Dark Nature begins with a much different, and more realistic horror than what follows. Joy is busy in the kitchen making dinner when Derek gets home. It’s obvious he’s not happy and from the way both Joy and the dog react we know that is a very bad thing. She barely escapes, the dog isn’t so lucky.
Six months later Joy is still trying to get past this trauma and her friend Carmen thinks she has the solution. She convinces her to join her, Tara (Helen Belay; Abracadavers), Shaina and some others on a camping trip/therapy session with the somewhat controversial Dr. Dunnely, “You guys talk about her like you’re in a cult”.

Essentially a humbler, grungier indie “X-Men” without the same dependence on splashy effects, “Code 8” is a solid genre effort from director Jeff Chan. Spun off from his prior short of the same name, the crowdfunded effort is resourceful and polished on a tight budget. Its fast-paced progress has enough appeal to suggest a possible franchise, even if this potential kickoff is held back from becoming something more memorable by the general familiarity of the story and character concepts. Starring cousins Robbie and Stephen Amell (both best known for their respective CW series “The Flash” and “Arrow”), the Canadian sci-fi action film opened Dec. 6 on a single Los Angeles screen, expanding to other U.S. cities as well as streaming on Dec. 13.

With submissions ranging from countries like Italy and Nepal to as short as several minutes to feature length films, every aspect of storytelling has been covered within the 2015 Soho International Film Festival . It only seems fitting that the festival wraps up its sixth annual festival with a number of prominent presenters including The Avengers’ Robert Clohessy and Rescue Me’s James McCaffrey. With awards given to the best of the best at the festival, it was a great close to another successful year for the festival.
There was an even greater presence among the jurors of the festival, with people have worked as actors on shows like Dexter to writers and directors having worked on films like On Golden Years. The jurors included Emmy Award nominee journalist and educator Ernabel Demillo, or ABC Network Casting Head Marci Phillips. David Zayas, an actor on Gotham and Donna McKenna, a casting director and producer,...

Scream Queens delivers a cruel and ultimately disappointing season 1 finale, but that doesn't take away from its highlights...
This review contains spoilers.
1.12 Dorkus & The Final Girl(s)
It's hard to come to terms with how disappointing and infuriating Scream Queens' ending is. There are different ways a finale can let down its viewers and fans but Dorkus/The Final Girl(s) almost breaks new ground in this sense. I'd go so far as to say that Scream Queens has put Lost to shame. It doesn't so much fail to stick the landing but miss the landing entirely and break every bone in its body.
Back in July, Ryan Murphy said, "... at the end of the first season there will only be four characters out of twenty-five left" and yet ten remain. The thirteen-episode run has always seemingly been building up to a bloodbath, with Murphy effectively...

In the end, the same thing that brought down the Chanels was also the major letdown with Scream Queens as a whole: the need to be right. The exact smugness that doomed the crew of blonde psychopaths at the center of this story was the season itself’s main misstep, and one that was doubled down upon rather than made more subtle as it progressed. Being right was more important than being smart in both cases and for the show, this means being way too proud of themselves as everything gets wrapped up. Warning: Spoilers ahead from the "Scream Queens" Season 1 finale.
"Scream Queens" Season 1 just ended, with the revelation of multiple Red Devil killers: Boone (Nick Jonas), Gigi (Nasim Pedrad), Pete (Diego Boneta), and Boone's twin sister, Hester (Lea Michele), who was the only (known) Red Devil left alive after the Fox comedy's season finale.
Lea Michele's Hester was the mastermind behind the killings and also the framing of the Chanels, who ended up in an asylum where -- surprise! -- they were actually happy. (Emma Roberts's Chanel Oberlin may not stay happy since the Red Devil found her in the end.)
Now what?
Please don't question Chad. All his friends are dead and he has nothing. #ScreamQueens #ScreamQueensFinale pic.twitter.com/VoNtb6u16s

Scream Queens, Season 1, Episode 11, “Black Friday”
Written by Ian Brennan

Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on Fox
A table setting episode that actually works as a full episode without being boring, “Black Friday” sets up all of the last pieces of the puzzle before everything is locked into place and solved for good in next week’s two-hour season finale. Nobody dies, despite the Kappa’s best efforts to off Dean Munsch, but many of the remaining players are left with their backs up against the wall as the Red Devil prepares to finish off everyone still bleeding. Grace is without a house of sisters to protect her and a boyfriend who now admits he is a murderer, Chanel is without the assurances that every plan she comes up with will succeed, Pete is a lone wolf probably being targeted by his murder partner, and Dean...

After a mid-season slump, the last couple of episodes show Scream Queens right back on gory, entertaining form...
This review contains spoilers.
1.10 Thanksgiving
Much to my delight, Thanksgiving showed that Scream Queens was capable of maintaining the high quality of last week's sterling episode. The show had something of a wobble halfway through its first season but seemed to make up for it with Seven Minutes In Hell and Ghost Stories. This week, like a lot of Us TV, Scream Queens celebrated Thanksgiving, delivering another terrific episode.
What's instantly noticeable about Thanksgiving, and perhaps it's because of the holiday it centres around, is that it sees the show retracting its claws. Brad Falchuk's script was all about family and being with your loved ones, and so Thanksgiving took a bit of a slower, left-field approach, building up to a thrilling conclusion. It was an episode that...

