It’s the first week of the month and DC, Marvel, and Image Comics don't disappoint with their new releases. X-Men: From the Ashes drops another No. 1, DC's Absolute Power continues to affect heroes and villains across the universe, and another tie-in to the Energon Universe is being published.
Since these are only some of the great comic book issues being released, let's dive into all of what we can expect this week (and let's get right into it with the pick of the week!).
Uncanny X-Men No. 1 (pick of the week)Writer: Gail SimoneArtist: David Marquez
I’ve been waiting for this issue since it was announced. Writer Gail Simone is responsible for classic stories for characters like Deadpool and Batgirl. Uncanny X-Men will be another feather in her ever-growing classics hat.
She's taking well-known X-Men such as Rogue, Gambit, Jubilee, Nightcrawler, and Wolverine, leading them into new adventures.

While the MCU is currently centered on Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Victor Von Doom, one of Marvel’s most formidable villains, the comics are charting their own course. The beloved storylines and characters in Marvel’s comics are continuing to evolve, and this report will focus on that evolution.
Specifically, we’ll delve into the latest Avengers comic book storyline by Jed MacKay. The issue in question is Avengers #18, which continues from the previous installment that introduced Storm as the newest member of the Avengers.
The upcoming issue will feature a dramatic showdown between Storm and Hyperion, the Avengers’ current adversary who is portrayed as Marvel’s villainous counterpart to Superman. Additionally, our colleague Isaac Jansons from ScreenRant adds a personal perspective to the story, which we’ll also share with you here.
As mentioned, Storm recently joined the Avengers in the comics and immediately faced a formidable opponent: Hyperion.

And while the MCU is currently focused on the return of Robert Downey Jr. in the role of Victor Von Doom, one of Marvel’s biggest villains, Marvel’s comics are continuing on their own path as the storylines we love to follow are being continued, and these stories and characters are being evolved further, which is going to be the focus of this report as well.
The story we are going to focus on comes from the newest Avengers comic book storyline, which is being written by Jed MacKay. The comic book issue in question is Avengers #18, which follows up on the story in the previous issue, which introduced Storm as the newest member of the Avengers in the comics.
Namely, the upcoming issue will bring us a fierce battle between Storm and the Avengers’ current foe, Hyperion, who has already been described as Marvel’s own villainous version of Superman.

So far, X-Men’s newest saga From the Ashes has produced three comic books. X-Men by Jed MacKay, Phoenix by Stephanie Phillips, and the most recent, Nyx written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing.
I noted that Nyx would be the best comic book of the week. It had Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan), Wolverine (Laura Kinney), and random mutants that deserve a chance in the spotlight. Not only did the premiere issue not disappoint, but it also showed that this will be the best comic book of 2024. Unfortunately, it will be despised as well.
Nyx No. 1 perfectly establishes all of the former Krakoans starring in this series and what they’ve done since. Despite everything the world has done to them, Kamala and Laura are still trying to be heroes. Anole got a job as a bartender, Prodigy is a professor at a college, and Sophie Cukoo is a student living her best life.

Senior X-Men Editor Tom Brevoort discussed his role in the "From the Ashes" Era of X-Men storytelling, emphasizing that his focus is on telling new stories rather than "fixing" or correcting previous ones. Brevoort explained that his responsibility as X-Editor is to add to the ongoing tapestry of X-Men lore in new and exciting ways, rather than to "re-litigate" previous stories. The Editor stated that he does not feel the need to reverse or counter any scenes from past issues, as he believed these things aren't a significant concern to a majority of the audience.

Marvel’s mutants have just lost their best chance at unity and self-determination. They’ve been betrayed, beaten, and scattered back into the world, far from their sovereign nation of Krakoa. For oncoming Uncanny X-Men writer Gail Simone, the thing these mutants need is some sexual healing.

