Throughout its brilliant nine-season run, "Seinfeld" brought a number of celebrities on to play amusing caricatures of themselves. Raquel Welch (star of "Scarsdale Surprise"), Marisa Tomei and "The Velvet Fog" Mel Tormé are just a few big names that got in on the fun, but it's arguable the most memorable drop-ins came from the world of sports. Given that Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David are both massive sports fans, this shouldn't be surprising, but it is interesting that both men managed to get players from their favorite, and very different, New York baseball teams to guest on the show.
David, a well-known Yankees fanatic, prevailed upon newly minted World Series champions Derek Jeter and Bernie Williams to appear on the Season 8 episode "The Abstinence" in 1996. Though not anywhere near a top-tier episode, Jeter and Williams were game and comfortable within the comedy genre – which is not always the case for...

The nominations have been revealed for the 2025 GLAAD Media Awards, and one critically acclaimed LGBTQ+ film is notably absent from the pack of nominees.
The annual awards ceremony will return for a 36th year in 2025. According to GLAAD, it’s goal is to “recognize and honor fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ community in an ever-expanding and media landscape.”
On Wednesday (January 22), the organization revealed the crop of nominees that would be honored at the ceremony. While projects such as Wicked and Queer were notably featured, Netflix’s Emilia Perez was left off the list.
The snub comes after GLAAD declared that the movie, which stars Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez and trans actress Karla Sofia Gascon, was “not good trans representation” in a November 2024 essay. The story included reviews from transgender film critics and noted that “inauthentic portrayals of trans people are offensive and even dangerous.”

Netflix is set to premiere a groundbreaking reality series that challenges modern dating norms by removing digital technology from the romantic equation. “Offline Love,” a 10-episode Japanese reality show, will debut globally on February 18, following ten singles as they seek love in Nice, France—without the use of smartphones or digital communication.
The innovative series breaks from traditional dating show formats by forcing participants to connect using only pre-digital communication methods. Veteran entertainment personality Kyoko Koizumi will host the show alongside comedy duo Reiwa Roman, bringing a unique perspective to the concept.
“In a foreign country and without digital devices, participants will rely on letters, promises, and chance encounters to find love,” Koizumi explained. This approach highlights the stark contrast between contemporary digital dating and traditional romantic interactions.

Netflix is expanding its unscripted slate with “Offline Love,” a unique Japanese dating series that challenges modern romance by stripping away digital devices.
Set to premiere globally on Feb. 18, the 10-episode series follows 10 singles searching for connection in Nice, France, with just 10 days to find love through serendipitous encounters.
The show marks the reality hosting debut of Japanese entertainment veteran Kyoko Koizumi alongside comedy duo Reiwa Roman, who provide studio commentary throughout the series.
“I never really connected with romance reality shows, but this concept is fascinating: in a foreign country and without digital devices, participants rely on letters, promises, and coincidences to find love,” says Koizumi, who brings perspective from the pre-smartphone era. “I grew up without a smartphone, and every moment felt precious.”

Japanese reality dating show The Boyfriend is coming back.
The groundbreaking gay dating show’s first season broke out in Japan after launching on July 9, spending six weeks in Netflix’s local series charts, and made international stars of several characters.
The renewal comes as a Japanese high court ruled the country’s ban on same sex marriage unconstitutional, as support for legalization grows stronger.
The new season will introduce a new group of young men, who share their stories of sexuality with each other while living in a house called ‘The Green Room.’ In each episode, one man is selected to run a food truck. He selects another to join him and they spend the day learning about each other.
Hosts Megumi, Chiaki Horan, Thelma Aoyama, Durian Lollobrigida and Yoshimi Tokui will return to guide viewers through the experiences of the men during their time together.

Netflix has greenlit a second season of its groundbreaking Japanese same-sex dating reality series “The Boyfriend,” following the show’s impressive performance both domestically and internationally.
The timing of Netflix’s renewal announcement couldn’t have been more appropriate. The Associated Press reported on Friday that a high court in Fukuoka, Japan ruled the country’s ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional, marking the eighth such ruling out of nine cases since 2019. The decision, which found that the ban violates citizens’ constitutional right to pursue happiness, adds pressure on Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s minority government to act on marriage equality. Japan currently stands as the only G7 nation that doesn’t legally recognize same-sex marriages or provide legally binding protections for LGBTQ+ couples.
The first season of “The Boyfriend,” which debuted July 9, maintained a strong presence in Netflix’s Weekly Top 10 Series chart in Japan, holding its position for six consecutive weeks.

