Michael Fassbender's best performances are often overlooked in lesser-known projects like A24's 2016 film. Trespass Against Us showcases Fassbender's emotional range through personal themes like morality and family. Despite Fassbender's involvement, Trespass Against Us received little attention due to its limited release.
Michael Fassbender has starred in an A24 film that more people should recognize. While Fassbender has achieved great through franchises like X-Men and Alien, he has also starred in many other movies that may not have been as popular. However, as Michael Fassbender's new 97% Rotten Tomatoes hit indicates, some of the actor's best performances can be found in his lesser-known projects, like his A24 film from 2016.
Born in Germany before breaking into the American film industry, Michael Fassbender soared to commercial success in the fantasy action movie 300. The role has since given him access to even greater opportunities, including Magneto in the X-Men franchise. With an...

Michael Fassbender has faced a series of failures in recent years, but his upcoming film "The Killer" could be the turnaround he needs. "The Killer" is directed by acclaimed filmmaker David Fincher, and early footage suggests it has the potential to be one of the best films of 2023. Fassbender's comeback doesn't stop with "The Killer" – he also has two other movies set to release in late 2023, showing his full force in reclaiming success.
Michael Fassbender is undoubtedly an accomplished actor with plenty of critically acclaimed and successful films under his belt, but he has been struggling to land a good project in recent years, and thankfully, The Killer can change that. Fassbender first rose to fame when he starred as Stelios in 300 in 2006, and he continued his string of success with movies like Hunger, Inglourious Basterds, Jane Eyre, A Dangerous Method, Prometheus, and 12 Years a Slave. The jokes will extend well past April 1st on HBO and HBO Max.

“A Black Lady Sketch Show” will also bring plenty of laughs when it returns for its fourth season. The sketch comedy series premieres April 14.
On the drama side, the limited series “Love and Death” premieres on April 27. It’s based on the true story of Candy (Elizabeth Olsen) and Pat Montgomery (Patrick Fugit) and Betty (Lily Rabe) and Allan Gore (Jesse Plemons) – two churchgoing couples enjoying their small-town Texas life… until an extramarital affair leads somebody to pick up an axe.

With its list of new releases for April 2023, HBO Max is premiering the final episodes of two major shows.
First up is the continuation of Titans season 4 on April 13. Returning after a four month hiatus, these next six episodes will be the last go around for HBO Max’s gritty live-action DC series. Arriving three days later on HBO proper is the fourth and final season of Barry. Bill Hader and the rest of the Barry team wrote themselves into a fascinating corner with the conclusion of season 3. And judging by the first teasers for season 4, this final batch of episodes will indeed catch up with our favorite actor/hitman in prison.
Other TV shows of note this month include the Pete Davidson-starring animated series Fired on Mars on April 20 (light ’em up) the the Elizabeth Olsen-starring true crime story Love & Death on April 27.

In the final season of HBO Max’s “Barry,” premiering on April 16, Barry’s arrest for the murder of Cousineau’s girlfriend leads to a shocking conclusion. Barry (Bill Hader), a hitman who stumbles into acting, explores the dark, often comedic underbelly of both LA gangsters and Hollywood. Henry Winkler stars as Cousineau, Barry’s acting teacher and the man forced to confront the reality of his former student.

Another crime story will come to HBO Max in April, although this one is based on a true story. “Love & Death” revolves around the murder of Betty Gore (played by Lily Rabe) in a small Texas town in 1980. Her husband Alan (Jesse Plemons) has an affair with Candy (Elizabeth Olsen), who attends their church. Suddenly, the thrills turn deadly. There’s nothing quite like when HBO is airing one of its trademark watercooler-worthy dramas weekly. Thankfully, we’ll get to it experience exactly that and more on HBO Max in March 2023.
The big ticket item on HBO Max this March is undoubtedly Succession Season 4 on March 26. Part prestige drama and part screwball comedy, Succession is about as fun a watch as they come. Season 4 of the series about egregious wealth will find the Roy siblings reeling after trying and failing to take down their father, Logan (Brian Cox).
HBO Max’s other major TV option this month is another weekly release from HBO. Matthew Rhys returns as the titular lawyer in Perry Mason Season 2 on March 6. Season 1 of this period piece reboot flexed the classic TV character’s detective skills. From the look of the trailer, it seems as though this is the year Perry makes his name in the court room.

