The Korean writer and director team of Choi Suk-kwan and Lee Joon-ik had already established themselves as box office smashers with “Radio Days” and “The King and the Clown”, when they decided to shoot “The Happy Life”, and with actors like Kim Yoon-seok, Jung Ji-young and Kim Sang-ho the result was predefined as highly entertaining, a prediction it fulfilled utterly.
Gi-yeong is an unemployed slob that owes money due to a number of unsuccessful investments in the stock market, has utterly leaned upon his wife for financial support and has trouble with his adolescent daughter. However, when he is informed that Sang-woo, the leader of his college band has died, he attends a funeral where a drunken reunion among the former band members takes place, which gives him the idea to reinstate the band, Active Volcano. His former comrades though are not so eager, due to their business and financial engagements.

The industry is eagerly awaiting Bong Joon-Ho’s next directorial effort after the remarkable critical and box office success of Parasite. The first time that actress Yeri Han met with filmmaker Lee Isaac Chung to discuss the possibility of working together on Chung’s deeply personal fourth film “Minari,” the shy duo mostly avoided talking about it. Instead, Han recalled, they focused on their own families and coming-of-age experiences. While Chung’s own childhood inspired the period drama, Han quickly found her own connections to the story.
“I talked about my growing up and about my parents, my mother and father,” she said in a recent interview with IndieWire, speaking through a translator. “Later, on the set, I realized what an important conversation that was. I felt that I wasn’t very different from Isaac through that conversation, and that conversation was vital to understanding and portraying my character.”
In the ’80s-set “Minari,” Chung draws from his experiences to frame a quintessentially American story of family, ambition, and hope. The child of Korean immigrants,...

Bong Joon Ho, the Oscar-winning director of “Parasite,” has been named the international jury president for the 78th Annual Venice Film Festival.
The festival will run from September 1-11 later this year, and the jury he leads will decide the festival’s top prize, the Golden Lion, as well as the other top festival prizes. No other jury members have been named.
This is the first time a Korean filmmaker will lead the jury in the festival’s history, and while Bong’s films have been staples at Cannes, this is his first time attending the Venice Film Festival.
“The Venice International Film Festival carries with it a long and varied history, and I’m honored to be woven into its beautiful cinematic tradition. Holy sea monster! Deep Joy from Taiwan has debuted a new official trailer for a Chinese epic monster movie titled Abyssal Spider, which seems to be a 2020 update on the title. One of the posters (seen below) lists the title as Spiders (more than one?!) while the original Chinese title is Sea Fog (not to be confused with the Korean film also titled Sea Fog). This is another of these trendy don't-mess-with-nature or nature-will-get-angry eco monster movies, but this time the big bad creature is a Giant (massive!) underwater spider of some sorts. Obviously it comes from the deep abyss of the ocean, hence the title Abyssal Spider. This first trailer is focused entirely on the crew of a fishing boat caught in a bad storm, and there is no shot of the big spider. It's only seen on the two posters so far and it's frickin' huge and scary as hell.

Told with the rugged tenderness of a Flannery O’Connor novel but aptly named for a resilient Korean herb that can grow wherever it’s planted, Lee Isaac Chung’s semi-autobiographical ; it’s the story of a family assimilating into a country, but also the story of a man assimilating into his family.
Jacob Yi (Steven Yeun) and his wife Monica (“Sea Fog” star Yeri Han) emigrated from Korea together in the early ’70s, but — after nearly a decade of scraping by as chicken sexers in California — they arrive at the Arkansas trailer home he bought for their family in separate cars. Monica drives the kids: A stoic pre-teen girl named Anne (the natural and grounded Noel Cho), and a precocious seven-year-old boy named David. Jacob drives the truck, which is full of its own precious cargo.
As he pulls up to the five-acre plot of disheveled Ozark farmland, stridently unaware...

