For a second consecutive weekend, Captain America: Brave New World held onto the top spot of the box-office weekend, although this weekend’s lead of $14 million was considerably smaller than last week’s $75.5 million margin.
In its second weekend of release, Captain America: Brave New World brought in $28.2 million for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, giving the film a cumulative total of $141.2 million. Meanwhile, Neon saw The Monkey debut in second place with $14.2 million taken in over the weekend. After claiming second place last weekend, Sony Pictures Releasing’s Paddington in Peru fell to third place where it added $6.5 million, bringing its two-week tally to $25.3 million. The DreamWorks Distribution release Dog Man held steady in fourth place where it added $5.9 million over the weekend to lift its four-week total to $78.8 million. After Captain America: Brave New World opened with a decent – but underwhelming – $100 million four-day opening last weekend, many wondered whether or not the film would be able to sustain any kind of momentum at the box office. While the movie had a better week-to-week hold than The Marvels (which fell a disastrous 78%) and Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania (-70%), the 68% week-to-week decline is still quite steep. With a $141.2 million total, it looks unlikely that the film will even be able to crack $200 million domestically unless it can rebound at the box office somewhat next weekend.
Given the film’s rumoured price tag, which could be as high as $300 million if you consider all the reshoots and the subpar B-minus CinemaScore, Marvel is no doubt disappointed in the movie’s reception, which places added pressure on both Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four: First Steps to perform, lest the notion of superhero fatigue really start to stick.

New films are commonly being shuttled off to home formats within days of appearing in cinemas. Here’s where we are in 2025…
In the US this week, two early 2025 minor-to-middling hits are arriving on video on demand services to rent. Dog Man was a chart topper with a $30m+ opening weekend just a fortnight ago, while Companion opened to strong reviews, and has barely been inside a cinema for three weeks.
Both are available now to watch at home via digital services if you live in America.
This is the latest fodder for what’s a growing hot topic in cinemas, with Anora director Sean Baker calling in a recent acceptance speech for the return of a 90 day minimum exclusivity window for cinemas. At the moment, most films struggle to get even 28 days, irrespective of how successful or otherwise they were. The cinema release sometimes feels like an inconvenience on...

The Sls Hotel in Beverly Hills was filled with pride and tears of joy on Monday night as the American Black Film Festival recognized five actors for their contributions to cinema at the 2025 ABFF Honors.
Captain America: Brave New World star Anthony Mackie commenced the awards presentation portion of the ceremony — hosted by comedian Zainab Johnson — by recalling words of wisdom his Marvel film co-star Giancarlo Esposito — known for early roles in Spike Lee’s School Daze and Do the Right Thing and most recently Breaking Bad, Kaleidoscope and The Gentlemen — imparted to him when he was an aspiring actor.

With movie theaters struggling to pull in the same sized audiences they used to pull in before the pandemic, Hollywood has made considerable changes to their theatres-to-home media windows. Now, if a movie isn’t a financial hit, studios routinely release films to PVOD within weeks of their theatrical debut to capitalize on the publicity of theatrical campaigns. We’ve seen this happen over and over again with movies that didn’t perform up to expectations (such as The Fall Guy), and now New Line’s buzzy horror flick Companion makes its VOD debut only eighteen days after its theatrical release.
Directed by Drew Hancock, Companion is produced by Barbarian’s Zach Cregger, and stars Sophie Thatcher as a young woman on a weekend getaway with her tech-bro boyfriend, played by The Boys’ Jack Quaid. Of course, there’s a Major twist the trailers spoiled, but if you don’t know what it is,...

“Nosferatu” (Focus) and “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” (Paramount), two of the biggest hits last Christmas, are both coming to their studios’ streaming platforms less than two months after their theatrical release. That is a radical decrease in the amount of normal time before home subscribers can see a hit film for no extra charge.
In a week that saw four different films released no earlier than January 12 make the VOD top 10 lists, Mel Gibson’s “Flight Risk” (Lionsgate) currently is the most popular. At Netflix, the Italian-set rom-com “La Dolce Villa” capitalized on Valentine’s Day to take the #1 spot.
With the absence of any same-week streaming charts for all services, IndieWire normally concentrates on top 10 charts for VOD (which usually is the first stage of home availability) and Netflix’s same-day list. But the gravity of these two announcements overshadows our normal coverage.

