With every October comes the new installment in the Call of Duty franchise. This all-but-dead franchise limps forward with microtransactions, battle passes, Snoop Dogg, and Nicki Minaj operators running around matches played by 12-year-olds who are all hopped up on steroids or Adderall.
Long gone are the cinematic campaign moments that would make filmmakers like Michael Bay blush. Long gone are the interesting engaging characters. Long gone are memorable betrayals that could make a grown man cry.
In its place, we get recycled multiplayer elements that have no business being in a single-player campaign mode. If I wanted to play zombies I'd play zombies. If I wanted to play Warzone, I'd play Warzone. Unfortunately for the minority of us who want the engaging story, Activision doesn't care. Because, well, let's be honest, the real work is being put towards Warzone, multiplayer, and maybe zombies.
With that being said, I can't completely condemn this year's Call of Duty, as there are perhaps three redeeming factors that don't completely ruin this game.
One, the new movement system (omni movement), I must admit, is well made and properly implemented. It adds a level of fluidity that Call of Duty has never had. So love it or hate it, it's probably here to stay.
Two, the return of three lane map design. I have been dying for this map design to return to the franchise for years. Because of that, this game's maps are surprisingly good. They almost all feel good and are fun to play. Some modes are better for certain maps, but that's not too much of a problem.
Three, classic rank prestige. Reach level 55 and trade it all in for a bit of prestige. It's back, and it feels good.
Overall, while I appreciate these returns that make me reminisce of past better CoDs, it still doesn't stop this overall game from feeling average to above average. Sure, it's made more fun with friends, but if you're someone like me who is dying to see this old franchise return to its roots, then this is not it.
Maybe next year. I continue to say optimistically or in complete delusion.
