"SNL" was hilarious for it's season opener ... Alec Baldwin tore the Prez apart over his reaction to the Puerto Rican disaster. No stone was left unturned. The Sarah Huckabee Sanders impression was cringe-worthy. Ditto Jeff Sessions, who planted a smooch on Trump's cheek as he pledged his blind loyalty. The phone call between the mayor of Puerto Rico and Trump is hilarious ... especially how Trump mischaracterizes the call and blasts her to Sarah. Definitely no shortage of material this season.

Ryan Reynolds really cares about his fans.
The star did his part to help make a terminally ill child's dream come true by calling the young Marvel superfan from the set of Deadpool 2.
When 5-year-old Daniel Downing was diagnosed with a particularly aggressive form of brain cancer earlier this month, his parents set about trying to arrange a phone call from the Deadpool star to help raise their son's spirits.

Reynolds was more than happy to speak with the young fan, and the touching meeting was caught on camera. The phone call quickly turned into a FaceTime conversation when Downing asked if he could show Reynolds his Deadpool T-shirt.
"Ah that's awesome, what an awesome T-shirt!" Reynolds exclaimed. "You know, I'm the only guy who doesn't have one of those T-shirts. I need to get one of those."

Now that the question of Jack’s whereabouts has been answered on This Is Us, it’s time to look at every clue that should have tipped us off.
It was established in Tuesday's episode that the Pearson patriarch is dead in the present day, with his ashes in the golden urn on the mantle in Kate’s home. As it turns out, the first five episodes of the NBC family drama have actually provided major hints at his fate -- and some were right under our nose.
Et has compiled a list of the clues from the first five episodes that we should have kept in mind.

It's famously one of the worst sequels ever, but why did Jaws The Revenge go so wrong? Ryan looks at its disastrous nine-month production...
It's an oft-repeated adage that nobody sets out to make a bad movie, but Jaws The Revenge is so legendarily, comically bad that it almost looks like an inside job. The fishy sequel, released in 1987 to scathing reviews, famously stars a rubbery shark that growls when its head rears out of the water, Michael Caine spouting bizarre dialogue and some of the most glaring continuity errors this side of an Ed Wood movie.
What separates Jaws The Revenge from the usual bad-movie crowd is its otherwise decent pedigree. It was the product of a major Hollywood studio. The budget was generous. The director, Joseph Sargent, was far from a hack - a veteran of TV and film, he'd previously made the classic thriller...

Pope Francis is known for making comforting calls to strangers, and this time he reportedly reached out to a man who murdered his parents 25 years ago, in a case that shocked Italy. The man, Pietro Maso, now 45, wrote to the pope in 2013 begging for forgiveness after spending more than 20 years in jail for battering his mother and father with saucepans. "I wrote a letter to the pope in which I asked forgiveness for what I did 25 years ago and that I was praying for peace," Maso, who was released in 2013 and now lives in Milan, recently told the Italian weekly magazine Chi.

Say whosey whatsy what now? The last 10 seconds of tonight's Scream Queens has us thinking all kinds of thoughts because it appears that the guy who looked the most suspicious in the very first episode, and yet we somehow totally forgot all about that, is perhaps indeed The Red Devil. (Or, at the very least, a Red Devil.) "I don't want your first time to be with a murderer," Pete (Diego Boneta) tells Grace (Skyler Samuels), moments after we see him packing up his bags to flee the campus, after telling someone on the phone that he's had enough, and "This isn't me." The phone call, of course, along with the reveal that he still has that Red Devil costume hanging...

When Jamal closed that door on Cookie last week, shivers went down my spine because I was hoping that that would begin his descent into Corleone-dom. And in this episode, when he rolled up in a big black car and told Hakeem to get in, when he was going to become an uncle, when Lucious lost his voice and was doing his best Brando impression, I thought we were in for a full-scale Godfather homage. However, Jamal never was vicious in this episode and Lucious’ jaw remained unpuffy. There’s still time yet for a montage of people being brutally murdered as Jamal stands at Andre’s baby’s baptism. We kick off this week’s episode with a slickly executed montage of phone calls where everyone in Cookie and the Hostile Takeover Gang is planning something, but not telling everyone exactly what they’re planning. The phone call montage...