Although the same film adorned the top of the box-office weekend top ten for two consecutive weeks prior, a new film stands firmly in the number one spot as Captain America: Brave New World took in $75.5 million more than its closest competition just prior to the Presidents’ Day holiday.
In its first weekend of release, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures’ latest Marvel release, Captain America: Brave New World easily took control of the box-office weekend top ten by bringing in $88.5 million over the pre-holiday weekend. This was more than adequate to best second-place finisher Paddington in Peru which debuted over the weekend to the tune of $13 million for Sony Pictures Releasing. Meanwhile, last weekend’s second-place film, Heart Eyes, dropped to third where it brough in $10 million for Sony Pictures Releasing, raising its two-week total to $21.5 million. Led by “Captain America: Brave New World” (Disney), the conjunction of Valentine’s Day falling on Friday and the Presidents Day weekend boosted U.S./Canada grosses to by far the best in 2025 so far. With over half ($88.5 million) of the weekend’s box office draw going to the latest Marvel release, theaters took in around $156 million. That’s 50 percent better than any weekend so far this year.
That counts as double relief for theaters. The needed strong total raises year-to-date numbers to 22 percent ahead of last year so far, and it also comes with reaffirmation that Marvel remains vital.
With its B- Cinemascore, the worst for an MCU film, as well as mostly bad reviews, there was real concern the first of three franchise releases in 2025 might fall flat. How it holds remains to be seen, but despite the headwinds it seemed to face, its gross is at or above expectations.

It looks like Captain America: Brave New World is posting our first $100 million opener of the year, even if it comes with a bit of an asterisk next to it. While, yes, Disney can boast that Brave New World has opened to $100 million, the caveat is that the opening is based on the box office results for the entire holiday weekend (tomorrow is President’s Day), and that the three-day opening is a comparatively modest $88.5 million (according to Deadline). That’s pretty close to what we predicted earlier this week and a far cry from the usual $100 million plus weekends Marvel was chalking up in their heyday, which seems to have ended.
Think of it this way – two years ago Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania made $120 million over the same President’s Day weekend, and people called it a flop. Brave New World, with all the reshoots that went into it,...

“Saturday Night Live” has given us plenty of comedy legends over the years, but it’s important to remember one thing — it’s also given us a lot of musical bangers, and not just from the incredible five-decade roster of musical guests.
In fact, “SNL” has not only taken advantage of the talents of its musically inclined hosts, but it’s also revealed several actors who are talented singers. Fortunately, they’ve also been very committed to the bit.
So, with “SNL” celebrating its 50th Anniversary, we thought it was only fair to round-up a playlist for you to pregame the show with.
Here are 11 of the funniest and catchiest “SNL” songs (in no particular order).
(Do It On My) Twin Bed (2013)
“SNL” has had a slew of excellent musical numbers centered around coming home for the holidays, but few are as catchy as “(Do It On My) Twin Bed.

One of Them Days is indeed about one of those days when a whole lot of things go wrong for our girls—Alyssa and Dreux, played by Sza and Keke Palmer, respectively. Both the actors pretty much carry the story on their shoulders and help all the situational comedy skits and jokes land right. The result is a movie that seems a lot like the kind of thing Sean Baker would make, but maybe a bit too loud and a little less deep in comparison. That’s not a criticism, by the way; I’m just describing the nature of it. There’s also a hint of a caper comedy element in it that I really dig here. The movie ends quite neatly, but if you still have any confusion, this article is going to clear that for you.

Ending a five-week trend of a new film claiming the top spot of the box-office weekend, Dog Man held onto the number one position for a second consecutive weekend, albeit by only a margin of only $5.2 million.
In its second weekend of release, DreamWorks Distribution’s Dog Man remained in first place with $13.7 million. This was more than enough to best second-place finisher, Heart Eyes, which debuted in second place with $8.5 million for Sony Pictures Releasing. Meanwhile, Universal Pictures saw its Love Hurts debut in third place with $5.8 million over the weekend. Dropping a spot from last weekend, Mufasa: The Lion King landed in fourth place where it took in $3.9 million for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, bringing its eight-week total to $235.2 million. Despite falling from second to fifth place this weekend, Companion managed to bring in $3.02 million in its second weekend of release to lift its overall total to $15.5 million for Warner Brothers.

