.
No one was hurt in the incident, with Chiltern guests and staff safely escorted out of the premises. However, the property has been closed until further notice.
Netflix is now set to host its starry event at luxury hotel The Twenty Two in Mayfair’s Grosvenor Square.
Despite the fast pivot, it is expected that, as with previous years, Netflix will keep up the celebratory vibe honoring its talent into the wee hours of the morning. The streamer has 16 nominations going into BAFTA night, including 11 for Emilia Pérez, three for Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl and one each for Daughters and Will & Harper.
Invited revelers are also likely to be relieved the fixture event is going ahead.

It’s impossible to overstate the importance of “Saturday Night Live” on American entertainment. Not only has the show introduced the world to some of the greatest comedic performers of their time, but it’s also been responsible for some of the most iconic sketches and musical performances of the last 50 years. And these documentaries capture the magic of these electric moments.
Given how long “SNL” has been around, it’s surprising how few documentaries about the series there are. What’s even more surprising is how many of those documentaries have been lost in the era of streaming. For example, Kenneth Bowser’s “Saturday Night Live” saga, which included deep dives into the ’80s, ’90s and 2000s, isn’t available to stream anywhere, nor is James Franco’s “Saturday Night”. Even ancillary “SNL” documentaries have been lost to time such as the Andy Kaufman-focused “I’m From Hollywood” or “Who Is Chris Rock?...

Will Ferrell may have jokingly told Oscar voters to “suck it” for failing to nominate his Netflix documentary Will & Harper, but come Feb. 16, the doc’s creative team will be soaking up the love in London at the 2025 BAFTA Film Awards.
Will & Harper, which premiered at Sundance 2024 and hit Netflix in September, follows Ferrell and Harper Steele, longtime friends from their days on Saturday Night Live, where Steele was head writer, as they embark on a cross-country road trip after Ferrell learns Steele is coming out as a trans woman. Throughout the trip, the duo explore this new stage of their relationship in an intimate, moving portrait of friendship and transition.
They’ll be up against some stiff competition — Black Box Diaries, Daughters, No Other Land and Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story — but Steele says that the accolades aren’t the reason they made the doc. “If it’s announced that we win,...

Harper Steele is taking credit for being the first person to incorporate a real drug into an episode of “Saturday Night Live.” The former writer and star of “Will & Harper” sat down with Seth Meyers to talk about how she crossed that live TV taboo.
The sketch happened during Season 26 of the NBC show, which was hosted by Lucy Liu with Jay-Z as the musical guest back in December 2000. Steele wrote a sketch that involved Will Ferrell’s stiff lounge singer Robert Goulet promoting a “rap-and-roll” album with Jay-Z. Throughout the bit, the rapper and two other men repeatedly take drags from a joint. After the sketch was performed during dress rehearsal, Jay-Z asked Steele to see him, a meeting she called “terrifying.”
“I get there between dress and air, and Jay-Z goes, ‘Can we get a real joint?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, you’re Jay-Z. Of course you can,...

Will Ferrell recently appeared on “The Late Show” and humorously roasted the Oscars for snubbing “Will & Harper” in the best documentary category. “Especially the doc branch,” Ferrell quipped back. “You don’t want to hang out with the doc branch. What a bunch of losers. I hope there’s some of them here tonight: If you’re a member of the doc branch, suck it.

Will Ferrell missed out on a shot at an Oscar for his feel-good documentary “Will & Harper,” and he knows exactly who to blame: the doc branch.
During a recent appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” Ferrell poked fun at his failure to land a nomination for the film, which follows Ferrell and his longtime friend and “SNL” collaborator Harper Steele as they take a cross-country road trip to bond after Steele comes out as a trans woman. Ferrell’s good-faith efforts to learn the nuances of Steele’s trans experience endeared him to audiences — including Colbert, who began the segment by heaping praise on the documentary and asking Ferrell how it felt to receive an Oscar nomination.
“We didn’t get it,” Ferrell replied.
“Fuck the Academy,” Colbert said to laughter from the audience.