Tom Brevoort explained the decision to sideline fan-favorite characters like Rasputin IV as well as classic time-travelers such as Cable and Bishop in the "From the Ashes" relaunch of the X-Men franchise, in favor of focusing on "here and now" storytelling. Brevoort's goal as the new Senior Editor of Marvel's X-Office is to focus on making the stories palatable to a wider audience though the publisher may perhaps underestimate how sci-fi literate contemporary audiences have become. Characters like Rasputin IV, Cable, and Bishop will reappear as the new era gets established; what "From the Ashes" is aiming to provide as it launches is a clean entry point for new and returning readers, by offering grounded, character-focused stories that don't rely on too much convoluted backstory.

The X-Men's newest comics, "From The Ashes," look to be banking on the 90s nostalgia that made the recent "X-Men '97" revival such a success. This safe approach, though, comes off (and undoes) one of the most experimental periods in "X-Men" comics ever: the Krakoa era.
"X-Men" has a premise that could be a straightforward science-fiction story, no capes needed, but most of their stories lean more on soapy interpersonal drama than big ideas. Krakoa titled that balance in the other direction. This new dawn for X-Mankind kicked off in 2019 with interlocking miniseries "House of X" and "Powers of X" and concluded in 2024.
"Krakoa" is the name of a South-Pacific island where Professor X, Magneto, and Moira MacTaggert create a homeland for all mutants (even the bad guys). Mutants proclaim themselves the next step in human evolution and now that they're one people, they prove that by outpacing human achievement.

"Krakoa" is the name of a South-Pacific island where Professor X, Magneto, and Moira MacTaggert create a homeland for all mutants (even the bad guys). Mutants proclaim themselves the next step in human evolution and now that they're one people, they prove that by outpacing human achievement.

In a surprising shift, the Juggernaut joins the X-Men as a hero, while Professor X's role may be turning towards villainy. Writer Jed MacKay reveals that the upcoming X-Men era, From the Ashes, will explore Juggernaut's relationship with the X-Men and his non-mutant status. The Juggernaut's redemption arc on Krakoa led to his official spot on the X-Men team, as Professor X's corruption may lead him down a darker path.
The Juggernaut is an official member of the flagship X-Men team in the mutants upcoming Marvel Comics era, From the Ashes, which calls into question the standing of his stepbrother, Professor X. The Krakoan Era may be over, but its impact on mutants will endure. Everything You Need to Know About Marvel's "Floating Timeline" (According to a Senior Marvel Edtior)
Marvel's "floating timeline" keeps characters perpetually in their prime, allowing for contemporary storytelling across all iconic heroes and villains. X-Men Senior Editor Tom Brevoort emphasizes the necessity of Marvel's "sliding timeline" to keep characters fixed in age relative to the real world. Fans may argue over characters' ages, but Marvel's policy of maintaining a flexible timeline is crucial for storytelling and character relevance.
Marvel continuity has long operated on a "floating timeline," in which only a few characters' backstories are concretely tied into history, allowing most of the company's most iconic heroes and villains to remain perpetually in their prime. As Senior Editor Tom Brevoort takes over the company's X-Men titles for the "From the Ashes" relaunch, he has offered an account of the practical and artistic considerations that behind the "floating timeline."

Outgoing X-Men Editor Jordan D. White admitted in an interview that he hoped Krakoa would remain a permanent fixture for Marvel, calling its ending "bittersweet" as he prepares to move on from the franchise. The Krakoan Era revolutionized X-Men; many fans agree with White that it didn't need to end but there are at least some positives that can come from its conclusion. White's exit as Senior Editor coincides with the closure of the monumental Krakoan Era, which he helped bring to fruition early in his time leading the X-Office, and oversaw during its entirety.

In X-Men #35, Colossus delivers a heroic uppercut and powerful quote during a fight with Apocalypse, ending the franchise's Krakoan Era on a high note for a character who was brought to his lowest point during that time. The Krakoan Era concludes with a symbolic Colossus vs. Apocalypse battle, showcasing Colossus's strength and resolve, while once more positioning Apocalypse as an antagonist, in what feels like a significant throwback to pre-Krakoan dynamics. Colossus's journey in the Krakoan Era ends on a positive note, hinting at a renewed heroic role, and a position of prominence, in the X-franchise's upcoming "From the Ashes" Era.