Scream Queens, Season 1, Episode 10, “Thanksgiving”
Written by Brad Falchuk
Directed by Michael Lehmann
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on Fox
“Thanksgiving” works as well as it does mostly because the specter of death is not constantly lingering over the collection of Thanksgiving dinners in the rotation. No character besides Gigi, who knows the devil’s identity already, sees the devil this episode and because of that the action can slow down for an episode and focus on relationships more fully. Rather than shouting accusations at comrades in the aftermath of an attack or making out because they are in the midst of a life threatening situation, this week the Kappa girls and all of their requisite men have the chance to sit down, discuss things, and actually breathe which is something to be thankful for. Even Gigi’s death, which should feel important seeing as she is the last person...

After a zany, fun start, Scream Queens appears to be in a bit of a slump. Can it regain its former fizz before the season one finale?
This review contains spoilers.
1.8 Mommy Dearest
As you can surmise from the title, this week's Scream Queens, Mommie Dearest, dealt with mommy issues - or for Limeys, mummy issues. Simply throwing in parental problems can be a cheap and unconvincing way to earn sympathy from the audience but, fortunately, Scream Queens is clever enough not to do that. But that's not to say Mommie Dearest didn't have other issues.
We kicked off with the reappearance of the Red Devil - two of them, in fact - confined to the wings last week. Grace's portent that Dean Munsch's blasé attitude would come back to bite her was quickly followed up when the Wallace University head was attacked in the shower.

Scream Queens, Season 1, Episode 8, “Mommie Dearest”
Written by Ian Brennan
Directed by Michael Uppendahl
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on Fox
Yet another episode where Scream Queens spins its wheels and revolves mainly around repetitive conversations betweens the sorority sisters, Wes, Gigi, and Dean Munsch. With only four episodes left, it is clear the show is content to leave all of the major reveals for the last few hours rather than having the story spread out evenly throughout the entire season. A table-setting episode here and there is okay and mostly necessary for many shows, but when there is only a 12-episode run and the crux of the drama comes from action scenes and dramatic information dumps, the lack of solid forward momentum is a problem, and it’s one that Scream Queens doesn’t quite know how to avoid. Either that or, the more likely option, Ryan Murphy and...

Scream Queens, Season 1, Episode 6, “Seven Minutes in Hell”
Written by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan
Directed by Michael Uppendahl
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on Fox
During the episodes where Scream Queens is more mediocre than edgy or shocking, as many episodes have proven to be, the watchability comes down to the characterizations of each Greek member and the actors’ performances. In “Seven Minutes in Hell”, neither of these raises the stakes enough for the episode to feel like much of a worthwhile installment. Much of the horror is repetitive after six weeks of violent terror at the hands of The Red Devil(s) and once again, the victim or victims have no consequence in the grand scheme of things. The episode reestablishes that most of the Kappas are incompetent, some are too petty to pay attention to their own safety, and the rest are not even...

Scream Queens, Season 1, Episode 5, “Pumpkin Patch”
Written by Ryan Murphy
Directed by Brad Falchuk
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on Fox
Even though many things happen during “Pumpkin Patch” that can rightly be described as important developments, this episode is the closest to a table-setting hour that Scream Queens has had so far this season. At the end of the episode, most of the things that were up in the air at the end of the previous installment are still in the same place. The status quo remains unchanged in most ways, which allows time to explore the characters more fully and be more creative with the horror sequences and action scenes. This makes sense, as the episode is technically the middle piece of a trilogy within the season, and as in most trilogies, the storytelling in the second slot is not necessarily weaker than the others, but more incidental.

Of course, this being Scream Queens, Emma Roberts’ character was locked up for all of five minutes before being bailed out by No. 3 and Predatory Lez (which was kind of a bummer. I was looking forward to a full-on Orange Is the New Black situation.

In this episode of Scream Queens, "Pumpkin Patch," Chanel has a falling-out with one of her minions, Grace is determined to find Zayday, the race for the Kappa presidency takes an ugly turn and the Red Devil strikes again.
You can't keep a good Kappa down, which is why Chanel is determined to make her "Black Hairy Tongue Pumpkin Patch Maze" the event of the year. Chanel is wound even tighter than usual, convinced that her presidency and future with Chad is on the line. She's taking out her frustrations on Chanel #5 in particular.

Scream Queens is slick, engrossing slasher TV, even if its body count hasn't yet risen to the expected heights...
This review contains spoilers.
1.4 Haunted House
At its heart, Scream Queens is a slasher series. Strip away the high-camp tone, the starry cast and the satire, and what you get is a show about young people getting stalked by a serial killer. And part of a slasher show's job is to keep its audience on edge, to keep them always anticipating the next episode and fear for the lives of their favourite characters. Up until this point, I've been looking forward to Scream Queens for the almost schlocky entertainment factor. The mystery had yet to catch fire but Haunted House, the first of several Halloween-themed episodes (always a good thing in my eyes), changed that and upped the ante considerably.
We start off with perhaps the show's funniest sequence yet.

