In the past few years, there have been multiple documentaries and docuseries revisiting high-profile cases long after the fact: Lorena Bobbitt (“Lorena”), the Menendez Brothers (“Menendez & Menudo: Boys Betrayed”), JonBenét Ramsey (“JonBenét Ramsey: What Really Happened?”), Casey Anthony (“Casey Anthony: Where the Truth Lies”), Jared Vogel (“Jared from Subway: Catching a Monster”), boy band creator Lou Perlman (“Dirty Pop”), Brian Peck (“Quiet on the Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV”), Sherri Papini (“The Perfect Wife”), and Gypsy Rose Blanchard (“The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard”), just to name a few. And the trend isn’t limited to docs — Todd Haynes’s 2023 feature film “May December” offered a fascinating fictional version of the Mary Kay Letourneau story after 20-plus years.

“American Murder: Laci Peterson” was the most-watched streaming original series in the U.S. Aug. 16-22, which marked its first full week of availability, per Luminate. That’s up from fifth place with 255.3 million minutes watched the week before, though the docuseries was only available for two days during that window.
Interestingly, the title at the bottom of the TV chart covered the same subject. Peacock’s “Face to Face With Scott Peterson” debuted in 10th place with 147.5 million minutes watched in its first three days of streaming.
"Emily in Paris" returned to Netflix for its fourth season, which landed it a second place debut with 843.6 million minutes watched in its first full week of availability. The dramedy is a consistent performer for Netflix that can be expected to linger on viewership charts even longer this season, as only five episodes were made available with the initial drop. Earlier this month, Netflix released American Murder: Laci Peterson. And this week, on Tuesday, Aug. 20, Peacock dropped the three-episode docuseries Face to Face with Scott Peterson. The new doc recounts the murder of Laci Peterson and her unborn son, but from the Pov of the killer, her husband Scott Peterson. Needless to say, it’s the documentary no one asked for. And it is wildly unnecessary.
About 20 years ago, Scott Peterson was convicted of murdering his wife, Laci Peterson, who was pregnant with their unborn son. After finding mountains of evidence against Scott, he was sentenced to death in 2004. The California Supreme Court overturned this sentence in 2020. Scott is now serving life in prison without the possibility of parole. However, Scott claims innocence even today, and continues fighting for hearings, retesting findings, and presenting new theories.
Face to Face with Scott Peterson features the first interview in decades from Scott.

In 2004, 12 jurors — backed by a horde of blood-thirsty Americans, who had followed the case on television day and night — found Scott Peterson guilty of the murders of his wife, Laci, and their unborn son, Conner. Twenty years later, the convicted murderer is back before the court of public opinion with two new docuseries, with starkly opposing points of view, aimed at relitigating the case and swaying streaming audiences. But the projects have also arrived as new efforts are being made to overturn one of the most scrutinized convictions of the century.

Over the next five months, Americans debated whether her husband, Scott, had anything to do with her disappearance, until the bodies of Laci and her baby (who had been...

Face To Face With Scott Peterson offers a look at the other side of the Laci Peterson murder case. For the first time in 20 years, Scott is giving his thoughts on the case, and he has his theory of who killed his wife, as he still proclaims his innocence. However, Scott is almost unrecognizable in the interview, as he is gaunt and has lost weight over the years.

Peacock’s true-crime docuseries Face to Face With Scott Peterson has premiered with a focus on alternate theories around who and what could have caused the shocking 2002 murder of Laci Peterson.
The three-parter directed by Shareen Anderson sees Scott Peterson deniying killing his pregnant wife and their unborn child, aiming to undercut the initial Modesto police investigation and the prosecution’s case during his original 2003 trial. In 2004, Scott was convicted of the murders of Laci, who was eight months pregnant, and their unborn child, Conner. His death sentence was overturned in 2020 and reduced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. In 2024, the Los Angeles Innocence Project took over Scott’s case, and the nonprofit began investigating his case around the 20th anniversary of his conviction.

American Murder: Laci Peterson premiered on Netflix on Aug. 14 and remains atop the daily top 10 most popular shows on the streamer, even after the release of Emily in Paris season 4 part 1. The case continues to captivate the world over 20 years after it reached national headlines in 2002, so much so that another documentary series will release just one week later.
Whereas as Netflix's American Murder: Laci Peterson took a "very Laci forward" approach to telling her story, the latest docuseries tracking the case takes a completely different approach. Face to Face with Scott Peterson features the first interview with the convicted murderer in about 21 years. Likewise, the series will take a closer look at the case and consider new developments, particularly those that explore whether Scott could have been innocent.

On August 20th, Peacock will premiere a new three-part documentary series called “Face to Face with Scott Peterson.” The series allows Peterson, who has been in prison since 2004 for murdering his wife Laci and their unborn son, to publicly share his side of the story for the first time. Peterson claims he is innocent and was wrongly convicted.
Peterson, now 51, was found guilty in 2004 based on circumstantial evidence. He has remained behind bars at Mule Creek State Prison ever since. However, the Los Angeles Innocence Project took up his case earlier this year, arguing Peterson did not receive an adequate defense and reasonable doubts exist regarding his guilt.
In the documentary, Peterson hopes sharing his story will help alleviate some of the pain his family has endured over the two decades since Laci’s disappearance and death. He admits to having an affair but calls it a “casual sexual fling” due to loneliness,...

Peacock’s ‘Face to Face With Scott Peterson’ Trailer Presents New Theories on Laci Peterson’s Murder
Peacock’s first official trailer for true crime docuseries Face to Face With Scott Peterson shares alternate theories on what could have led to the murder of his wife, Laci Peterson.
“The Los Angeles Innocence Project has come on board to help find all the things that were ignored by the Modesto Police Department,” says Peterson’s sister-in-law, Janey. One new piece of information is that there was a burglary next door. “The burglars may have abducted and killed Laci,” notes Peterson’s former defense attorney Lara Yeretsian. Bryan Spitulski, a former fire investigator for the Modesto Pd, questions, “There’s blood on a mattress in a van. Why didn’t this get brought up?” Yeretsian believes this is “exonerating evidence” that should have required DNA testing.
Besides presenting the theories, the trailer also shows new footage from Peterson’s first on-camera interview since 2003. “Why should anyone want to hear your side of the story?...

Let me address the weird thing first. I don’t know if this is some sort of cosmic thing, but we are getting not one but two documentary series within the span of six days about the Laci Peterson murder. There’s American Murder: Laci Peterson, a three-part docuseries by Netflix, and then there’s Face to Face with Scott Peterson, also a three-part series coming from Peacock. Laci Peterson was an eight-month pregnant twenty-six-year-old American woman who was murdered by her husband Scott on December 24th, 2002, as per the official reports. Scott never confessed to the crime, but he was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison. We are, of course, going to talk about the Netflix documentary in this article, mainly about two things: whether or not Scott Peterson was guilty, and how the series fared as a documentary.