For a long time, it has seemed as though there are just no good comedy movies. Anyone who grew up in the age of Judd Apatow films in the 2000s will surely have noticed the lack of decent big-budget comedy offerings, and that's essentially because studios have all but abandoned them. While laughs still thrive in the indie arthouse world and on television, it's more than a little frustrating that some of the biggest names from the Apatow era haven't used their streaming projects to keep the laughs coming.
Will Ferrell is one example. I don't think it's a stretch to call him one of the funniest men alive, and yet the days of "Step Brothers" and "Anchorman" seem so long ago. Instead, as streaming has come to dominate the moviemaking landscape, Ferrell has been spending his time making uninspired parodies such as "Holmes & Watson" and starring in mixed-bag Christmas streaming movies like "Spirited.

There is a wildcard at every wedding, but in the case of “You’re Cordially Invited,” there are two. And they are played by Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon.
Now streaming on Prime, the film directed by Nicholas Stoller centers on two families who unknowingly double book their weddings at the same small inn — an inn that can really only accommodate one wedding. For Jim (Ferrell), it is his daughter’s, and for Margot (Witherspoon), it is her sister’s. Naturally, the two immediately go insane, trying to force the other to back down.
Somehow, Ferrell and Witherspoon have never led a comedy together, but they are doing it now with a very familiar cast.
Here are the major players you need to know.

At Sunday night’s premiere of “Together,” a body-horror film starring real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie, the Eccles Theatre erupted with shrieks, nervous laughter and cries of “Oh, shit!” Sundance audiences couldn’t get enough of the gory madness unfolding on-screen, and word quickly spread that “Together,” with its twisty look at relationships and gross-out set-pieces, had all the elements of an indie breakout. Studios and streamers, including A24 and Neon, started circling the film, trying to one-up each other in a feverish effort to land the buzzy project. The festival was already well underway, but it finally seemed like old times.

Will Ferrell’s Netflix documentary Will & Harper almost got scrapped before it even began. The acclaimed documentary movie finds the comedian and his long time friend Harper Steele going on a road trip, exploring deep Americana in its entirety.
Will Ferrell, and Harper Steele in Will & Harper | Credits: Netflix
While it is a heartwarming premise for a story, what makes it even more heart-touching is that this is Steele’s first time exploring her beloved country as a trans woman. Steele came out in 2021 to her closest family and friends via an email at 61 years of age.
While she feels some wistfulness for spending so much of her life hiding, she doesn’t want it to hold back anymore. This is when Ferrell suggested the road trip to her, and proposed the idea of a documentary. However, there were complications at the start that almost stopped it from ever happening.

Since the horrendous Los Angeles wildfires broke out Jan. 7, two days after the Golden Globes, Hollywood’s usual awards season activities ground to a halt with numerous postponements or cancellations of ceremonies that normally take place this time of year; these included the Critics Choice Awards; L.A. Film Critics Banquet; AFI Awards Luncheon (now set for Feb. 6); AARP’s televised Movies For Grownups Awards and countless other awards season-related events, even including the voting period and announcement of Oscar nominations that finally took place a week later than planned on Thursday morning. Among those ceremonies earliest affected was American Cinematheque’s 4th Annual Tribute to The Crafts which had originally been scheduled to occur Jan. 9 in Hollywood but, as the fires grew increasingly out of control, was quickly postponed.

There are many longstanding traditions in this entertainment industry of ours, and one of them — not necessarily the greatest, but certainly one of them — is the Sundance Road Trip Movie. Independent films about families and/or mismatched associates on a lengthy trek around the country or the world, in which a series of adventures and/or misadventures usually prove that the journey was just as important as the destination. Sometimes it’s funny, sometimes it’s sad, but always it screams “Sundance.”
Not every Sundance has a Sundance Road Trip Movie, but the festival just wouldn’t be the same without films like “Little Miss Sunshine,” “Paris, Texas,” “Y tu mamá también,” “Smoke Signals,” “Tumbleweeds,” “The Motorcycle Diaries,” “A Real Pain,” “The Puffy Chair,” “Wristcutters: A Love Story,” “The End of the Tour,” “Will & Harper” or “The Brave Little Toaster.” And now, joining that legacy is Cole Webley’s “Omaha,...

