When animal fairy Fawn (voice of Ginnifer Goodwin) makes friends with a strange beast never seen before in Pixie Hollow, she sets out to convince Tinkerbell (voice of Mae Whitman) and her fairy friends—Iridessa (voice of Raven-Symoné), Silvermist (voice of Lucy Liu), Rosetta (voice of Megan Hilty), and Vidia (voice of Pamela Adlon)—that Gruff is harmless. However, scout fairy Nyx (voice of Rosario Dawson) has learned from the archives that Gruff is a NeverBeast who awakens once every thousand years and destroys Pixie Hollow.

Tinkerbell and the Legend of the NeverBeast is the sixth full-length movie in the Disney Fairies series, preceded by Tinker Bell (2008) (2008), Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure (2009) (2009), Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue (2010) (2010), Secret of the Wings (2012) (2012), and The Pirate Fairy (2014) (2014). The character of Tinker Bell was first introduced in the 1904 play, Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up and again in the 1911 novel, Wendy and Peter, both by Scottish author, Sir James Barrie. The screenplay for Tinkerbell and the Legend of the NeverBeast was a collaborative effort by numerous writers, including Steve Loter, Tom Rogers, Robert Schooley, Mark McCorkle, and Kate Kondell.

Using his spit as mortar, Gruff is building four tall rock towers, one in each season (summer, autumn, winter, spring) of Pixie Hollow.

After saving Pixie Hollow from the green storm, Gruff hangs around for a while helping to lift and pound things and to uproot fallen trees, but he becomes sleepier and sleepier. Fawn sadly realizes that it's time for Gruff to hibernate, so the fairies prepare a sleeping chamber for him and kiss him goodnight. In the final scene, Gruff closes his eyes.
