Like everyone else, when I first saw the trailer for Netflix’s “Hot Frosty” — about a snowman who comes to life to charm a single woman in a small town — I groaned and giggled at the same time. It felt like a parody of the cheesy Christmas TV movie genre, the kind of simplistic, home-for-the-holidays fun that Hallmark has long championed and Netflix has successfully showcased to a younger audience over the last handful of years. I figured I’d half-watch at some point while also imbibing in some holiday cheer when doom-scrolling got a little too bleak.

Well.

I finally viewed the 90-minute smash starring Dustin Milligan as the titular Frosty and Lacey Chabert, and while it’s not winning any Emmys, it’s a sweet, surprisingly charming outing that should be able to hold its own entertaining both your parents and any teens in your life this holiday season.

Haul out the holly, Netflix’s entire 2024 Christmas slate is here, and we watched every one of them. So, if you’re wondering which ones to prioritize, or maybe which order to watch them in, we’re happy to guide you.

The streamer began their rollout at the beginning of November, releasing one new movie every Wednesday, culminating on Dec. 4. There are five in total, ranging pretty widely in concepts. Every November and December sees the streamer provide audiences with plenty of Yuletide seasonal movies, often resembling the type of corny, predictable, low-budget yet undeniably soothing made-for-tv works that Hallmark and other cable TV competitors push out during the tail end of the year. There’s plenty of that this year, most notably Lindsay Lohan’s “Our Little Secret,” about a couple who break up only to reunite during a Christmas holiday when they discover their new partners are siblings.

But this year, the company has put a bit of spice in the egg nog, so to speak, with “Hot Frosty” and “The Merry Gentlemen” two movies that…also pretty neatly fit into the Hallmark and Lifetime Christmas movie formula, down to featuring the type of early 2000s teen film star that often headline this genre.

The actor opened up to People magazine on what it’s like to release The Merry Gentlemen on Netflix around the same time Lindsay Lohan-starring Our Little Secret is hitting the streamer.

While Murray and Lohan reunited to film Freakier Friday earlier this year, the One Tree Hill star would love to continue working with the actress.

Netflix continues to roll out new holiday content, and audiences are rejoicing. The latest, Our Little Secret, jingled all the way to 32.4M views in its debut weekend, making it not only No. 1 in film but the most-watched title from November 23 to 29.

The previous week’s release, The Merry Gentlemen, held onto No. 3 with 9.8M views. In fact, the English films list was full of holiday cheer, as Netflix’s other recent film Hot Frosty also claimed a spot at No. 7 with 5M views.

Second place went to the animated film Spellbound, which attracted 15.3M views over the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday and reached the Top 10 in 92 countries.

As for TV, Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey took another look at the famous true crime case, enthralling audiences nearly three decades later with 13.4M views, good enough for first place.

The series hit Netflix one month before the 28th anniversary of Ramsey’s murder in 1996. The case has long been a pop culture obsession, as documented in the 2017 film “Casting JonBenét,” which also streams on Netflix.

The No. 2 TV title of the week was the Colman Domingo-led thriller “The Madness,” hitting 9.3 million views in its first four days on Netflix. It was followed by “A Man on the Inside,” a comedy from Mike Schur starring Ted Danson, which achieved 7 million views in its first full week of streaming after debuting at No. 1 the week before.

“A Man on the Inside,” a Netflix comedy from Mike Schur starring Ted Danson, was the No. 1 title on Luminate’s weekly ranking of streaming originals for Nov. 22-28. The series hit 1.3 billion minutes watched during its first full week of availability after its Nov. 21 premiere.

Next in line was the newest Taylor Sheridan series, “Landman,” which hit 984.3 million minutes watched in its first full week on Paramount+ — up from its No. 7 debut with 470.4 million minutes watched in five days the previous week. Last week’s No. 1 title, “Cross,” took third place this week with 855.4 million minutes watched in its second full week of avavilability.

"Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey" debuted as the fourth-most-watched streaming original of the week with 771.7 million minutes watched, having only been available for the last four days of the window. Next was "Lioness" Season 2 with 559.4 million minutes watched, closely followed by "Tulsa King" Season 2 with 547.1 million minutes watched.