Pop quiz. Do you remember what won the Oscar for Best Original Song last year? Here’s a hint: Think pink.
You can listen to Billie Eilish singing "What Was I Made For?” the 2024 Oscar winner on Netflix right now. (It’s in Barbie if you didn’t know.) You can also catch the 2023 Best Song "Naatu Naatu,” from Rrr. But will you be able to hear this year’s winner on Netflix?
After the nominations were announced today, I think there’s a pretty good chance. Three of the five songs nominated for this year’s award are in movies currently available for streaming on Netflix. Before I get to them, let me just mention two other songs currently on Netflix that were on the Academy’s shortlist and did not get Oscar noms because they happen to be two of my three favorites this year.

It’s no secret that corporations like Netflix, Amazon, and Apple have lost their appetite for current event documentaries that tackle politics. The good old days when streamers shelled out seven figures for docus about polarizing politicians like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (“Knock Down the House”), and eye-opening mock-government teen conferences (“Boys State”) after their Sundance debuts are behind us. That type of nonfiction, streamers would like you to think, doesn’t attract enough eyeballs and doesn’t lead to new subscriptions. Algorithms suggest that doc audiences are mostly interested in watching docus about celebrities, cults and true crime.
But Sundance programmers aren’t making their selections with commercial potential as their priority. Between the fraught political climate and growth of right-wing documentaries and streaming buyers’ taste for crowd-pleasing subjects, it falls to festivals to program the bold titles that will garner awards attention down the line.

Between the fraught political climate and growth of right-wing documentaries and streaming buyers’ taste for crowd-pleasing subjects, it falls to festivals to program the bold titles that will garner awards attention down the line.

Happy Oscar Noms Day to all the nominees! And to all the bitterly disappointed Almost Nominees! Here are the most notable inclusions and omissions among this year’s crop.

“I’m Still Here” (Sony Pictures Classics)
Surprise: “I’m Still Here”
The Brazilian drama by director Walter Salles (“Central Station”) deservedly popped up in the Best Picture category, after already scoring noms for Best International Film and Best Actress (Fernanda Torres). Most experts were expecting its Best Picture slot to go to “Sing Sing,” “A Real Pain” or “September 5.”
Margaret Qualley on the set of “The Substance” (Mubi)
Snub: Margaret Qualley
The bold and very game actress from “The Substance” could not quite ride that film’s coattails all the way to nomination morning, missing out on a Supporting Actress nod.

The nominations have been revealed for the 2025 GLAAD Media Awards, and one critically acclaimed LGBTQ+ film is notably absent from the pack of nominees.
The annual awards ceremony will return for a 36th year in 2025. According to GLAAD, it’s goal is to “recognize and honor fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ community in an ever-expanding and media landscape.”
On Wednesday (January 22), the organization revealed the crop of nominees that would be honored at the ceremony. While projects such as Wicked and Queer were notably featured, Netflix’s Emilia Perez was left off the list.
The snub comes after GLAAD declared that the movie, which stars Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez and trans actress Karla Sofia Gascon, was “not good trans representation” in a November 2024 essay. The story included reviews from transgender film critics and noted that “inauthentic portrayals of trans people are offensive and even dangerous.”

The Academy Awards nominations for 2025 will be announced on Thursday, January 23, by Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott. You might have to get up a little early to see the noms, though. That is especially true if you work in the Hollywood film industry.
The Oscars themselves will be held on Sunday, March 2, from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and the host will be (thankfully) Conan O'Brien. Will he be part of a ceremony that hands out a lot of awards to Netflix movies? Maybe.
One Netflix film seems like not only a shoo-in to be nominated for Best Picture, but likely to win. More on that in a second. Here is everything else you need to know.

A year ago, what were the odds that the top-grossing film out of Sundance 2024 would be one starring and executive produced by 93-year-old June Squibb?
Magnolia acquired Josh Margolin’s feature debut “Thelma” right at the end of the festival — one of a few acquisitions that closed during its run. Released in June, it’s grossed $9.1 million in the U.S./Canada. That makes it, for now, the top hit out of the 2024.
Why the “for now”? Steven Soderbergh’s “Presence,” a $5 million Neon acquisition also out of the Sundance 2024 Premiere section, debuts in wide release Friday. Although regarded as a niche title, it could pass $9 million.
“A Real Pain,” which Searchlight bought for worldwide release for $10 million out of the U.S. Dramatic section, stands at a $8.1 million domestic since its release November 1. Disney stopped reporting its grosses last weekend, suggesting it has topped out. (It has been available...