"You're the Worst," the great romantic comedy about two awful people struggling to accept that they have real feelings for each other, returns for a new season, on a new channel (so you will probably have to make new DVR season passes), tonight at 10:30 on Fxx. Yesterday, I spoke with the show's creator, Stephen Falk, about what makes "You're the Worst" tick. Today, it's the turn of stars Aya Cash and Chris Geere, who have their own takes on Gretchen and Jimmy's relationship, the explicit sex scenes of the pilot (and why they're relieved that didn't continue), Jimmy's fake mustache, and a lot more. When did you guys first meet in the process of doing this, and how? Aya Cash: We met during the test for "You’re the Worst," but barely remember each other because we were both so narcissistically in our own heads and nervous about the test.

Leah Messer is due for a little fun in the sun. The "Teen Mom 2" star was spotted in Los Angeles this week, hitting the beach in Santa Monica with her three daughters, Ali, Aleeah and Adalynn for a girls day out. The twice-divorced 23-year-old proudly put her physique on display in a white bikini with gold embellishments as she ran around the sand. This is one of the first times we've seen her out in public since her divorce from Jeremy Calvert and her reported trip to rehab for stress and depression earlier this summer. We gotta say, she does look happier and healthier than she's appeared on the MTV reality show this year. Fans of the series have seen Messer hash it out with both Calvert and first ex-husband Corey Simms all season long -- and, from the looks of it, the drama is only beginning. In a sneak peek for tonight's episode,...

Academy invitee Eddie Redmayne in 'The Theory of Everything.' Academy invites 322 new members: 'More diverse and inclusive list of filmmakers and artists than ever before' The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has offered membership to 322 individuals "who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures." According to the Academy's press release, "those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy's membership in 2015." In case all 322 potential new members say an enthusiastic Yes, that means an injection of new blood representing about 5 percent of the Academy's current membership. In the words of Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs (as quoted in the press release), in 2015 "our branches have recognized a more diverse and inclusive list of filmmakers and artists than ever before, and we look forward to adding their creativity, ideas and experience to our organization." In recent years, the Academy membership has...

Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

There may have been few surprises among the winners at Sunday night's Academy Awards, but one surprise was how political their speeches were. After all, in recent years, political statements have largely been unwelcome guests at the Dolby Theater.
In past years, artists from Vanessa Redgrave to Richard Gere to Michael Moore have been criticized for using their time at the Oscar podium to raise controversial issues before a worldwide audience. In an evening of glitz, glamour, and self-congratulation, mentioning the sometimes cruel realities of life beyond Hollywood Boulevard makes winners seem like party poopers. Mentioning God, your cast and crew, your spouse and kids, and Harvey Weinstein is fine, but mentioning the plight of migrant farm workers is a little too much reality for the dream factory.
Nonetheless, several winners at the 87th annual Oscar ceremony used their victory speeches to mention causes important to them. Some of those...

Welcome to the 87th Oscars. Host Neil Patrick Harris opened the show with a musical number featuring “moving pictures” inserting himself into scenes from classic films. Anna Kendrick joined him in the opening number as well as Jack Black before an audience of Hollywood’s A-listers at the Dolby Theatre.
The awards season, filled with ups and downs, came to a close on Oscar Sunday with Birdman winning four Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director (Alejandro G. Iñárritu), Best Original Screenplay (Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Nicolás Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris, Jr. & Armando Bo) and Best Cinematography (Emmanuel Lubezki).
Iñárritu said his good luck charm was wearing Michael Keaton’s tighty‑whities. When asked backstage about the making of the film he said, “this film was particularly scary to be making, you know. It’s very difficult and that’s what Birdman is about. As an artist some day or two hours, you...