I Wish X-Men's Krakoa Era Could Last Forever, But I'm Convinced We Just Got Its Best Possible Ending
Krakoa was a flawed utopia that inspired hope and reflection on complex issues, making the Krakoan Age unforgettable for X-Men fans. The X-Men's era under Hickman was a beloved masterpiece that ended in a bittersweet, but satisfying way in X-Men #35, honoring its legacy. While New Krakoa offers a beacon of hope for mutants, the X-Men's duty to protect Earth's mutants meant they could never abandon their original home.
I really, truly loved the Krakoan Age of the X-Men, and I am devastated that one of the X-Men's most creative, inspiring, and bold eras is now officially over. Evolution. Mutation. Change.
These concepts have always been at the heart of the X-Men story. Even the fairly straightforward Silver Age adventures by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby made in the 1960s positioned mutants as the next stage in human evolution. X-Men #35 wraps up the Krakoan Era with the poignant symbolism of David Marquez' variant cover, which mirrors Pepe Larraz' cover for 2019's House of X #1, which inaugurated the Era. David Marquez's inverts the iconic image from House of X #1, definitively signaling the end of the Era with a reflection of the beginning of the most transformative chapter in X-Men history. The Krakoan Era marked a monumental achievement for the X-Men franchise; now, Marvel will look to follow up this period of groundbreaking storytelling with another relaunch, as mutantkind rises "From the Ashes."
The long anticipated end of the X-Men franchise's Krakoan Saga has come, with its final issue bringing the journey full circle in a single image, one that will provide bittersweet resolution to readers who have gone along for the ride. In an emotionally resonant reflection of Krakoa's first image, Marvel has closed the book on another chapter in X-history.

Hellion, a former Academy X student, is a powerful telekinetic mutant with a turbulent past, and potential for leadership that could be explored further in the X-franchise's upcoming relaunch "From the Ashes" Repeated tragedies, including losing his hands, have left Hellion sidelined after spending time as a prominent X-character; while he has appeared in minor, supporting roles during the Krakoan Era, the creators behind X-Men should consider giving him an important role in the franchise's new paradigm. In a post-Krakoa world, Hellion could be vital to helping the next generation of mutants, as he has a unique understanding of mutant struggles, and should be given the opportunity to rise as a leader for the X-Men.
Even at their lowest points, the X-Men is consistently stacked with powerful mutants. Generations of students have passed through different incarnations of their specialized schools, and while some went on to become team members, others have remained in the background.

As Marvel True Believers will tell you, writer Al Ewing’s style is a fascinating synthesis of six different comics traditions. He has all of the bombast of Jack Kirby at his Kirbyest, the taste for the occult of Grant Morrison, the unrestrained imagination of Jim Starlin, the visual language of Alan Davis mixed with Christopher Priest, and the methodical formalism of Jonathan Hickman.
Ewing started his career on 2000 Ad books before quickly finding himself in the Marvel stable. After a multiverse-redefining run on Ultimates and giving Bruce Banner’s world a fresh coat of paint in Immortal Hulk, Ewing joined the X-Office to write several books, including X-Men Red and Resurrection of Magneto. Now, as Marvel prepares to release X-Men #35, the milestone 700th issue of Uncanny X-Men that...

When Secret Wars writer Jonathan Hickman relaunched the X-Men line of comic books by sending the heroes to Krakoa and making them immortal, there was one subtle change which generated a lot of discussion.
After decades of the trio being embroiled in a love triangle, it was strongly hinted that Wolverine, Cyclops, and Jean Grey's new life on the island nation had resulted in them taking their relationship down a very...modern...route.
Yes, the insinuation was that they were a "throuple," with Scott and Logan presumably sharing Jean (or vice versa).
The biggest hint in that respect came when the floorplan of the "Summer House" confirmed that their bedrooms were linked, with Jean's in the middle (something unique to their rooms only).
We're sure you don't need us to join the dots there, but Tom Brevoort, Executive Vice President and new X-Men Group Editor at Marvel Comics, has...
