Dance Academy: The Movie has begun shooting in Sydney, almost six years to the day since the premiere of Dance Academy season one in 2010.

The series began with country girl Tara Webster (Xenia Goodwin) travelling to Sydney to audition for a place at the National Academy of Dance, the top ballet school in Australia..

Pinnacle is eyeing a mid-year release, with a full trailer to be released early next month.

The company has previously distributed Predestination, Healing, Return to Nim.s Island and the John Jarratt thriller Stalkher, making genre fare like Red Billabong "a natural addition" to Pinnacle's slate, the company said in a statement.

Red Billabong stars Home and Away's Dan Ewing and Dance Academy's Tim Pocock, alongside Sophie Don, Jessica Green (Lightning Point), Ben Chisholm, John Reynolds, Emily Joy, James Straiton, Felix Williamson (Underbelly: Razor, The Great Gatsby) and Gregory Fryer (The Sapphires).

John Jarratt went to the pub to promote his new film StalkHer, touring a range of Australian outback hotels where prerelease screenings were followed by Q&A sessions and karaoke competitions. At least he got the choice of venue right, given audiences will want a stiff drink – probably several – if they manage to sit through all of the veteran actor’s behind–the–camera debut.

This rancid battle–of–the–sexes chamber piece, co-directed and co-produced by Jarratt and Kaarin Fairfax (who both star in the lead roles), is billed as a “comedy thriller”.

John Jarratt: The happy go lucky guy is an impersonation of my father who was a fun loving outback, knock about, guy. Just add menacing and maniacal and you’ve made Mick.

Wolf Creek and Django Unchained.s John Jarratt has written and plans to star in an Aussie comedy Western.

The title, Passing Winds, epitomises the irreverent approach. That's the name of a cattle property owned by Jarratt.s character. Craig McLachlan has agreed to play the bad guy who aims to gain control of the land which is rich in untapped gold. Steve Bisley will play a bounty hunter.

Jarratt describes the tone as a cross between Blazing Saddles and Crocodile Dundee. He will produce the film with Kris Maric and Craig Kocinski, his partners in production company Ozpix Entertainment.

No director has yet been signed but Jarratt would love to hire someone of the calibre of Mel Gibson, having admired his work in the Richard Donner-directed Maverick opposite Jodie Foster-- although he doubts Mel would be willing to spend six months in Oz working on the film.
