Everybody knows the story of Lizzie Borden. She’s been the subject of rock operas, movies, and TV shows and one very influential nursery rhyme. CBS’s “Lizzie Borden Took an Axe” asks “What if everything told in the past about the famed Lizzie Borden case is wrong?” Erin Moriarty and 48 Hours will investigate the double homicide that captured the nation on Saturday, March 28 at 10 p.m.
The investigative series takes a “fresh look at a very cold case that turns up surprising results” according to the press release. Borden was 32 years old when she was acquitted hacking her father and stepmother to death in 1892. Lizzie became the prime suspect because her sister Emma was out of town and the housekeeper were the only other people in the locked home at the time of the killing. Borden denied having anything to do with the murder but authorities were concerned with her demeanor following the crime.

Christina Ricci knows people judge her. She grew up in the public eye as the Goth girl, the alternative chick, the youthful indie darling. For her, those tacit critiques just provide the excuse to execute another hard turn.
“I’m a natural contrarian. So anytime someone tries to tell me what I am, I immediately change and I’m something else,” she said. “I can’t help it; I’m a total asshole in that respect. I never give people that. Sometimes it’s terrible and I should really just allow people to view me the way they want to, but I have a real desire and drive to define myself and to not be defined by others.”
As a child star, she was best known for her role as the malevolent Wednesday Addams in “The Addams Family.” In her teen years, she demonstrated a fondness for outrageous comments about...

Actor John Dunsworth, who played photographer Dave Teagues on Syfy’s fantasy drama Haven, died Monday after battling a short illness. He was 71.
Dunsworth’s daughter Sarah, who co-starred with him on the Canadian mockumentary series Trailer Park Boys, announced the news on Twitter.
“With heavy and broken hearts, the family of John F. Dunsworth would like to let people know that our amazing husband, father and grandfather John Dunsworth has passed away,” she wrote. “John left this world peacefully after a short and unexpected illness. The family would like to request that our privacy is respected during this time of grief.

The first poster has been released for the next film in the Saw franchise. It was recently revealed that the film would be called Jigsaw, after the crazed killer that made the horror franchise famous. This is the eighth Saw film and it comes seven years after the last film, Saw: The Final Chapter, which obviously wasn't the final chapter.
Bodies are turning up around the city, each having met a uniquely gruesome demise. As the investigation proceeds, evidence points to one man: John Kramer. But how can this be? The man known as Jigsaw has been dead for over a decade. Or has an apprentice picked up the mantle of Jigsaw, perhaps even someone inside the investigation?
Franchise star Tobin Bell is set to return to the franchise in some capacity. He will actually be at San Diego Comic-Con doing autographs. I imagine we'll end up getting our first trailer at the convention.

Supernatural continues to thrill audiences with scares, intriguing storylines and sharp witted humor. It’s no wonder that the cult favorite is now in its eleventh season with no end in sight. To follow up this week’s strong character piece, “Baby,” the producers have decided to tread uncharted water, at least for this show.
The case of Lizzie Borden is no doubt one of the most notorious bits of true crime in American history. Pretty much everyone is familiar with the story and has likely heard the “Lizzie Borden took an ax….” nursery rhyme at some point in their life. Despite being acquitted of her parents’ murders, Ms. Borden’s name has lived on in infamy. Her home has actually been turned into a bed and breakfast inn, attracting tourists from near and far.

Lifetime’s new limited series The Lizzie Borden Chronicles premieres Sunday, April 5 at 10/9Ct. In January 2014, Lifetime took a proverbial whack at bringing the sordid tale of Lizzie Borden to a new generation of horror fans with its original film Lizzie Borden Took an Ax. Starring Christina Ricci as the parent-dispatching Lizzie and Argo’s Clea DuVall as her obedient sister Emma, Lizzie was a bloody good time and a ratings killer, luring 4.4 million viewers on its way to becoming cable’s second-most-watched original film of the year. A few months later, the network approached Ricci with another idea — reuniting with … Continue reading →

The final guild/industry group to declare nominees did so this afternoon as the Motion Picture Sound Editors (Mpse) spoke up with a roll call of players for the 62nd Golden Reel Awards. On the film side of things, "Birdman" and "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" had the best showing with three nominations each. I've been wondering if the latter could slide into Oscar play this year, but it's hard to gauge here, as "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" had a nice Mpse showing, too. In the effects/foley category, "Fury" is featured as well, also a strong possibility to pop up. All other expected players ("American Sniper," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Unbroken," etc.) are featured. We'll see how the sound branch shakes it all out tomorrow but I'm a little more confused by where they'll end up going than usual, I must say. Check out...

“The Lizzie Borden Chronicles” is a “what if” follow-up to 2014’s “Lizzie Borden Took an Ax,” director Stephen Kay told reporters at Friday’s Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour.
Last January’s Lifetime TV movie, which grabbed 4.4 million viewers, told the true story of the titular character, a young woman tried and acquitted in the 1892 murders of her father and stepmother — and this series turns her real-life story into historical fiction.
In other words, Borden keeps on killing — history be damned.