February may be the shortest month, but that doesn’t mean streaming services can ignore their duty to entertain us at all times. In that mission, Netflix is making a decent effort in February 2021. This isn’t the most jam-packed month the major streamer has trotted out just yet but there are plenty of new originals to get the job done.
Netflix has a few original series of note this month. The party begins with Kid Cosmic on Feb. 2. This animated series is a comic-tinged adventure from Craig McCracken, creator of the Powerpuff Girls. That’s followed by the Sarah Chalke and Katherine Heigl-starring Firefly Lane on Feb. 3 and Behind Her Eyes on Feb. 17. Perhaps the biggest sleeper this month, however, is Tribes of Europa. This post-apocalyptic adventure series premieres on Feb. 19.

Barry Keoghan will most likely always be associated with his breakthrough performance as a young sociopath in Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” but his career is set to have a major boost later this year when he joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe in “The Eternals.” Keoghan stars opposite Richard Madden, Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Brian Tyree Henry, and Kumail Nanjiani in the Marvel epic, which also finds indie favorite Chloé Zhao making the jump to the McU behind the camera. Grime, the British-originated urban music genre, is coming to the big screen with “Wiley,” a biopic of the musical pioneer from Pulse Films and BMG. Wiley is one of the most influential musicians of his generation and is known as the “Godfather of Grime.” He has also had several crossover hits, including “Wearing My Rolex.”
Adam Smith (“Trespass Against Us”) will helm the picture, which will tell the tumultuous life story of Wiley, whose real name is Richard Kylea Cowie. It will cover his early days as a struggling producer and performer on pirate radio in London up to when he began making a worldwide name for himself. The film will also trace the growth of grime from its underground U.K. roots to a genre that has resonated around the world.
“This is my life, my highs and lows, but it’s not really all about me,” Wiley said.

Welcome to Career Watch, a vocational checkup of top actors and directors and those who hope to get there. In this edition, we take on Michael Fassbender.
Bottom Line: Fassbender is an asset in any ensemble, from the “X-Men” franchise to “Inglourious Basterds.” Those franchises inflate his bankability in foreign territories, and he’s had two Oscar nominations, but he lacks marquee value. He was the biggest star in well-reviewed $97-million sequel “Alien: Covenant” (Metacritic: 65), which scored just $240 million worldwide, down dramatically from the $430 million earned by its predecessor, “Prometheus.” Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin didn’t even know who Fassbender was when his name came up to play the lead in hot project “Steve Jobs” (Metacritic: 82); and sure enough, even with a full-tilt Oscar push that brought him his first Best Actor nomination, the $30-million movie tanked with just $34 million worldwide. Fassbender tends to be cast as troubled antiheroes (Magneto, Macbeth,...

Michael Fassbender has been going through a bit of a rough, cinematic patch since “Steve Jobs.” The blockbuster “X-Men: Apocalypse” wasn’t what fans were looking for, Disney pretty much gave up on the (underrated) “The Light Between Oceans,” the indie “Trespass Against Us” didn’t connect, Terrence Malick fatigue hit (the also underrated) “Song To Song,” while “Alien: Covenant” underwhelmed.

“Dunkirk” is finally upon us after months of anticipation, and it’s clear the long wait has been worth it. IndieWire has named the WWII epic the best movie Christopher Nolan has ever made and a certain Oscar contender in the months ahead. As audiences nationwide get to discover why the film is such a monumental war epic, questions as to who exactly is in the cast are bound to come up.

Unlike Nolan’s recent star-driven efforts like “Inception” and “Interstellar,” “Dunkirk” features an eclectic mix of relative newcomers, Oscar winners and the director’s reliable collaborators. Getting a blend of known and unknown talent was crucial for Nolan, as including too many stars would’ve distracted from the urgent nature of the story. In following mostly fresh faces, Nolan is...