Birdman walked away with four of the biggest awards at the Oscars 2015.
The Michael Keaton-starrer beat American Sniper, Boyhood, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game, Selma, The Theory of Everything and Whiplash to the Best Picture award, while Alejandro González Iñárritu was named Best Director.
"Maybe next year the Academy will introduce some kind of immigration law. Two Mexicans in a row, that's suspicious, I guess," Iñárritu joked, referring to Alfonso Cuarón's win for Gravity last year.
The movie also achieved success in the Original Screenplay and Cinematography categories, giving it an equal number of awards to The Grand Budapest Hotel.
Wes Anderson's comedy film starring Ralph Fiennes and Tony Revolori was recognised for its Costume Design, Make-up and Hairstyling, Original Score and Production Design.

A memorable 87th annual Academy Awards for Fox Searchlight saw Birdman claim best film, director and two other statuettes to tie with The Grand Budapest Hotel’s four-strong haul.
Boyhood, which entered the evening on six nominations and had been expected to push Birdman in several of the senior categories on Sunday night, won a sole best supporting actress for Patricia Arquette.
The film’s time in the Oscar ceremony spotlight will not be forgotten, however, as Arquette paid tribute to her “Boyhood family” and made an impassioned plea for wage equality that spread like wildfire across social media.
Eddie Redmayne from The Theory Of Everything prevailed in a tight best actor contest to deny Michael Keaton another success for Birdman. The popular victory had the British actor jumping with excitement on stage at the Dolby Theatre.

Chicago – The Bird was the word at the 87th Academy Awards, as the film “Birdman” won Best Picture and Alejandro González Iñárrittu won Best Director for the same film. The stellar broadcast was hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, and was highlighted by some passionate speeches and song performances.

The other top categories contained few surprises, as Eddie Redmayne took Best Actor for “The Theory of Everything,” Julianne Moore won Best Actress for “Still Alice” and the Best Supporting trophies were taken home by Patricia Arquette for “Boyhood” and J.K. Simmons for “Whiplash.” Several of the accepting speeches, including the ones by Patricia Arquette and director Alejandro González Iñárrittu, included some revolutionary style shout-outs to causes that go beyond the Awards. The performance of the Oscar winning song “Glory,” from the film “Selma,” moved several of the star-studded audience members to tears.

87 years into the ceremony, the Oscars are still unabashedly about the movies. Host Neil Patrick Harris along with Anna Kendrick performed a whizzbang ode to “moving pictures” in perfect Broadway musical style. And despite the fresh songwriting that seemed to give a nod to last year’s winners for Frozen and “Let it Go”, it couldn’t help but feel familiar and traditional in the grand scheme of the Oscar ceremony: glad-handing, nostalgia and pageantry.
But for a moment, Jack Black turned this musical montage on its head. Black interrupted Nph’s song to shoot a knowing eye to all of the above, as well as the sequels, superhero movies and reboots that flood the studios year after year. It was a rare moment of the Academy looking outward at the rest of the world when this year’s crop of nominees (which Harris joked was an opportunity to recognize the “best and whitest…...

Birdman, Eddie Redmayne, J K Simmons and Big Hero 6 are amongst the big winners at the Oscars. Here's our round-up...
So then. We learned a few things about the Academy Awards this year. Firstly, we don't think we've ever got so many predictions wrong. Secondly, though, Hollywood sure loves films about the performing arts.
For the third time in four years, the Best Picture Oscar went to a film about showbusiness, as the big awards went roughly in line with the way bookmakers had been predicting for the past week or so. It was Birdman's night, and whilst Michael Keaton lost out to Eddie Redmayne - as had been expected - for Best Actor, Birdman took home gongs for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. It wasn't quite a surprise, but if you'd suggested that would be the case a month ago, you'd have certainly got...