If it makes anyone feel better, the $55 million total box office was the best for any Super Bowl weekend since 2020. It also continues year to date improvement, besting 2024 by close to 50 percent.
“Dog Man” (Universal) repeated as #1 with $13.7 million but unexpectedly dropped 62 percent in its second weekend after a surprisingly strong opening. “Heart Eyes” (Sony) and “Love Hurts” (Universal), two new wide releases, combined managed $15 million.
The DreamWorks animated film opened about the same as “The Wild Robot,” with a similar A Cinemascore. It was unlikely that “Dog Man” would reach the $144 million “The Wild Robot” attained, but based on precedent (similar films usually triple their openings), it seemed like it could become a $100 million grosser. With its steep drop, $85 million feels more likely.

With its steep drop, $85 million feels more likely.
The year has seen nine non-franchise studio wide releases to date, most mid-sized or lower budgets, but only “Dog Man” and “One of Them Days” (Sony...

The notoriously slow Super Bowl weekend lived up to its dire reputation at the box office this weekend, with neither of the weekend’s two promising new releases, Heart Eyes and Love Hurts, managing to attract much of an audience. As we predicted earlier this week, Captain Underpants spinoff Dog Man didn’t have any trouble keeping its paws on the top spot. However, the 62% week-to-week drop-off isn’t anything to write home about, with the general consensus being that the $13.7 million weekend is a disappointment. However, with a $54 million gross, the film will easily turn a nice profit for Universal and Dreamworks, although it might not earn enough to merit a sequel at this point. Woof.
Heart Eyes, a pretty darn good rom-com/slasher mash-up, opened much softer than expected with $8.5 million. The B-minus CinemaScore isn’t bad for a horror flick, but it seems this won’t launch...

Sunday Am: In a motion picture industry crunched by streaming, where studios are watching their ledgers closer than ever, Super Bowl weekend might be worth the spend to drop a tentpole trailer during the big game ($8M for 30 seconds of time this year), but it sure as hell isn’t a place to open a movie anymore.
True, more often than not, Super Bowl weekend is the frame where titles open to single digits, and studios have used the frame over and over again as a dumping ground. This year wasn’t any different.
However, studios have been able to bust through in the past with horror movies and female skewing titles. The biggest opening title ever during Super Bowl weekend remains Disney’s Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: The Best of Both Worlds Concerts back in 2008 with $31.1M. The last time a No. 1 movie crossed $30M over Super Bowl...

Led by Marvel’s “Captain America: Brave New World” (Disney), February will continue the three-month trend of improved box office compared to the previous year. By the end of February, we might be 25 percent of 2024.
Nobody expects that to continue for the full year. If it did, grosses for U.S./Canada theaters would reach $11.5 billion. In 2018 we saw about $12 billion — at current ticket prices, that equates to $15 billion.
January rose 10 percent from last year, but more than two thirds of that gross came from holdovers. “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera” (Lionsgate) was the best of a weak group with $33 million in January, but Universal’s “Dog Man” and Sony’s One of Them Days” will each far exceed that total.
A total of around $550 million in February looks doable; last year was an abysmal $375 million. In the lead will be the new “Captain America,” which is also the first...

Last weekend, Dreamworks Animation‘s Dog Man took a bite out of the top spot at the domestic box office while howling at the moon with $36M for its opening weekend. Drew Hancock’s psychological thriller Companion trailed behind Dog Man with a pooper-scooper despite favorable reviews (including one from JoBlo’s Tyler Nichols) for a $9.5M opening. As a spinoff of the Captain Underpants books by Dav Pilkey, Dog Man features a starry cast of voice talent, including Pete Davidson, Isla Fisher, Lil Rel Howery, Poppy Liu, and Ricky Gervais. The half-man, half-dog, all-cop animated comedy stands to lift its leg on the number one slot at the box office this weekend with an additional $16M-$20M, even as Super Bowl Lix looks to tackle a majority of audiences.

