Anyone Else But Me highlighted how many talented collaborators Joel Haver has gained throughout his years as a consistent YouTuber. While viewers will recognize plenty of the cast members from several viral online shorts, this satirical crime story of mistaken identity, false personas, and acting ambition, this feature-length release felt grander in its scope and intentions. With Blake Rosier as an actor who took a class exercise a little bit too seriously, this DIY movie progressed with plenty of tension and suspense as he&#39;s embroiled in a hostage situation after presenting himself as a multi-millionaire Bitcoin investor. With an enjoyable mix of comedy, crime, and some self-aware humor about the vapid aspirations and insecurities of wannabe actors, Anyone Else But Me felt far more scripted and mapped out than a lot of Joel Harver&#39;s other, more improvised work. The theme of overlapping identity continually crops up as Rosier&#39;s character finds himself increasingly out of his depth as kidnapped try to extorte him for a $2 million dollar ransom. Overall, this was a highly accomplished release, especially considering the mind boggling tight time schedule Haver was under trying to make and release 12 feature films in one year.

Anyone Else But Me

I think this film, for the first two-thirds of it, is another example of how Joel and co. Exceed when the emotion is tackled indirectly. Only when the emotional aspects are filtered through Joel&#39;s signature improv-style comedy, instead of standing on their own around it, do I think it works succeeds emotionally. Overall, though the humor on its own does a lot to keep me engaged -- even when I find it poorly juxtaposed. What also does a lot to keep me engaged is the masterfully converging plot. It is impressive how this narrative is crafted and how each character is given respect and real feelings. That being said, there are some technical aspects that kind of fluctuate through the first two-thirds. The shot composition is often good but at times seems a little like it&#39;s working with nothing to be interesting -- which very well might be the case -- but I think at that point it may be better to simplify the shot rather than try to overcomplicate it when there&#39;s not enough there to even do so. The audio also fluctuates in quality, which is obviously just due to the strap-on mics, but I find it can take me out at times. More attention to reducing the clothes rubbing and the wind blowing would&#39;ve automatically made me more involved in the story without feeling like I was watching a movie. Despite all that, though, the last 30 to 35 minutes of this film are really fantastic. Joel and co. Go on a bit of a winning streak in the last third. The climactic scene with the two Darrens is probably the highlight of the film and is fantastically shot as a handheld oner. The film also kind of takes a creeping and brooding feeling at times near the end -- particularly involving Trent&#39;s character, and the character he&#39;s last seen with (and the way the scene ends makes me wonder about the outcome of that situation, in a good way). When it&#39;s not borderline disturbing towards the finale, the irony is biting but also kind of melancholic and real. In the end, nothing changes. But everyone realizes that maybe things should have.
