Writer/director Andrew Enriquez actually experienced a sense of horror the first time he saw an elephant shrew, and incorporated some of his impressions into the screenplay.

Goofs
Nancy's mental health crisis is triggered by seeing an exhibit of elephant shrews (scientific name Macroscelididae) at the Smithsonian Zoo-- however, according to the Smithsonian website, elephant shrews were not on display in a time frame preceding the events of the film.