The writers of the HBO comedy Insecure, Issa Rae and Syreeta Singleton, have announced that they’ve been developing a remake of F. Gary Gray’s heist film Set It Off back in 2019. Little news has been revealed since then and both have gone on to other projects. Notably, Singleton is recently coming off of the comedy, One of Them Days, which our own Tyler Nichol enjoyed as he said in his review, “I tend to be a tough sell when it comes to comedy and One of Them Days managed to really tickle my funny bone. The laughs per minute were high, with several subtle jokes that are easy to miss. It does what any great comedy does: blend comedy with emotional stakes for a fun time.”

As Syreeta Singleton continues a successful theatrical run for her comedy two-hander “One of Them Days,” she gave TheWrap an update on her upcoming reboot of the 1996 crime-action film “Set It Off.”
“It’s going to be a good one. It’s something that we were very careful about, because it’s ‘Set It Off,’ and we want to make sure we do it right. I feel like it’s a story that people are going to be really, really excited about,” Singleton explained. “We’ve infused a lot of humor into it in an organic way. But it was like, when you get four Black women together, how you not gon’ laugh? Even in the middle of robbing some s–t.”

For a fifth consecutive weekend, a new film adorns the top of the box-office weekend as Dog Man debuted in first place by the sizable margin of $26.5 million.
In its first weekend in release, Dog Man took in $36.0 million for DreamWorks Distribution and easily claimed the top spot of this week’s top ten. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. saw its Companion debut in second place with $9.5 million. Last weekend’s second-place film, Mufasa: The Lion King however, dropped a spot to third place this weekend where it brought in $6.1 million for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, giving the film a seven-week total of $229.5 million. Sony Pictures Releasing saw One of Them Days fall one spot to claim fourth place this weekend with $6.0 million in its third week of release, bringing its overall total to $34.5 million. No Other Land, the Palestinian-Israeli Oscar-nominated documentary deemed untouchable by US buyers, scored a mighty platform debut at the US box office over the weekend.
The film chronicling a West Bank community’s efforts to endure and resist the Israel Defense Forces’demolition programme earned an estimated $26,100 at Film Forum in New York and was booked by the producers in association with Cinetic and mTuckman Media – an excellent result for a documentary.
The collective comprising Basel Adra, Hamdan Ballal, Yuval Abraham, and Rachel Szor co-directed the film and the plan is to expand the footprint into 10 markets next weekend, including Los Angeles.

Currently, box office is 14 percent ahead of 2024. What’s the key for February continuing that momentum? For now, it’s originality. At $36 million, “Dog Man” (Universal) grossed substantially over expectations, pushing the weekend to $87 million — better than 2024.
The DreamWorks Animation film had the biggest opening of any non-franchise cartoon feature since 2019 (not counting the already established “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”). To be fair: “Dog Man” is a spinoff character that emerged from the “Captain Underpants” universe. However, Dog Man did not make an appearance in the 2017 “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie” (which has been the only one to date) and Universal marketing didn’t note the connection.
Its initial estimate just edges out “The Wild Robot,” which went on to collect $143 million. “Dog Man” also got an A Cinemascore. At a very thrifty cost of $40 million, it’s a major winner for Universal.

The weekend numbers are in, and as expected, Dog Man easily topped the box office, with the Captain Underpants spin-off outperforming all expectations – including our own. The Universal/Dreamworks animated film made a solid $36 million this weekend, paving the way for a long run at the box office, with not too much in the way of competition for family audiences coming out until Captain America: Brave New World, which comes out on the President’s Day holiday weekend.
However, New Line’s Companion, which is earning buzzy reviews and atypically strong word-of-mouth for a genre film (it earned a B+ CinemaScore), had a disappointing opening, only making $9.5 million. Hollywood execs are no doubt scratching their heads over why a buzzy horror flick starring Yellowjackets’ Sophie Thatcher and The Boys’ Jack Quaid didn’t manage to open higher, especially given that it marks the directorial debut of Barbarian writer Drew Hancock.

