James Purefoy (“King Randor”) and Charlotte Riley (“Queen Marlena”) have been cast in the upcoming live-action feature film “Masters of the Universe,” based on the iconic Mattel franchise, Amazon MGM and Mattel announced on Tuesday.

Both will star alongside the already announced Nicholas Galitzine (“He-Man”), Camila Mendes (“Teela”), Morena Baccarin (“The Sorceress”), Alison Brie (“Evil-Lyn”), Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson (“Malcolm/Fisto”), Jared Leto (“Skeletor”), Idris Elba (“Duncan/Man-at-Arms”), Sam C. Wilson (“Trap Jaw”), Hafthor Bjornsson (“Goat Man”) and Kojo Attah (“Tri-Klops”).

Travis Knight is directing the film from a screenplay by Chris Butler. Plot details are being kept under wraps for the film, which will be released exclusively in theaters worldwide on June 5, 2026. The movie will be produced by Escape Artists and Mattel Films.

We don't know about you, but there was just something about seeing Eddie Murphy back on laugh-out-loud funny form in last year's Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F that felt right. Sure, Murphy's put in solid work in the likes of You People and Candy Cane Lane in recent years, but his return to the role of Axel Foley was a glowing reminder that the legendary funnyman still has it in him to lead and carry a big comedy star vehicle. And Sony clearly got the memo, as Murphy has been tapped to lead Blue Falcon, an original comedy joint hailing from London Has Fallen writer Chad St. John.

Per Deadline's reporting, Murphy is poised to take on the role of a retired superspy in St. John's film, with the rub being that his character will come face to face with an old rival while trying to build bridges at his estranged son's destination wedding.

Exclusive: Sony Pictures has Eddie Murphy poised to star in Blue Falcon, a two-hander action comedy. Studio acquired a script by Chad St. John, the the London Has Fallen scribe who most recently scripted the just-wrapped Alan Ritchson-starrer Motor City.

2018’s Den of Thieves, starring Gerard Butler, O’Shea Jackson Jr. and Pablo Schreiber, took 15 years to reach the big screen, overcoming the bankruptcy of Relatively Media and various other obstacles along the way. The would-be franchise launcher, despite mixed reviews, then became a modest box office success, grossing over $80 million against a $30 million budget. However, the action-heist film surged in popularity by way of the home market and a particularly vocal social media fanbase. Gudegast is beyond grateful for that audience, but he insists that the sequel was already in motion before their added embrace.

Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu has crossed $100 million at the global box office, becoming the director’s highest-grossing film to date. Released by Focus Features, the reboot of F.W. Murnau's 1922 classic stars Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok, a terrifying vampire who becomes infatuated with a young woman named Ellen Hutter (Lily-Rose Depp) upon her visit to his castle. Since its debut on Christmas Day, the film has brought in $69.4 million domestically and $100 million internationally, with its second weekend contributing $13.2 million across 3,132 theaters.

According to Variety, Nosferatu is currently ranked third at the domestic box office, and continues to outperform expectations for an independent film. With its $100 million worldwide earnings against a $50 million budget, it skyrocketed past Eggers' previous films, including The Northman, which grossed $69 million globally against a budget of $90 million, and The Lighthouse, which earned $18 million worldwide against a budget of $11 million.

But enough about those filthy animals, the real story over the holiday are the classic labels, Focus Features and Searchlight which are both seeing record openings. Post Covid, Focus Features rose from the ashes this weekend to remind the town how hip they can make movies, the win here being Robert Eggers’ gothic vampire movie Nosferatu which is eyeing a $21.4M 3-day and $40.6M 5-day after $7.6M yesterday, the pic’s second day of release. At five days, that’s the biggest Focus Features opening ever, besting the Friday-Tuesday take of 2019’s Downton Abbey which did $38.4M.

In 2013, there were two high-profile Hollywood movies about terrorists invading the White House, and the brave Secret Service agents who stepped forward to protect a beleaguered President. On June 28, Roland Emmerich's excellent "White House Down" was released in theaters, and it starred Channing Tatum as the beleaguered agent, and Jamie Foxx as the president. The bad guy terrorist was played by Jason Clarke. "White House Down" also starred Maggie Gyllenhaal, Joey King, and Richard Jenkins. It was, for my money, one of the best films of 2013. 

A broader audience, however, better remembers Antoine Fuqua's "Olympus Has Fallen," which beat "White House Down" to theaters by about three months. Stephanie Collie, the costume designer behind film and television projects such as “Peaky Blinders,” died of cancer on Oct. 26 at St Christopher’s Hospice in London.

Over the course of her career, Collie worked with talent including Michael Caine, Henry Cavill, Jessica Chastain, Daniel Craig, Penélope Cruz, Morgan Freeman, Samuel L. Jackson, Cillian Murphy, Gary Oldman, Ryan Reynolds and Michelle Williams.

Collie began her career in the sewing room of the BBC alongside costume designer Susan Coates. Following an introduction from Coates to David Parfitt, she worked as a wardrobe assistant to Branagh on “Much Ado About Nothing.” From there, Collie worked as a costume designer on “Peter’s Friends,” which was directed by Branagh.

In 1988, Collie had her work featured onscreen in Guy Ritchie’s crime comedy film “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.”

Collie died Saturday at St. Christopher’s Hospice in South London following a terminal cancer diagnosis six months earlier, a publicist announced. Her husband, director of photography Hubert Taczanowski, died in June, also of cancer, at age 63.

Collie’s résumé also included Michael Winterbottom’s The Look of Love (2013), starring Steve Coogan, Anna Friel and Imogen Poots; London Has Fallen (2016), starring Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman, and its 2019 sequel, Angel Has Fallen; and Patrick Hughes’ The Hitman’s Bodyguard (2017), starring Samuel L. The series is produced by StudioCanal along with production companies Urban Myth Films, Millennium Media, G-Base, and Eclectic Pictures. It stars Tewfik Jallab as Vincent Taleb, a French protection officer tasked with guarding a government minister who becomes a terrorist target. Ritu Arya co-stars as Zara, a MI6 operative who helps Taleb investigate a conspiracy that may involve one of their own colleagues.

“Paris Has Fallen” launched earlier this year on Canal+, a French cable network. It has found success internationally as well, with Amazon Prime Video securing rights for viewers in the UK and Ireland. Australia’s Sbs will distribute the program, and German station Zdf, a co-producer of the series, will provide it domestically.

The first poster for the television spinoff of the popular Olympus Has Fallen franchise has been revealed. Titled Paris Has Fallen, the upcoming project will be a local language television series and the first of the franchise not to feature Gerard Butler's Mike Banning. The series was confirmed to be in the works in 2021, until it was formally announced in May 2023, with Butler executive producing through his company G-Base. The franchise itself began in 2013 with the first movie, Olympus Has Fallen, and has since released two sequels.