An awesome full international trailer has been released for the upcoming futuristic action crime thriller Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade. The Korean film comes from director Kim Jee-woon, who previously directed the films I Saw The Devil, The Good the Bad the Weird, and The Last Stand. Jee-woon has made some pretty hardcore and wild movies and this next film of his looks so good! The trailer is in Korean and I have no idea what anyone is saying but it still looks like it could be a badass film!
The film is a new adaptation of the popular Mamoru Oshii manga. The story is set in the near future, "the film takes place in a world where the governments of South and North Korea are on the cusp of reunification, following seven years of preparation. When demonstrations opposing the unification turn more violent, a special police force is formed to combat them.

After an all-too-brief tease last month, the full-length international trailer has arrived for Kim Jee-woon’s next feature, the futuristic crime thriller In-rang, a remake of Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade. An adaptation of the popular Mamoru Oshii manga, which had a few prior feature-length iterations, the director looks to be working on a large scale here after his more modestly-budgeted The Age of Shadows.
Taking place sometime in the future, In-rang follows the story of the special police unit that has been created to contain the tumultuous activity between North and South Korea, after the countries agree to create a joint government. Ten years after their first collaboration on The Good the Bad the Weird, Kim Jee-woon and Jung Woo-sung team back up for Jin-Roh. Alongside Woo-sung the film stars Han Hyo-Joo, Gang Dong-won, and Han Ye-ri.

I've got a cool little teaser trailer here worth checking out for an upcoming Korean futuristic action thriller Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade. The movie comes from director Kim Jee-woon, who previously directed I Saw The Devil, The Good the Bad the Weird, and The Last Stand. It's been a couple of years since he's made a movie and this one certainly looks interesting! I love this guy's movies so I'm definitely excited about watching this!
The film is an adaptation of the popular Mamoru Oshii manga. This isn't the first time it was adapted, though. In 1999 there was a feature-length anime film.

With the full trailer coming soon, we first get to indulge on the recently released teaser for the adaptation of the popular Mamoru Oshii manga, which had a few prior feature-length iterations.
Taking place sometime in the future, Jin-Roh – also known by its Korean title In-rang – follows the story of the special police unit that has been created to contain the tumultuous activity between North and South Korea, after the countries agree to create a joint government. The first teaser gives us a quick look at the gritty and violent underground activity as well as the seemingly advanced police suits.
Ten years after their first collaboration on The Good the Bad the Weird, Kim Jee-woon and Jung Woo-sung team back up for Jin-Roh.

The film is based on an actual incident, when 25 illegal Chinese immigrants died from asphyxiation in the ship’s hold, as it was transporting them to S. Korea, with the crew then throwing the bodies in the sea. The incident almost caused a diplomatic episode between S.Korea and China, with the former publicly apologizing for the incident. The circumstances surrounding the incident have shocked the South Korean public, and the government issued a statement expressing regret over what it called an inhumane and criminal act.
The story takes place in 1998, three years before the case, when captain Kang, hit by the financial crisis brought by the Imf, is forced to transport Chinese immigrants to S. Korea.

"Have you ever smuggled people before?" Film Movement has debuted a brand new official Us trailer for the dark Korean drama Sea Fog, originally known as Haemoo, directed by first-time filmmaker Shim Sung-bo. Some may remember that we originally posted a trailer for this two years ago, back in late 2014, as the film originally premiered and opened in Korea back then. It has been touring around the world playing at film festivals all over, and is finally getting released in the Us. It stars Kim Yun-seok, Park Yoo-chin, Ye-ri Han, and Kim Sang-ho. I had the chance to see this last year and it's very dark and very harrowing, as the film deals with a ship captain making money trying to smuggle immigrants from China to Korea, but things go wrong. The cinematography is exceptional and it's a very well-made thriller, highly recommended. Here's the new official Us trailer for...