Scream Queens, Season 1, Episode 4, “Haunted House”
Written by Ryan Murphy & Brad Falchuk & Ian Brennan
Directed by Bradley Buecker
Airs on Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on Fox
Is Scream Queens scary? Furthermore, does it even want to be? After weeks of establishing the characters and brutally murdering more than a handful, the time has come to finally assess the camp/horror mash-up in the area that counts: Is it at all horrifying for the viewers to watch at home? After “Haunted House”, the beginning of a Halloween trilogy spanning three episodes, the answer is a definite yes. Putting aside the obsession with Chanel Oberlin (who remains insufferable) and a few side adventures (that remain mostly pointless), the central mystery kicks into full gear this week and brings a heaping dose of actual scares along with the extra intrigue. Upending cultural expectations of scary stories or mocking their tropes is one thing,...

Scream Queens' campy combination of comedy and horror continues at a lick in episode two, Chainsaw...
This review contains spoilers.
1.3 Chainsaw
Scream Queens' first week was a culture shock, a barmy helter-skelter of an opener that lay its cards firmly on the table. We're watching a satire that blends together comedy and horror, and episode two, Chainsaw, continues to prove that Scream Queens is capable of both a good joke and a good murder. While the pilot and Hell Week strived for a gag-a-minute rate and as many gory deaths as possible, Chainsaw reels things in a little.
For starters, we only got one death and it was a bit of a cheat. While Ariana Grande's Chanel #2, 'Deaf Taylor Swift', Ms Bean and Shondell all bit the dust last week in gruesome faction, Chainsaw saw Wallace University's newest mascot, Coney, fall victim to the Red Devil.

Scream Queens, Season 1, Episode 3, “Chainsaw”
Written by Ryan Murphy & Brad Falchuk & Ian Brennan
Directed by Ian Brennan
Airs on Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on Fox
The farther Scream Queens moves away from its obsession with the horrendous Chanel Oberlin, the more appealing it becomes to watch as an entertaining gambit rather than just a scare factory. While Emma Roberts settles into the role more fully in the third hour, the lines she is given are still over the top and fail to create a character to root for or appreciate on any level, besides being an avatar for selfish consumerism and popularity addiction. The good news with Chanel is that many of her one-on-one scenes here are far funnier than they were in the first two hours, but the flip side of that is that many are retreads of things the show has already done; a showdown in the freezer...

[Warning: This story contains spoilers from the "Chainsaw" episode of Fox's Scream Queens.] Chainsaw movies are practically their own subgenre of horror film, and Scream Queens — Fox's horror-comedy anthology series from Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan — took on the killer trope by putting one in the hands of the Red Devil. In “Chainsaw,” Grace (Skyler Samuels) and Zayday (Keke Palmer) put their detective caps on as they head to Chanel #2’s (Ariana Grande) home to investigate exactly what happened to her. They learn she used to date Chanel’s (Emma Roberts) on-and-off boyfriend Chad (Glen

Scream Queens, Season 1, Episode 1, “Pilot”
Season 1, Episode 2, “Hell Week”
Written by Ryan Murphy & Brad Falchuk & Ian Brennan
Directed by Ryan Murphy (“Pilot”), Brad Falchuk (“Hell Week”)
Airs on Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on Fox
Given all of the momentum that Scream Queens had coming into the fall season, on the back of a marketing effort that began as far back as April, it’s a shame that in so many areas it falls completely short of its potential in the first two episodes. Many of Ryan Murphy’s shows suffer from being overstuffed with his usually creative ideas and this is no different. There are many pieces that entertain but as soon as one part of the ensemble clicks, whether it be the central sorority sisters or the many spokes that spin off the frenzied and threatened world of Kappa Kappa Tau, the focus shifts elsewhere and stalls any sort of momentary flow.

Two episodes were provided prior to broadcast.
Fox’s Scream Queens wants to be the missing link between Scary Movie and Scream, peppering its wacky humor with a wicked knack for gruesome violence in a way both stomach-churning and gut-busting. And given that co-creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk (reteaming with their Glee co-creator Ian Brennan) never met a genre they couldn’t invigorate with their trademark, devil-may-care theatricality, viewers might tune in optimistic about the series achieving that undeniably admirable goal.
What a shame, then, that the two-hour premiere is so quickly marred by its own mean streak. Minutes into the show, utterly loathsome sorority president Chanel Oberlin (Emma Roberts), head of the ultra-exclusive Kappa House that finds itself under siege from a killer in a red devil mask, dubs her maid “white mammy because she’s basically a house slave.” Especially in the wake of the VMAs, where...

Title: Grace: The Possession Director: Jeff Chan Starring: Alexia Fast, Joel David Moore, Lin Shaye, Kurt Ostlund, Alexis Knapp The intriguing Pov that’s used in ‘Grace: The Possession’ manages to keep the viewer’s attention long enough to see exactly what’s going on in this young girl’s (played by Alexia Fast) life to bring her to such a horrible point, but the filmmaking technique isn’t enough to save this film.
