I had my first short documentary play at the 2024 CAFF and got to see this film in the line up...and still can't stop thinking about it. Carol's timing was incredible for the comedy aspect - truly the stand out for me. And I loved the editting. Im thinking particularly when Carols character is introduced, and I loved the match cuts with the centre framed binoculars shots. The cinematography was engaging but also inspiring for me personally...Being an Albertan, the nod to our local area was neat, but true to Canadian film making in that it wasn't overt so that it has a very wide appeal. As a new film maker I loved that the setting was very integral to the story, but it's so simple and accessible... Really proving that great story telling can happen in "our own backyard".
The story theme was an interesting way to explore the topic, but it was the witty banter that cinched it for me. Makes me think of a more relatable "Diablo Cody", quick and dry and entertaining.
My only disappointment was that none of the creators were in person at the festival to hear more about it. Genuinely my favorite film of the night.... so much so that I've gone looking for more here on IMDB about it the next morning. Congratulations to the team, and I'm eager to watch what comes next from this team.