Following her turn earlier this year as infamous murderer, Lizzie Borden, Christina Ricci is set to reprise her role for Lifetime’s follow-up show. The six episode limited series, Lizzie Borden: The Fall River Chronicles, will pick up where the movie left off, and follow Borden after her acquittal.
The sequel series will be produced by Sony Pictures TV, who also developed the first movie. Lifetime aired that feature, Lizzie Borden Took An Ax, this past January to great acclaim. A viewership of 4.4 million indicated that audiences are really rather keen on watching attractive women go bananas, hence the sequel series.
“For more than a century, the world has been captivated by the legend of Lizzie Borden. But no one has captured her enigmatic menace as well as Christina Ricci,” said Lifetime’s Rob Sharenow (via Deadline). “This series will take viewers further down Lizzie Borden’s dark path,...

Big Driver adapted from a novella that appeared in Full Dark No Stars is all about psychological jolts. Told more in the vein of a Geralds Game than a Salems Lot the story centers on suffering and revenge and it could conceivably be an excellent fit for Lifetime. If they can duplicate the effectiveness of Lizzie Borden Took an Ax they can produce another winner. With King involved its more likely that we see another genre success for Lifetime rather than a dud. And now that the official trailer has been released weve got even more reason to hope for something special.

Thanks to a somewhat suspect series of sub-genres born out of horror cinema’s tendency to descend into an exploitative pit of B-Movie mediocrity, to many the genre at large has lost its bite over recent decades. Horror fans stand shaking atop a perilous precipice, debating whether to plummet into one of James Wan’s undeniably entertaining demon infested households – littered with creepy kids and their even creepier fondness for jump-scare inducing toy antiquities – or to skip dinner and experience a Smörgåsbord of torture porn delicacies. Thankfully studios aren’t as willing to give Eli Roth money these days and this ugly trend has been somewhat curbed – minus the upcoming The Green Inferno, which, in all fairness, looks rather tasty. Also, don’t forget the wealth of found footage which lay hidden in darkened attics and dank cellars, because in an age of Hi-def, Blu-ray movies and instant streaming services,...

Heading our way September 2nd is Maplecroft, the first book in the new "The Borden Dispatches" series from award-winning author Cherie Priest. It offers an inventive and daring take on the story of Lizzie Borden.
Maplecroft casts the infamous axe swinger not as a murderer, but as a hero struggling to save the world from an evil that lives in the ocean depths off the shores of Massachusetts. Think Lizzie Borden with elements from H.P. Lovecraft... how can you go wrong?
Priest made a name for herself in 2009 with Boneshaker, an ingenious mix of alternate history and zombie fiction that heralded the rebirth of steampunk. Hammer acquired the rights back in November 2011, but there hasn't been an update since the initial announcement. We'll keep our eyes open for more on that as well as future "Dispatches."

Stars: Christina Ricci, Clea DuVall, Gregg Henry, Stephen McHattie, Shawn Doyle, Sara Botsford, Hannah Anderson, Andrea Runge, Billy Campbell | Written by Stephen Kay | Directed by Nick Gomez
Massachusetts director Nick Gomez (Drowning Mona) is more used to working on television shows than feature films and it shows in Lizzie Borden Took an Axe, a Lifetime television movie based on the life of Lizzie Borden.
Christina Ricci is an actress I enjoy sometimes, but her performances range from good to poor depending on the movie she is in, and sadly this is not one of her better roles. The cast isn’t a bad one, with Clea Duvall appearing as Lizzie’s sister, Emma Borden. It just all feels very forced, which is a shame because the tale is one that, with better casting, a deeper budget, more delicate writing and a steadier director’s hand, could be very good indeed.

From philandering president to criminal polygamist -- What would Olivia Pope think?
"Scandal" star Tony Goldwyn -- President Fitzgerald Grant himself -- is set to play the infamous Warren Jeffs in Lifetime's upcoming movie "Outlaw Prophet," THR reports. The film tells the true story of Jeffs, the leader of a Fundamentalist Mormon polygamist sect who ranked on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted List for more than a year. After eluding authorities, he was ultimately apprehended by a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper.
"Outlaw Prophet" is based on Stephen Singular's best-selling book "When Men Become Gods," which tracks Jeffs' rise to power following the death of his father, Rulon Jeffs. In case you missed it:
Flowers in the Attic (Lifetime Original Movie) – Saturday, January 18, 8 Pm
Lifetime struck gold with their remake/adaptation of V.C. Andrews’ classic Gothic story Flowers in the Attic, bringing the plot to the silver screen with a young but talented cast of characters that includes Heather Graham in a role that actually allows her to be wooden!
It’s a competently written and directed event that highlights most of the plot of the original; however, it does also feel slightly outdated thanks to the more ridiculous aspects of Andrews’ story. Still, Lifetime accomplished what it set out to do with the film,...

Lifetime’s chilling tale of real-life murder suspect Lizzie Borden more than lived up to our expectations.

‘Lizzie Borden Takes An Ax’ Review: Christina Ricci Carries Lifetime’s Latest Guilty Pleasure Take Our Poll
Christina Ricci masterfully tackles the role of real-life murder suspect Lizzie Borden, who stood accused of killing both of her parents in 1892 — although “killing” is far too mild a description of what Lizzie was thought to have done. You may recall the following jump-rope rhyme, totally appropriate for little children:
Lizzie Borden took an axe
And gave her mother forty whacks.
When she saw what she had done
She gave her father forty-one.
