The Shopping Centre that was visited by Martian and his daughter was built on top of the Battersea Power Station. It was decommissioned in stages in 1975 as a result of rising operating costs declining energy production and aging infrastructure, but was given a reprieve from the wrecking ball due to its landmark designation. In 2012, a consortium of Malaysian investors agreed to develop the site, and it was opened to the public in 2022. Moreover, it is a stone's throw from the grounds of the New American Embassy in Nine Elms.