Though its moniker leaves much to be desired, Film Movement has today premiered the first Us trailer for Sea Fog, Shim Sung-bo’s dark and brooding maritime thriller that first made waves at Toronto International Film Festival two years ago.
Much like all notable movies to emerge from the South Korean film industry of late, the esteemed Bong Joon-ho – The Host, Memories of Murder, Barking Dogs Don’t Bite, and Snowpiercer – holds a credit on Sea Fog, having helped pen the screenplay and produce alongside Sung-bo.
Following up on their collaboration on Memories of Murder, Sung-bo and Joon-ho’s next creative venture chronicles the story of Captain Kang, a helmer who turns to illegal smuggling in his desperation, accepting a questionable job that involves the safe passage of immigrants from China to Korea.
Tense and nail-biting from the off, the official synopsis for Sea Fog reveals a ominous thriller:

For some, the name Bong Joon-ho is enough to garner interest, whether he is directing, producing, or scripting. He has handled the latter two in Sung-bo Shim‘s (who co-penned Bong’s Memories of Murder), which has now been given its first U.S. trailer ahead of a domestic release. The trailer shows a fisherman down on his luck who once again engages in human smuggling between China and Korea. An official selection at Tiff back in 2014 and now finally landing in the U.S. this summer, the trailer promises a taut, beautifully shot thriller.
We said in our review: “Both atmospheric and claustrophobic, the thriller is expertly lensed by cinematographer Hong Kyung-pyo (Mother, Snowpiercer) and tensely paced by editors Kim Sang-bum and Kim Jae-bum. The influence of Bong is apparent throughout the film, yet Shim’s direction is top notch and a text book example of misdirection. While the...

The New York-based film distributor has picked up North American rights to Shim Sung-Bo’s South Korean thriller Haemoo from Finecut in Cannes.
Shim co-wrote the film with Bong Joon-Ho, who also produced the thriller about a group of fisherman driven to madness when their attempt to smuggle illegal Chinese-Korean immigrants goes horribly wrong.
Haemoo premiered at Toronto last year and will screen at New Directors/New Films. The film will open in early 2016.
The North American rights deal with Wme Global on Justin Lerner’s The Automatic Hate follows the film’s world premiere at SXSW.
Film Movement plans a winter theatrical release for the family drama following select festival appearances including the Seattle International Film Festival later this month.

A self-acknowledged "showcase for Academy Award frontrunners," the Santa Barbara International Film Festival is often overlooked for the actual films that earn it festival status. An amalgamation of international discoveries and ’merica’s circuit highlights, the Sbiff curates a week of best-of-the-best to pair with their star-praising. The 2015 edition offers another expansive selection, bookended by two films that aren’t on any radars just yet. Sbiff will open with "Desert Dancer," producer Richard Raymond’s directorial debut. Starring Reece Ritchie and Frieda Pinto, the drama follows a group of friends who wave off the harsh political climate of Iran’s 2009 presidential election in favor of forming a dance team, picking up moves from Michael Jackson, Gene Kelly and Rudolf Nureyev thanks to the magic of YouTube. The festival will close with "McFarland, USA," starring Kevin Costner and Maria Bello. Telling the 1987 true story of a Latino high school’s underdog cross-country team,...

The Toronto International Film Festival (Tiff) has fired its awards season opening salvo, announcing a slew of world premieres for the September edition, which will close with Alan Rickman’s A Little Chaos.Scroll down for full list
Not to be outdone by the New York Film Festival, which has staked a claim to the world premieres of Gone Girl and Inherent Vice, and Venice, which will open with Birdman, artistic director Cameron Bailey and his team announced on Tuesday (22) close to 50 galas and special presentations.
Two factors are certain to ratchet up the sense of anticipation heading into September. Most of these titles are without Us distribution and that said, it remains to be seen which films will qualify for a coveted first-weekend slot.

This morning the first wave of the 2014 Toronto Film Festival lineup was announced and so far it's an impressive list of films including films from Noah Baumbach, Mike Leigh, David Gordon Green, Jason Reitman, Bennett Miller, David Cronenberg, Antoine Fuqua, Edward Zwick, Mikael Roskam, David Dobkin and many others. One surprising detail is there was no announcement of an opening film so along with everything below there is still at least one biggie on the way, and while they say it has nothing to do with their "premiere" mandate, I wouldn't be surprised if it might be Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Birdman and they're waiting to see if it will be the North American premiere. Then again, could Birdman open both Toronto and Venicec But what else could it bec Maybe David Ayer's Furyc No chance for Christopher Nolan's Interstellar... or is therec Probably the films announced so far...
