- To be Chosen. That is the most important life goal in the strict religious environment of Katelijne. For her, though, reading and stories are much more important. Is she thus risking her 'Grace period'?
- A Dutch strict-Calvinist Bible Belt farmer is blessed with six industrious sons and cursed with a nosy daughter, Katelijne, who isn't content aiding mother in the household, but whose interventions on the farm spell trouble, even once by turning her twin baby brothers crazy with forbidden stories gets one to fall into a manure tank, only rescued at the cost of heroic grandpa's life. Firstborn Christiaan is a born leader, devoted to the farm and his family, with a healthy taste for forbidden -albeit mostly innocent- fun with girls, yet Katelijne's bad influence even gets both of them spanked for attending the 'heathen' fun fair. Duly feeling useless at the farm, and despite the brainwashing 'Christian' school's curriculum of seeing devils in almost anything, she turns to literature as an inspiration to seek a way far from Christiaan's heritage.—KGF Vissers
