The dominance of superheroes at the box office has birthed its own tragedies. Case in point: The romantic comedy film.
In the 1990s, rom-com films like Pretty Women, As Good as it Gets, Sleepless in Seattle, and Notting Hill all made the year-end box office top 10 in the 90s and that would be unthinkable today.
As a result, these films have largely been relegated to streaming as TV movies of sorts.
The good news is that the genre has been given room to modernize, become more racially diverse and experimental (Eurovision).
On the experimental end is the wonderfully high-concept Palm Springs.
Set in the California resort town on the day of a wedding, the story tells of a slacker, Nyles (Andy Samberg), who gets stuck in a time loop whereas the same day repeats itself every time he goes to sleep.
This would be a facsimile of Groundhog Day unworthy...

The release of a new international trailer for Paramount’s Sonic The Hedgehog movie has seen excitement for the video game adaptation soar to all new heights over the last 24 hours.
The film, which has pulled through a troubled several months following the overwhelmingly negative reception Sonic’s original design received, has regained some goodwill from fans of the lightning-fast hedgehog recently for committing to a total redesign. The general consensus on Sonic’s new look has been outwardly positive, but even that enthusiasm pales in comparison to Baby Sonic’s instant rise fo fame.
The Mandalorian‘s Baby Yoda now has some competition in the cute department, it would seem. Check out some of the early reactions to Sonic’s younger self below:

It’s only Tuesday, but longtime producing partners Rashida Jones and partner Will McCormack are already having quite the eventful week. This morning, it was announced that the TNT series “Claws” — executive produced by the duo’s Le Train Train production company — was renewed for its fourth and final season. But apparently where one show ends, another begins, as Variety reported that AMC has just picked up a new pilot executive-produced by the pair — the quite pointedly titled “Kevin Can Go F— Himself” — to series.
Created by Eliot Lawrence (“Welcome to Me”) with Sharon Lee Watson (“Chicago P.D.”) and Emily Silver (“Bones”) functioning as showrunners, the flamboyant and sometimes surreal “Claws” originally premiered in June 2017 and stars Emmy nominee Niecy Nash as Desna Simms, an entrepreneur and leader of a crew of strip mall nail technicians-turned-mobsters in the trashy coastal Florida town of Palmetto (aka “Palmghetto”). Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

In early October, less than a week after a bombshell New York Times report exposed decades of alleged sexual assault and harassment from then-The Weinstein Company head Harvey Weinstein, his brother and business partner Bob Weinstein hit back with some strong words. “My brother Harvey is obviously a very sick man,” Bob Weinstein told TMZ at the time. “I’ve urged him to seek immediate professional help because he is in dire need of it. His remorse and apologies to the victims of his abuse are hollow. He said he would go away for help and has yet to do so.”
Bob Weinstein also responded to a rumor that perhaps he was the one who leaked portions of the story, all the better to oust his brother from TWC. “He has proven himself to be a world class liar and now rather than seeking help he is looking to blame others,...

Celebrities aren’t the only ones speaking out against Harvey Weinstein. Bob Weinstein, Harvey’s brother and the co-founder of Miramax and The Weinstein Company, is condemning his sibling’s alleged history of sexual harassment in new statements given exclusively to TMZ. Harvey has been the subject of bombshell reports from The New York Times and The New Yorker in which dozens of women have come forward alleging the studio executive of sexual harassment. Three women, including Asia Agrento, claim Harvey raped them.
“My brother Harvey is obviously a very sick man,” Bob said. “I’ve urged him to seek immediate professional help because he is in dire need of it. His remorse and apologies to the victims of his abuse are hollow. He said he would go away for help and has yet to do so.”

In the age of peak TV, we’ve gotten to see many series which are constructed to be satisfying after just one season of storytelling. But it’s important to remember that this is a relatively new phenomenon, that all too often, potentially great shows will get cancelled before getting the chance to reach their full potential.

When Robert Bresson, in his early 80s at the time, chose to adapt Leo Tolstoy’s short story “The Forged Coupon,” he crafted an efficient, taut film by using only the first part of Tolstoy’s tale, ending when Yvon, our central character, commits an act of horrific violence. Bresson doesn’t venture into Tolstoy’s second part, where, in prison, Yvon seeks redemption through religion. What we get, then, is L’argent, which translates directly to “money,” Bresson’s nihilistic, final film. Redemption doesn’t feel like a remote possibility. Bresson’s films are often bleak, but what’s surprising is that Bresson subverts all moments leaning toward grace in this brisk 84-minute film. Yet, for all its relentless darkness, L’argent is a wonder to behold, invigorating and challenging.
L’argent begins with Norbert, a Parisian teen, asking his father for his monthly allowance. Father looks up, pulls out the money,...

When looking at a director’s canon upon its completion and in its entirety, the final piece of work is more often than not a key text in the broader understanding of the respective oeuvre. Be it something as relatively modern as Robert Altman’s masterpiece A Prairie Home Companion or a classic gem like the underrated Fritz Lang picture The Thousand Eyes Of Doctor Mabuse, these career-capping works may not be the director’s greatest achievement, but they see the director at a defining moment in their career.
However, few “final films” may be as singularly important in a director’s career as the one that would close out Robert Bresson’s legendary life, L’argent.
Now available on Criterion DVD and Blu-ray, L’argent tells the story of not so much a living character as it does an entity that runs roughshot over the lives of many. Similar...