More is in store for fans of Japan’s hit gay dating show The Boyfriend. On Monday morning in Tokyo, Netflix revealed that it has ordered a second season of the title, which is famously Japan’s very first same-sex reality show.
The first season, which premiered July 9, won over viewers both globally and at home in Japan, landing on Netflix’s weekly top-10 list of most-watched series for six consecutive weeks. The Boyfriend was also a favorite among international critics thanks to its refreshingly naturalistic, non-exploitative approach to the dating show genre.
The Boyfriend‘s format features a cast of nine Japanese and East Asian men who identify as gay or bisexual living together for a month in a luxury house known as the “Green Room.” Unlike most dating shows, there are no eliminations, alliances or machinations. Netflix's latest dating show, The Later Daters, followed the lives of six participants who showed how incredible golden romance can be, and season 2 seems like a pretty viable idea. Unlike other dating shows such as Perfect Match or Love Is Blind, The Later Daters focused more on the cast finding an excellent soul connection than drama. Produced by Michelle Obama, The Later Daters featured men and women in their 50s, 60s, and 70s as they searched for their life partners. Season 1 was full of heartwarming conversations and showed awkward, funny, and relatable moments encapsulating modern-day dating.
The show was unique due to its lack of scripted drama, similar to the Japanese same-sex dating show The Boyfriend, thus giving an authentic representation of how difficult dating life can be. Socially-conservative Japan seems to be in no rush to follow its neighbors in East Asia and roll out the pink carpet to the LGBTQ community or recognize same-sex marriages. But where the Japanese entertainment industry is slowly heading, courts and municipal authorities are following.
The untroubled July arrival of the country’s first same-sex dating reality show “The Boyfriend,” on streamer Netflix, may be another sign that normalization of queerness in Japan is on the way.
The show takes nine men to a beach house in order to find love — or at least friendship. For a month, they live together and take turns working shifts at a coffee truck, forging relations with other housemates and learning about themselves along the way.

Netflix is no stranger to intense reality TV competition shows that wind up pitting contestants against one another. Another major genre for the streaming giant seems to be content that hails from Korea, such as romantic K-dramas, or its most watched series of all time, Squid Game. But what happens when you combine these two show types together?
The result is the documentary series Pop Star Academy: Katseye, which follows the formation of a pop star girl group as scouted by the same Korean executives known for creating the boy band BTS, which has been called the biggest pop group in the world. The episodes track the intense training the young women endure all in hopes of getting their shot at stardom - and it's far from an easy ride.

Summer comes and goes, but the connections made in a Japanese seaside city on The Boyfriend, the country’s first same-sex reality romance series, could last a lifetime.
Launching in July, the reality series follows nine young men in search of love and friendship as they spend a summer living together. Each participant arrives at their new home — a beachside abode called the “Green Room” — with their own unique story to share. But the group has one thing in common: They are all attracted to men.
Over 10 episodes, they’ll experience the highs and lows of first love and heartbreak, all while working together at a coffee truck. As their time together grows, so do the connections they forge, as the men express themselves and their feelings for each other in bold and brave new ways.
“We started out wanting to highlight the young men’s friendships and personalities,” says...

“The Boyfriend” concluded its internet-beloved 10-episode run on Netflix this morning, giving audiences a refreshing summer romance with the nine queer men living together in The Green Room and running a coffee truck named Brewtiful.
A dating reality show in name only, the resulting series was both tender and moving, allowing nine strangers to connect with one another (some romantically) but also push themselves out of their comfort zones and come to big, life-altering realizations. None more so than perhaps Taeheon, who ended his time in The Green Room by deciding that he would come out to his parents. Guiding viewers (and often voicing what we were exclaiming alone on our couches) was a panel of celebrities — Megumi, Chiaki Horan, Thelma Aoyama, Durian Lollobrigida, and Yoshimi Tokui — watching the action unfolding along with us.

“Thank God we can’t tell the future. We’d never get out of bed,” is one of the most memorable lines in “August: Osage County.” That line played on a loop in my head while I watched Netflix’s “The Boyfriend,” the Japanese reality series about queer men looking for love and friendship that prioritizes tender drama over boozy machinations.
Interspersed throughout the series are quick-cut flash-forwards to what will happen to the men we’re meeting. There are swoon-worthy moments, heartbroken moments, and everything in between. “The Boyfriend” is hardly the first series, reality or scripted, to shuffle the past, present, and future to underscore a point or to keep the audience watching. (“The Bachelor” just did it to great effect in the Season 28 premiere.) But there’s something deeply moving in how “The Boyfriend” handles it.
Much of the charm and power of “The Boyfriend” lies in how ordinary the proceedings are.

One of the most memorable episodes from Seinfeld’s early years found Jerry befriending his idol, New York Mets star Keith Hernandez, who Jerry clearly adores, but not enough to go all the way — i.e., help him move.
In order to beef up “The Boyfriend” into a two-part episode that could help boost ratings during sweeps week, the writers also wove in a storyline in which Hernandez dates Elaine and, most notably, they concocted an elaborate parody of Oliver Stone’s JFK.
As documented in a mock Zapruder film, Kramer and Newman accuse the first baseman of spitting on them following a 1987 loss to the Phillies.