The real winner at the 2015 Oscars wasn't a film or an actor, but a little bakery in Suffolk, England. During their acceptance speech, Mat Kirkby, director of the Best Live Action Short, The Phone Call (with co-writer and producer James Lucas), mentioned that he was excited to bring his Oscar into his local bakery. Turns out, this has been a longstanding goal: In an interview a week ago, Kirkby mentioned that one of the women who works at Pump Street Bakery near his home in Suffolk, England, "promised me a free doughnut if I bring in the Oscar," before mentioning...

It's a "short" but sweet win for The Phone Call. The movie, directed by Mat Kirkby, was awarded the 2015 Oscar for Best Short Film, Live Action on Sunday night. The short film was written by Kirkby and James Lucas and follows Heather, a shy woman who works in a call center. Kirkby and Lucas took the stage to receive the award from Kerry Washington and Jason Bateman. Kirkby in particular was excited by the victory because he said it would get him a free doughnut from his local bakery. Other contenders in the Best Live Action Short Film category included Aya,...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has just finished presenting the winners of The 87th Annual Academy Awards, resulting in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s masterpiece Birdman taking four Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Cinematography. At the bottom of this post I've included my predictions in all 24 categories along with those of my Oscar live blog and podcast partner Laremy Legel, followed by the results from the reader polls from earlier this week and just like last year there are a couple differences to note. Between the three sets of predictions, I'm the only one predicting an Eddie Redmayne win for Best Actor while Laremy and the readers are sticking with Michael Keaton. I've definitely gone what I would consider to be the "safe" route and wouldn't complain one bit if Keaton ended up taking the statue. Laremy and the readers also see a The Grand Budapest Hotel win for Best Original Screenplay while I went with Birdman and in one more category, Best Live Action Short, the readers...

Chicago – Oscar! Oscar! Oscar! Say it three times to win it, and you’ll win every Academy Award pool you enter – at least for the nine categories covered here – if you follow the advice of the HollywoodChicago.com “experts.” We have the Oscar magic, so if you believe in it, then we deliver.
Three film writers of HollywoodChicago.com – Patrick McDonald, Nick Allen and Spike Walters – will not only predict Sunday’s big night, but will suggest choreography to Neil Patrick Harris for his opening number. The crew will opine on Best Picture, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor/Actress and Director. As in previous years, the prognostications are broken down into thoughts on who Will Win, Should Win and Should Have Been Nominated (for one last gasp of dissent). The predictors will also take on a wild card guess for several other categories, and the latest odds on the rest of...

When it comes to predicting success and failure in Hollywood, as "The Princess Bride" screenwriter William Goldman famously said, "Nobody knows anything." Well, nobody except the accountants at PricewaterhouseCooper, who are currently counting the Oscar ballots in anticipation of Sunday's Academy Awards. But the rest of us know nothing, even experienced Oscar prognosticators.
That's especially true this year, when only a handful of the 24 categories seem like foregone conclusions. The rest are tight races, all the way down to Best Picture. This should make the Feb. 22 telecast suspenseful, but it also makes filling out your own Oscar ballot harder. Still, here are my predictions, based on nearly three decades of covering the Academy Awards, attending the ceremony a few times, having kept a close watch on the current race, and a wet index finger held up to the wind. If I do well, I'll be bragging on Monday; if not,...

When the first Academy Awards were handed out on May 16, 1929, at an Academy banquet in the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, movies had just begun to talk. The attendance was 270 and guest tickets cost $5. It was a long banquet, filled with speeches, but presentation of the statuettes was handled expeditiously by Academy President Douglas Fairbanks.
The suspense that now touches most of the world at Oscar time was not always a characteristic of the Awards presentation. That first year, the award recipients were announced to the public three months ahead of the ceremony.
Today, Oscar pundits and fans alike avidly watch the precursor and guild awards to ultimately make their predictions in the 24 categories. Academy members have cast their ballots, so now it’s our turn for our Oscar picks.