“Dog Man” enjoyed a barking good start at the domestic box office, collecting a leading $36 million from 3,885 North American cinemas in its first weekend of release.
Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s animated canine-crime-fighting film, set in the “Captain Underpants” universe, opened at the higher end of expectations thanks to great buzz and pent-up demand for family offerings. Moviegoers awarded the film an “A” grade on CinemaScore, signaling a long tail in theaters.
Another newcomer, Warner Bros. and New Line’s satirical sci-fi thriller “Companion,” debuted at No. 2 with $9.5 million from 3,285 theaters. The R-rated film added a soft $5.5 million from 60 overseas markets for a grand total of $15 million. Still, those ticket sales are solid since “Companion” cost an economical $10 million to produce (not including its marketing spend). With stellar reviews (94% on Rotten Tomatoes) and solid audience feedback (“B+” on CinemaScore), box office watchers suggest the film could become a late-January/ early-February sleeper hit.

[The story contains spoilers for the fifth and final season of Insecure.]
Issa Rae says some Insecure fans are still unhappy with how the show ended, even years later.
The Emmy-winning series, which ended in December 2021 following a five-season fun, followed the everyday and sometimes awkward experiences of modern-day Black women. Rae not only co-created Insecure but she also starred in it.
The show concluded with Rae’s character Issa Dee rekindling her romantic relationship with Lawrence Walker (Jay Ellis). However, some fans weren’t too happy with this renewed romance as the pair had an on-again, off-again relationship throughout the series. Lawrence had also fathered a child with another woman, Condola Hayes (Christina Elmore), around the same time that he and Issa were discussing a future together.
Rae recently told People magazine that even four years later, “people are really mad about” how the hit show ended.

Though Issa Rae’s seminal HBO dramedy Insecure has long since wrapped, with a final episode airing in late 2021, the multi-hyphenate is very aware that some fans are displeased with the ending — even to the point of asking for reshoots.
In a new interview with People, the Barbie star admitted she knows that “people are really mad about” how the show concluded. After five seasons spanning 2016 through 2021, the perennially awkward and self-titled Issa Dee opts to rekindle her romance with on-again, off-again beau Lawrence (Jay Ellis) to the chagrin of many devoted viewers, who had long since dismissed the ex as no good, especially after he fathered a child with another woman, Condola (Christina Elmore). Ellis’ character is so polarizing that the actor revealed in 2020 that he has been “punched,” “slapped” and “cussed out” due to his portrayal.

Who let “Dog Man” out? Universal Pictures did, and the party is nice, the party is pumpin’ for the studio, as the DreamWorks Animation caper earned $10.8 million across Friday and preview screenings. That’s the biggest opening day gross yet for this still very young year.
Playing in 3,885 locations, “Dog Man” is now fetching what’s projected to be a $35 million opening weekend. That’d handily outperform the $23 million debut for “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie,” which adapted another series of graphic novels by children’s author Dav Pilkey and was released in 2017 by the now-Disney-owned 20th Century Fox.
That’s a very good start for “Dog Man,” which already had an achievable threshold for success being produced at a $40 million budget, a much more modest investment than most studio animated features. Reviews lean positive, but audiences flipped for it, with moviegoer survey firm Cinema Score polling opening crowds to a glowing A grade.

There is a wildcard at every wedding, but in the case of “You’re Cordially Invited,” there are two. And they are played by Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon.
Now streaming on Prime, the film directed by Nicholas Stoller centers on two families who unknowingly double book their weddings at the same small inn — an inn that can really only accommodate one wedding. For Jim (Ferrell), it is his daughter’s, and for Margot (Witherspoon), it is her sister’s. Naturally, the two immediately go insane, trying to force the other to back down.
Somehow, Ferrell and Witherspoon have never led a comedy together, but they are doing it now with a very familiar cast.
Here are the major players you need to know.