Harper Steele has seen America through the windows of her trusty station wagon on many occasions, but the cross-country journey documented in the film Will & Harper is different. The former Saturday Night Live head writer and comedian had recently transitioned when longtime creative collaborator and friend Will Ferrell made an intriguing pitch: a road-trip documentary that explored not only the country but uncharted territory in their friendship.
Directed by Josh Greenbaum (The Short Game), Will & Harper follows the comedic pair as they explore the spaces Steele had grown accustomed to visiting on previous voyages — dive bars, diners, sports bars — as her true self. “It’s really a drag when you are yourself and you can’t be that everywhere,” says Steele. “I know, from the other side of it, the weirdness I felt navigating the country as not myself. I say that everything I do now, I haven...

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) surprised everyone with its 2025 film nominations by giving more attention to smaller independent films instead of big Hollywood movies.
“Kneecap,” a low-budget Irish-language film about a rap group from Belfast, received six nominations, making it a strong candidate. The film earned spots in key categories, including original screenplay, outstanding British film, and films not in the English language.
The Hollywood musical “Wicked” received mixed results in the nominations. Although the film earned five technical nominations and stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande received acting nominations, it missed the best film award. The French musical “Emilia Pérez” was chosen, highlighting that BAFTA viewers prefer European works.
Hugh Grant’s turn to darker parts paid off with a nomination for best actor in the horror film Heretic. In it, he portrays a menacing loner who stalks missionaries. From his usual romantic comedy parts,...

Universal is absolutely towering over the studios and streamers when it comes to this year’s BAFTA nominations.
Thanks to “The Brutalist” (nine nominations), “Anora” and “Wicked” (seven each), plus “Nosferatu” (five), “The Wild Robot” (three) and “Monkey Man” (one), Universal and its offshoot label Focus Features have amassed an astonishing 32 nominations in total, twice that of its nearest competitor, Netflix. The streamer landed 16 overall, led by the 11 from “Emilia Pérez.”
But Universal could have had five more had it not offloaded Coralie Fargeat’s body-horror “The Substance” before Cannes.
Further down, the nascent distributor Black Bear U.K. had a phenomenal year thanks to the 11 nominations for “Conclave”, and three for “Sing Sing.” Black Bear’s total of 12 was two up on Disney, which earned 10, most coming from Searchlight’s “A Complete Unknown.”

The nominations for the 2025 BAFTA Film Awards are in, and as always, they have their fair share of snubs and surprises.
At the top of the list of snubs this year are “Wicked,” which missed out on the best film category, and Denzel Washington (“Gladiator II”) who, despite being one of the most celebrated actors of his generation, has still never scored a BAFTA nomination. But there were plenty of welcome surprises too, like Hugh Grant earning a lead actor nod for his creepy turn in “Heretic” and Irish-language music film “Kneecap” receiving a better-than-expected six noms.
Below, we break down the biggest developments from this morning’s announcement.

When Will & Harper made the Oscar shortlist for Documentary Feature, director Josh Greenbaum told Deadline, “I am just absolutely thrilled, and I know I share that emotion with Will and Harper, and the whole team behind the film. Obviously, when you work on something for years, and then you go off and edit it in a dark room with your editor, you never totally know how something is going to be received once you put it out into the world.”

Early in the nearly two-hour film, protagonist Harper Steele says with heartbreaking candor, “I love this country so much. I just don’t know if it loves me back right now.”

In the UK today, if you follow the mainstream media, you’ll see trans people – especially trans women – blamed for all of society’s (real and imaginary) ills. In the US, you’ll see something similar, but with a side order of state-level legislation which goes way beyond the banning of medication for young people to make it harder and harder for trans people of any age to access healthcare, avail themselves of their civil rights or exist in public spaces. Yet at the same time as this is happening, public awareness of trans people is increasing, and more people are growing curious about the realities of trans lives. If ever there were a time for a non-sensational, quietly informative documentary on the subject, it is now. Will & Harper is that film, and it also just happens to be one of the best documentaries of the past year.