A24 cemented its perception as the new-model indie distributor when Barry Jenkins’ “Moonlight” won three Oscars, including that dramatic best-picture win. So what does the upstart indie, hailed for holding the skeleton key that unlocks the precious millennial demo, do for an encore?
The Tribeca Film Festival showcased two upcoming A24 releases, both of which seem oddly retro: World War II costume drama “The Exception,” starring Oscar-winner Christopher Plummer as Kaiser Wilhelm II, and “The Lovers,” starring Debra Winger and Tracy Letts as an unhappy older married couple. They also dropped the trailer for Yiddish-language Hasidic family drama “Menashe” and suddenly, the new boss looks a lot like the old one.
What gives? This older-demo arthouse trio could easily carry the signature blue-and-white logo of venerable specialty distributor Sony Pictures Classics. But don’t be deceived by appearances. A24 is a far cry from older-generation studio indies like Spc and Fox Searchlight,...

45 Years (Andrew Haigh)
Andrew Haigh’s third feature as a director, 45 Years, is an excellent companion piece to its 2011 predecessor, Weekend. The latter examined the inception of a potential relationship between two men over the course of a weekend, whereas its successor considers the opposite extreme. Again sticking to a tight timeframe, the film chronicles the six days leading up to a couple’s 45th wedding anniversary. Brendan Gleeson and Michael Fassbender forge a convincing family dynamic in this otherwise inconsistent British drama set among the Traveller community
This British debut (the director previously worked in TV) has something of the oppressive threat of the similarly themed Australian drama Animal Kingdom. Both stories are set against the unpredictable outlaw backdrop of a crime dynasty; both explore the near impossibility of escaping from an environment that both supports and suffocates. But what sets Trespass Against Us apart is the fact that its milieu, the Traveller community, is one rarely seen outside Gypsy wedding-style TV series.
There are tonal inconsistencies – the ending in particular seems inappropriately wacky and absurd. But the tricky bond between Brendan Gleeson’s looming patriarch Colby Cutler, a personality so strong that he can – and does – convince his family that the world is flat, and his son Chad (Michael Fassbender) is nicely handled. Chad would...

Ending with a ludicrous freeze-frame straight from an eighties-tastic Us sitcom, this debut feature from director Adam Smith is all over the shop. With little rhyme or reason it veers uncomfortably between gritty family drama, whimsical comedy and full-blown heist thriller. Smith – a frequent collaborator with the Chemical Brothers – never seems to get a complete handle on what he wants the film to be. It’s a shame, as this lack of a clear, concrete vision means powerful moments and committed performances from a cast that includes Michael Fassbender and Brendan Gleeson largely go to waste.
Fassbender is Chad Cutler, a prominent member of a close-knit travelling community currently camped somewhere in the West Country. Their accents are thick as molasses, they call everybody “mush” and afternoons are wiled away by piling into a beat-up station wagon and chasing rabbits through open fields. It’s not all fun and games,...

See related Trespass Against Us trailer, with Michael Fassbender Justin Kurzel interview: Macbeth, Breaking Bad, Snowtown
When Fortitude arrived on our screens in 2015, it did so floating on a sea of publicity. Millions were spent announcing the arrival of Sky’s newest pitch at offering original drama to sit alongside its impressive roster of Us imports. Polar bears appeared at tube stations and posters of its snowbound stars, among them such luminaries as Michael Gambon, Sofie Gråbøl, Christopher Ecclestone and Stanley Tucci, appeared in hoardings both online and in the real world. The campaign caught attention but remained abstract, leaving little clue as to what the show was actually about.
The marketers can be forgiven for this approach, as the show itself seemed uncertain.

Taboo’s latest episode finds James Delaney at his lowest ebb…
This review contains spoilers.
See related Trespass Against Us trailer, with Michael Fassbender Justin Kurzel interview: Macbeth, Breaking Bad, Snowtown
Making enemies of the most powerful bastards in the land is finally taking its on the devil James Delaney. Episode six left our anti-hero at his lowest ebb. He’s lost his ship, been betrayed, was almost drowned by the ghost of his mother and now looks to have been framed for murder.
I say framed because if Delaney really did kill Winter—the little mudlark whose death warrant was signed the moment she started talking starry-eyed of her dream of escaping to America—he’d have to resign as this show’s lead. We’re on board with the sister-shagging and villain-disembowelling, but drunkenly murdering a poor kid? They’d have to change the name from Taboo to Pure Evil.