So what exactly is Dog Man anyway? That’s the question I asked myself when I first saw the trailer for Dreamworks/Universal’s latest animated flick, which should post the highest opening weekend since the holidays. A spin-off of the Captain Underpants books by Dav Pilkey, this sports an all-star cast that includes Pete Davidson, Isla Fisher, Rickey Gervais and more. The Captain Underpants movie was a solid hit, making over $70 million domestically, and with little in the way of competition for family audiences this weekend, it will easily top the box office with about $25 million.
It should be followed by New Line Cinema’s Companion, which is posting incredible reviews (our own Tyler Nichols loved it) but might have its opening muted by the fact that the trailers and reviews are purposefully vague in an effort to prevent spoiling the big twist the movie is supposed to have.

At its core, Dog Man is a warm and funny animated film about fathers and sons. However, the mix of simplistic animation and big gobs of absurdity makes book series so popular. The almost refreshing humor is the way it is tailored to a younger audience, who should be its demographic.
However, while not close to being perfect, Peter Hastings’s Dog Man adaptation of the uber-popular children’s graphic novel series has a lovely third act that hits home, bringing the story—and undoubtedly adults and their children—together.
The silliness and playfulness ring true, enhanced by the strong family messaging.

Weddings are such fertile ground for star-driven comedies it seems impossible to reinvent the sub-genre. A few manage to add a new spin to a setting that has been codified by the likes of “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” “Wedding Crashers,” and “27 Dresses.” “Palm Springs” is an excellent recent example, for instance. “Anyone But You” was less creative but more financially successful thanks to the hottie pair of Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney.
Into this fray enters “You’re Cordially Invited,” written and directed by Nicholas Stoller, whose efforts include “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “Neighbors.” Destined for streaming on Prime Video (like so many comedies these days), this matrimonial romp stars Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon. While it’s often funny thanks to an excellent supporting cast, it also drags on too long, and comes to an unearned rom-com conclusion. Let’s just say Ferrell and Witherspoon do not ignite the screen opposite one another,...

A night out with your best friends is still the best night ever.
I saw “One of Them Days” in theaters over the weekend and I have to recommend it. It’s a buddy comedy that follows two best friends (Keke Palmer and Sza) who are trying to make rent before they’re kicked out of their apartment. The film is funny and heartfelt – the two leads have a ton of chemistry, you believe they’ve been best friends for a decade – and the plot is wild and entertaining. Ultimately, it’s about what buddy comedies are about: a great friendship that makes each person better. It got me thinking about other awesome buddy comedies out there – so, here are my favorite top seven buddy comedy movies you can stream right now.

January is typically a rough time for new releases, and the box office was January-ing particularly hard this past weekend. While Philly, Kansas City, and Taylor Swift were celebrating their tickets to the Super Bowl, their respective fans weren't buying tickets to the movies. This weekend's films brought in $70.2 million across the board,...

Following the elongated holiday weekend seven days ago, the last few days saw a new film climb to the top of the box-office weekend for the fourth week in a row as Flight Risk managed to cling to the number one slot by a margin of $3.3 million.
In its first weekend of release, Lionsgate’s Flight Risk debuted in first place of the weekend box office top ten with $12.0 million. This was just enough to keep Mufasa: The Lion King in second place with $8.7 million in its six week of release – still, the Walt Disney Studio Motion Pictures product sports an overall total of $221.1 million. Meanwhile, Sony Pictures Releasing saw its One of Them Days drop two spots to claim third place with $8.0 million over its second weekend in release, bringing its total to $25.1 million. Holding its ground in fourth place, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 made another $5.5 million over the weekend for Paramount Pictures,...

Keke Palmer will soon take the stage again on Broadway, but don’t hold your breath for a musical return — “anything can mess up these vocals,” she asserted on The Kelly Clarkson Show in a recent appearance.
While promoting her buddy comedy One of Them Days, in which she portrays the other half to Sza as the two try to scrounge up their rent money in the course of a measly 24 hours, the child actress-cum-media mogul teased her return to theater’s most-coveted district.
“This would be a play directed by Debbie Allen, about Muhammad Ali’s life and his relationship with Stepin Fetchit,” the two-time Emmy winner said. “And kind of just like, the exploration of our culture, what it means to have pride. I play Sonji, his first wife, Muhammad Ali’s first wife. So I’m very excited at the opportunity to do a play, I’ve never done one before!