We know that director Matt Reeves' The Batman won't be the last Batman film we see. I think fans just expect to see a trilogy of films when it comes to these kinds of characters. In a recent interview with Fandango, Reeves is asked if The Batman will launch and new trilogy for the character, and this is what he said:
"I have ideas about an arc, but really, the important thing is just to start... you have to start with one."
I'd be curious to know what this story arc is that he has in his mind. Chances are, if The Batman makes money, the fans love it, and Reeves enjoys working with Warner Bros., then he'd probably commit to following through with his story arc. Like he said, though, he's got to start with the first movie!

Hollywood is a fat, greedy bastard. It’s never good enough to have one great film. When there is a success, more are sure to follow. To be frank, it’s true in almost every capitalist-driven creative medium, but it really seems to take focus in Hollywood thanks to the huge risks that movies are for studio. When hundreds of millions of dollars are on the line, it’s easy to gravitate to things you know audiences are familiar with.
That being said, that doesn’t mean you can’t tell great stories in franchises. Just because an idea isn’t original doesn’t make the execution any less important. As we’ve seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and in Christopher Nolan’s excellent Dark Knight Trilogy, it’s possible to make real gold from existing properties. Perhaps the most relevant other example is Matt Reeves’ work on the...

Now that the filmmaker is coming off the one-two punch of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and the imminent War, all eyes are beginning to turn toward his next creature venture, which involves a dalliance with the DC Extended Universe. And for all of the drama that threatened to engulf The Batman four months ago – in short: Ben Affleck handed over directing duties to Matt Reeves – there is now a tangible sense of excitement swirling around the nascent project, which is expected to begin filming sometime next year, long after Justice League swoops into theaters in November.

Welcome to the final film of the aesthetically precise, rigorously austere Robert Bresson, an adaptation of a fateful tale by Leo Tolstoy visualized in Bresson’s frequently maddening personal style. An extreme artist makes a fascinatingly unyielding show: as with the classic paintings that Bresson admires, appreciation requires special knowledge.

It's a question we've been asking since the late Seventies: What exactly is David Lynch, and where the fuck did he come from?
With the ballyhooed resurrection of Twin Peaks, his legendary 1990-1991 TV series, Lynch yet again has stepped onto the cultural stage in a big way, and earned his profile as America's bullgoose weirdo. Magazine profiles once again try – and fail – to ascertain who exactly he is and what he's doing. Worse, they try to normalize him, place him within established cultural traditions and treating him like a wise man from Planet Whatzit.

If you were a kid in the 1980s and you liked action movies, chances are you rented No Retreat No Surrender at some point. It was like a more violent, high-octane take on The Karate Kid, with all-American teen Jason (Kurt McKinney) getting martial arts tutelage from no less than The Ghost Of Bruce Lee so he could kick the ass of a muscly Russian (Jean-Claude Van Damme in his first major role). As a kid, this movie was everything to me. It was a 15 cert so a little bit edgy, but still simple and wholesome enough for young me to totally ‘get it’. I had tears streaming down my face the first time I watched it, I was so invested in the final fight.

We know Chris Pratt is talented. From his role in Guardians of the Galaxy to Jurassic World, his ability to perfectly depict press tours on social media and adorably gush about his wife Anna Faris without making us want to vomit, he can pretty much do it all. But we didn't expect this... The actor stopped by BBC Radio 1 this week where he was given the challenge of prank phone calling an exotic pet shop to find out how to take care of a baby Groot. However, while most of us might take that as challenge enough, it wasn't his only task at hand. BBC Radio 1 also asked him to start every new sentence with each letter of the alphabet, from A to Z. Pratt dialed the phone and jumped on with an...

The superhero-adjacent comedy has been yanked from the Peacock Network’s Thursday night schedule, which means it’s as good as cancelled. The switch starts this week, with Superstore shifting into its former 8:30/7:30c timeslot. (Superstore repeats will run at 8 pm for the next two weeks.)

Powerless, starring Vanessa Hudgens as the research director at a security company that protects average citizens from the superhero battles raging all around them, has struggled in the ratings since its February 2 debut.

The Criterion Collection will venture to the Zone this July, and much more, as they’ve announced their new titles for the month. Andrei Tarkovsky‘s long-rumored sci-fi masterpiece Stalker will arrive with a new 2K restoration. The release will also include a new interview with author Geoff Dyer and newly translated English subtitles. Also arriving in July is Albert Brooks‘ satirical comedy Lost in America, featuring a new conversation with the director and Robert Weide, as well as interviews with the cast and crew.
One of the most notable releases of the month is Robert Bresson‘s masterful final film L’argent, which tracks a counterfeit bill through Paris, and the people it touches. Lastly, Roberto Rossellini‘s powerful War Trilogy is getting a much-deserved Blu-ray upgrade with new versions of Rome Open City, Paisan, and Germany Year Zero.