Family bonds can be hard to break.
At least, this is the dilemma faced by Chad Cutler (Michael Fassbender) in this weekend's new film Trespass Against Us. Chad is trying to juggle his relationship with his corrupt father with being a good father and husband to his wife Kelly (Lyndsey Marshal).
It's nearly impossible to do both as Chad keeps getting pulled into the criminal activity of his larger extended family while still trying to be a good man and set an example for his young children. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival back in September, and opens in a limited release today in select Cineplex theatres.

As indie buyers determine the fate of this year’s Sundance entries, the specialty market continues to swing dramatically between awards players and soft newbies. New limited releases remain flat.
Showing particular strength is Sundance attendee Harvey Weinstein’s designated Oscar contender “Lion,” which saw a tiny drop as it slowly heads toward wider release. It could get a sizable Oscar boost over the next few weeks. Next week after nominations expect wider breaks for some pictures that have played in theaters for while.
Opening
The Red Turtle (Sony Pictures Classics) – Metacritic: 89; Festivals include: Cannes, Toronto 2016
$21,811 in 3 theaters; PTA (per theater average): $7,270; Cumulative: $39,435
This Belgian animated Cannes breakout (a rare European production from Japan’s Studio Ghibli) opened with high-end reviews in its official initial release in New York and Los Angeles (after an earlier Oscar-qualifying one-week run). The grosses didn’t rise to the level its earlier acclaim promised.

In the centerpiece scene of the eccentric UK crime dramedy “Trespass Against Us,” the cocky son of an unlikely mastermind leads his gang on their biggest smash-and-grab yet: driving through the ceiling-to-floor-length front windows of a country estate, and then driving off again with millions of dollars worth of art and antiques. Michael Fassbender plays the heist’s point-man, Chad Cutler, who reluctantly takes the assignment from his dad and boss, Colby (Brendan Gleeson), yet comes to life when he’s behind the wheel of the getaway car, leading the cops on a chase through narrow streets and bumpy fields.

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
Closet Monster (Stephen Dunn)
Writer/director Stephen Dunn’s feature debut Closet Monster cares little about convention to tell the story of Oscar Madly (Connor Jessup) growing up with a psychological revulsion to his sexual urges, all thanks to an extremely disturbing event witnessed as a child. This prologue glimpse at his youth (played by Jack Fulton) is a mash-up of tough coming-of-age-dramatics and a dark-edged imaginative whimsy that intrigues to draw you closer.

While last weekend's new releases failed to energize the box office, two of this week's new titles will top the weekend chart. M. Night Shyamalan's latest thriller, Split, and the return of Vin Diesel in the title role of xXx: Return of Xander Cage are both looking to score $20+ million openings while Hidden Figures and La La Land look to continue to capture audience attention amid their already-strong domestic runs. Additionally, this weekend features the release of The Founder into just over one thousand theaters and High Top releasing brings The Resurrection of Gavin Stone into 887 theaters as it hopes to attract the attention of the faith-based audience. At the top of the weekend box office expect to find M. Night Shyamalan's Split. Trespass Against Us director Adam Smith has praised stars Michael Fassbender and Brendan Gleeson over their work on the film — describing the pair as “brilliant”. The first-time feature film director said they were so good that once he had cast them there was little else for him to do to mould them into the characters he wanted. Trespass Against Us is set in Britain and stars Fassbender as traveller Chad Cutler, who is torn between loyalty to his father Colby (Gleeson) and creating the opportunity of a crime-free life for his children. Maybe it’s just a side effect of first appearing on screen as a glistening mountain of Spartan beefcake, but arrogance is probably the trustiest tool in Michael Fassbender’s arsenal. As an actor, he’s often most enthralling when portraying characters—a tech guru, a master of magnetism, a haughty android—with serious superiority complexes. Finishing in second for the three-day is Lionsgate's La La Land, delivering an impressive $14.5 million for the three-day (+43.1%) from 1,848 theaters (+333), including 148 IMAX theaters,...