Lindsay Lohan has made a comeback in acting in recent years. She was originally known as a child actor, providing her talents to movies like The Parent Trap and Freaky Friday. In 2004, she made a splash in the teen comedy Mean Girls, wherein she played Cady Heron. Lohan's teenage years in acting were defined by films like these, which in turn became definitive works of family comedy. Mean Girls has a long legacy that has resulted in a Broadway musical and then a back-to-film adaptation of that musical, and Freaky Friday is also getting a new sequel.

After her active period in the early 2000s, however, Lohan's career slowed down significantly in the 2010s. For a while, her acting career only consisted of brief television appearances and short films. This changed in 2022, however, when Lohan signed a deal with Netflix that would allow her to star in a series of films.

Netflix’s slate will include many a festive film in December 2024 ahead of Christmas. Several already arrived on the streamer in November, including Meet Me Next Christmas, Hot Frosty, The Merry Gentlemen and Our Little Secret.

Angelina Jolie’s portrayal of Maria Callas will land this month as well. Carry-On, a thriller starring Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman set during Christmas at an airport, will put a twist on the Christmas classic. Lisa Kudrow, Ray Romano and more will also star in Liz Feldman’s next ensemble series, No Good Deed. Season 6 of Virgin River arrives ahead of Christmas as well.

For once, the top 10 movies on iTunes and Fandango aren’t close to a mirror image of each other. “Conclave” (Focus) and “Terrifier 3” (Cineverse), both successful October releases that exceeded theatrical expectations, were released on PVOD last week. They had the same availability yet vastly different results.

Edward Berger’s top award-contending “Conclave” took an immediate top spot at iTunes from its first day, yet is only #8 for the full-week in the Fandango top 10. Damien Leone’s “Terrifier 3” leads at Fandango, yet only briefly appeared during the week at iTunes (debuting at #3) before dropping off the list. It currently ranks #14.

The two charts can vary, but mainly in cases of different pricing. Fandango ranks by revenue accrued for a title, while iTunes goes by transactions. Across the second half of 2024, Max/HBO has dominated Samba TV’s Weekly Wrap Report streaming chart thanks to two massive hits, “House of the Dragon” and “The Penguin.” Both of those series topped the chart for the entirety of their eight episode seasons, and then some. Incredibly, both “Dragon” and “Penguin” were the most-watched streaming shows in the weeks after their finale, giving them each nine week runs.

All of this is to set up the fact that Max possibly has its third runaway hit of 2024 with “Dune: Prophecy.” The sci-fi series is a spinoff of the massively popular “Dune” films that ruled the box office over the past several years. That audience clearly carried over, helping lift the show’s first episode to the top of the streaming chart this week.

“Dune” has a ways to go to match the magic of Max’s other two big hits.

After it failed to garner any traction at the box office, a 2024 Blumhouse movie is finding renewed success on Netflix. The indie studio best known for their horror output has enjoyed something of a mixed bag in the past couple of years when it's come to both the critical and commercial reception to their movies. For every record-breaking M3GAN and Five Nights at Freddy's, there's also been a near-franchise-destroying The Exorcist: Believer and lackluster Halloween Ends.

2024, in particular, has been something of a rockier year for Blumhouse. Having hoped to recapture the January release success of M3GAN, the horror short adaptation of Night Swim proved to be a critical misfire, albeit a modest box office success. The studio followed it up with four other releases, including the similarly panned Imaginary and the James McAvoy-starring English-language remake of Speak No Evil, which was a critical and commercial hit. Blumhouse is one of the biggest names in horror, and one of their four-year-old movies has found new streaming success. The production company now regularly releases anywhere between four and 12 movies a year, partnering with distributors like Warner Bros., Universal, Lionsgate, and Paramount, as well as streamers like Netflix, Prime Video, and Peacock. Though the stories, casts, and overall quality for Blumhouse movies vary from title to title, the films are generally made for less than $20 million, and they're generally horror or horror-adjacent.

2020 was a complicated year for Hollywood with the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic causing global theatrical shutdowns, but several Blumhouse movies were still able to break through. The company's biggest success story of the year is, of course, Leigh Whannell's The Invisible Man, but Freaky and Fantasy Island were also hits. Other titles went straight to VOD, like You Should Have Left and The Craft: Legacy.

While Our Little Secret may paint a picture of the perfect holiday season, it has to dress up several real-world filming locations to get that festive cheer just right.

