Kevin James, Benjamin Pajak, Banks Pierce, and Alan Ritchson in Playdate (2025)
A routine playdate between suburban dads turns into an explosive thrill ride in 'Playdate,' the new action-comedy that pairs unlikely duo Kevin James and Alan Ritchson. In the first trailer for the Prime Video movie, an ordinary afternoon spirals into chaos when James's hapless accountant and Ritchson's mysteriously skilled stay-at-home dad find themselves targeted by professional hitmen, leading to some outrageous action sequences involving everything from minivan chases to playground warfare.

Alan Ritchson, who rocketed to stardom as the lead in Prime Video's hit series "Reacher," brings his action hero physicality to the comedy genre, while Kevin James ("King of Queens," 'Paul Blart: Mall Cop') returns to his everyman comedy roots. The film is helmed by Luke Greenfield, known for directing action-comedy hybrid 'Let's Be Cops' and 'The Girl Next Door,' and features a supporting cast including Isla Fisher ('Wedding Crashers') and Sarah Chalke ("Scrubs").

'Playdate' premieres on Prime Video globally on November 12, 2025.

    Goofy, over-the-top action/buddy/sci-fy story.

We found this movie streaming on Prime. We settled in and about the 10 to 15 minutes mark I was so annoyed with the silliness that I considered abandoning it. But I didn't and ultimately I found it entertaining enough, mainly because of the two stars, Ritchson and James.

It is hard to summarize without spoilers but Alan Ritchson is Jeff Eamon, new guy in the neighborhood seemingly desperate for a new best friend. He encounters Kevin James as Brian Jennings at a local park, each has a young boy with them and playing catch. But right away we notice something is very off kilter with Jeff's son, "CJ", which we find has a somewhat sinister meaning.

Anyway much of it becomes a buddy movie with the two men and the two young boys running away from dangerous men. Ritchson and James play well off each other. I can't give this a high rating, I'd probably never recommend it to anyone I know, but at least I was entertained and the end credits include a few funny outtakes.

    Funnier than I expected

Saw someone review that this was just absolutely terrible with 1 star - congratulations you were unique today.

This movie is meant to be dumb and I honestly thought it was really funny. I first watched Alan Ritchson in Blue Mountain State and will always remember him as the dude with the micro pen*s in New Girl. Then Reacher came along and I enjoy him in that.

So it was kind of hilarious to see him acting as the best of both those worlds.

This is a movie, not a fact-checking documentary. It's meant to be fun. And it was so stupid that it had me laughing out loud. Yall need to quit being so serious.

    Surprisingly funny

This is why comedies aren't made anymore because when they do make a good one people just hate on it. It has dark humor, which we never get to see anymore. I can't stand Kevin James but I liked him much better as the straight man. Alan Ritchson killed it. They actually worked well together. I was scream laughing when he fought the kid at the park. I did not expect anything and really enjoyed it. People are so bitter and miserable all they do is go online hating on every book, game, movie, show, recipe or video. Look how bad cult classics did at first every time. Don't listen to the immediate bad reviews, they are seldom right.

    Fun enough streaming movie

Playdate (2025) is an action buddy comedy movie on Prime Video and it follows a stay-at-home dad accepting a playdate invitation from another stay-at-home dad who turns out to be a loose cannon. I just got done watching the movie and it was really fun.

Positives for Playdate (2025): This movie is exactly what you're getting from a streaming movie. Alan Ritchson and Kevin James are a fun duo and they bounce off each other very well. The comedy and action is done very well. The movie moves at quick pace that is easy to keep up with. And finally, this is a good hangout movie to watch at home on the weekend.

Negatives for Playdate (2025): This movie has a basic enough story that is predictable from the start. The villains aren't interesting and they're not cartoonish. The movie is also basically background noise for other activities that you could be doing. And finally, the movie doesn't have any standout moments to make it memorable.

Overall, Playdate (2025) is a fun enough but standard streaming action comedy movie that gets the job done.

Very fun time if you know what to expect

This film is not well made, bad CGI, shaky cam, bad green screens and you can see the camera man in the reflection of a car. However, this film has one purpose make you smile and laugh and it certainly did that. Ritchson and James have great chemistry and have many laugh out loud moments. This may be a generous rating but I had too fun a time watching this to give it any less despite its flaws. Also has great actors in supporting roles which definitely helps.