Netflix's The Merry Gentlemen and Mother of the Bride have three things in common they premiered in 2024, feature Chad Michael Murray, and weren't well received among critics and audiences alike. Beginning with the first week of November, the streamer has released one new original Christmas romantic comedy per week, beginning with Meet Me Next Christmas at the beginning of the month and concluding with Our Little Secret, which was released ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Each of the four movies boast big stars that we all know and love, including Christina Milian, Lacey Chabert, Chad Michael Murray, and Lindsay Lohan. Netflix's latest holiday offering, Our Little Secret, is something of a step back from the streamer's efforts to go slightly spicier with their rom-com content this season following the shirtless-man-forward releases Hot Frosty and The Merry Gentlemen. The new movie which follows exes Avery (Lindsay Lohan) and Logan (Ian Harding) as they pretend not to know each other over Christmas when they realize their respective partners are siblings is a profoundly middle-of-the-road family comedy, minimally edgier than the average Hallmark Christmas movie but without enough texture to rub anybody the wrong way.

Our Little Secret is a holiday drama in which two resentful exes find themselves spending Christmas together after discovering that their current partners are siblings. The film explores themes of reconciliation and the complexities of family dynamics during the festive season.

Netflix's new Christmas movie with a Magic Mike twist has become their No. 1 film just days after its release. Since 2017, the streaming service has been producing original Christmas movies, starting with A Christmas Prince. Over the years, the streaming platform has established itself as a top destination for holiday films, including The Princess Switch starring Vanessa Hudgens, and The Christmas Chronicles starring Kurt Russell, both in 2018. Last year, one of Netflix's most popular holiday movies was Best. Christmas. Ever!.

In 2024, several of Netflix's Christmas movies have already topped their Global Top 10 chart for the past three weeks. In the first full week of November, Meet Me Next Christmas ranked first on Netflix's Global Top 10 films with 18.1 million views, followed by Lacey Chabert's Hot Frosty the following week with 16 million views. Christmas movies on Netflix are already hot — not frosty.

The streamer’s latest Global Top 10 list included three Christmas movies: Chad Michael Murray and Britt Robertson film “The Merry Gentlemen” debuting at No. 1, “Hot Frosty” slipping to number 2, and “Meet Me Next Christmas” with Christina Millian charting seventh in its third week on the list.

Forget Christmas — it’s not even Thanksgiving.

“The Merry Gentlemen” had 14.7 million views in the week of November 18, according to Netflix, while “Hot Frosty” with Lacey Chabert and Dustin Milligan had 12.7 million (it had 16 million views in its debut). “Meet Me Next Christmas” had 5.9 million views last week.

Netflix debuted yet another holiday rom-com last week, which audiences quickly boosted to the top of the English films list.

The Merry Gentlemen, starring Chad Michael Murray and Britt Robertson, amassed 14.7M views from November 18 to 24, making it the most-watched title of the week.

In fact, the English films list was largely dominated by holiday movies, including two other recent Netflix originals, Hot Frosty and Meet Me Next Christmas, which came in at No. 2 with 12.7M views and No. 7 with 5.9M views, respectively.

Netflix’s animated original Spellbound also made its debut on November 22, soaring to third place with 8.5M views in its first few days on the streamer.

As for TV, Mike Schur took the top spot with his new comedy A Man on the Inside, which got 6.9M views.

Season 2 of Arcane remained solid this week as well with another 6.4M views, which was good enough for second place.

Now streaming, the film is kind of like a Christmassy “Magic Mike,” starring Chad Michael Murray. He plays a bar handyman named Luke who hates city girls, but begrudgingly agrees to dance in a male revue led by city girl Ashley (Britt Robertson), when she needs to save her parents’ bar (the one he works in). He quickly finds that dancing in the show opens him up in more ways that he expected, and the two fall in love.

Chad Michael Murray joins the various famous actors starring in Netflix's 2024 Christmas movies with The Merry Gentlemen, which is reminiscent of the actor's former TV show, Gilmore Girls. Murray starred as Tristan DuGray in The WB's successful comedy-drama series about the relationship between a single mother and her teenage daughter. Unfortunately, Murray only appeared in 11 episodes over the course of the first two seasons of Gilmore Girls before he exited the show.
